WOW! How extraordinary! Dead Can Dance draw on so many of these early musical traditions from different cultures and creates the most powerful music and videos. Greeting to our #Bulgarian friends. Lisa Gerrard is an Australian but she transcends the world doesn't she? And opens up new dimensions in the brain.
This is hands down the best track on this album. I got into DCD through a friend in ‘91 with Into the Labyrinth and then bought every album preceding it. Then of course I bought everything that came after. I even have live bootlegs. Saw them live twice and saw Lisa on her very first ever solo tour for the Mirror pool. So yeah, I have been a fan for a very very long time. That being said, I will say this is definitely in my top 10 DCD songs they have ever done. And they have a lot of great songs… with a few minor duds along the way ( to my ears anyway). This song just oozes atmosphere and a portal into a self musical journey. A lot of DCD songs do that of course, but after all these years and their large body of work, this song is very representative of how they really can transport you onto a sonic musical journey of the senses.
I dont think it's just Bulgarian, the idea of scaring the winter away with masks and noise is pretty widespread and still alive in many parts of Europe. Dear all, I understand DCD recorded this video in Bulgaria. Not to mention the beauty of the nature, I am astonished about the beautiful masks and dances. Can someone tell me the name of the masks/characters dancing? They remind me of Sardinia traditions ❤
These are most commonly known as kukeri but depending on the region they can be "mechkari", "babichari", "startsi" and so on, are performed either at around the end of the year (connected to winter solstice) or beginning of spring around the equinox. It's related to fertility with blessings of the people, animals, homes and land and chasing the evil spirits. The different regions and villages have big differences in masks but the overall tradition is similar. In general there are different characters present in the procession with traditionally all characters being played by men. In Eastern Bulgaria and its former ethnic boundaries, the kukeri are wearing often female clothes with the masks. It's more or less carnival ambiance where anything goes. Bulgarians use the opportunity to laugh at the clergy, at any authority figures and just be wild. The rituals performed are so many it's difficult to describe in a RUclips comment but there are festivals, like the one in Pernik (the biggest one) and the one in Shiroka Luka (the one from the video) being the most famous where people can go and see these masks and rituals from all over the county.

Your guess may be true. Dionysius came from the Thracian religious traditions and was later adopted by the Greeks. The land of the Thracians is Bulgaria and the border areas.
@@millned3247 Even the name Thrace indicates the Greekness of the area! Once upon a time in ancient times the region of Thrace was so large it "covered" some countries of today!
In the land around the Bulgarian city of Varna was found the oldest gold in Europe, which is Thracian - Rogozen gold treasure. . Bulgaria has the richest Thracian tombs. Many golden treasures, which are also Thracian, have been found in our lands. In the study of the DNA of our people, heredity from the Thracians was established. The Celts, who are Thracian tribes, lived in our lands before settling on the British Isles and becoming modern Scots. That is why many men and women with black hair and blue eyes live in Bulgaria, just like the Scots - one blood.
@@millned3247 I give you a small detail. Until 18,000 BC Bulgaria was covered by glaciers. So the culture came from Greece to the wider region. And I will say it again, ancient Thrace was the largest Nation in the World after the Indians, it stretched from the Aegean to the Danube and from Olympus to the Bosphorus, gave the rest of Greece the Orphic and Dionysian cult, participated in the Trojan War and its campaign Alexander the Great with 5,000 men. As for the Scots and the Celts it is another story. I will not analyze this now. I will only say that look for the songs of the Celts to see what they write about Greece and also look for why the Scots have a statue of Alexander the Great in Edinburgh. Be well.
