    She was delightfully easy & natural when i met her at the Met many years ago, just like here. Thanks for posting. She is such a lady, for all that.

    I heard Gwyneth sing Lady Macbeth in Cardiff & Tosca At the ROH. A fine perfomance each time. She also gave us a fine concert at Pontypool. We are very proud of her achievements in the world of Opera. Henry Webb Pontypool Wales

    I met her backstage with my wife after a Turandot performance. Absolutely lovely person who made her fans feel special. She was very soft-spoken, and was far smaller than she appeared onstage, or by the size of her colossal voice! My wife said, 'Is she the same person who just obliterated the entire orchestra and chorus?!'

    Danke !

      Dianaemanuel Fortunately, even tho’ I’m American, I have a good ear, notions of grammar & experience w several languages, including German, so I understand a good part of this. And thank God, as all the Da Capo interviews are informative, entertaining & sometimes v moving.

      I can understand perhaps one of every five words, so I can put it together in my head and decipher the conversation. I’m certainly not fluent in German, but I can understand the gist of the discussion.

      All serious opera fans should have a working knowledge of German. All the most valuable books on opera, that go into the subject in great detail, are in German, and very few of them have been translated. Any fan who has not achieved at least the ability to read German is cheating himself out of 90 to 95 percent of the worthwhile literature that's been written on opera.

      Not quite, but very good. She speaks fluently, but her grammar is not flawless. She doesn´t always end her adjectives in en in the dative/accusative case for example. Her sentence structure is often too English. Nevertheless, I congratulate her on the level she has achieved.

    Eine wunderbare und feine Frau. Leider war ihre schöne Stimme bald verbraucht. Ein Riesenwobbel machte einen schwindlig. Aber sie sang eisern weiter.
    Everding hat freundlicherweise die guten Ausschnitte gebracht.

      James King told me once he was very irritated that she ruined his 'Lohengrin' recording with the wobble. On stage her theatrical art won the day, but her recordings are almost unlistenable.

      Ransom Coates Oh, I don’t agree! She gave many fine vocal performances: the Verdi album, the Luonnotar of Sibelius, Elijah of Mendelssohn, the Marschallin in Rosenkavalier, Elisabeth in Tannhauser. It was the heroic roles where she tended to scream for volume, and the wobble ensued.

    How lovely that the English auto translation isn’t functional, and that the title of this interview misleads viewers into thinking the interview will be conducted in English, because it’s not “auf Deutsche”! Yes, I’m being sarcastic. I can understand enough to get the gist of the interview, but it’s not important enough to make it worth my while.

    I have always had problems understanding her German when she was singing. Therefore I am surprised that her spoken German isn't bad at all.

    • @wotan10950

      12axing I think she overemphasized every syllable to the point where it sounded like she was reading from the dictionary. But she always gave 100% commitment and often sang beautifully. And she's certainly fluent in the language.

      @@jasonhurd4379 it's not uncommon for German soprano to be unclear. I have far less bother with mezzo and contraltos. Very few singers are as clear as Brigitta Fassbaender. I find French contralto Nathalie Stutzmann's Deutsch easy to follow.

      @ftumschk 4 года назад

      @@jasonhurd4379 I always thought that the sung German of (e.g.) Margaret Price, Geraint Evans and Robert Tear was very clear, even if the latter two had less idiomatic German than the more practised Price. In more recent times, Bryn Terfel's German is, to my ears, very well enunciated, whether he's singing Wagner or Lieder. Maybe Gwyneth Jones is the exception rather than the rule?
