Grand Funk Railroad - Black Licorice (excellent sound)

  • Grand Funk's 1974 performance of Black Licorice dubbed with a '75 audio recording from "Caught In The Act", so the sound quality is great compared to the original video floating around. It's amazing the video and audio are pretty much in sync throughout since I didn't do any other modification to either. This is some kick-butt rock & roll soul, so crank it up!!

Nobody rocked harder than Grand Funk. The thing is they just didn't play loud and hard for the sake of just making noise. There was purpose and thought behind how they attacked a song. Anyone can just play loud and hard. To do it and make it "musical" at the same time is a gift to all of us. Bravo!

Two kick ass K-Mart speakers in the back of a 1963 Dodge Dart with this song playing on the 8 track with volume up to bleed level. That’s how I rolled back then, and that’s why I can’t hear shit today. LOL.

Their music was soooo popular in the Detroit area and we use to blare them on the car speakers when we had field parties in Clarkston back in the early seventies! Great memories and proud of this band!

Hated the clothing, but this band is one of the great three piece bands in rock history (they did add Craig Frost on this tour I think for a fourth...not sure). You could tell when Craig wasn't there. It left a "hole", so to speak, & the guy really WAS a virtuoso, even back then.
(Listen to a decently-long version of "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home", both with Craig & without him, & it's immediately apparent that "something's missing" when the "flute" or "strings" part, (which is Craig playing on his Hammond , with the 'stops' set to make it sound like a flute or "strings", however he wanted to set it & have it sound like), IS there or when it's NOT there. You're the first person I've found who "gave credit where credit was due", as far as Craig Frost being present when they played a concert, & when he couldn't be there for various reasons.
I tip my hat to you, for noticing & giving C. Frost the credit he's so often not given. So many people hear the older versions playing when they visit me, or if we're travelling somewhere together & listening to those "original" tunes, it amazes me, (even though his name is on the "label-credits" as being a co-writer & performer.) Thanks for pointing that out to "the masses"; it means a lot to this old, "hippie-type" rocker. (I'd LOVE to hear to hear a "duet" with Mark Farner, Leslie West, Corky Laing, Mel or another good bassist, and a good percussionist, (NOT Donnie Brewer; I don't hold a grudge against anyone, but I listened to his "drum solo" ONCE, and that was more than enough for me).
(I'd started taking percussion lessons when I was 9, & "went pro" when I was 12, (and now I'm a very out-of-practice 62, but give me the pair of drumsticks which I preferred, that are STRAIGHT, & a week or two so I can get "back into it", and I'll play whatever you want to hear, with or without the percussion sheet-music), so I'm speaking from my own personal opinion & experiences on that subject.)
Again, Thank You for pointing out the fantastic keyboard-work of Craig Frost.

I remember when I first had the American Band LP 20 years ago, for some hazy reasons this song was the one I wanted to hear the least. Now, although I still love all the songs aboard, this is the tune that the most often comes to my mind. Sometimes the killer opening bassline, sometimes the stacccatos before and after the organ solo occurs to me and the whole song has enough energy to keep on playing in my head all day long.
