I've got some British psychedelic/garage band compilations cds of 60s music, and there are 3 Status Quo songs on them ... "Pictures of Matchstick Men," "I Can Hear the Grass Grow," and "Spicks and Specks." I love those songs! I haven't dug any deeper than that, though I've been meaning to do so.

You're right the packaging of these cd's are briljant. Please let see more of this kind. I recently bought a cd box set of Van Halem. Called the studio Albums 1978-1984. Same story. Every cd is packaged in a good karton as a shrunk down version of the vinyl album. I love it. Done so well. And everything you need to have of Van Halen ha. The sound is killer too. And yes Screaming for vengeance is a metal album. But in my opinion didn't age that good. The hits are great.

I think the black cd "lp-look-alike" is very cool. I have a Black Crowes cd somewhere in my collection (maybe it was "Before the Frost..."?) that has the same LP look. I can remember sliding it out of the case and being quite shocked to see a cd that was all black and being concerned if it would even play!
I believe I have a Status Quo compilation in my collection that I'm going to have to go back to and give a re-listen now!
If original Christmas songs are your thing, look up "It's Christmas Time " by Status Quo. I stumbled upon a video on RUclips a couple years ago. It's become one of my favorite Christmas songs/videos. (I'd also like to mention "The Season's Upon Us" by Dropkick Murphys. Great video!!)

Love that Judas Priest album. It was the 3rd one i ever heard, as Hell Bent and Unleashed were the first 2 i remember as a kid. Looks like it came out when i was only 6 and i bet i got it for my 7th birthday or at xmas that year. Still an amazing album. I would never get sick of it. I did have that MOFI copy when it came out. It all sounded the same to me. LOUD!
Not sure why i never heard Status Quo. Considering my dad was into heavy metal when i was growing up. I do know that Down Down is the first song i heard. Because its one of those cut to years later when i heard it in a film and was like, wait a second. I know that song. So maybe it came from one of the mixtapes that i got from someone in public school. Unless it was on a K-Tel album i mightve owned back then.
And yeah. If they did better cd packaging like that, then yes. Looks nice and thick. So it should hold up well. I cant stand digipacks. They always end up looking like crap years later. And usually a crushed spine and broken spindles inside.

Hi Frank - great video as usual.
The only issue I have with CD packaging like that is sliding it in and out of a paper sleeve. The surface of a CD is much more subject to micro-scratches that can affect play than that of regular album vinyl. Most CDs don't last long when they get handled roughly.

I started high school in 1982-83 and I can easily plot my musical trajectory into hard rock / heavy metal. Traveling to games on our inter city basketball bus, a buddy of mine was the first to bring along a ghetto blaster and two cassettes: Genesis' self-titled and Def Leppard - Pyromania. The first cassette of my own was Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. Shortly thereafter Back in Black become the pre-game warm up go-to, and from there it continued to get heavier. My own first records which I still own) were Pyromania and Quiet Riot's Metal Health, but certainly couldn't buy much of my own at that age. I had a "rich" friend who was always buying the latest metal releases; enter vinyl to cassette 'dubbing' (another 80s-ism...along with the "mixtape"). With the advent of the 90 minute blank cassette, you could load Shout out the Devil on one side and wait for it! Screaming for Vengeance on the other side. For your younger viewers, this era (in Canada anyway) was advent of the music video, and at some point in the later 80s and on shows like the Pepsi Power Hour on Muchmusic, chances are that you were going to see You've Got Another Thing Comin' video in the rotation. From watching your channel, I know that your a big Priest fan. I'm not the fan of them you are, but I did spend a lot of time with Screaming as well as their follow up to it, Defenders of the Faith.

Hey Frank, Quo was pretty known in Europe, especially with the hit "In the Army Now". My qualm with CD packaging is that the artwork is so goddamn small! So many details are lost compared to a 12" vinyl sleeve! One could only wish the CD packaged in a regular vinyl sleeve (like The Beatles remixes deluxe boxes), but I guess for usual releases it destroys the purpose. But maybe there could be an in-between size like 10"?

    Regarding the CD packaging, Frank-
I agree that the packaging is gorgeous, but I have an issue with CD's being stored inside cardboard sleeves of any kind--- not digipaks where the CD sits inside a plastic tray, but rather when the CD comes in DIRECT CONTACT with the cardboard itself. Over time when taking the CD out and putting it back in, the CD will become scratched and scuffed (even if you use the utmost caution and care). I've even had a few cases of brand new CD's already having blemishes on them upon taking them out of the shrink and cardboard sleeves for the first time. THANKFULLY... I have stacks upon stacks of slimline jewel cases (remember those?) I saved from my CDr days... Any time I purchase a CD in cardboard (such as the two albums from the Dirty Knobs for example) the discs IMMEDIATELY go into those.
If you have a few minutes go through your collection and pull some CD's that are in these cardboard "card sleeves", and "digisleeves", hold them up to a light, and I'll just bet that you will find some that are scratched and scuffed.
I get why the traditional jewel case had to die; for environmental reasons and such, but record companies really should come up with a better solution. Perhaps a thin inner made of non-abrasive material to protect the CD inside? 🤔 Thanks for reading , have a great weekend my friend, and keep on spinnin'👍

Being in England, it seems weird to me seeing Status Quo introduced as an almost unheard-of band. They opened the biggest gig the world had ever seen (Live Aid) and at one point (2005) have been in the top 25 most-charted artists of all time on the UK chart by number of weeks. For bands with most hit albums, they are 3rd only to the Rolling Stones and Shadows (equally on 43 each), above the Beatles in 4th. The other 11 acts in the top 15 are all solo artists.

The chaos approves of your heavy rotation of JP's "Screamin'". I believe, specifically, Priest was just beginning their "Prime" and if I was listed a "Metal" then, it is still listed "Metal" now. More accurately put "NWOBHM" (New Wave of British Heavy Metal). I think that is why the whole Heavy Metal "family tree" has sooo many sub genres of Metal. JP is legend to me because their progression was more or less heavier and heavier (I mean jeez "Fire Power" is one of their heaviest and their most current!) Thank-you fro a swell show! \m/

Hey Frank - huge STATUS QUO fan here (one of the few from Canada!). Quo's sound evolution over the last 50-odd years: started out psych pop >> hard boogie >> pop boogie >> rock'n'roll. Personally, my fave record is Blue For You .. for the same reasons that you noted (most consistently heavy record), but the Quo record ain't too far behind. I would suggest that you check out Never Too Late next for some prime 80s Quo. Then onto the 90s and beyond. Rock on!

Packaging can make a difference. That said I do not think everything should be well packaged like that. I am a huge Clash fan and I have pretty much everything I come across. They did a box set of singles where there is special packaging like this and each CD looks like the 45. I know this because years later I found and purchased the 45s. The UK singles look the same as the ones in the box set, the mass produced ones from the US tend to look more generic. I have a mix of both.
While I have multiple box sets of the Clash and other bands, I am glad they did this just for the singles and not for everything. Makes it cool and stands out.
I think it is cool that a fan took the time to send you a well thought and curated collection. Happy Holidays to you and your family amigo! ☺👍🎄

Big fan of Status Quo and like you, I have always pronounced it with a short a. Will try to get in the habit of saying it correctly.
My favorite album by them happens to be the first I got which is Piledriver, that and their psychedelic album Pictures of Matchstickable Men or whatever the title is lol. Is There A Better Way is probably my favorite song by them.
Love the packaging and it would definitely entice me to buy CDs more.

      @Protometal66 Год назад +1

@@Channel33RPM Yes they do. You might not like the first album with Pictures of Matchstick Men ( very 60s ) but the next several albums are in the vein of Quo. I really like 1982 from 1982 , of course :D but it's very polished and more commercial sounding so it also might not be your thing but you'll probably enjoy quite a bit of their catalog.

Interesting band Status Quo, another undervalued Blues Rock/Hard Rock/Psych Rock band like Humble Pie, The Small Faces, Blodwyn Pig, Frijid Pink, Weed, Mother Superior, Fanny, Faces, Hot Tuna, Thin Lizzy, Andromeda, Dust, Morgen, Sir Lord Baltimore, Flied Egg, Toad, Black Cat Bones, Blackwater Park, Leaf Hound, Cressida, Indian Summer, Toe Fat, Tonton Macoute, Juicy Lucy, Montrose, Samson, Bang, Budgie, etc. I discovered them through a magazine that I have where there is a special about the Monsters Of Rock festivals, Glastonbury, etc, and about little valued bands from the 70's.

Love the video, as cds go i am a regular buyer of cds, I do buy albums here and there but mainly cds. And yes wish the record companys would put more thought in the packaging of cds, alot of cd releases are cheaply made. Not much enfo and I HATE the digipak cds.

I'm not a fan of mini-LP packaging. We'll have to start putting them into clear sleeves to protect them from shelf or ring wear, just like LPs, and that's just a hassle. I actually have come to appreciate the original CD jewel case design. Yeah, they can crack or break, but they do a great job of protecting the contents, and if the case becomes damaged then you can easily replace it. Also, if all you know are today's ultra-flimsy jewel cases, the original design looked about the same but weighed almost twice as much. They didn't fracture with every little bump and knock.

  • @nick_vee
    @nick_vee Год назад

Call it nostalgia, but I wish all CDs went back to using the plastic jewel cases and double/triple CDs went back to the “fatboy” wide jewel cases. These skimpy “digipak” cardboard album replicas are so cheap and flimsy, I find them getting bent corners and ringwear and scuff marks. The clear plastic parts of all my old disc cases may be scratched and cracked, but the booklets and CDs are immaculate. They did their job protecting their contents. And you can easily read the titles on the spines.
Also, “Screaming for Vengeance” brings back memories. It was the first CD I ever bought when I purchased my “newfangled digital CD player” around 1985 or 1986. Those early CBS discs made in Japan sounded amazing. I still have it in my CD rack and pull it out and play it often. 👍🏼

Not a fan of that sort of mini-LP CD packaging. Mostly because it doesn’t protect the surfaces on the disc well. I wasn’t fond of Digipaks until I found some quality sealable sleeves to keep them in, now they’re my favorite.
I still prefer older CDs to later reissues as they tend to suffer less from overly compressed loud mastering. If you can find the late ‘80s / early ‘90s Ryko CD reissues of Bowie and Zappa, those are to my ears some of the best sounding CD reissues ever.

I just haven't been interested in buying CDs since I started getting back into vinyl a couple of years ago. I have bought a few but that were just for convenience (to be able to take with me somewhere) and so I wouldn't have to rip them from the vinyl myself. Plus they were cheap enough haha. The price on CDs has skyrocketed like crazy. I'm glad I bought a lot of the latest remastered versions of what I like on CD a few years back when you could get them for $3 to about $10 tops.
Cool packaging would definitely help but it wouldn't make me want to buy a CD anymore than if it was just regularly packaged. If I was still buying CDs a lot, yes it probably would make a difference to me. But I like to get the music I like in the format that I'm most drawn to and while I still have no problem with CDs I just don't hardly ever buy them anymore.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Frank!

It's always weird, when Americans talk of Status Quo like it's some old lesser known rock'n'roll band. Here in Finland they literally are (were?) textbook examples of classic rock and staple in radio channels that play older music as well as in any hockey game
I mean literally, back in elementary school in early 00's there was 2-3 page section about rock music in music class textbook: There we're two pictures in there, one of Status Quo and other of Deep Purple.

I guess I will be the outlier here, but I love jewel cases, they best protect the prize that matters, the CD. I absolutely hate digi-pack and think it's one of man's worst inventions. When I want a CD I have to search the internet on how it is packaged, if it's any kind of paper/cardboard packaged and exposed, it does not exist to me, my alternative is checking Japan imports because sometimes they treat it with some respect and package it in a jewel case. I first turned against digi-craps with Van Halen's Live: Right Here, Right Now CD, it sat on the shelf and just disintegrated, luckily I bought one from ebay that came from BMG the music club (it was in jewel case), I was saved! Cheers!
