Every time you have the green ring sonic is able to control his body and rescues the player from death before exe was able to regain control if you dont have the ring when you make a bad choice you die a terrible death
Mania ! He took the good choice because the goal is to live with Knuckles and get everyone else killed. But if you didn't notice he got a green ring earlier. Green rings allow sonic to gain control before exe slaughters you.
