A July 2011 visit to Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum yields a nice surprise. The famous K4s 1361's tender has returned to Altoona and is fully assembled and ready for paint.
This was really nice to see.....ya see, I am the guy that DID ALL of those rivets. and yes, the frame was straightened , the coal bunker is new and for the most part a LOT of it was new. Thanks for posting.
Boy, I can only imagine what it would be like to see Juniata's Jewel stretch her legs out one more time after a long overdue restoration... Unfortunately I get worried that that's the best she will ever be, is a warm fuzzy memory that I will never get to see again.
Anyway, the tender is finally going to be painted at UTLX's former PPR shop just about a quarter mile from the museum itself. It was being moved onto Altoona Pipe and Steel's switching yards for an NS SW150 when, incredibly, she derailed on the horrible track. They' got her back on the rails though, and now we wait.
@trainfann1 All over the state of PA. Some of its parts are at Steamtown NHS in Scranton, the boiler is in Orbisonia PA at the East Broad Top RR, and some pieces, including the drivers and the cab and obviously the tender are in Altoona. The plan is to get all pieces back in Altoona, the boiler will be assesed and repaired, and then hopefully the locomotive will be put back together into operating condition. Thats the story i got from the newspaper "Altoona Mirror"
@TheMythfox Current FRA regulations probably demand that she have one. You gotta remember that after the Gettysburg accident that the rules were changed right in the middle of 1361's rebuild so suddenly they had NEW regulations and specs they have do deal with for the firebox and boiler along with other issues. If that light is on there, it means they are serious about getting her up to "road spec" and using her.
"1361's tender ready for paint" or, 1361's tender stripped of paint, ready for a torch. its probably being reassembled basically as a cosmetic thing. probably due to head to the pennsylvania railroad museum. i really doubt that 1361 will ever be reassembled, as most of her parts are scattered or gone completely. but, one can dream. and we always have another K4s if we REALLY need to see some pennsy steam again.
Heyy, the tender and the locomotive have been reunited. To be fair the locomotive is pretty much a pile of scrap that barely resembles even a generic set of boiler parts, let alone a specific engine.
Deborah Renaut small group of guys have been working on it. Very good chance within 2 years we will have. 1361 back on the rails. Just will take more moneys
Amazing

Don't forget the T1 #5550 that is being built. They already cast the first driving wheel.

I think this tender needs an early painting.
I have seen the boiler and I looks likes they are restoring the train I found the the image on Google PRR 1361
It’s been sandblasted again, hopefully they can get some work done to try to reassemble it.
mike92586 what’s that?
are they restoring it
Yes, You should see the tender now.
sorry to say but they already canceled the restoration plans in 2010 but they hope to reconstruct the boiler and whistle
