Mon mari est un tres fort admirateur de Ravel. Il pense que le second mouvement rassemble Le Gibet de la merveilleuse suite Gaspard de la Nuit avec sa grande tristesse. Émouvant! Bravo Daniil il a dit.

Until 2017, I've been looking for a recording of Trifonov playing this piece, and finally, he performed it in Paris on May 20th 2017. I've been there and I must say I was a bit confused. I love the 2nd mov, but I hardly heard the piano (very low volume of playing). It was too soft.
Then, I found this video and I found the exact same feeling. Then, I listend to it over and over again. And I felt in love with this version. The way he plays the 2n mov is unique. At the begining, I was confused by the freedom he took (11:10 , there is like a break here) but it's my favorite now.
So I listened to this version during 2 years until a concert in Vienna in 2019.
I was so excited, I wanted to feel this in LIVE, this unique and so delicate and soft playing, the very low piano volume here (15:28) …I love it
But in Vienna, the way he played this was more « conventional ».
I guess Trifonov, in 2017, started to play this piece, and now he has a better understanding of it.
I really love this 2017 version, but I also get that this is not only Trifonov, this is also a matter of Ravel.
Freedom doesn’t mean everything is allowed.
I can get it by discovering classical music.
But in this 2017 version, Trifonov’s freedom walks hand by hand with purity.
    Thank you for posting this

I can't believe it! Trifonov is the first pianist to make me almost cry with the 2nd movement. What pathos, what emotions! This is the most profoundly affected rendition I have ever heard! Marvelous Trifonov!

I sometimes find his dynamic contrasts and rubato too pronounced. Listen to Zimerman for the 2nd movement: his flows evenly, and to my ears, even more beautifully.

What a lush and terrifyingly wondrous performance of the first movement! An achingly beautiful and poignant second movement! I call Daniil the Priest of the Piano and I look forward to hearing him play at Caramoor, Katonah,NY this July Thank you!!!

Mr. Trifonov adds dynamics which are not in the score. They are not better than what Ravel has written.
