I can tell you that the overlap is because people with ASD usually feel misunderstood by their parents, family, and friends. The continual bullying for being “weird” leads to shut down and eventually masking to try to fit in. This eventually leads to feeling like a fraud and worrying so much about being accepted that it’s easier to just stay home and avoid the mental exhaustion.

I hear you on that I have ASD and been bullied my entire life because of how 'weird' or 'strange' I was. That's why I stay at home with my computer and books socialising is exhausting just because people do things differently doesn't mean we're not human to.

Do you know anything that has already been researched on this topic and may already have solutions?

Communication Disorder being she often cuts in short replies (uh-hu, yeah, ok etc) before you finish saying a sentence to her but it's because she's listening to a voice conversation in her head of which you're interrupting. Her talking to the voices and visual hallucinations are getting worse.

The brain is a very complex machine and this means there are a lot of mechanisms to understand such mental conditions. If we talk about mechanisms there could be symptoms which are quite similar to other mental problems but they could have completely different origin. For this reason it could be quite difficult to considere any comorbidity between such mental issues. Schizophrenia usually have similar symptoms to autism but in the case of autism it is known to be caused by extra-synapses which cause extra connection in local scale but low connection in general scale of the brain. I haven't read any investigation about extra-synapses and schizophrenia but the opposite!!. So in my opinion it may be very almost impossible to have autism and schizophrenia at same time

@@andreaphillips7595It is absolutely wrong. Nobody have demonstarted any comorbidity of autsim further than OCD and there isn't any investigation of autists developing schyzophrenia in any way!. Some investigations pointed that the hiperplasticity of autism brings protection to Alzheimer and Alzheimer is quite similar to schyzophrenia as it's caused by caotic neuron disconnections. Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Tesla. Turing and many more scientists and inventors had autism. If autism wouldn't exist the human progress in science would be still really poor! Rational thinking cannot be caused by any brain deffect but the opposite. Some psychologists say that Asperger have lack of empathy. And people with BDP and psychopaths have "hiper-empathy" but they don't care so much about your feelings or if you die. All aspies that I know are the most humble and kind people that I know so psychiatrists should investigate better what empathy is really about before accusing the people of ASD of a lack of empathy.

However, it's known that tourette cause social problems specially when they have more noervous problems in their lives and is precisely when they could get positive diagnosis of autism but it's also probablly not autism as autism cannot be temporary. More investigation should be needed to know if there really exist any comorbidity of autism and tourette. I still haven't met any asperger with any comorbidity except those with wrong diagnosis. If they are hostile or if they have lots of prejudices (not based on science) it's probablly a wrong diagnosis of ASD. Theses cases usually get many diagnosis before getting the wrong one of ASD.

I'm assuming that by "we" you mean persons with ASD. Also, it's incorrect to call people with schizophrenia "schizophrenics". People are not defined by their disorder and using such words increases stigma. To the point about this presentation being "total bull". As Dr Coman said, ASD may be diagnosed as early as 2 years of age. At this point given the developmental capabilities of the child, it is tricky to distinguish between conditions. Nonetheless, despite the limitations, prevention treatment or interventions must be offered. Both options have drawbacks but the earlier treatment is offered, the better the chances of assisting a child in their future development. As Dr Coman explained in his lecture some core features, such as communication and interaction deficits, may be present in both populations and since schizophrenia proper may take years to manifest, it would be unethical to just wait and see what happens without providing any assistance.

I look kind of normal and act kind of normal, so why not pretend, I mean there is no real cure just ways to cope, anyway. Plus, when people hear that I am schizophrenic, they act like they should avoid me as much as possible, and can you blame them, just depressed people are a lot easier to deal with.
