Brought up in a family where I grew up seeing my aunt, cousin and sister practice dance, where men & women both can skip whatever important work they are into but cannot miss the chance to watch a dance performance in television, I always desired to learn dance. Attending dance performances were regular affairs. Strangely I never learnt it despite being encouraged by my family members, especially my mother.
At a very tender age I watched my aunt practice dance and picked up steps and successfully did it whenever there was a request in a family gathering.
But again strange enough I never took any formal training! I instead took to sarod.
Dance has always remained the most fascinating and exciting form of performing art to me. The mudras, the foot steps, the posture, the body movements, the percussion .....and the ensemble always enchanted me and whenever I watch a performance, I dance within.
This Odissi dance workshop in Nrityagram suddenly ignited my passion for dance after quite sometime.
And I suddenly remember Nrityagram was founded by Protima Gauri Bedi who took to dance when she was in her late twenties. Oneday she was set to attend a fashion show and barged into a wrong auditorium in Bombay and watched Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra's Odissi performance which changed her life forever.
    Dance can change life.

Hi Tanisha. I'm not sure if you're asking about me or about the choreographer of this piece. I teach in Bangalore... but this video is from the Nrityagram residency a few years ago. They are also based in Bangalore and are amazing teachers. :)

Tanisha Banerjee - Nrityagram is in Bangalore. You can look them up and maybe apply for their residency if you're interested. In Kolkata there are a lot of great teachers too. Write to me on Instagram @thedancertravels and we can talk if you like. :)
