      Yeah... just because Nuclear war is intolerable, doesn't mean we should hang back and let nuclear powers move their tanks around freely... The strongest solution the west can do, while maintaining it's strategic aims (of not backing Putin into a corner), is to simply declare "war" on Ukraine and begin securing the west half of the country. Don't push against Russia, but don't give them an inch.

      The world bullies, such as Putin, know people don't want WW3, so they just keep attacking other nations knowing that people like you won't do anything because you are afraid of engagement. There is a time when you need to face your fears and fight the bullies, whether you wanna call it WW3 or not. Sooner or later it will have to be done.

    Anyone surprised? In all the Centuries before the Russian Revolution the peasants were were treated by the Czars as on a par with farm animals. After the Revolution in the "reign" of Stalin etc, the peasants were treated by the Communist Regime as a totally expendable commodity. In the post Communist period of Glasnost the peasants began to see their lot improve, then came the Oligarchs and Putin who made the US Civil war Carpetbaggers seem like Missionaries. Different Governments, same methodology.

      It's the old adage, "In with the new boss, same as the old boss". The only difference between Vladimir Putin and Ivan the Terrible (or any other Tsar/Boyar, etc) is 500 or so years of history. In terms of the personality type, they are the same. The same psychopathy, same methods, same delusions of grandeur, etc, etc, etc. I call Putin the "little Tsar", because it's apparent that he believes he's some sort of great historical figure. "Saviour" of Old Russia, restorer of past glories. In reality, he's just a pissant who has massive delusions of grandeur. Tsar, velikiy kniaz, boyar, indeed. He's more like the court jester or the serf forced to clean out the buckets they used to go to the toilet in.

People fleeing from the Middle East do not have the same culture and consequently bring turmoil, mostly because they insist on bringing their tumultuous culture with them. I think an implicit but potentially important consideration here is the possibility of Putin losing his absolute power and the threat of war crimes is a very real consideration. Putin seems to be surrounded by yes men, but those amoung them powerful enough to eventually face war crimes might start thinking carefully about their own future. In the short term it would be risky for them to stand up to Putin. In the long run it might be fatal for them not to. It's hard to know from the outside how this might playout, but we could imagine scenarios ranging from influencing Putin, staging a Russian coup d'état or even an assassination of Putin. I thought this was the point, but then no one mentioned anything like this explicitly.

      The Great Famine,in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 and killed millions of Ukrainians. It was a large part of the wider Soviet famine of 1932-1933. The term Holodomor emphasises the famine's man-made and allegedly intentional aspects such as rejection of outside aid, confiscation of all household foodstuffs and restriction of population movement. As part of the wider Soviet famine of 1932-1933 which affected the major grain-producing areas of the country, millions of inhabitants of Ukraine, the majority of whom were ethnic Ukrainians, died of starvation in a peacetime catastrophe unprecedented in the history of Ukraine. Since 2006, the Holodomor has been recognized by Ukraine and 15 other countries as a genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out by the Soviet government.

      A disagreement is not required to have a discussion. A debate is often a discussion with no plausible end point. Noam Chomsky once described the idea of "debating" as one of the human races most pointless creations. Essentially, it is more often than not, taking two staunch sides, neither of whom wish to change their view point, and you get these two sides to try to force their opinions onto the other, usually to no avail. When is the last time we have watched a serious debate, where one side says to the other "Actually, I never thought about it like that. Good point. I think I will now do a U-turn on the opinions I have presented to day, and instead take your points onboard". It rarely works like that. What is much more educational, is to have an open discussion like this, involving well credited, educated and experienced individuals, presenting to the people a set of factual information combined with their educated opinions, in the hopes that it brings some clarity to the outside population who are seeking more information on what is really going on within these complex situations.

    It's so frustrating that when the topic of stopping importing Russian gas and oil comes up, announcer Peter Craven's has the typical response to start humming and hawing about increased gas and oil prices. How can you put a price on the lives of the innocent civilians in the Ukraine? Jessica Berlin's response is the appropriate one, pressing that we should pay this financial price for freedom in Europe. Mikhail in Bonn emphasized that from the military perspective this is not a declaration of war. Frankly it's a more civilized way of fighting back. Otherwise we are feeding the Russian war machine. Jessica is correct about the urgency of the situation, we are facing WW3. We must act very carefully but very decisively. The trump sanctions card has not been played. American has set the example. 26 -- 27% of European oil and gas comes from Russa they claim (France 24 says 40% for natural gas and about 25% for oil). In any case that means Europe has a stronger hand to play here than USA. I pray that German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz and other European leaders have the courage to act boldly and wisely in solidarity with Ukraine and for world peace. Stop feeding the war machine! Ask every consumer to voluntarily cut back their consumption of oil and gas. STOP IMPORTING RUSSIAN GAS AND OIL!!!!!!!!

    Why do so many people assume this could easily escalate to a full-blown war? NATO would not attack targets in Russia. Russia does not have the means to threaten NATO countries. Given the losses in aircraft and tanks they had in two weeks against a far inferior opponent, engaging NATO would mean the fast and massive destruction of the Russian militry. And if that happens neither NATO nor Russia's neighbours will be afraid of the Russian armed forces any more. And that is the worst that can happen to Putin: Losing his position as a superpower and threat.
    And assuming Putin and his generals would call for the end of the world without a single bomb hitting Russian territory is just ridiculous. If NATO calls his bluff, then the war is over within hours.
    Stopping the imports of oil and gas would only be a problem for Germany if they last for 6+ months. What will Russia look like in six months? 50,000 dead soldiers, 1,000 destroyed tanks, hundreds of destroyed airplanes and helicopters? That is not a realistic scenario. Russia cannot keep up this controntation for that long. The earlier we stop the imports, that sooner they have to give up. And afterwards we will allow them to sell gas to us for half the price.

Either you assume that Putin and the people he needs are suicidal / completely insane or you do not assume that. If you do not assume that then NATO stopping Russian units in Ukraine will not lead to a large scale nuclear war.

    Ukraine is in a life and death fight against Russia, defending its right to decide it future. The future Ukraine had chosen, was to strengthen its fledgling democracy and joining as a EU member state. In 1994 Ukraine had voluntary stood down and dismantled its nuclear weapon capability; having had at that time, the third largest nuclear weapon arsenal in the world. Key Western powers including Russia, agreed to the Budapest Memorandum, to come to the Ukraines defence should it be faced with an attack on its sovereignty. Ukraine also signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). Therefore Ukraine's fight is about fighting for common principals all of the West hold sacred. Defeat of Ukraine would therefore spell the potential defeat of any number of EU or Nato member states. As if Western states are not prepared to uphold the Budapest Memorandum, then it become a serious question whether NATO agreement is watertight. On principal alone the West should be defending Ukraine; as Russia is attacking principals the West agrees are the foundation stones of Western democracy. The right to sovereignty, the right to self-determination, the right to decide who it trades with and who it associates with, the right to chose it security alliance, the right for its citizens to live in peace and security. Russia is challenging the Wests resolve on defending democracy. So far the West has failed to support its agreements at Budapest. If Ukraine falls, its would be due to Western failure to uphold commitments to defend democracy. We can no longer stand by and watch daily as thousands of Ukraines civilians are indiscriminately killed or displaced by brutal Russian aggression. It is time to step in and stop this bloody murder of innocent people due to Putin's egotistical reading of history. A history Putin wishes to shape according to his whims. We cannot look the other way. This war whether we like it or not will spill over. Contain it now, while the Southern flank is still relatively to a lessor degree impacted. At the very least seek a UN resolution to provide the necessary legal military intervention (air and missile interception defence) along Ukraines southern flank.

      Hey. You know what happened next in Afghanistan. It wants to be a primitive, backwater, extreme religionist country whose values do not coincide with ours. War is not medieval. War is of all ages and all times. War is part of the human condition. Europe, with enlightenment has begun (begun, not completed) to shed several downsides of that human condition. That process did not always go well.
      Look at how socialists tried to force equally and produced national-socialist Germany and the Soviet Union. And the exports of communism further afield. Millions of dead in China. Later on, trying to force western values on Iraq and such did not go as disastrously wrong as exporting communism, but on the whole it has not gone well. You cannot force values on other people. Ukrainians do not want Russian values forced upon them. Trading war for an oppression in the name of peace is not peace.
      We should have gone renewable ages ago. I've always tried to minimize my fossil fuel consumption, but not everyone agrees. Preventing climate change is the most important, but destroying the income of putrid and evil governments has always been a close second. Regarding nuclear war, the world normalizes the idea of having them when the non proliferation gets down to a number we can tolerate.
    To bastardize a quote from someone way more intelligent than I'll ever be; Given enough time the impossible becomes possible, the possible then becomes probable and the probable becomes an almost certainty if given enough time.
    This being said, a major nuclear power still has to be stood up to or each red line will be backed with the threat of nuclear retaliation. Each time this nuclear sabre is rattled it becomes more normalized. Putin saying this time and time again is liable to make him believe what he is saying about using his nuclear arsenal.
    This has to stop or we will face the same problem in the near future.

    I have been following U.S media and now also this American speaking lady, and I feel they are somehow exited to have all this action on European ground. In case of a major crises she will likely relocate to the U.S.
    Europe and Russia will be the biggest losers economically. U.S will be able to manage the energy deficit, Europe can not. Also U.S will be profiting hugely on selling all the weapons Europe now needs. And the majority of the pain in term of war and fighting will likely be contained in Europe and not spread to the U.S continent. At the same time Europe's and Russia's competitiveness will be hugely dented, making life easier in the U.S, supported by the FED's creation of currency out of thin air. U.S couldn't have wished and asked for more. Putin played the cards directly in their hand. China, India and Brazil will be the biggest winners, in that order. European/Russian trading ties, Nord Stream 2, etc., are in ruins and will remain so for likely decades or at least until Putin is longer alive. The sad thing is, that it has to be this way now, and I support it because Putin did what he did.

Start rationing petrol and natgas, encourage work from home, public transport, and only weekly deliveries (looking at you Amazon). Get creative with heat saving sleepovers and cooking larger communal meals. EU should create a robust system of managing natural gas within EU, in terms of distribution, transport and storage. This is a bit late in the game now, but it doesn’t mean we have to give up and postpone.
    Natural gas has to be seen not only as energy source (which is, in proportion) but also as industrial commodity (raw material), this should be clear even to countries that have electricity surplus, tout a fait.
    Enough storage should be built (near where it enters EU or in key distribution points).
    We’ve suppliers in the north (Norway, Russia*) and suppliers in the Mediterranean, what we need is a storage and a rail system to transport LNG between north and Mediterranean and vice-versa. This way if one supplier is not meeting its contracts, industry would not be impacted because options of alternative suppliers or storage from within EU. Creating wagons proper for secure LNG transport wouldn’t be difficult I think.
    Rail as transport because of relatively weather resilience. Security should be considered, where rails go densely populated areas alternative route should be found, or closely watched transit should be considered.
    * the fact that Russia is now a _personna non grata_ on trade right now doesn’t mean things can change in medium/long term, so, do not write it off.

    • @cykkm
      @cykkm 2 года назад +1

      You're totally right, if only a bit too late with the ideas (and that's the good news!). Check how many pipeline capacity and LNG terminals are in the EU. This is already quite an infrastructure. Also, natural gas is extracted even in Netherlands and France, albeit not a significant portion of the total consumed gas. The best of it all is a significant underutilization of France and, to a lesser degree, Belgium LNG terminals. Unfortunately, I do not know if pipelines are there to carry the extra capacity, but adding pipelines from Belgium to Germany over the North European Plain is going to be not far and likely less expensive than even building terminals; still 1-2 years horizon, unfortunately; perhaps closer to 1 (next winter is a concern) than 2 with a special financing, which is in the US best interest to provide to sell their gas to EU; we just burn it as a byproduct of oil extraction, adding to the CO2 footprint, otherwise. Germany is, unfortunately, is in the worst disposition right now: it has _not a single_ LNG terminal, and is the top gas consumer in EU. But with enough money and goodwill, solvable, if only barely. A war is a war.

    • @cykkm
      @cykkm 2 года назад +1

      Oh, and, BTW, rail transport of LNG is EU has its own problems, due to safety concerns. Trucking is much easier certifiable (but requires more of a better grade oil, unfortunately; most Russian crude does not qualify, rather fortunately).

The ground losses have been extreme, they’re stalled for a reason. We’re seeing increasingly likely satellite imagery evidence that the claims of over 1,000 Russian armored vehicles being destroyed is likely not an exaggeration.
      Military tactics are not a simple science. Russia has serious issues getting in range of anything but the suburbs of Kyiv. While thermobarics are effective at dislodging the resistance there, they don’t have anywhere near enough to effect more than 10% of Kyiv’s total territory. Not to mention it’ll kill hundreds of thousands and unify the world to bring extreme weaponry to the forefront, weaponry that Russia cannot counterbalance.
