This is why you have to have a side kick. Hearing Ed McMahon laugh was as funny as the stuff Carson was saying and doing!!!
Two big kids! And friends.....
Let's try the FULL load
No late night talk show host, absolutely nobody, will ever top Carson. he was the best!!
I remember seeing this when it was first aired. I was crying and laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. Just like now. Thanks for posting this video.
Same here, I was about 16 then.
Ditto. I was 11.
Same here.
My mom and I saw it in an anniversary special, and my stepfather had already gone to bed so we were *trying* not to bust out laughing and ... well ....
My mother and I saw this on one of his anniversary shows in the early 80s -- my stepfather had gone to bed, and Mom and I were absolutely vapor-locked from trying not to laugh too loud. One of my fondest childhood memories of all, no joke.
Edit: I just expanded the reply thread and saw that I'd already told you this story ten months ago. Hahahaha!
This is hilarious. One could watch this over and over again and never get bored. Mr. Carson was and forever will be a tv great.
back in them days TV didn't have no eye protective sissy glasses!
Classic Johnny!
Ed’s laugh is gold.
I've been telling friends about this episode and now I've found it. I remember watching and laughing until I cried! There will NEVER EVER be another Johnny! RIP.
I recall seeing this in the old anniversary shows. Priceless!
This was a time when television was actually entertaining.

And yet you invested not only the time to watch the clip but also post a presumptuous comment about my "existence".
My point, was that it's refreshing to watch these segments from late night talk shows of yesteryear which were a stark contrast to the ones today where the main theme is to continue the same four-year long (and continuing) temper tantrum about political figures.
@@StephenKershaw1
THAT was your comeback?
I'm disappointed.
And toy safety was an afterthought.
@@StephenKershaw1 hmmm your lame and Idiot tv back then was awesome
@@hamiltonburger4574 I couldn't agree more. Nothing this entertaining on late night now. Loooooove Johnny 🤣❤🤣
"Couldn't sink any baskets huh?" Gotta love it!!!!
That was the funniest part. 🤣😂😄🤣
@@richardyoung9024 That was the end of Super Jock..lol
You're Fired!!!
Next to Caron doing Carnac..when he said "Sis Boom Bah".."describe the sound made when a sheep explodes"..this was one of his funniest moments.
Kim Jong-un must've been watching this. . .
Wow that cannon was a toy?! LOL I am an Adult and I would love to have that!
The 70s
I had a plastic one that size.
It's a "toy" in the sense that it only fires dummy loads, you can't load projectiles in it (although I'm some have tried). Johnny's right, they're used for starting races and end-of-game kind of stuff. Louder than a starter pistol

I was born in 1976 and remember these! My best friend had one!
Life was fun back then!
Johnny always brought us much needed laughter.
"Get your hand off my lanyard!"
LOL!
netsurferx1 I’ve never touched your lanyard!

Missing the aftermath - the thing was in pieces, and I think Doc played TAPS on his trumpet.
And weren't all the springs and everything sticking out?
YOU'RE RIGHT!!
I was waiting for that part of the video to play as well.
Aside from having to do ALPO Dog Food commercials, Ed McMahon had the best damn job in the world; get paid to laugh your ass off, meet legends damn near every day, screw around with Johnny, stare at Carol Wayne, stump Doc and the band - it just can't be any better.
I watched this when it first aired. Still hysterically funny. It's great how Johnny and Ed are like kids.
Carson is the only one who can make palying with toys this entertaining
I remember watching this on live TV, and I couldn't stop laughing after Johnny shot the basketball player!! 😀
I miss Carson. The funniest and greatest late night host of all time. This is hilarious!
Real humor. No cursing, making fun of other people or dirty jokes. Takes talent which is in short supply these days.
I love the fact how to purposefully fired the the half load then played it off as an accident. Genius!! :)
Carson was an inspiration to all of us in broadcasting.
He will forever be the King of late night!
I remember seeing that when I was about 12 or 13. It’s even funnier now.
We have not had a show that entertaining in the last 20 years or more.
It's 2021, and I still WANT THAT TOY!!!
I remembered seeing this the night it aired. Funny then. Funny now.
Johnny and Ed. What a team!!
We survived being a pre-teen in the 70's with trial, error and injury. When we got hurt, it was "don't tell mom, she'll take it away." These days, kids play Lego on an app.
There were lots of toys called Johnny something in the 60's. Rifles , lugar's, cars etcetera. Great xmas gifts
Still the gold standard for late night.
I remember watching this and laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.
Carson was one of TVs best-ever improvisers- as this clip shows. He made things even funnier when the planned material didn't work.
I saw this live and rolled on the floor laughing! Thanks for posting!
Label: Boys Cannon - Warning: May cause harm to sisters toys.
WHAT?
@@videolabguy You don't think boys would start shooting their sisters barbie doll's, houses, cars, etc ?
@@jonldavis 🤣👍
They cut the part where the toy was blown in half. Omg lmao....
AFTER the half load firing...
Ed: "Let's try the full load."
Johnny: "I have an idea (grabs plastic basketball player)."
Men all across America: Immediately put down their beer and press the record button on their VCR's.
These two grown up boys will ALWAYS be the very best!
Wouldn't sink any BASKETS, HUH???
Except this was before VCRs. They just checked for the RUclips clip later on their iPhones. 🤔
@@ZefTillDeath8878 Not really Betamax VCR's were already in stores by 1975.
Johnny’s reaction at 1:15 is why he was the best.
There will never be another Johnny Carson. I grew up with the tonight show. First with Jack Parr, then Johnny. Best entertainment ever
I remember Steve Allen before Jack Parr.
@@murraymall5116 ha Haha Haha Haha!! You are even older than me!!!! Lol. Great times, sir!!!!
Classic Carson never a dull moment👍👍
I always loved seeing the new christmas toy products the show.
Classic Carson comedy. I always wanted that cannon.
I was a senior in High School, I remember this, my Uncle and I were watching late night television when this show came on, my uncle didn’t laugh much when watching television, but he laughed when this was played! Thanks for the video memories!
Wouldn't sink any baskets huh, POW! I loved Carson.
One of the greatest clips of the Carson show of all time!
I remember this bit! The plastic foul shooter's head wound up half way towards Freddy De Cordova!!
I remember seeing this when it aired originally.. Wouldn’t sink any baskets huh?.
So happy to see this clip I was about 16when I saw this I would stay up late to watch the Tonite show I laughed for about 10 minutes remembering this episode brings back a good memberie johnny was and still the best
God, I miss these guys!!!!! This is classic!
OMG!! First time I saw this years ago, I laughed so hard my sides and cheeks hurt! Same reaction today! This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen! :-) God bless 'em; this was back when TV comedy was actually GOOD, kids - believe it or not!
When I was a kid growing up in the 60's I had a carbide cannon, it had a little scoop in the end piece you put some carbide powder, then you inserted it and turned it dumping the carbide in a water reservoir producing the gas then you hit the flint sparked and BOOM! It made one hell of a noise but you couldn't shoot anything with it. Of course, for kids, it was all about the big noise.
"So you couldn't shoot any basket huh,?" Bang ! You dead ! Way funniest thing I've ever heard !
That tie. Holy mackerel 😂
Hilarious, and who says there’s no aggression in comedy? I even hear it in Johnny and Ed’s bickering.
And I’m reminded, too, that the conflicts between Laurel and Hardy were really the backbone of their comedy.
In Ireland in 1974 their Irish TV version of Johnny's show called The Late Late Show with Gay Byrne started a regular look at toys each December for Christmas. This small routine became the annual "Toy Show" extravaganza which has been on air annually since 1975
I remember watching that show that night. Awesome !
I saw that back in the night it originally broadcast. I nearly died laughing.
I remember this like it was yesterday! LoL
Actual humor on the late night show some thing that is missing these days
I miss old television
The little boy in all of us old guys were saying "FULL LOAD, FULL LOAD".
Left out the best part where they pick up the basketball player with its head separated from the body....Ed and Johnny laughing...🤣
Such great toys, that cannon is so cool. It would work great for stop motion films with 1/6 scale figures.
BWAHAHAHAHA!!! That was too funny - no one had quicker wit than Johnny!
Saw this when it first aired, the head flew way across the stage.
At this time we had 16 more years with Johnny left.
I was an 11 year old kid who got to stay up and watch this! Not sure why, Dec 9th 1976 was a Thursday night..
The saying is so true...
Some boys will never grow up
🤣😂🤣
I remember watching this when I was in college(yes, I'm that old). I was laughing myself silly, and so was my roommate and a couple of girls we had over.
R.I.P. Mr. Johnny Carson.
October 23, 1925 -
January 23, 2005
I totally remember this ! I was watching this as it happened! I think this was the funniest Tonight Show bit ever.
I love all the old toys back in the days! Boys toys are really men toys!
This reminds me of the carbide cannon my older brother had purchased from Edmund Scientific catalog back in the early 60’s (lots of really cool stuff).
So funny!!!! These late night hosts nowadays wouldn’t be a pimple on Johnny’s butt. He was the greatest ever!
Hilarious 😆 I was 2 months old when this was filmed, too young for the cannon I guess
i'm from hamden, ct. and i remember that store and actually bought items there. no longer in business
I want one of those cannons
The Johnny Carson show was one of the best shows ever
Not one of the pest, THE VERY BEST!!!!!
That's BEST!!
DAMN AUTOCORRECT I WISH I COULD TURN THAT DAMN THING OFF!!!
I was probably about 7 at the time, but I remember seeing this when it aired.
Perfect!
I miss the good old days
I miss Johnny.
You'll shoot your eye out kid. Back in them days we grew up playing with real toys. Now a days, Santa won't even bring you a nerf gun.
how many kids immediately wanted it! lol
The absolute best of Johnny.
Cut off too soon. The payoff was they found the little man on the floor with his head cut off!
Dennis Daniels I remember seeing a clip of this including that....
Forgot That Part....
That was hysterical
Priceless!😁
I had one of these canon's and pardon the pun it was a blast....Johnny Carson was a class act...i saw that Micky Mouse phone but I went balls out and bought the Snoopy Phone... Snoopy was as cool as hell
Remember when first aired -- A CLASSIC !! BOOM GOES THE BASKETBALL PLAYER !!!
The GOAT
Love it. This was very familiar. I can't say I fully recall watching it when it aired but I seldom missed Carson & this really rang a bell in my brain.
I liked Jay too but nobody does it quite like Carson could.
'Wouldn't sink any baskets, huh?....Kablooey!.....Bwahahaha
I remember this one when it aired, sure miss Mr. Carson.
Sitting in my office, all alone, laughing like an idiot!
Laughed so hard.
My absolute favorite JC clip!
I had one of those basket ball dudes...they needed to move it farther back. I had the basketball one..the football one (kicked field goals) and baseball one. Those things were fun! I was around 7 and 8 yrs old (1977/78)
Look at that neck tie!
That was awesome but I wish they would have continued to show and see what happened to the little basketball guy
I saw this live the first time. Funniest thing I ever saw on TV I think. I seem to remember Doc playing TAPS before the shot was fired... must be thinking of something else. I also remember Lake Carson hosting a "Liberian Tanker" which had been in the news, and something started smoking. I remember a burning wastebasket and Ed pouring his Budweiser on it. I think I probably had consumed a few Budweisers myself and that's why my memory is faulty.
A loaded cannon. Kids got the cool toys back then.
My favorite momet of all.
I sure miss Johnny and Ed..Those were the days of great talk shows..
