These guys are my favorite of the Devils, I made a Tiefling Fighter whose father was a Gelugon, the DM let me use blue skin and Antennae instead of horns, and Character was always passed off as a half-fae instead of devil. The backstory was the Gelugon stuck around and raised my character to fight with spears, the reasons for sticking around was to be used at the DM's discretion. My character was never outcast or shunned because I could pass off as Fae. Probably one of my favorite characters I've ever created.
That moment where the ice devil shows you it's sculpture reminds me of the bit in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy where the Vogon captain gives Arthur and Ford a chance to admire his poetry.

Or maybe not a team-up, but a semi-friendly art collection rivalry perhaps.... There was a pretty funny Gorgon character with a fantastic art collection in WebDM's Land Between Two Rivers campaign, and that whole thing has stuck in my mind as a classic ever since.
Any situation where a group of powerful enemies can create nigh impassible barriers of ice on command is gonna be a problem. The situation would be increasingly worse if they boxed you in with ice walls, then introduced ice-themed creatures to supplement their frozen ambush. A advanced Gelugon leader with a bag of holding containing a few Snowflake Oozes could make any encounter 10 times harder. Or perhaps they ride in on a pack of half-devil Winter Wolves. Frost Giants move over, there's a new frozen terror out there.
I kinda like that The Ice Devil looks so insect like. So little insects do well in low temperatures that the contrast is more alien - "Research prisons" is never a good combination of words😅 - 23:16 Is this stuff done magically or do evil entities search mountains for hundreds of years till they find the perfect place? My monk/evil scientist mage artificially made dark elf, which usually gets bullied by the party and surface worlders but has his charm and wits yet to keep them at bay suddenly finds himself at the mercy of an ice devil. The rest of the party (save for a few), while being horrified and stunned, are at a loss for words. But the drow, who is used to abominations being his drow heritage and his ghastly hobbies, smiles delightfully at the ice devils frigid tower of horrors, and laughs and has a merry time describing the tower and sharing ideas with the ice devil, so much that the ice devil, seeing his demented nature, let's the drow go to enjoy the good time more with him. He gives an absolute shit eating grin to the rest of the party, giving the most "see how it feels" vibe ever, and goes on his merry way. Of course he eventually strikes a deal with the ice devil, trading his party for a bunch of cultist that so happened to be the enemies of the party, but after that incident and revenge Wrought, the rest of the party started holding a begrudging respect for the demented drow and his cunning ways of spreading his sadistic, although laden with good intentions somewhat, machinations.
Cania and Gelugons are both so cool. Pitiless in the extreme, and with good reason. 9 tours of 777 years each, and one foul up spoils your chances for promotion. The mind reels at severe demands for excellence such as those.
This is actually an exaggeration of a real life technique used by authoritarian regimes. They deliberately set an impossible standard that they know no one can live up to, and then when it comes time to promote an official they will tell them "look, we know you screwed up here here and here, but hey! We like you! We'll give you the job even though your technically not qualified. Just do this favor for us under the table." The official then goes into his new job feeling like an imposter and knowing that he cut a dirty deal to get in. He will be slavishly loyal to the ones who promoted him because he knows they can expose him as not being qualified at any time. That you don't live up to the standard that they say is required for the job becomes their hold over you, when in reality that is the only kind of person who is ever even considered for that position. An officer who actually lived up to the requirements would never be selected because the one who promoted him would not have anything to hold over his head. Similarly here I suspect that none of the Ice devil's who are promoted have a perfect record, and in fact having a perfect record would mean you would never be promoted. That would mean a perfect boy scout in a position of power that they now have to complete with, and they have no hold over. If he's so good at being an ice devil, let him stay there and continue to slave away for eternity as a genuinely valuable subordinate. And this is just aside from the fact that the nature of competion and the cutthroat nature of the Hells probably makes having a record like the one describe simply impossible.
Using 2 Ice Devil's in my upcoming campaign. 1 on mission to Prime Material for Mephistopheles (he's found a way off plane permanently, it's his time rebel) & another as a spy for Asmodeus. Not sure if the players will actually encounter these two but if they do they're ready. Great video as always AJ , always loved Gelugons my favorite devils, really enjoyed this many thanks.
Wow, in all my research I've never heard of that magic giving off UV light thing! What a great idea, I love that! Hmmm... Would more powerful magic perhaps give off x-rays or maybe even gamma rays at spell level 10+?
That reference is from 1st edition if I remember correctly. A bit like an aura of invisible light unless you have the ability to Detect Magic. The more powerful, the more brightly and further is shines.

A devil snarling and cursing you in infernal is terrifying, but a devil calmly asking you to join it for dinner to discuss your unconditional surrender is even more so. Also, I'm *totally* using that extradimensional loophole to great effect >:D I'll tell my players that AJ sends his regards!

I think the idea is they are perfectionists. So whatever hobby they indulge in their downtime is persued with obsessive devotion. Thus the only weakness you can make use of. That you can use their pretension at this past time to stroke their egos for your benefit.
Also it's a devil, not demon, but i realize that's just being a nitpicker ;). I'm just as excited about that particular aspect of these crazy devil-army cold-slinging demon-terminators. :D
The effect on the spear isnt "half-assed" it's the same effect as a slow spell. Like the extreme cold is making it hard to move. You can make it more punishing by stunning them yes, but a slow effect is pretty harsh as well.
could see a horned devil and a ice devil complaining about the temperatures on the 8th layer one saying its too cold the other its to warm with the ice devil saying this is a plane of ice and point out how their is puddles everywhere which is unnatural
I would not be surprised to find one of these things trying to upgrade by using the features of the powerful Umberhulk. Yes. Ice, tunnels, flying, memory tampering, fear and more. Now that I say this, I think I'll go get my great shotel so I can bisect the gisnt insect easier.
The art at 18:33 is the cover art from a series wherein Mephistopheles makes an appearance or two. In fact, the main party includes a Tiefling son of his, whom he refers to as “no more than the happenstance of my spraying seed”. They travel, being the Chosen of Mask, to Cania (?) to bargain with Ol Mephistopheles himself. There are ice devils spoken of as being visible in the distance. It left quite an impression off one reading 15+ yrs ago…
Wall of ice is hilarious and I'm glad they let Ice Devils keep it. Why not surround Malsheen with a labyrinth of Walls of Ice? You've got enough Ice Devils capable of casting it.
I would love to upgrades models with led eyes I could probably fit a watch battery in base to make the eyes glow. Paint the battle board with Vanta Black Paint and have terrain with UV Ruins that only become visible when the Ice Devils eyes shine upon it.

I LOVE the tidbit about what it takes to actually be promoted to this level. The 777 years of flawless service and all that. Do we know specifically what is required to be promoted to other levels?
I would suspect that this is an impossible standard set up so that Ice Devil's who are promoted owe under the table favors to whoever pushed their promotion through. This is an age old authoritarian management technique. The Ice Devil's who actually fullfil the requirements, or come close, are patted on the back and told that someone else with a better service record beat them to the job, so sorry, better luck next year! While Ice Devil's who are competent enough to do the job, but have major screw ups on their record are quietly taken aside and told that they can be moved to the top of the list for promotion, but only if they do X Y and Z personal favors for their sponsor once they in. This puts the newly promoted Devil in a state of insecurity, where he will continuously try to compensate for the screw ups on his record by being extra vigilant, but also lives in fear of ever displeasing the superior who promoted him, as they can expose their past incompetence and have them demoted at any time. That's how you form bonds of loyalty in a lawful evil beurocracy.

If I do end up using Ice Devils I would change the magical ice walls to something more akin to Dry Ice that evaporates with heat and burns to the touch... it also displaces oxygen in confined spaces so don't get caught in a hollow sphere of the stuff.
Yah, i think one could also imagine socio-cultural groups like the F.R. Drow using little bits of magic in the paint used to decorate their Underdark cities & structures as methods of lighting and navigating in addition to the other practicalities & aesthetic functions.
I like the thread we had on /TG about monster flavoring that had Gelugons using weapons and armor made of super chilled mercury. An incredibly dense, tough metal when frozen that can be described to make players think its mithril but is actually unusable by players as it simply melts away to a puddle of useless, toxic liquid. Also, I love the idea of their insectoid faces each being subtly unique and identifying like Mandalorian helmets, definitely using that.
Do you suppose the city in the ice could be a spellweaver city and the angels Frozen in the ice were trying to stop them from activating their weapon to reset reality?
I bet the next ice devil my character meets is going to appreciate the puns i use, unless they just give me a cold shoulder. But, I’ll try to keep things chill. Now i do have a thing to say about Ultravision. Last time I checked, in the forgotten realms setting Ultravision meant that the vision was based on starlight reflecting off the surface of things. Creatures with this saw the world as if in “constant twilight” unless they go in doors or underground where the Ultravision fails due to the lack of starlight. I’d like to know what you make of this conflicting information, maybe there is a portfolio of vision supplement book.
The design on these guys has always been a little silly to me. Last I checked, bugs and cold don't mix. Maybe you explain it in the video. I'm excited to watch.
Long time viewer first time commenter. I don't really play d&d tabletop, but I really love all the lore of d&d. I do have a question though. The origin of asmodeus is pretty nebulous. The fallen angel origin is pretty common knowledge. However, I saw a video on MrRexx about his origin as part of the ouroboros, along the god of the quatuals(forgive my spelling) that created the universe. Which do you consider his canon origin?
For what its worth I don't think there is a canon origin. The world of D&D is ancient beyond mortal reckoning and has been through multiple reshuffles caused by various Powers interfering with the flow of time and other fundamental forces of the multiverse. Canon is whatever you want it to be.
Both are equally valid, Asmodeus is a god, he exists in more than one reality simultaneously, so he is both a fallen angel, and a cosmic primordial serpent at the same time.

Hearing about the horrors trapped within the ice along with the celestial beings who fought them, I have to wonder. Could this be a source for a long lost aspect of Obox-Ob? Trapped, but too dangerous to risk it escaping during an attempt to destroy it?
There's a devil named Bune in my games that keeps appearing with different parties, my players know her but the characters are different every time, she's gone from spine devil up to barbed devil by swindling my them out of magical artifacts and soul coins at every turn, this time in ice wind Dale she is going to offer people in ten towns an immunity to cold in exchange for unborn childrens souls, but won't mention that they won't be. Able to leave cold and even being near fire or warmth hurts them severely
Great video, as always, although with a small caveat: when you describe the numbing effects of the Gelugon's cold, heat-sapping attacks as a 'weird, half-assed... version of stunned', I believe you may have missed the point, which is a SLOWING effect, explaining the close resemblance with said spell aside from the -2 penalty to AC and Dexterity saving throws and reduction of speed being a flat -10 feet rather than half movement, for some reason. Always has been *cocks space handgun*

Made a longsword out of a central steel spike inserted into an ice shard from the 8th layer, surrounded by glass steel (and some other sweet enchantments). Ironically there are quite a few devils and other critters in the outerplanes that react very badly to ice:-)
These are my favorite creatures to use. Even dragons aren't nearly as fun, or as effective to put the fear of god in them. I'm about the one them against my lv3 party as a boss man commander for more level-appropriate devils (No, it will take part in the fight, unless the party is stupid enough to actually attack it.

Group of ice devils will create ice walls in tandem, forcing pcs into dead ends, encapsulation and crushing them in the process.

I have the honor of owning a D&D 1e Monster Manual, and the Ice Devil entry was one of those that stuck with me the most.

The Ice Devil powers of cold are also extremely useful when they work with Yugoloth. Loths are particularly vulnerable to cold.

actually I think that was supposed to be just a personal quirk of _that particualr_ devil.
I think the idea is they are perfectionists. So whatever hobby they indulge in their downtime is persued with obsessive devotion. Thus the only weakness you can make use of. That you can use their pretension at this past time to stroke their egos for your benefit.
Also it's a devil, not demon, but i realize that's just being a nitpicker ;). I'm just as excited about that particular aspect of these crazy devil-army cold-slinging demon-terminators. :D

The effect on the spear isnt "half-assed" it's the same effect as a slow spell. Like the extreme cold is making it hard to move. You can make it more punishing by stunning them yes, but a slow effect is pretty harsh as well.

could see a horned devil and a ice devil complaining about the temperatures on the 8th layer one saying its too cold the other its to warm with the ice devil saying this is a plane of ice and point out how their is puddles everywhere which is unnatural

The art at 18:33 is the cover art from a series wherein Mephistopheles makes an appearance or two. In fact, the main party includes a Tiefling son of his, whom he refers to as “no more than the happenstance of my spraying seed”. They travel, being the Chosen of Mask, to Cania (?) to bargain with Ol Mephistopheles himself. There are ice devils spoken of as being visible in the distance. It left quite an impression off one reading 15+ yrs ago…

I LOVE the tidbit about what it takes to actually be promoted to this level. The 777 years of flawless service and all that. Do we know specifically what is required to be promoted to other levels?
I would suspect that this is an impossible standard set up so that Ice Devil's who are promoted owe under the table favors to whoever pushed their promotion through.
This is an age old authoritarian management technique. The Ice Devil's who actually fullfil the requirements, or come close, are patted on the back and told that someone else with a better service record beat them to the job, so sorry, better luck next year! While Ice Devil's who are competent enough to do the job, but have major screw ups on their record are quietly taken aside and told that they can be moved to the top of the list for promotion, but only if they do X Y and Z personal favors for their sponsor once they in.
This puts the newly promoted Devil in a state of insecurity, where he will continuously try to compensate for the screw ups on his record by being extra vigilant, but also lives in fear of ever displeasing the superior who promoted him, as they can expose their past incompetence and have them demoted at any time.
That's how you form bonds of loyalty in a lawful evil beurocracy.

I'd like to know more about the process of promotion for each of the devils, whether that be something they do to get promoted or the procedure
basically they must be promoted by a stronger devil, usually for power derived from mortal souls accrued.

If I do end up using Ice Devils I would change the magical ice walls to something more akin to Dry Ice that evaporates with heat and burns to the touch... it also displaces oxygen in confined spaces so don't get caught in a hollow sphere of the stuff.

Yah, i think one could also imagine socio-cultural groups like the F.R. Drow using little bits of magic in the paint used to decorate their Underdark cities & structures as methods of lighting and navigating in addition to the other practicalities & aesthetic functions.
I like the thread we had on /TG about monster flavoring that had Gelugons using weapons and armor made of super chilled mercury. An incredibly dense, tough metal when frozen that can be described to make players think its mithril but is actually unusable by players as it simply melts away to a puddle of useless, toxic liquid. Also, I love the idea of their insectoid faces each being subtly unique and identifying like Mandalorian helmets, definitely using that.
Do you suppose the city in the ice could be a spellweaver city and the angels Frozen in the ice were trying to stop them from activating their weapon to reset reality?

I bet the next ice devil my character meets is going to appreciate the puns i use, unless they just give me a cold shoulder. But, I’ll try to keep things chill. Now i do have a thing to say about Ultravision. Last time I checked, in the forgotten realms setting Ultravision meant that the vision was based on starlight reflecting off the surface of things. Creatures with this saw the world as if in “constant twilight” unless they go in doors or underground where the Ultravision fails due to the lack of starlight. I’d like to know what you make of this conflicting information, maybe there is a portfolio of vision supplement book.
The design on these guys has always been a little silly to me. Last I checked, bugs and cold don't mix. Maybe you explain it in the video. I'm excited to watch.

The origin of asmodeus is pretty nebulous. The fallen angel origin is pretty common knowledge. However, I saw a video on MrRexx about his origin as part of the ouroboros, along the god of the quatuals(forgive my spelling) that created the universe. Which do you consider his canon origin?
For what its worth I don't think there is a canon origin. The world of D&D is ancient beyond mortal reckoning and has been through multiple reshuffles caused by various Powers interfering with the flow of time and other fundamental forces of the multiverse. Canon is whatever you want it to be.
Both are equally valid, Asmodeus is a god, he exists in more than one reality simultaneously, so he is both a fallen angel, and a cosmic primordial serpent at the same time.

There's a devil named Bune in my games that keeps appearing with different parties, my players know her but the characters are different every time, she's gone from spine devil up to barbed devil by swindling my them out of magical artifacts and soul coins at every turn, this time in ice wind Dale she is going to offer people in ten towns an immunity to cold in exchange for unborn childrens souls, but won't mention that they won't be. Able to leave cold and even being near fire or warmth hurts them severely

Great video, as always, although with a small caveat: when you describe the numbing effects of the Gelugon's cold, heat-sapping attacks as a 'weird, half-assed... version of stunned', I believe you may have missed the point, which is a SLOWING effect, explaining the close resemblance with said spell aside from the -2 penalty to AC and Dexterity saving throws and reduction of speed being a flat -10 feet rather than half movement, for some reason.

Made a longsword out of a central steel spike inserted into an ice shard from the 8th layer, surrounded by glass steel (and some other sweet enchantments). Ironically there are quite a few devils and other critters in the outerplanes that react very badly to ice:-)

They're not a cake walk in 5e if they're properly used, but damn 1e has some wild stuff
1e was a very different game from 5e in many ways. Savings throws and magical resistance were often brutal.
Rare parties ever reached a level to face dragons much less demons...more 1st and 2nd edition were killed by orcs and kobolds than dragons and demons

These are my favorite creatures to use. Even dragons aren't nearly as fun, or as effective to put the fear of god in them. I'm about the one them against my lv3 party as a boss man commander for more level-appropriate devils (No, it will take part in the fight, unless the party is stupid enough to actually attack it.
