_Yoshi's Island_ and _Yoshi's Story_ both took interesting approaches to lives-based systems.
Losing a life in _Yoshi's Island_ causes you to be set back either to the start of the level you were on or to your most recently cleared checkpoint ring, whereas running out of lives sends you back to the start of the level. While it seems inconsequential on the surface, running out of lives in _Yoshi's Island_ can mean needing to replay a long, difficult stage and scour it for collectables all over again, so stocking up on lives by collecting coins and finding 1ups is advised.
_Yoshi's Story_ doesn't have a traditional lives counter but instead makes your lives actual Yoshis. Under normal circumstances, you start a run with six Yoshis and get a game over if you run out, but you can get up to two more by successfully completing Chapters 2 and 3 with Yoshi eggs in tow found only in specific levels. The special Yoshis you can get from Chapters 2 and 3 have bigger egg explosions, consider all normal fruit to be their favourite, and like chili peppers, so they're better to use than the original six, but losing one means he's gone until you find him again in a future run since the friendly White Shy Guys who normally rescue Yoshis you've lost can't rescue special Yoshis. However, if you finish a run with one or both special Yoshis in your party, you get to retain each of them for your next run.

I haven't played Yoshi's Story in a longggg time. But that's a good point with Yoshi's Island, some of those levels could take some time to complete. It's a surprisingly open game for a "linear" platformer.

Fantastic Video! I believe you hit the nail right on the head with this. Everything you mentioned is pretty much what I look for in a platformer nowadays. I'll admit I'm extremely biased because I love all the Donkey Kong Country games. They've set such a high standard in my mind on what a platformer can be, and the points you made are exactly why I personally love them and the genre itself.

Thank you! I also love the DKC series, but bias aside, I think they're some of the best around and that still holds true today.

Very good video! I think the controls & atmosphere are what grab me the most in platformers but I can't ignore level design & progression too.
DK is still the best to this day imo 😁

This is a really well made video dude. This got recommended on my home page and I had no idea how small this channel was until after I finished it, but the voice over is perfect and the editing is clean. Keep it up!

This video finally explained why despite being a game made for children super mario world and donkey kong country have been some of the most difficult and frustrating games I have ever played. I havent played too many 2d platformers outside of metroid since i was a kid. I honed my skills at single player fps games which require different skillsets and havent really played games that punished you for not engaging with its systems. I found out real quick i was rusty at mario and while mario u was boring mario world was challenging and frustrating. Same with crash, over the past 10 or so years modern games phased out inconveniences like lives so being reintroduced to them so suddenly was like a shock to my brain.

It's always the little things that are more subtle. Many developers no longer use lives, when in reality, most of the greatest platformers utilized life-based systems and built the games around that such as in DKC2 and Super Mario World.
