    thank you so much for sharing Tomy. loved the skill you showed on the bandsaw good stuff. questions please . you used epoxy on the carbon fiber strip . why not tight bond is there a reason ? .the plates on the headstock were they carbon fiber also or the thin veneers you get from wood craft dyed ? again thank you

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  6 лет назад

      Hi Walter, The top veneer is Ebony and you can get them at either StewMac or LMII (luthier mercantile international). the back one is a died one and is extremely thin. The fiber rod I use epoxy because it is a much better way to glue it in then titebond. I'm not a big fan of using epoxy. But there are times it's what you need to use. Thanks for watching Walter!

    Hey Tomy, I love your work. I have a question you epoxied the truss rod wont that keep the rod from functioning?? Thank you Scott

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  6 лет назад

      the carbon fiber truss rod are not meant to function like a traditional one. Meaning that once install it will never change. There will be no adjustment needed . that is why they are epoxied in. It adds a tremendous amount strength in the neck and also helps the vibrations in the neck to travel in the body..

      There was a few discussions on the mandolin cafe' about carbon truss rods, so I knew what Tomy was talking about when he discussed it with me and I agreed. This instrument will have sustain forever :D

    I love that accent on the back of the headstock. Is there a reason you do not have a volute on the back of the headstock?

    • @ThePipeous
      @ThePipeous 6 лет назад +1

      I didn't know we were doing it but i love it

    • @HovingtonInstruments
      @HovingtonInstruments  6 лет назад +4

      From what I understand with volutes, it was introduced in the 70 when the wood selection was not the best and the necks were laminated.. The idea was to strenghten the transition between the neck and headstock..(this area was weaken futher with the truss rod channel). With a one piece neck, and a epoxied carbon fibre rod there is no need for a volute. The carbon fiber rod can hold all the tension by itself and as you can see from the video it extends in the headstock which will prevent the area to break. the back veneer it just to balance the color scheme we have already on the instrument. It does add a bit of extra strengh though...

    I have decided I want to try the iRig system for this unit. I am hoping I can slide the little mic into an F hole... www.long-mcquade.com/index.php?page=products&ProductsID=81124&ChildProductID=0&msg=add&do=32

      Barry Wilson this seems like a nice system . It should clip tho the wider part of the f- holes without any issues.

    Such a terrible waste of material to cut this neck from a solid block instead of laminating a neck.
