OMG ... I didn't know Shorty passed away untill I saw the comments. I was one of his biggest fans and would always go to see him play in local blues clubs. Amazing to watch and a gracious man who always had the time to say hello and sign my CDs. I saw him last fall of 2021 and he signed my Topsy Turvy CD and I think that made him happy. I will miss you Shorty ! God bless and RIP !!! You are a legend !
This man/myth/legend Guitar Shorty was the primary influence on what would eventually become Jimi Hendrix's unmistakable sound. He was married to Jimi's step-sister and when he played the Seattle area, Jimi would follow him around like a pup and soak up all of his licks. So when it sounds and feels like he is sounding like Jimi, it was actually the other way around. Real talk. Shorty is very approachable, always walks through the audience serenading the people (does not miss a lick as they take pictures with him and hang all over him!), and is a very nice man. Long Live Guitar Shorty! ;-)
Dorian Gilmer hey there dorian,i know guitar shorty from Houston. I was at a blues jam and shorty participated and when I heard the sound from the first note,i was a fan. Then one sunday afternoon at the big easy in Houston,i got to play the drums when guitar shorty and his band got up there. Wow what a day that was. I played a whole set. It was pretty cool.
+Dorian Gilmer Wow! Thanks for this history. This man is a phenome! I knew it when I saw him in Los Angeles! His sister in law let me in on his secret when I raved about him. Guess I was going on and on to the right person, lol.
Maybe another Hall of Fame should be created. It seems to me the RRHOF is more of a circle jerk than honoring the musicians. We can start with Shorty. Absolutely inspiring.
i was fortunate enough to hear Guitar Shorty tell it too! how is brother-in-law would go AWOL (hendrix) in the military when stationed in Wash. & his brother in law was playing at a club, he'd go awol to watch him.
One of the best version of this song i ever heard,,, the others,, Roy Buchanan, and Buckweat Zydeco,, but this guitar solo,, well,, let me tell you,, wish i had been there,, what a monster ......out of words
A real strong presence and I love the spoken word approach to this song which is basically a conversation between to blokes. Sadly he passed recently. How blues should be played imo.
17.5-minute song and every second is superb. Not too many people could do that (any song). I only discovered this guy a few years ago. Prior to that, my favorite guitarist was Eric Clapton. Still is but it is such a tough call. They both think musically. Whereas, we mortals think in a language, they must think in melodies to get that much magic working. Hope to see him some time soon in the NY area.
+Isidor Farash So true about musicians thinking in melodies, Isidor. Count me among the mortals who can only think in words, despite wearing out my fingertips on the fret-board of a Fender Strat, yet STILL getting nowhere in the ballpark of what real guitar players do without breaking a sweat.
Met Guitar Shorty in San Angelo,Tx. At a Blues Club where my friend was the front act. We sat with him over a beer and as we call it in Texas "shot the shit" CAF guy with killer stories and a great laugh. He played that club Sealy Flats many times and we would love hanging out with the legend Guitar Shorty Master Guitar Man!
I had the pleasure to hear and see Guitar Shorty in of all places...a local bar in Pahoa Hawaii back in the mid 90s. He was awesome...walking out into the street and playing his ass off in the Hawaiian night. I was blown away that Guitar Shorty even booked a gig there. This was-is a tiny old sugar plantation town with old school locals and a bunch of hippies. Back then there wasnt even a traffic light! Man I was blessed.
Saw him play in Ukiah ca about 20 years ago. Played 2 hour and a half sets . His guitars where two beautiful G&L s. Astonishing someone that age could rock so hard. Bought 2 cds which he signed. Hung out after the show talking to fans. Hope I make it to heaven so I can see him again
Its probably just me .. whatever, there is a hint of rage against the machines "killing in the name" song in his super great version of "Hey Joe" and i love it. The bassline while singing "Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses" .. super cool

"think musically" .. nicely put .. i think i know what you mean
.. Miles Davis comes to mind
Musiciens think musically on our behalf, us mere mortals.
The old time blues artist normally played 9pm - 2-3 am multiple days/week, they knew how to put on a show unlike modern clock watchers

This guy influenced Jimmy Hendrix, fact
Band has hay joe. Shorty kinda
Love shorty but hendrix hes not.

He was doing a little Hendrix thing at the end
So many bald white men. But he is good.

Hendrix couldn't either but it didn't matter much. Same with Mick Jagger.
