I'll be honest, Pyramid Head's design never scared me very much, until i went to a con with my gf at the time and her friend. He was a blacksmith by profession and was cosplaying as pyramid head. I met him first as a human and later on after we split, i saw him in his cosplay. He walked slowly down the con halls, the humongous sword dragging behind him, the huge pyramid over his head, covered in blood. I knew who he was but just seeing that image right in front of me, in super detailed cosplay, i was automatically freaked.
now i think of that cosplay every time i see pyramid head and it really adds to the effect.

Fun fact: Masahiro Ito (Pyramid Head's creator) is EXTREMELY dissappointed towards fans who claim Pyramid Head is *just* sexual impulses. Ito designed him to embody way more than that, yet it keeps being represented as "the hot rape monster" which just sits bad with Ito.

I always thought that the reason why Pyramid Head wears the Pyramid (or covers himself in general) is because it is actually James' face underneath, and throughout the game James wasn't ready to face himself, his guilt and ultimately his own punishment. Till the end at least.
    Fantastic video btw.

This theory is very clever, and when you think about it, it can actually link to some stuff in the video, as the personification of the id usually shares the same characteristics as the person who owns it, but usually more gruesome in appearance.
So In this logic pyramid head is what James would think of as a demon of sorts, this demon being there to punish him for his guilt.

Yes that was my interpretation of Pyramid head on my first play through, that he was an executioner of Silent Hill in the past and he wore a pyramid head as an executioner mask, however, in respect to game I always thought he represented Jame's inner demons and sought to punish and torment you for your actions i.e. killing your wife Mary who was terminally ill!

    • @robynstopped
      @robynstopped 2 года назад +14

I agree but it also represents his guilt and shame dealing with any woman since he neglected Mary. You can hear it in how Maria emasculates him when he doesn't protect her. He struggles with wanting to be attracted to other women and so sees them as monsters harassing him with their bodies and sees himself as a monster hungering for their bodies. This explains why we see pyramid head abusing the female monsters. That's how he feels about sex and is ashamed of it.

  • @lloydpeacock4624

I think the reason why the pyramid head is so unnerving is because he borders on being a creature but not enough to the point where you can call him one. That's why he is so unnerving because he's practically in the uncanny valley, he's right. In the middle of monster and man

I’ve always imagined the pyramid as being heavy and uncomfortable, with the inner walls of the “helmet” being straight and jointing at a point above the head. If it were worn by anyone else, it would cause immense pain, weighing you down and likely injuring you. It’s pain and it’s guilt. Of course he is a demon and he continues slowly without being held back by his anchor of a hat.

    • @coconutshampoo9025
      @coconutshampoo9025 2 года назад +66

I always believed Pyramid Head is a being a pain and torture. Even as he torments those around him, he is forced to be in constant pain himself. He wears a heavy, painful helmet, limps, and drags heavy weapons around. His helmet keeps him from being able to interact with others, it’s most likely uncomfortable but he can’t take it off either, and he’s always filthy. Audio clips exist of him moaning too, meaning he’s likely able if speaking, but for one reason or another, can’t.

There was something about him that the moment I saw him, I was awestruck with just how terrifying he is. Years later, I'm now a Psychology student, and after watching this video, it all makes sense to me now (I painfully admit that Freud, so far, is my favorite psychologist). I just found it amusing that my obsession with Pyramid Head was a hint of some sort towards my career path.

Sure they are slightly different accordingly to said person or protagonist, but if each monster was just for one person like James. Then we would have many different ones. I also theorize, but just theorize, that maybe each person in silent hill makes an imprint and leaves that monster behind. But that's just a theory. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk lol.

Also, not every monster in the games is connected to just one person. Everything in SH1 was connected to Alessa, but Harry, Cybil, Dahlia, Kaufmann, etc., all saw the same thing. In SH2, it was a lot more personalized, but there was a bit more of a crossover in that game with things like the Abstract Daddy. That was Angela's monster, but James could see it. However, what James saw is not what Angela saw.

Like many things in Silent Hill, Pyramid Head takes inspiration from Jacob's Ladder. He looks and acts like a demon, but in reality, he is an angel helping James break free from his delusions and "cleaning" him. That's why he is constantly murdering the monsters created by James' delusions.
Saying "I don't need you anymore" is exactly what Pyramid Head was after the entire time. Thus why he and his twin execute themselves after confirming James' resolution.

The id isn't concerned with guilt. It's quite the opposite infact. If pyramid head is to be understood to represent guilt, then he would actually play the role of superego instead of the id. Which would work here, as the superego must kick the egos ass to keep the influence of the id from taking over. Superego is the challenging force you go up against each time you wrestle with whether or not a choice is moral or struggle to do the right thing. It will keep popping up and ruining the party until you fall in line with it. The id doesn't necessarily just contain all the negative feelings and thoughts, it represents the animalistic self serving urges and desires and pushes you to endulge regardless of morality or social expectation. In fact, while in the act of endulging an impulse categorized as being part of the "id" one is likely to have very pleasant or powerful feelings instead of negative ones. By contrast, a large portion of the spectrum of negative feelings and thoughts can be said to arrise from interaction between the ego and superego (

Edit: Yes, this actually works even more effectively in integrating the previous theories, in line with Max's points. The superego both beats the crap out of you by making you feel bad, and is acting as a guide in a sense. The sexual-kinda scene early in the game made me think Id initially, but looking at it through this lens and taking into account the dev comments that it was not intended to be a craven sex scene, it could make more sense as the superego violently wrestling elements of the suppressed Id into line. As the ego, James is caught in the middle, witnessing the battle and unsure what to make of it.

We are not the Ego we are The Self, the Ego is a nessarary mask, the Ego is subordiant to the Super Ego, it casts the inner image of oneself as one wants to become. Too bad this lore video is all bullshit. Pyramid Head is JUST a manifestation of James Sunderland’s guilt stemming from his sexual frustration over his wife dying of a terminal illness. Pyramid Head is basically just his desire to be punished for his selfish thoughts and resentment over his wife getting sick and dying. The version of Pyramid Head in DbD is based on the one from the movies, which is an executioner belonging to The Darkness that engulfs Silent Hill. They’re functionally different beings. The OG Pyramid Head primarily does two things in Silent Hill 2, it tries to hunt and kill James and it r*pes (literally) other monsters. The other monsters are all mostly symbolic of his forcibly repressed sexuality, with mannequins that are just two pairs of women’s legs, sexy nurses, and creatures who’s arms are trapped inside their own skin with their hands fused to their crotches. Classic Silent hill IS an actual Freudian nightmare, but the concepts of Id, Ego, and Super Ego are conspicuously absent; or rather Silent Hill focuses on Guilt and Repression.

I had a theory of my own when I was 18ish and it depended on an established theory (that there were multiple Silent Hill’s)
My theory was that Pyramid Head was a James from an alternate SH. This James made it his goal to kill all other versions of himself that came across any Silent Hill’s. It was his eternal punishment.
The double Pyramid Head fight at the end represented the boss, PH himself’s indecision on whether or not this James (the player) was the one to break the cycle. Ultimately, indecision does Pyramid Head in just as it had in his regular life as James Sunderland. He (PH) kills himself because he questions the duality of his own nature still, realizing he’ll never truly pay penance for his wrongs, or make a difference in the path of other versions of himself. (I know, eternal sadness)
We the player then canonically repeat the cycle by completing the In Water ending. In the water James becomes Pyramid Head. And a version of him is reborn with Mary’s corpse in the backseat of his car, only to repeat it all over again. This is James ultimate punishment, one way or another. He is doomed to eternal life in Silent Hill.

I like to interpret the Pyramid to be a torture device of a bygone period of the town’s history; the way it’s shaped looks heavy, it's rusting, it even touches it in the first scene he appears in like it’s hurting him, and while Homecoming doesn’t make sense for him to be in it, the idea of it having a spiky interior like an iron maiden seems at least fitting. If he’s representing James’ need to be punished, torture is the oldest method to go with.

  • @dahktuh

I've recently gotten into Silent Hill and was considering Pyramid Head's role in the lore given all the facts and theories I've come across, including many of the ones presented in this video. He manifests as an embodiment of what James secretly fears in himself and refuses to face (what lurks in his "Id," as you mentioned), and he subsides when James finally decides to stop running from the truth and instead confront it. When I was going through the game, I never really got the feeling that Pyramid Head was explicitly out to kill James, but he WOULD if James wouldn't face him (like what you said about guilt- and other subdued "Id" qualities- being able to kill a person if not properly dealt with and integrated). To me, it felt more like he was heavily motivating James to navigate his way to a catharsis through EXTREME discomfort and literal brutal, horrific honesty (making him witness the things within himself he didn't want to confront, mainly with Maria's multiple deaths).
Also, I know it's clearly stated that Pyramid Head manifests and in that form as a result of James' psyche and memory, and exists to torment him specifically, but I think he can also be interpreted as a more substantial figure in Silent Hill that exists independently from its visitors and haunts its Otherworld, waiting to bestow guidance through retribution on whoever the town summons next. Some evidence to back this theory: his appearance in "Homecoming." It's brief and out-of-place given his original role, so it's widely considered just fanservice and non-canonical. But I once saw someone suggest a way this cameo could be interpreted as canon, if desired, and it simultaneously backs this theory (of him being a independent, staple figure in the town's operation) and is backed-up by this theory.
It's stated (or implied? I can't remember) that only James can see Pyramid Head, since he is a direct manifestation of James' deepest personal fears, and is carefully constructed to represent exactly that. Pyramid Head is personal, there to torment specifically him, in ways specific to him. He would only exist under these specific circumstances. Therefore, Alex would've had to have had almost the exact same experiences as James, as well as harbor the same psyche, to invoke the near-perfect image of the creature James saw as well, and be subject to a similar brand of torment. Except he's not subject to that torment. In fact, Pyramid Head just leaves him alone, even after staring him down, which implies Alex isn't his target or concern. Meaning Alex didn't manifest him, which of course he didn't, since his experience was not similar to James'. But he could still see him and (essentially) interact with him despite this, which flips on its head the idea that Pyramid Head's whole existence is within the mind and POV of the target, which, in turn, implies he exists separate from the target, which, in turn again, implies he's a separate entity that exists in Silent Hill. And not only did he see Pyramid Head, he saw him in a way that is arguably specific to Alex's psyche itself. [SPOILERS] Alex lives with the delusion that he is a soldier, which would lend to Pyramid Head's more militaristic appearance (a more detailed and tactical-looking design for his helmet, the Great Knife resembling an army knife). But he still retains a similar silhouette to his original look.
You mentioned how the monsters' appearances would change person to person depending on what's in their psyche, exemplified by what Ito said about Angela's situation. But the Abstract Daddy creature, viewed from James' POV, is still very clearly a grotesque representation of two figures having sex on a bed. So although it of course varies from what she sees, it also might not be too different, implying perhaps the creature has a general appearance that just alters slightly based on who is viewing it. Referencing this example in relation to Pyramid Head, he might have a general form that resembles what both James and Alex saw. And if we continue to roll with the theory that he might exist independently from James, he could easily fit into the role of Sullivan's "red devil," which, in turn, would imply that he indeed exists independently within Silent Hill, acting as a persecutor to those refusing to face their sins in the town.
Anyway, that's the way I like to interpret it so his "non-canonical" appearances within the games make more sense. And I like the idea of him being an entity of Silent Hill, manifested by it to stalk its foggy streets and exact judgment upon those who refuse to atone for their sins. But I mean, whether you interpret it like this or just vibe with the canon interpretation, he's cool as hell either way.

We're afraid of the darkness for the same reason children think monsters hide in it... for the longest time, with darkness came death. For what is still the majority of human existence, we had no to little weapon against darkness and probably spent many centuries if not longer, not even knowing what was killing us from the darkness. Couple that with glowing eyes and scary noises, you've got monsters in the dark.
As a result, like with spiders and snakes and the seriously ambiguous (creepy) etc, we have a tendency to pass this well-learned fear on, genetically.
So, I _do_ think we can easily describe what "it is" about darkness.
Pyramid Head fits somewhere on the Ambiguity scale.

Humans fear darkness because we can't see in the dark, it's that simple. We are hot wired to fear/dislike something that we can't see, we hate uncertainty. That's why the base of most religions is faith, faith is basically believing in something that we can't see.

We're not afraid when our eyes are shut and most prefer lights off when trying to sleep. It's not just that it blinds us, it's an ancient learned fear that, that blindness means we can't even defend ourselves from the monsters in the darkness.
Fire must have been the greatest thing ever for the people who worked out how to make their own.
Uncertainty is correct because we know (knew) we were easy to kill at one time, under those conditions. I guess we still would be. Thus, fear. If you still experience fear of the dark, that is.

I don’t even know what I’m watching or who any of these characters are but I just found the video scrolling through RUclips and it looked cool so here I am. Needless to say I have no idea what’s happening but it’s cool hearing this guy use those big words that I have no idea the meaning of.

Great video. Gotta say, "Resting Comfortably" is my favorite song on all of the silent hill soundtracks. I could die to that song.

Interesting theory! I've taken a college course of psychology for my nursing degree recently and remember going over Freud's psychosexual mentality but the one and only thing that makes sense to me is his iceburg theory that you covered of the Id, Ego and Superego. Never would have thought of that for a classic Silent Hill game! Gives more insight of James story of his mind in Silent Hill! Thanks!

Fantastic video as always but i do not agree on Pyramid Head being James' ID, i think the monster is more of a SuperEgo-like figure, for mainly 2 reasons:
    1) SuperEgo mainly acts through guilt, resentment, it's like a father that scolds his child, it shows himself almost like a second entity within the psiche
    2) Even though most of the time it is presented as the "moral" part of the subconscious, it is (just like the ID and all of the subconscious) fundamentally driven by pleasure/desire, in this case to be punished, in a very feticized way
I would really like to hear your thoughts about my interpretation, obviously i didn't come here to dismantle your work, i love how much SH is open to interpretation so i just really enjoy debating theories and other stuff related to the serie :)

for Persona game fans out there, Pyramid head is James persona. A reflection of his inner self.

I think Pyramid head is more akin to be his shadow than his persona.

Thats exactly what it is, its not a shadow or a veil it's a manifestation of his guilt.

If they ever make a new silent hill game, they NEED TO adopt these concepts again!

i think Pyramid head is a guide/ protector, since he always kills the other mary, which is trying to decive, or stop james.
and PH never outright tries to kill james, since he just can run away from him
