  • Should people take down confederate statues illegally? Vote in our poll at: tytnetwork.com/monument
Multiple protesters have been arrested for destroying a Confederate statue. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Brett Erlich, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. www.tytnetwork.com/join
"DURHAM, N.C.-You could argue that the Civil War actually ended in this North Carolina city. Although Robert E. Lee’s more famous surrender took place at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia, Confederate General Joseph Johnston’s surrender to William T. Sherman two weeks later at Bennett Place, a farm on the outskirts of town, was larger and ended the war in the east.
You could also argue that, as in many places across the South, the war never totally ended here. Durham was the site of major battles over segregation and the home of Klan leaders, and a statue commemorating “THE BOYS WHO WORE THE GRAY” stood outside the old county courthouse on Main Street.
    Until Monday night.
Around 7 p.m. Monday, a group of protesters, inspired by the violent riots over the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia, decided that if Durham County was in no hurry to take down the rebel soldier, they’d do so themselves.”*

Confederate flag and monuments belong in a museum and/Or a special memorial or space meant to educate on the civil war. Those who were key people of the confederacy should not be on government property but in places meant for people to learn of history.

In Germany, publicly displaying Nazi paraphernalia is illegal.
In USA, celebrating slave owners and traitors seems to be the norm.
Everything you have been taught at school in history has been a giant whitewash to hide the brutality of your colonist hordes and lazy gentry class of the deep South.
To put things in perspective: What you call Thanksgiving, the native Americans call a day of mourning.
What has been wrong the past century is how the sensitivities of white snowflake losers in the south and apologist fools has been pandered to for too long.

Move the statues to battlefields and museums. Preserve history, but in the right way. The history of the Confederacy should be remembered as a cautionary tale, not glorified as something grand and noble. A statue at a battlefield memorializes the fallen. A statue in front of a State building endorses the ideals of the Confederacy. And you don't immortalize the losers of a war at your Statehouse. That'd be like flying the British flag over the courthouse because they lost the Revolutionary War.

no literally doesn't mean time travel and killing them as kids, literally airbrushing, means taking some form of artwork, painting or photo and airbrushing it to alter in some way. So when Stalin had someone close to him killed, they would literally airbrush them out the photo documentation, as well as edit the history books so that person didn't exist in any historical accounts.

Those statues shouldn't be displayed in public but we shouldn't applaud vandalism either because that's a slippery slope into becoming the exact thing we're fighting against. Also, they're technically art as well so they should be preserved in a setting that displays them for what they are which are remnants of our history as ugly as it is.

      @lucypritchard5842 7 лет назад +3

No don't put statues in a museum, a portrait will suffice. Statues take a lot of effort to make and the whole thing about them is that they're permanent, we shouldn't suggest to people that we want confederate soldiers to be celebrated, they were entirely on the wrong side of history and should be shown as such.

Inzaynmembrain97 Agreed. While it was satisfying to see it destroyed, I would have preferred it done in a legal and civilized manner. A few of these statues are being placed in historical museums, after all.
However, given the circumstances, I can understand the mob mentality behind it as well as the one man who placed a flag at the pedestal.

    • @donrutter6765

+Inzaynmembrain97 Funny how the North kept their slaves long after the South released theirs. Delaware being the last state. The Civil war was centralized government usurp of states rights, tyranny as outlined in the Jeffersonian constitution. If you study about the Northern/southern industry you would know that slavery was an excuse for the war. Most people dont study the war past high school, but it was over states rights/north south industry, and the Louisiana purchase. There is a radio recording on youtube of Julius Howell in 1930. He was a southern captain and explains what really happened. It isnt what you were taught in school. They wanted to amend the constitution. The war caused ever expanding government with ever expanding taxes. Our forefathers would have rolled over in their graves.

To my mind the Catholics fought against the discrimination meted out by the Protestants and their position mirrors if anything to that the blacks of the USA.

It happened so soon after the war of independence and shortly before we became a republic so there are statues to people who lost the civil war, but they also took part in the war of independence and were part of the government that formed the republic so its impossible to say it's a statue to a traitor because they weren't.

Just so you know, in their opinion I doubt they think they were fighting against America. In their view, the South was their America and they were simply rebelling against The Union since it no longer allowed them to do what they want and didn't respect State's rights. They didn't view it was fighting America, just the Northern half which wasn't representative of their values. They wanted to break away and form their own America with just their values. However their values included slavery, etc so obviously it wasn't right. I just think if you want to honestly represent their perspective, they weren't fighting against America in their minds, just "The Union".

One problem with the slave statment.
Freeing the slaves was just to punish the south.
Also a very important thing to note about the civil war is Lincoln basicly had a fort armed near the south and basicly sent a letter stating they were about to be attacked.which is what actually sparked the war and along with state rights like the right to decide how they shod taxe and manage them sleves.

Serouisly have you not seen what happens when you post something innocent like a kid with a american flag.basicly poeple say it's ok to punch them cause they are white(I wish I was kidding but this is how bad things have gotten).
Also the civil war was about state rights not slavery.freeing the slaves was just a punishment for the south trying to become a seprate country due to their rights being ignored.
By the way you liberals are repeating the past by ignoring the right rights and what they actually have to say.instead opting to beat them up which is what actually lead to the girls death cause the right finally snapped from being beat up and even killed by the lefties.

Ia'm not talking common burglary people , i'm talking about Tens of thousands of dollars for every man woman and child in the USA STOLEN from the American people . all the theft adds up to TRILLIONS such is our insane national Dept !!!

I am Not Kidding , you think you own your stuff ? , the government can declare martial law and take it from You at Gun Point if you refuse . the Fema Corps is basically the Secret police of the USA , they can do whatever they want to you , Executive Orders . So sheep enjoy the sleep , when the Fema Corps and other government agencies come a knocking to take you away ..... ooops I mean to " escort you " to uh the Concentrat . .. .. ooops I mean the Fema Camps , don't say you were not warned . I hear many states are trying to pass laws for mandatory Vaccinations . oh yeah I forgot no profit motive there :P silly me . the medical industry only treats illnesses , it doesn't cure them because it's not profitable . the pharmaceutical industry in the USA is over 250 BILLION DOLLARS a year ! , so yeah they can afford to Lobby your government to change the laws . remember " corporations " are so called people with a so called right to government privileges and such . I'm sure a fraction of that 250 BILLION + a year can afford such endeavors Indefinitely . enjoy the Cognitive Dissonance , truth will do that to you , i'm not sorry , i'm worried , and Distressed over the fate of Humanity . you common folk are so lucky you can't see the Big picture , there might be a chance we won't perish , but it's starts with You .

Taken to its logical conclusion, all the statues of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson should be taken down as well since they both owned slaves. Should we do that too?

ppl who think the civil war was primarily about slavery dont know their history!
the civil was started over banking, states rights and slavery! in that order!
but historical revisionists have made sure we forgot about the banking part!
