Earlier in my career I was a wedding and event photographer that gradually phased out because of the drama. One of my last gigs was cancelled by the bride because her uncle just got a digital camera and was going to shoot the wedding. NP, good luck. Few weeks later I get the bride call asking me if I could fix his pictures because they were terrible. Not sure about anyone else, but I don't "fix" other peoples work.

Hand on head Doug, funny story :(. When I did wedding photography in the past I remember meeting couples and then eventually having them tell me they are going to use their cousin or friend but they were obviously hesitant and being polite because they didn’t want to offend anyone. then later on them telling they were disappointed in the images, of course you were.

Sometimes you get the opposite of the 'why don't you try...' comment, when a client says 'I dunno, you're the photographer!' This can be frustrating when I'm asking about basic things, like 'do you need full body shots, or waist-up?' Whatever good creative direction I'm able to bring, I still need the client's input on what they want.

My girlfriend is 23, but works professionally as a photographer. She had a big shooting and set up like 6 flashes or so. It was quite impressive to me. But because she is young, many old men want to give her tips and think they can do better. When she was working with a model, a guy told her, how she should move, which angles she should use and gave bullshit posing tips for the model. It was really annoying to her.

There's a technique I use in this situation you might like to pass on. I give them something to hold, like a huge reflector, preferably heavy. It doesn't have to be doing anything but it at least hides them behind it. I was once working with a writer who was cutting into my time for the photo so I produced a reflector and got him to hold it. On that occasion the questions continued to come from behind the reflector, but I swear that's the only time it hasn't worked.

I did free work for a work mate at a church event for 7-8 hours.
I went there with my studio lighting gear.
    I shot over 650 pics.
After the shoot the guy started to rush me for the pics.
He suggested I give him the raw pics so I told him I would have to charge for them so he told me I was not professional.
I also told him that I was prioritizing paid work while editing his work he was not happy about this.
And then towards the end of me editing his shoot he said I should not put a watermark and not put the pics on social media.
He finally said I said I should not use pixiset to deliver the pictures as it was not professional but suggested I use Google drive.
I stopped the work and did not deliver the pictures and he stopped talking to me.

Hey Justin, Jose from Puerto Rico. Great stuff man! That's why when a "friend" invites me to a wedding or any other activity my camera stays home. When they ask if I brought my camera, I tell them: No, just my cell phone. Having said that, I'm not even a pro.
Let me ask you something Justin, do you have friends who make their living with a trade of some sorts? Let's say electrician, plumber etc? Invite them to your next BBQ and tell them while they're there, if they can check a leak or maybe inspect your electrical layout but tell them you can't pay them, but they'll gain invaluable experience and that you will recommend them. Deep down inside they're hoping someone can do a Jimmy Hoffa on you, but they won't say it to you. :-)

    Love it.
The "Can you bring your camera" crap: While its been a few years since I've been asked that, it used to happen quite often. The answer was always the same, starting with questions about the event and then a price quote. It always ended with the price quote.
Funnily enough they always came from the same kind of people. Those who are friends when they need something but have never sent a single dollar's worth of business at any point before that.
Addressing the shadowing issue: The most annoying and hilarious request for shadowing came from a drunk restauranteur exhaling his smoke/alcohol dragon breath in my face telling me why I should allow his kid to "shadow" me which in this case translated into giving him a free education. He wasn't so drunk that when I told him that I'd consider it he knew I was completely blowing it off.
Even offhand comments can be annoying, such as what I generally hear when I'm just out and about, shooting recreationally and somebody will eventually comment on the size of my lens (Minimally a 70-200, sometimes an 80-400) talking about just how huge it is, so I reaped "Well, if I'm going to play Mine's Bigger I need to back it up with something, right?".

      @AskMOTT  3 года назад +1

That’s good. Be yourself. When you hit fifty and realize that people really don’t care that much about what you thought was important you’ll be glad you didn’t “bend the knee” and do what “people” wanted. What people want in general is usually the average of the best and the worst, meaning it’s a bland and harmless piece of drivel that neither offends nor excites passion. F&ck that! Regrets in life usually take the form of things not done. We rarely regret things we did, even if they turn out badly but we do torment ourselves with the things we didn’t do. Ask me how I know.

Most of this applies to the dreaded course path of doing weddings. And as we all have certain constants in the field such as field staff, venue operations, levels of access.... We don't have Aunt Martha and Cousin Sal (who BOTH own cameras that can change lenses) following us during a one time event. This isn't ever touching the 'preconceived expectations vs. REALITY' once the post work is done.
But in my 20's & 30's I could catch bad guys in the dark whilst hopping over backyard fences
There is an easier path Grasshopper.
