How To Generate More Concept - Landscape Architecture Tutorial

In this video I share 2 different fundamental methods that I use to generate more concepts in Landscape Architecture. I take you through 2 different examples of the process through my own project experiences and try to help explain how you can take the research you have done and use it for concepts. Concepts and the big idea can often be intimidating at times so I hope to make that process a little bit easier and get you moving the pencil faster!

I've been a landscape architect for 13 years. I've tried to get into it and like it, but I can't. I prefer natural landscapes to contrived conceptual landscapes, and I'm more appreciative of a vacant lot of weeds than I am of any man-made outdoor space. I mainly work with wealthy residential clients and I feel conflicted about perpetuating the "I want" attitude among wealthy clients whom are literally pricing me out of my own community. I've had to reframe my day job as a means to support my hobbies, which I love. This video gave me PTSD from my days of talking about concepts in college. I barely showed up for design lab and when I did I rushed all my work so I could get the heck outta there. I never applied myself and still graduated easily. I don't know why I'm writing this here but I like to shout into the abyss and own my true feelings. Thanks for ignoring my comment. Cheers!

Sounds to me like an average experience in design school, I feel like you aren’t alone in your feelings on what you stated above either. Can easily rattle off dozens of friends and colleagues along the way who say exactly what you have. This field is FAR from perfect. We are all slaves to developers and the ones who get work are the best at being yes man. Which is honestly just more corporate bs that you have to experience like everything else in America. So live for your hobbies cause a job is just a job and we are only here for so long. I tell people this constantly who enter this field, because it’s easy to get wrapped up and spend every day and night working and at the end of the day ull regret your college years

But what if it like this:
- I got the items/functions/furniture in the space
- Randomly laid there
- But it lacks something to tie them together
How do I find a concept in THAT

Take a step back and think about the space as a whole - ask yourself what the purpose of you putting the items/functions there in the first place. Then think about the adjacencies, what is there purpose? who are they serving? is there a larger narrative there? Or sometimes a concept could be as simple as the geometries of the space you created, it really could be anything as long as you sell the idea
