The Boshin War (戊辰戦争, Boshin Sensō, "War of the Year of the Yang Earth Dragon"), sometimes known as the Japanese Revolution, was a civil war in Japan, fought from 1868 to 1869 between forces of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and those seeking the Meiji Restoration of political power to the Imperial Court.
@WALN Zell The emperor was just a puppet. The real power was in the hand of leaders of anti-government forces(Choshu and Satsuma). Same goes to the emperors of Taisho and Showa.
D'lish Donut Emperor had ruled Japan until the 10th century. After that, emperor has had no political power despite the fact that he was officially called the head of Japan.
Am I the only one, focusing on the story, who feels yet another civil war coming up? After all, it wasn't the emperor himself who did all the fighting.
The shogun force could've been able to held on the castle for a long time if they had hidden the ammunition within the castle where it's less likely that a cannonball would hit it then hiding it on a tower where it's much likely to be hit.

So this seems to convey the following: -Shogun bans Tozama from court politics -Tozama get wealthy from foreign trade -Shogun bans foreign trade -Shogun gets weakened anyway? What was the point then? Wouldn't it have been more effective for the shogun to seize the Tozama's trade monopoly for themself?
The Tokugawa shoguns mantained a tradition of following and conserving ancient traditions (sounds funny). When the portugueses arrived at japan, they brough guns, western clothing and cannons of the 16 century and christianism, wich made some daymios to convert thenselves to christianism. Japan embraced the advances that arrived with the portuguese, but when the first Tokugawa shogun arrived to his sit of power he was afraid that western culture and religion could damage japan's culture and cause internal strife, so he banned the portugueses and closed trade with then. Trade with china and korea would be banned also since the shogun had real problems with then, these are the reasons why Japan closed trade with foreigners

This is a much forgotten time. I like how America did help the Shogun. And in time I think they lead them to joining us in WW1. when the Empire of Japan was made. I know the Shogun lost but if you look at the aftermath of hte Boshin war. Best of both sides were used. I think it was after WW1 is when we did them wrong.
I’m years late, so sorry in advance, but it’s actually they who did us and others wrong with their nonsensical war mongering. America ain’t no saint, but blame must be placed appropriately and correctly.
i got to say i understand the need of the change that happened. i dont disagree it was needed and the restoration was something that had to happen. in reality the tokugawa family where tyrants in thier own right but... for those loyal and good samurai that sided withthe emperor i feel bad for them. once the emperor won against the shogun forces be back stabbed every samurai supporter who didnt wish to completly become western. japan under the restoration became free from the shogun rule but came very close to losing thier culture to our western ancestors. and those who didnt convert fully to western ways where be belittled and even punished/arrested and even some killed. not all samurai where upset because of lose of power. just like in many things in life not all of one group is evil or bad. the emperor himself was just as bad as the tokugawas. just he had diffrent ideals.
+Darkness56 Yeah but to be fair the Samurai were oppressive and evil people thinking they were better than everyone else. Their backward way of thinking was why the emperor had to get rid of them.
***** They were feudalist and oppressed the poor. Being Samurai is a birth right rather than something you earn. The Emperors constitution made every man equal before him.

He also started the satsuma rebellion and inspired the movie "the last samurai" although the movie is not accurate

We have some conflicting stories with Shogun 2. Watch the Imperial and Shogunate intros then this. The whole foreign trade thing is a lot different.
