- In our continuing coverage in anime songs based on fake restaurants, here's the Nyan Nyan song from Macross Frontier. "Nyan" is supposed to be the sound a cat makes in Japan, and thanks to my two years of Chinese, "ni hao" means "hello" in Mandarin. What saying hello in Chinese has to do with cats is beyond me, and perhaps it's better that we never found out. Alright?
And don't ask me what "deculture" means, either. I grew up on Robotech, not Macross, and for me Protoculture will always be something akin to The Force crossed with space fuel made from special space plant seeds. So "deculture" is probably some Macross thing. Don't think about it too hard and laugh at the dumb song, okay?
As always, when this anime gets licensed in the United States, please support your local anime companies! Or else we'll only get rererereredubs of Dragon Ball Z. Macross Frontier itself is really cool, with lots of missiles and badass mecha fights and LISTEN TO MY SONG!
Also I hear Kucinich is the ONLY candidate who has spoken on the Macross Island issue. Don't forget the sacrifices of the UN Spacy! Vote Kucinich 2008!

If no one knows, the restaurant is called niang niang which is pronounced identical to nyan nyan and its sells fish dishes (thus the cat sound)

The Zentraedi language is a simplified form of the Protoculture language, much like Orwell's Newspeak is to English. "Deculture" is their version of Newspeak "ungood".
However, like a lot of English words with negative connotations (such as "bad", "sick", "gnarly", and even "awesome"), by Ranka Lee's time, "deculture" had acquired an extremely positive meaning. I've always enjoyed that bit of anime xenolinguistics. They really thought through how humans and Zentraedi had changed after going to war.

In this context, "Deculture" can be translated to human language as "shocking", "incomprehensible" "unbelievable" or "unexpected". The prefix "Yack" is sometimes added.

I haven't watched all series but the implications I see are that they developed into (or at least inspired) various cultures across this universe

Yeah, PROTOCulture in the Macross universe was the prototype culture that all (more or less) humanoid cultures across the galaxy derived from, and can be loosely compared to "The Force" (as in the video description of 'Robotech', which I haven't seen since the '80s and don't remember, while i've seen the Macross version of it within the last couple weeks for the first time).
Music in Macross has something of a vaguely magical effect in bringing different peoples together peacefully to set aside their differences... accidentally "infecting" some of the Zentradi with music - "culturing" - is what eventually brought the war with the Zentradi to an end without the complete extinction of Earth, as the Zentradi had been very carefully isolated from the ProtoCulture, divided men from women into separate space fleets, and indoctrinated into a merciless "Proud Warrior Race" replacement culture until they forgot any semblance of humanity. ('Macross Frontier' mentions a couple times the singer who "cultured" the Zentradi - Lin Minmay - and Ranca sings Lin Minmay's signature song "My Boyfriend is a Pilot" in one episode.)
I've been taking "deculture" to be a Zentradi loan-word to refer to the feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment after experiencing "culture" - in the case of the restaurant song, sort of like saying "delicious!" It seems to be used in a similar way wherever else it is used - "excellent!" or "great" or "bravo!" The translation to "shocking"/"incomprehensible"/"unexpected" really isn't far off from that, if you take the next logical step to "fabulous", "fantastic", "amazing", "stunning"!
One of these days, I really need to re-watch 'Robotech', to compare the differences to 'Super Dimension Fortress Macross' - I have some dim memory of Lin Minmay being very irritating in 'Robotech' for some reason, but don't remember quite why or how; I was kinda surprised that she was a more sympathetic character than I remembered in 'Macross'....
