  • The story of the end of the B&O EM-1 is a very sad story. Watch the video to learn this story. I included a clip from Christopher Kovacs, who many of you may have watched.

I read somewhere else saying that 650, the first EM-1 built, was also intended for preservation (I think to be donated to a city), but it got denied, thus, 650 was scrapped

It actually was the reverse 7600 was going to go to b&O railroad museum since it hauled a fan trip. But it was scrapped by mistake. 7609 was offered to a city but they turned it down. When they couldn’t find a home for it 7609 was cut up where she stood. Now 7600 and 7609 were later renumbered to 650 and 659.

They weren't the biggest, the fastest, or the most powerful, but they were undoubtedly some of the most beautiful examples of state of the art modern steam ever created. They were absolutely optimized to perform within the clearances and loading limits of the B&O infrastructure and without much doubt represent some of Baldwin's finest work.

Man... i can only imagine B&O 659 next to C&O 1604. That'd be a sight seeing those two pull a long line of loaded coal hoppers... or general freight. Beasts of the east.

Honestly, I would start a fundraiser for another resurrection project for this engine; like PRR 5550, it would be wheels up new.
And do that for a number of wrongfully scrapped engines.

Wish someone can build a new EM-1 Steam Locomotive in the future, just to go along with the PRR’s new T-1 5550!
