My platoon went months using a bucket and soap during first year in the desert. Worked as good as can be expected. Although everything felt stiff and starched after it dried out.

I can imagine. It's not ideal but it works perfectly fine. It is more physically Monotonous though.

I'm a bit surprised by how much detergent you put in.
I've never used that much even in a washing machine.
I use laundry detergent sheets now [not as large & heavy as liquid] & I tear a sheet in to quarters for small hand wash items.
      .
"The dirt and germs come off the clothes and go into the water,” Richardson, the author of the bestselling “Laundry Love,” explained. “They get trapped in the surfactant [compounds in detergent that lift dirt and stains from clothes] and then, when the rinse comes, the surfactant goes down the drain. If you use too much detergent, it can’t rinse out, so the surfactant actually resettles back in your clothes, and all of the dirt resettles back into your clothes with it. So more detergent means your clothes are actually dirty."

Buy that stuff from the dollar store and you'll understand why I used so much. With my regular detergent would probably only take a 1/4 cap full for a bucket that size. It works for as cheap as it is but the stuff is pretty thin. I'd say just thinner than the consistency of antibacterial hand soap. Regular liquid detergent is some pretty thick stuff.
