This is so great... The way he explained the reasoning behind the body of work included in 'City of Shadows' one can see that it is really a long process ... And its connection with Shostakovic's musical piece was sublime... what a great artist. Thanks for making this.
Thank you to all those that contributed and thank you Ted. This is truly a gift that should not be taken for granted. As a passionate photographer "inspiration" is truly a blessing and seeing and hearing another artists' process, especially as genuine and moving as Alexey Titarenko is a rare treat.
2 STANDING OVATIONS!! ALEXEY'S ability to pull the emotion from his heart then thru the eye of his lens, & turn it into an emotional photo is ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL! In today's world of instant gratification this is a photographer who has an incredible amount of patience. Not only in creating his shots but also in the darkroom. I applaud him profusely for the countless hours he has spent in creating beautiful works of art! TED you have brought us a young old school photographer, you rise to the occasion repeatedly! The combination of a Russian photographer & Russian composer further brought me into Alexey's work, I felt like I was walking on those streets. The transition from scene to scene was flawless. The voices were crisp & clear with just enough music. This is by far one of my favorite ARTIST SERIES videos you have compiled because I feel you really captured the soul of the artist. Thank you to you and your team for all your hard work & the time you put into these videos.
Ted, there is nothing that I can say which has not already been said. You are doing important work. Through your blood, sweat, and tears you are educating many, many people. Thanks for doing what you do.
One of my favorite photographers. Thanks for featuring his work. Having a small insight into what these photographers think and do is so valuable -- nothing else compares. Thanks, Ted. I can't wait for the next short film.
Ted, thank you so much for film about Alexey and his outstanding work. One of moments ,when you understand how small and amazing the world is. I was lucky to get to know about analogue process and print photographs in darkroom Alexey used to work during some time, in St.Petersburg.It was at one of the student campus, place had a good spirit- we worked with friends and were meeting another students, interested in analogue photography. Recall how we were discussing his works and wondering where Titarenko is now and what he is focused on. Once we found some test prints, later on my friend had chance to meet Alexey during one of photographer's short visit back in St.Pete. City still is both poetic and really darkside at same time. Some years later, I met my another friend's friend ,who moved to Germany, she turned out to take classes of photography in same group with Alexey. World sometimes is size of match box.
Amazing first episode of the Artist Series.... Alexey Titarenko is one of my favourite photographers... eagerly waiting for the next episode. Thank you Ted.
A beautiful photographer in a beautiful and tastefully done video. This is exactly the kind of video i wished there was more of on a platform like youtube
I've loved Alexey's work for a while, and after watching a 10 minute video I'm seeing his images in a completely new way. I think that means you nailed it , Ted. Congratulations, couldn't be happier for you.
MR. TITARENKO IS REALLY A BIG ARTIST. I THINK PUTTING, THE MUSIC OF SHOSTAKOVICH, INTO B/W IMAGES IS A BIG INTELLECTUAL EFFORT. ALL THE BEST FROM SPAIN. NANO.
Extremely inspirational. Music is sure connected with photography, as it is sculpting in sound, and photographs are sculptures in light. Love his work.
The shooting, editing and music were extremely well done. One of your best efforts. And all that goodness coupled with Mr. Titarenko's lovely images, too.... Standing Ovation
Quality Images, great soundtracks, and above all an intimate introspection with the artist, Alexey Titarenko. I am very fond of his work and I find it interesting that he keeps pushing himself towards new avenues. Too many photographers find a style and stick with it, taking no risk and thus fleeing new ventures. I like how his musicality intervenes with his visual concept. A creative mind! It was quite appropriate to see him in the darkroom working on prints. He chooses the hard way but gets amazing results. Score 10 on 10. Nice going Ted! The Artist series has begun and it’s above my expectation.
Just watched this and the second episode. Blown away by the depth you manage to achieve in such a digestible format. I'd expected amazing work from this channel but you've really managed to surpass yourself! Can't wait for Sunday...
Great work. Honestly, I was expecting a longer and more detailed video, but having this content out is invaluable. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Stunning work Ted, you're always raising the bar! Thank you for shining a light onto Alexey's work, he's quickly become a personal favourite and a huge inspiration.
Ted, I really enjoyed your original film about Alexey Titarenko, and subsequently bought his book, great work. This film has a lot of depth, and to pair it with the music of Shostakovich is superb. Really well done.
Almost everyone wants to take pictures. Very few want to take the time to take a photograph. I love Alexey's artistic vision! Thanks Ted for doing what you love! Looking forward to next weeks series.
Fantastic work, Ted. I really enjoyed the insights from Alexey Titarenko, an amazing artist. You did a great job on combining the footage with the fitting music. Already looking forward to the next episode. :)
Awesome film. I had seen some of his work but not of the author. I had supposed he was much older. I like this video very much. Thanks for making and sharing it,
What an amazing guy, the way he documented the fall of the Soviet Union and the comparisons he made with the hardships of WWII in Leningrad. I get the links to Shostakovich too. This guy is real star.
Inspiring work. In my youth I refused to build my own darkroom, simply because I believed having one required a permanent place, and I refused to stay put or stand still as I saw it. Something was missed, no doubt, though I never stopped taking pictures. I am looking forward to the next 'transmission'.
Ted this series was such a great way of exploring photography rather than the gear. I loved your photography book series. You introduced me to fan ho and Titarenko. It wasn’t about the gear but the content. I fully understand these videos take a lot of man hours and it is only you. This is what made you stand out from the rest of the gear driven channels. It is one of the reasons why I started following you. Sadly these kind of videos are no longer being done and gear videos are more the landscape of your channel. I hope you have plans of revamping or reintroducing these kind of series.
Wonderful film of an interesting artist. I like how you captured the fact that his soul, anguish, and technical skills contribute to the process of his style and artistry.
Thanks for making this video! I just discovered it today. I really enjoyed learning about Titarenko. I plan on sharing his photographs and this video with my students next time I teach the history of modern Russia and the USSR.
This is so great... The way he explained the reasoning behind the body of work included in 'City of Shadows' one can see that it is really a long process ... And its connection with Shostakovic's musical piece was sublime... what a great artist. Thanks for making this.
Hell of a way to kick off this series, Ted! Excited for the next episode!
