DIY Reverse Osmosis Water Maker for a Kayak or Sailboat - Solar Powered - Desalinating Ocean Water

  • Solar Kayaking project. Total cost is just under $1200. This is a version 1.0 Reverse Osmosis (RO) water maker system that I fit on my Nucanoe Pursuit 13.5 kayak. I used it for 4 days on the Gulf Coast ICW covering 60 miles from Port Isabel to Port Mansfield, Texas. It worked great but definitely has some room for improvement and volume reduction. The system is easily portable and can be repurposed for use on boats, sailboats, or just about anywhere you need water from sea water or brackish water. Overall, very happy with how it came out! Planning to redesign and reattack the ICW next summer, sub to get notified of upgrades and mods!

    Unbelievably practical and inexpensive setup. I would look next at getting an DC pump, to avoid the heavy inverter and full sized AC pump. You could definitely de-bulk this system, and with even less water requirements you could easily look at downsizing filters for sure. This could be incredibly useful for boaters, campers and basically anyone off-grid - Great video!

    I would be really interested in a DC pump setup. I don't care if its a little more expensive but this would be an awesome water maker for my small boat.

      Problem is they are a LOT more expensive if you can even find one and size it correctly.

    This is, by far, the easiest and most simplistic diy RO system I’ve seen yet! I’m going to use this as the basis for my own system on or DE38. I can’t wait to get started now. Thanks man; you saved me a ton of useless parts!

    Excellent set up. Perfect for what you are doing. I'm no expert but wonder if you reverse the flow at the end of a trip, as in use clean drinking water to flow 'backwards' through the system to clean the filters of whatever maybe stuck there. Look forward to further videos.

    New to the channel. Great build! What about a switch for the ac inverter? You could run it from the battery to up front and then you don’t have to switch those on and off on the inverter itself

    Howdy. I am in the process of gathering intel on these DIY desalinators. From what I understand, most of these reccomend about 800PSI to be shot through the R.O.M.(Reverse Osmosis Membrane). Your pump is 1700PSI. Does the regulator handle on the end control the amount of PSI that pushes the h20 through? Excellent video, a huge help!

      The pump does push around 1700, the pressure is regulated with the valve on the end. You open more to reduce the pressure, but it increases the out flow. You need the out flow to sweep out the brine (the salts that get removed from the dirty water). It works really well this way.

    Has anyone mentioned the 12vdc pumps from Pumptec (Model113c) which pumps to 1000 psi. I have one and it seems like a quality pump and is very compact.

    you run your bilge water through your drinking water filters?? put the 3way valve on the other side of the housings.

    Green works showing battery powererd pressure washer $148 but can only out 800 psi at 40v ( not sure if this is enough pressue) you could run off the 40v battery they use but would still need to charge off 120v. might suffice for some days then need shore power to avoide having your inverter alog - would depend on the trip

    RO membrane housing is wrong...goes to element..can't find 21" housing less than $500. Got any sugestions? any reason not to use a 40" or any other size RO setup? Is your choice of the "thin film Dow unit because of the low pressure?? of the P Washer pump or will any seawater RO can and element work?

      It held up okay, the brass parts were showing corrosion signs. I read other blogs from sailors, and they say they generally last one full sailing season (8 months or so). And they just replay them each year, not a bad solution for $100 or less for the pump.

    Why did did you choose a 21" instead of 15"? I ask because I'm wondering if pump gpm needs to match the membrane

      Availability and fitting compatibility. I don't remember details, but do remember the 15" was harder to procure and match up with other pieces.

    Hard to build a high pressure DC pump without expensive components. I think the trick would be to modify a pressure washer by changing the motor that is connected to the pump.

      For that, I bet the best power to weight would be a brushless DC motor for RC vehicles.

    HP pump is Rated for 13 A that’s 1560 W inverter is 1500 W !! Do you have problem to start HP pump ?
    Motor is going to pull more amps when starting is inverter shutting down then ?
    You should have minimum 2kW Inverter

      I never tripped a breaker or had a shutdown for pulling to many amps.

      To repurpose this for seawater, you really need high quality Stainless Steel, which would add a lot to the cost.
