  • This video shows a Milwaukee M18 Battery which has 2 defective cells,how to identify and replace them.
    If Your Milwaukee M18 batteries are not charging the first thing is to check voltage if it is in and around 18v the cells are probably OK but the PCB circuit board may be at fault. This tutorial gives you a relatively quick guide on how to repair your battery by replacing the faulty cells.The M18 Milwaukee batteries are very well made using high quality cells and with a very robust casing they can be expensive to buy so repair could be a good option. The cells are about £6 each the Circuit boards are less than £10. The batteries featured here are the 5.0ah red lithium 18v M18. The question is can you fix a Milwaukee battery?the answer is for the most part yes.Battery repair is not without its risks and careful consideration should be taken before attempting repairs such as the one featured.     you have to balance the cells, some of them are showing full voltage 4.2v, so the charger says charged, but there is cells in the pack that aren't at full power, so the lights only show voltage

    You’re not explaining the fact that the BMS has total control of these batteries swaps hence the reason you had to change the BMS. So if anyone were to get into this understand manufacturer control over these batteries and repair this same problem I have with replacing batteries in Apple phones, if you don’t swap the BMS you lose functionality and key failures that happen after the battery. So since the BMS cannot be swapped to the new battery pack, you cannot successfully repair these batteries due to the BMS programming. Would that be correct?

      I don't know everything but I think the boards deactivate the battery after a certain number of charges

    the new cells you put in need balancing so there all read the same voltage in the pack . also i found if you have 1 led flashing once done if you get a wire and do neg and to touch the terminal next to the negs the led goes off no leds light up.then put it in the power tool pull the trigger leds come back on and then it will charge

      The charger will balance the cells on their own.

      @@tylerseabook9423 not necessarily the charger arnt great at balancing i think some only monitor the voltages as the BMS is inside the battery itself ive had a few imbalanced batts to sort out as there wasnt charging on the charger throwing a fault.

      Some from ebay but they are expensive if you Google 18650 cell there are companies who sell them. I have been lucky to get some old donor batteries to harvest cells from. Some people buy a cheap make of battery to get cells this is also a cheap way of buying cells.

    Any chance you have a DeWalt or Flex power stack battery? Open that up and do a comparison video of the two technologies. Milwaukee's lithium vs power stack lithium.

      The powerstack tech is supposed to be the next step forward which is interesting.I think fixing them in the futurewill be a no go. As far as the tech goes between Milwaukee M18 and Dewalt 18v or 20v max the cells are the same and no difference in the quality of cells used ( 18650 ). However Milwaukees casings are far stronger the cells are more encased with rubber between the top and bottom
      Cells. Milwaukee high output and flexvolt use similar size and quality cells as each other too in most cases mostly 21700 cells the larger ones ( except 6amp Flexvolt which uses the 18650 just 15 instead of the 10 in the 20v max or 18v)

      @@doctorlefthandthread yea, that's what i want to see. How the power stack cells look and how they are arranged.
      Like, why does it mattered if they are stacked as opposed to side by side. Position doesn't really matter for wiring does it?

    I would have charged all of the sets of cells to the same voltage with a dc power source-good chance the charger didn’t like the battery because it was out of balance. And if it is a problem with the board-often that can be fixed with a good cleaning. I probably would have pulled the board off, cleaned it with alcohol and then let it dry all the way out while working on the pack.
    Another thing-not trying to be nit-picky, just a tip-lithium batteries don’t like being stored at full charge, if I buy cells-or if I reclaim cells from an old pack I usually bring them down to 3.7/3.8v for storage.

      What happens if you store them full charged? Got some 18650 that I haven't used in a while that may have been full charged before I quit using my vapes.

    Some cells can be saved even without voltage, but you need to charge them individually. This is somehow balancing.

      Not as bad as you think? Have you seen a single one of those explode. Not the whole pack but a single one can be extreme. If one blows up and sets the others off. Ya it is bad. Search 18650 explosion to see.

    In reality the cells that are at 3 or going to die soon, also batteries like to have the same voltage, especially in this series , the batteries you use do not have all the same voltage they will draw from the one that has more constantly, weakening that battery sometimes

    Good afternoon, hobbyists
    I would recommend everyone who repairs Li-ion batteries to make sure to use all the necessary protection. First and foremost, safety glasses nearby, temperature-resistant gloves or/and long blacksmith's pliers in case of "fireworks", a metal bucket filled with water. It is also important that the repair is not carried out on a metal surface (short circuit - high amperage), e.g. in the kitchen. In addition, there are no flammable liquids or other flammable materials near the work table. Before replacing defective Li-ion cells, make sure that they are completely discharged (I do this with a 36V/400W lamp). Another hidden danger, the voltmeter shows that the cell is empty, that there is no voltage and it is full or overcharged (cells with protection)? I check that additionally to be completely sure, at the positive pole (+) there are small passages and between them, with a narrow screwdriver, I try to press the safety membrane (mechanical switch) down and then measure the voltage again. Many new cells with high capacity and high currents do not have this protection. Each Li-ion cell has a label with the manufacturer's name and what type it is, and it is not difficult to read its characteristics (protected or not) via the Internet.

    They have a 5 year warranty take it in to get a new free battery.

      It's only 2 years where I live. The warranty on these things depend on where you are in the World

      Battery's are 2 yrs. Tool skins are 5 yr.

    Unbalanced batteries is your problem...the new cells have to be balanced with the old ones you didn't replace...imho

    You didn't try to charge the old cells .. they maybe still good. The most abnormal thing you did was that you '' Butchered'' the battery plastic, if you could have just placed some pressure the cells would have come out easily. Milwaukee batteries are repackable easily.

      Correct I have done some since and avoided having to butcher the plastic . You are probably right about the cells to. In my defense that was the first Milwaukee battery I ever opened

    Milwaukee have really poor quality batteries compared to bosch and dewalt. Neither of their batteries have let me down, however I've had 3 milwaukee battery packs fails on me. No way can they cope with the rigours of professional use. I'm going back to dewalt. Cheaper in price and better quality.

      The cells are the same for the most part Milwaukee and Dewalt use similar quality the Milwaukee and Makita boards give me more trouble than Dewalt but Milwaukee seems to be less water resistant than the rest.

    Welcome to planned obsolescence. The company doesn't want you to be able to repair your own stuff so there's probably a singular chip that once a fault is recognized in the battery it wont ever let it charge or run again.
