It does seem that way as I haven’t seen a photo of another with a rear sight bead like that but there aren’t really that many Western Field photos out there. I suppose I could carefully grind it down……kind of stuck with it now. I DO think it was ruining my aim.
Very interesting, I liked all the research you did, a lot of detail. Only thing is you didn’t mention what it’s worth, unless I missed it. Thanks for what you do. God Bless
Never really discuss “worth” much, you will notice, when it comes to these classics beyond descriptions such as “cheap as can be” or “these can be pricey” for the reason that there are way to many variables that affect price in this lovely hobby of ours. Condition, how it’s equipped, rarity of options, intended use, and most of all, desirability......all these things affect what others would be willing to pay which is what sets the price. The manufacturer stepped out of the pricing game on the Western Field Model 30 a long time ago so there is no more MSRP so the only thing that sets the price is what someone pays for one. Checking gunbroker via “sold items” search is a good indicator of what the real world selling price is IF they sold any recently....and even then....what was its condition? Rarity of options? Shoot-ability? Not so easy.....broad terms like “cheap” or “expensive” then come in...... Funny anecdote....I was at a gun show recently with a crew of Milsurp Garage cronies and bumped into a friend. He had a beat up Carcano over his shoulder. He was quick to ask, “Hey, I just bought this....what do you think it’s worth?”. I said, “Nice find.....lets see....wood looks nice, action feels good.....what’d you pay?”. He said, “He wanted $450 but I talked him down to $370.....is that good....what’s it worth?”. I said, “No, you did alright....right now, today, these are going for $370 bucks”. You see? Nobody sets the price on these oldies but us. Thanks for tuning in. Stick around.
I posted to your other comment but in case you’re looking here.....try Numrich and look under Kessler for the R and L side and the screw. They have it all. Hopefully that fits.
I thought the Westernfield Model 30 was the brand name of the Stevens 520A. I bought a Westernfield 30 a few weeks ago, and it is a 520A. The bolt action shotgun I bought was a Glenfield 50, same as the Marlin 55.
It’s not a Marlin. It’s a Kessler. If you do a Google search for western field model 30 pump, you get a 520, if you do a Google search for western field model 30 Bolt, you get the Kessler.
From what you were showing us it certainly looks like that back sight was a after market addition. For a slug rifle use y a Do it yourself in the basement.
Also somebody saw the choke off of it I was wondering if I could put another one in? I don't even know I picked this thing up for 75 bucks and I don't think I got my money's worth...
Heck thanks for showing me that I need both parts on that bolt I need the claw and that spring thing. I probably won't even be able to find it will I I think I got ripped off on this thing
Have no fear, the extractor barely works even when installed! For $75 you hardly got ripped off….. Try Numrich for the extractor. Might have to search and cross reference a bit. They are pretty knowledgeable, give them a call.
Well, this certainly was one of the longest and most thoroughly done historic lessons of the Western Field. The BIG difference that I've seen between these Western Field by Kessler and even JC HIGGINS is that you can't remove the bolt without removing that screw! But with the Mossberg 185 K ( and D & C's) the bolt can be removed simply by pulling the trigger back! ruclips.net/video/wscsl4TB1wo/видео.html. I have both a Mossberg and a Western Field also made by Mossberg in 20 GA and have used them both with slugs and shot. Great value guns for short money.
The blueing on mine is about a 10 footer but I paid 100$ out the door for the old girl I’ve got a number of quality firearms in the safe but being the avid shooter I am I’ve got a affinity for bargains never met one I wouldn’t take I just wish it was a cheaper hobby
Might not be the cheapest hobby but certainly isn’t anywhere near the most expensive ones….plus, at least these guns are good investments and hold or go up in value over time.
@@MilsurpGarage yep that’s what I tell myself too but it’ll be my family reaping the rewards after that auction or however it goes down cuz this guy doesn’t sell any of his
No, please help with a correction if needed, appreciate it. That was an autocorrect error I'm sure. Hope the info I had for your new purchase was interesting. Subscribe! Tons of other stuff to explore!
@@MilsurpGarage OH! Very much thank you. I was not familiar so was curios. He bought a gun estate, he is a Marine at Cherry Point flight controller. But the kid loves his damned guns, good Lord. (LOL) I have a farm, so he grew up with it. Keep up the good work.
That rear sight looks like someone other than the manufacturer made it.
Love your videos 👍

Love trips down the rabbit hole
This one led to the Unbroken Clay Award.....gotta lose that rear sight bead.
Cool video. I just inherited a Western Field Model 30 and I googled it and found your video.
Does yours have that rear sight bead like mine has right near the bolt handle?
No mine doesn’t.
@@jeremyweible1368Yeah, I’m convinced mine was added by a previous owner and that it would be easier to hit clays with the “rear sight” removed.
Another informative video 👍

I humbly received a 12ga westernfield model 30 from my gpa years ago...
Nice.....nothing like a gifted, handed down shotgun. Enjoy.
Good video, I love a hefty amount of research.
Glad you enjoyed the video……but ugghhh, mired in next videos research right now. I feel like I’m taking the Bar Exam tomorrow.
I need the extraction claw for one of those, any tips of where I might find one? I have the exact same shotgun
I posted to your other comment but in case you’re looking here.....try Numrich and look under Kessler for the R and L side and the screw. They have it all. Hopefully that fits.
I just bought this gun from a neighbor of mine i was wondering if this would be a good home defense weapon?
It would be better than nothing…..but a bolt action shotgun wouldn’t be my first choice for self defense.
I thought the Westernfield Model 30 was the brand name of the Stevens 520A.
I bought a Westernfield 30 a few weeks ago, and it is a 520A. The bolt action shotgun I bought was a Glenfield 50, same as the Marlin 55.
There is some weird kind of thing going on right there. I saw that too during my research. Never really got to the bottom of it.
It’s not a Marlin. It’s a Kessler. If you do a Google search for western field model 30 pump, you get a 520, if you do a Google search for western field model 30 Bolt, you get the Kessler.
Ok! Didn't knew about the Kessler. But it's kinda weird naming two different shotguns with the same model name.
A local pawn shop got one in,first I’ve ever seen, same as the one in you vid. Except it was parkerized.greenish gray like ww2 weapons .
Interesting choice to add the parkerized finish.....maybe the bluing was shot. Thanks for tuning in.

I have to pattern that gun and see what’s going on. Would be good content.

If someone cut the barrel end off it is a cylinder choke now......

Just checked. Numrich might have it. Check under Kessler. They have both left and right. They have the screw too.
I Had a Mossberg 16 Gauge Bolt Action with a 2 Round Magazine That I Would Say Could Be a Competitor Too These Shotguns Too 😀😊😀
I have two bolt action 16 gauges now.....love em. Posting new videos of these offbeat shotguns all the time now.....new facination with them.
So, I got a bargain if I bought mine at a Gun Show for $20.00 sans stock ?
Depends on how much you pay for a stock!
I just got one of these but it says it's a model 288 in a pawn shop for $170
Can’t imagine what that is. 288?
@@MilsurpGarage it's almost identical to this one but with a detachable mag
Oh right, the 228FR…..I covered those in the video. That’s a Kessler.
Uhhh Ohhhh Another Rabbit Hole 😀😊😀
Rabbit WORMHOLE.......even better.
