Hello from London, UK. I'm (almost) 75 and I've been following Angelina for about five years now. This was my first video of hers. What attracts me about her? Her voice, frankly. I have never heard a voice with such emotional connection. There are moments listening to her when she seems to touch my soul. She really IS music but she is also about the words. She connects with the lyrics and tells a story with each song. She takes classics from the 40s, 50, 60s, and she makes them seem new again. I think a large part of her attraction for us older people is that we feel like grandparents towards her, proud when we see her growing up and hitting (and passing) fresh milestones. If you react to I'm A Fool To Want You, the next song on NGT, please make sure you pick the longer video. Most of them cut out the middle section (it was too long for the show) and you won't want to miss a single angelic note.

I'm glad you found the "right" video just in time - it's very important to watch her NGT videos in the subtitled version because the judges' comments are more than accurate and complete the whole experience beautifully.
Since the entire competition lasted six months, you can witness her amazing development in this relatively short period of time. At this point she had already inhaled jazz for about five years, and her musical knowledge is astonishing, as is her ability to use the jazz singer's toolbox (you'll understand this by listening to the finale (Summertime) at latest).
There is a short interview excerpt after she won her semi-final. She was asked what her peers thought about it and her response was, "They think it's crazy and they don't like it much." And unfortunately that's still the point to this day. And I'm sure that with this kind of repertoire you won't win a Grammy or reach the top of the charts.
The "old soul" remark is spot on, in an interview just before the semi-final she said: "Music found me early" (not the other way around), which is amazing to hear from an 8 year old child (NTB-Scanpix -Interview: ruclips.net/video/KVP_rFHMHYc/видео.html).
I'm from Germany and I found her at the end of 2016, at a time when there was much less footage than today, even from earlier days - I was looking for a concert recording conducted by Howard Shore, when the algorithm found it appropriate to recomend Angelina's “I put a spell on you” - no idea why 😉

You are a lucky man, just discovering Angelina. Yes, she is comfortable on stage, as anyone with a genius mentality would be. Very few of us are in this category. The majority ( like me) are totally unprepared to be on a stage or showing a talent in front of more than our family. This little girl knew at 18 months what she was born to do. We are witnessing history.

Nice reaction 🙂 And good that you found a better video as well. I am from Norway like her, and at barely past 50 I may very well be one of her youngest die-hard fans. Life is too short to listen to mediocre music and singers, and when Angelina entered my life with the performance you just watched, I was slowly but surely losing my love for music. OR... My love was still there, but no one was worthy of it. Or at least very few; I DO have other favorite artists of course. I guess my standards were simply too high for most contemporary artists to match. Funny how a 7 year old girl could change all that within 30 seconds. I have never left her side ever since, and I have no plans of doing so, if life doesn't throw a curveball at me that is 😉
What EVERY Angelina fan knows by now, is that she can do whatever she wants to do, she is not limited to just ONE genre, she can do it all. And she can do it far better than most artists out there. SO many one trick ponies, and barely ONE trick at that 🤣 She has done 9 genres so far, even EDM, so the sky is her limit. Or maybe only her starting point. Because I'm not sure if she has any limits. The Angelina rocket will fire its solid fuel tank very soon, and then there will be no stopping her until she reaches the stars, trust me on that.
Keep up your great work! Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

She'd already been performing in music recording studios since 5 or 6. She is the one that asked her mom to take her to NGT. She had been watching NGT for a couple years already. She fully understood what happened on that stage.

This song was my first introduction to Angelina. Just found it by accident while looking for talent shows on RUclips in 2019 "I think," at first I did not particularly like it much, as I had not heard the original, but then I listened to it and then realized how close to the original Angelina was. so then I was hooked, I am 71 years old and listen to Angelina every day, on Spotify & also on RUclips reaction channels. I can't put into words why I love her so much, I think her tone is instantly recognizable & all the things she does with her voice the vocal fry before & after a word her vibrato & all the other things she can do with her voice just add so much to any song she sings, Her being so young her answers & reactions to the judges comments throughout all her performances on this show and the America's got talent are very mature & calm & reserved unlike most other performers

Similar age to you (also a Badger) and I echo everything you said here. Many of her song choices were released when my parents were listening to them. Unfortunately they passed before I had even discovered Angelina, so no chance to share this wonderful talent with them. They would have loved her as we do. Take care.

You asked why she captivates: she clearly heard this song; it moved her; she then generously shared how she felt about it with us. She's an amazing musician. The great voice is (for me) a coincidence, less important than the choices she makes with it during the performance.
When she does a cover, even of a beloved song I've heard a million times, it's like I'm hearing it for the first time again. That is the best birthday or Christmas present possible, for any music lover.

Hey JND…greetings from sunny Perth, currently 41 and climbing! I’m one of the 60+ group and have been following AJ for about 9 years. I was fortunate to stumble across some of her early viral vids and was just amazed. I guess I was drawn in by a combination of factors. Firstly that voice was just impossible coming from such a tiny person! Once over that, I realised that the songs were not your usual child the songs, and that the more I heard the more I realised that this amazing young girl was performing “stunning” renditions of the music of my own childhood from the reel to reel player of my parents. Captivating. The more I heard and the older she got and gets the more intoxicating the voice became and still becomes. The driving force for her audience (apart from that voice)is obviously her music selection which is much more attractive the the older audience, but this will change as the younger set become exposed particularly with her later releases. Her younger newer fans will then also be exposed to her older material and perhaps even like it…and we oldies may even become educated on some newer stuff! Winners all! Keep up the good work mate.

Your analytics are showing what you would see at a concert, a sea of white or no haired folks. AJ sings the music I heard on my parents radio in the 1940s. But when you get to her current stuff, you'll see she has the sensibility and capability to tap into a very contemporary audience without losing her beloved granddaughter appeal. I'm 81 from the U.S. midwest and am attracted the ability of this child to sing a song like she just spent a day with the writer, learning his or her life story and the motivation that inspired the song. Listen to her cover of Adele's "A Million Years Ago" as a prime example. She will have you on the verge of tears, then close with a bright, happy "Bye!". So, she's feeling everything she says while singing it but understanding it's only a part of a piece of music.

Hi, she just needs a guitar or a piano as accompaniment without all the bells and whistles and the magic is gone, tears in her eyes and goosebumps, that's completely normal, I feel like that all the time, she has something in her voice that you can't describe but these emotions hit you in your heart and soul and the effect is, I want to become a better person and it fills me with peace. She is also very humble and she has a very big heart. You can see it in her commitment to humanitarian and social work. She has already collected millions for children - she donated all of her winnings from Norway's Got Talent. We Angels (that's what she calls her fans) love her, she has over 200 covers and most of them sound better than the originals. She also has 12 self-written originals and 2 songs written for her. She can adapt to any song and makes her own thing from it. She turned 18 on January 10th. Greetings from Germany

You have just asked the question, what do I love about Angelina’s voice.
This voice, the first time I heard it, undid me. Angelina’s voice is intricately woven together with deep, raw and authentic emotion. Her voice connects me to her. I have experienced deep healing from a 43 year old wound where I was numb to my mother’s suicide in 1980. I’m now almost 63. It was Million Miles, the one about her grandfather.
Then there’s the sound of her voice. That’s a whole other animal. Old soul is the only way to say it. It’s thee most relevant and beautiful sound.
    Hey, I love your reactions.

Angelina Jordan actually seems to get better with each performance when she goes through her quartet of songs on Norske Talenter (Norway’s Got Talent, or NGT). The show went on for several months; that's why her age is 7 and then she finishes at 8, but she handles everything like a professional. The other songs are:
    "I'm A Fool To Want You," ruclips.net/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/видео.htmlsi=5E6KObOU5h01Qa3l
    "Bang Bang,"
    ruclips.net/video/pcBoB49Gxn8/видео.htmlsi=YZO0-2oMyYr8mEsb
    and "Summertime."
    ruclips.net/video/bnpFsCNKzFg/видео.htmlsi=wqFREbd7Tl8mGhsz
Please go through all of them, all in one video if possible, just because they're short and you may as well put them together. You really start to understand what a prodigy she is, aside from listening to her beautiful voice, when you start to look at her rehearsals and watch how she tells all the grown artists where she wants the music to fit around her gorgeous voice, nicely, of course. ❤

While as a youngster I had heard Billie sing (and all the other greats she tends to cover) I was not a particular fan as by then in the late 50's it was already being seen as old peoples music and soon enough I fell into rock and roll of the 1960's (70 now). I think she captures us by singing these old nostalgic tunes that we just have to check out and then we all become sort of extended family and just like our own children & grandchildren we take great pride in their (Her) achievements. Hope that makes sense. From Aus. Great reaction.

As good as this is, you can see the rapid growth in her musicality over the 6 months of the competition. Each of the remaining 3 songs is leaps & bounds better than the previous one. At the finals she performed a masterful version of the classic jazz standard, Summertime, that was mind boggling. By the time she was 10 yo, she was a complete professional with a fully adult voice. Now at 18 yo, she is the best I've ever seen in my 76 years. Greetings from the Hamptons of NY.

Bear in mind there is footage of Angelina in the studio at 6 reading english lyrics at 6. Blown away by her talent most people miss how bright she is. She was writing a diary at 6 encouraged by grandma Meri who was also a child prodigy poet and painter. Angelina became Norways youngest published author at 9. When anpoet advised her yo make excerpts of her diary into a book, after he read how she felt after she gave her shoes to a barefoot orphan with scared bare feet.

Thank you very much JND. You are correct, she has a massive older fan base for a reason. I myself grew up listening to many many of the artists that Angelina aspires to. My parents listened to many of these artists so I was exposed to many of them. Angelina's Grandma Mery Zamani, an Iranian Poet/Painter exposed Angelina to all these great Jazz/blues artists from Decades ago as a Toddler. She fell in love with that music and absorbed it all, Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington, Louie Armstrong, Frank Sinatra , Ella Fitzgerald....well it is a long list. She once said that if it weren't for Billy Holiday, there would be no Angelina, Billy is her Idol, amongst Adele, Whitney Houston, Elvis Presley and many others. She is a student of music, and while you may see a tiny cute little 7 year old here, her musical genius mind is many many years ahead. She is truly a prodigy. You ask what draws us older folk to her, to put it simply she brought back REAL music and sings it with emotion and passion, there is no other child this age singing jazz classics, probably singing "wheels on the bus go round and round" or whatever, not to be mean but this right here is highly unusual to say the least. It has been nearly 8 years for me now following Angelina, listen to her every single day. Most of the "mainstream" music promoted these days is pretty much crap to me. I appreciate music with meaning, with emotion and with a Vocalists not relying on mixing, production, auto tune etc....think you get my point JND. Angelina is the REAL deal, pure talent, also humble, caring, sweet, Classy and so on....a trait amongst many in the music industry that is long gone. Sorry about my blabbering, I am a passionate AJ fan for a reason. Cheers, really enjoy your Angelina reactions, glad to be a Sub here. ❤❤🥰🥰 BTW, never underestimate the Brilliance of this young lady!

Angelina is all about love, raised in a family which nurtured her to believe love is the most important thing to cherish in life. It's okay if you assume things, no harm done, but perhaps this may give you something to think about. For instance, she understood the sadness in 'Gloomy Sunday', she was not just singing words. Whenever she prepares to sing a song she searches for the love in the message of the song. Therefore, life situations in any song may vary, and we understand Angelina could have never experienced them, BUT, she feels the love and interprets it in her way and when she sings we feel it in our heart. Another words, it's GENUINE what we are feeling, it's the love in her heart touching ours. It's incomprehensible to believe a 7 year old could do something like this BUT, Angelina is not your normal 7 year older. Her poise and confidence? She has been quoted as saying she is most comfortable in her life when she on stage singing for people. So much more, so much more, but you need to rest a little after this. Yes, this was her introduction to the world and it was a classic performance.

Angelina understood the lyrics of 'the Hungarian suicide song' way better than most people would even consider, let alone notice by her performance...her mum wasn't keen on her singing this song because of the inferences around suicide, so Angelina omitted the dark verses and changed some of the lyrics so it was more about sadness or depression than death...she sang "Little white flowers were never a waste on you - not where the black hole of sorrow has taken you", instead of "Little white flowers could never awaken you - not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you"...when Bjarte asked her if she knew what it was about, her answer was spot on the truth, because that's what Angelina had made her version all about...the first of many times she has altered a song's lyrics to appease mum or, just to be more age appropriate...she's been switched on from the get go.

Thank you Graham for such a vivid explanation of the whole 'Gloomy Sunday' story. Angelina's concise answer to Bjarte's question, although seemingly innocent, said much more than anyone could have ever imagined the thoughtfulness behind her words, "It was a sad Sunday." @@grahamkelsey1675

Here is a quote from Angelina (7y) from an interview with TV2 after her Auditions NTG 2014. "The reason I chose this song is completely random. I love jazz, but" Gloomy Sunday "was random. It was a night I could not sleep and my mother was stressed that I was awake long after midnight. Then I borrowed my mom's iPad where I wanted to listen to jazz on RUclips before I fell asleep. Then came a picture of a beautiful lady screaming at the sky and with her eyes closed. I heard the song "Gloomy Sunday" that night and then I had to hear it every day. I love the melody. I understood well what the text was about because I know English well. Every time I sang it I felt something special about it, it's hard to explain in words. When I sang it for mom, she said that this song is nice, but that it was incredibly sad song. " ♥👣👸🏻🎷

As to Angelina's voice, "uniqueness" is the term that encapsulates it for me. Uniqueness in every way: Not only her vocalization and intonation, but also her choices of songs, her interpretations, her arrangements (she's been making her own arrangements at least since age 8) and so forth. Also, she is a "singularity" as an individual so to speak, starting with her compassionate and charitable soul (see for why she always performs barefooted) and, on top of it all, just mentioning her speaking four languages and playing four instruments...

One reactor did put it this way: "This girl is so gifted, she can paint stories with her voice", and I think that is a very nice way to describe what we experience when we watch and listen to Angelina Jordan (and Lucy Thomas from the UK as well). Those singers are "drawing" us straight into the lyrics. Angelina was already great back in 2014, but listen to her now.... In December 2023 she performed "Unchained Melody" during the Nobel Peace Price event in Oslo (yes, the city where it all started for Angelina). I only can advice you to react on that video (to be found on RUclips Channel Boris Palenovski). And a wonderful way to get more knowledge in a small amount of time about Angelina is the British video on RUclips "Born to Sing, Angelina Jordan, the early years (2006-2014)". Very interresting as well!!

Angelina knew very well what she was doing in this performance - she pushed her mother into letting her enter Norway's Got Talent - she also chose the song she sang and knew it was a sad song. Angelina has been choosing her songs and writing her own vocal arrangements since this age. She was even noticed by one of the judges that she was telling the musician for one of her song performances how she wanted the song to be played.

To hear a child express emotion so beautifully and clearly reminds us of the truth: as children, we experience raw emotions more powerfully than at any other time in our lives. We forget how powerful our childhood emotional experiences were because they would overwhelm us. Then we lose the connection with children. We regard their emotional reactions as inconvenient and immature. Angelina’s singing penetrates that haze of forgetfulness and reminds us of our raw emotions. Her voice comes from and goes right to the heart.

Thanks for your reaction, JND. I am 65 years old and had always preferred rock n roll, until I learned of Angelina nearly 4 years ago. When I was younger, I just didn't feel the same as a lot of people when they listened to a sad or emotional song. When Angelina sings the same song, it feels like her voice is hugging my soul. I have learned, each of us are individuals and have our own favorite musical artists. I only hope those who favor other artists, feel as inspired to improve myself and the world, as I do by listening to Angelina. She will be performing two shows at the Westgate Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, on February 29.

Thank you for reacting to our mini jazz queen at 7yrs old , like so many of us I have seen this performance hundreds of times it is always a joy and especially when someone new gets to see her, she has become like family to us so we support and love her like our own she has probably millions who have adopted her in their hearts , that in itself is unique the love is very real and it is felt by her too and her amazing family , I have listened to her every day since i discovered her about 4 yrs ago and she has been an absolute joy and a heart full of love. She is an incredible talent and though she loves to sing so much she has worked hard and put her heart and soul into this pretty much from birth and deserves the acknowledgement and love of the world.💜👣

Like so many others, it’s difficult to put into words how Angelina affects me. I am from the UK, 71 years old and have lived through the 50’s, 60’s! 70’s 80’s, 90’s 00’s 10’s, and now 20’s, some great music in all of those decades especially the 60’s which was revolutionary, and I love many bands and soloists, however, none have ever touched my soul the way Angelina does. I really hope that the younger generation discover her soon, she has the ability to communicate in a way that no other artist can. She touches your soul and gives love to everyone. She demonstrates that it isn’t necessary to portray herself in a cheap, gimmicky fashion, she oozes with classy, natural elegance and always has done.
I love your reaction to this and strongly recommend that you watch the remaining three performances of this contest to truly appreciate her rapid growth in just a few months which help to explain why she is so phenomenal at just 18 years old.
I really envy all those who will be going to see her in Las Vegas this month. Unfortunately I am unable to fly at the moment having just had a total knee replacement at the end of January. But I am determined I will see her one day soon!

Thank you, and I enjoyed your insightful and genuine comments during your reaction.
Please begin 2024 generously and spread the love and kindness that Angelina demonstrates and requests from us! Her message is profound and timely. Please provide links to the artist's original video and official channels in your description. Most importantly, encourage viewers to use those links to watch, like, share, and comment. Your verbal encouragement will lead viewers to the artist's links as well as your valuable information, since most do not go to your descriptions on their own. You may also include links to the artists' social media and streaming services. Each artist provides so much joy to all of us, and reactors have a platform that can help boost both artist and reactor analytics on RUclips. Help enable Angelina to attain her goal of singing to spread love and peace in the world. This should apply to all featured artists on your channel. Thanks in advance for doing your part. Ok, so you're right that a lot of her fans are older, but I don't think it's because the style of music is older. Let me explain what I mean:
When you're young you tend to listen to the music of your own generation, to what is 'cool' because your identity and social life is more closely tied to what is happening in your peer culture. As you leave your early life people often get interested in styles of music and art that were outside of their 'growing up' genres. Liking the 'right' music is no longer important when you have a career, spouse, and kids (or whatever). You can explore far more therefore. Then, what tends to impress you is not so much the style but the substance of music. Obviously people are still attracted to certain styles, but quality and particularly artistic genius or artistic clarity and honesty become more important than any style. Thus, older people tend to like the virtuosos and prodigies and most deeply connected art perhaps more than younger people who are still tied to a bit more style over substance, identity over timelessness.
Angelina Jordan is a timeless artist. Her arrangement of music and the way she inhabits the songs she sings is far beyond being in some style or other, but of becoming music, of becoming the conduit for what it is saying. This, at least for me, is why she seems so humble. It's not *her* expression of music, but from her point of view it's just *music*. Yes, she writes her own songs and they are wonderful but you can see she doesn't want you to like her, but to hear what she's saying. And I'm not saying this so anyone will like her or me. It's just the objective truth, from a musician's point of view: Her vocal arrangements and execution are timeless.

There were some that said she was just mimicking what she heard. I will grant you that point, but then I would say how many 7 yr. old's are going to be able to capture just the right tone and weight of each note? She also was perfect in the use of sliding into a note that Billie was famous for. No, Angelina was special from the beginning of her life. She was introduced to her life's passion at a very early age and that fire still burns in her today.
JND her next performance is the first time I saw Angelina. What she does there, just after turning 8 yrs. old, should have been impossible. Yet there she is singing another Billie Holiday song, 'I'm A Fool To Want You. The song was originally written and performed by Frank Sinatra. Billie's version is the one I favor.
Just to show how much Angelina improved in just a couple more years I will also give you Angelina singing 'I'm A Fool To Want You' in studio.
