This PC Engine Core Grafx Mini (TurboGrafx 16 in US money) was sent over to me by Dean over at @mancaveretrogaming5245
It had a failed USB controller chip so the controller and the USB ports didn't work... He tried to replace the chip, but sadly failed! Can I repair the damage caused and get this thing working again?
Let's try and fix it for Dean!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid Rainbow Stars Parasol Island
Parasol Stars is Bubble Bobble 3, you were right that Rainbow Island was Bubble Bobble 2.
11:24 But this isn't Bubble Bobble II, this is Bubble Bobble III :)
It seems your projects get easier but in reality you're just getting way better ! Well done Stez.
Definitely the latter: trace replacing is a very messy job, and doing it on the first try is an achievement.
Thanks M.! Yeah, I would've struggled with this a couple of years back. Definitely feel more comfortable doing it now! 😍
@ It is messy, yet so fun and satisfying. I was doing a 0.1mm trace repair yesterday on a non-removable board inside of a 40mm 4 wire fan. Was shocked I managed to get the soldering iron tip down inside. Everyone should give it a try. One day I might even invest in a microscope.
@@StezStixFix Thank you for not being modest.
I was gonna say.
Proper howling at my shoutout! Thank you x
🤣 glad you enjoyed! Thanks again for the capture card, it worked a treat! You're a star 😍
Who else sticks around here for like 20% for the fixes but 80% for HIM?
Steveo, Check out the title screen at 11:24 you were playing Bubble Bobble 3. Thats why you got confused fella!
Solid!!!
Really appreciate this, the Core Grafx will definitely be taking pride and place in the mancave collection!
My pleasure! Thanks for sending it over to me and I hope it carries on working well! 😍
Didn't know they had made a new "mini" version!
¡Gracias!
Your trace fixing has reached new heights. Great stuff Steve.
Nice one, Steve! I dunno why, but I always get the urge to look away when you put on the UV light 😅
🤣 Thanks AFU!
That's pretty fluxed up.
And i really loved the take-me-back-to-Sugarhill Gang memory lane trip but I also always really really like the music that you use between the different steps.
I listen to all of the intro songs. Loved the Rapper's Delight homage today.
I'm a 44 year old nerd, but even my teenaged daughters think that your flow is pretty solid and that this is a better way of thanking your Patrons than just listing them.
Man, that pad for pin 2 refused to give up!
Your intro is one another level. Always new and fresh
"Core" Blimey- another fantastic fix by Captain Bodge himself😅😅
Captain Bodge to the rescue! 😁
Nice one Steve ! And Amazing song!. You know what could be useful for someone like me? If you can say which temps do you use for solder/de solder.
Good shout Emilio! I do try and remember but it quite often slips my mind! I'll definitely try harder in future videos, even if it's just a voice-over or text on screen! 👍
the musics... oh so nostalgic 16bit era
Fixing a broken thing then using that broken thing to fix ANOTHER broken thing is true satisfaction 💯
My favourite mini console, that menu music is just awesome
Brilliantly done Steve thanks
Super talented RUclipsr my favorite repairs learned so much keep up the fantastic videos 😁
Great fix as always ! S-O-L-I-D
Cheers for the upload Steve.... missed them
Got lucky with the pads there! 😅
Definitely, it could've been so much worse! 😬
Best Patreon segment yet! That was great haha
Great video Steve! I really enjoy your problem solving skills...and also the songs too!😂 Man that game capture looks great too.
Have to say, this has become my favourite channel on RUclips.
Props to “Repairs Delight” Nice!
Nicely done Steve!
Nicely Done Steve 👍 Great Video as always :)
Yeah Steve,it's Look and not Luke.
Another great video… thanks Steve.
Is ‘VOS’ available to sing at my wedding?
I’m very surprised!! You did a goos job!
I do like when you post your RUclipss, keep it up,thanks
The music in this video even sounds like a PC Engine CD game. Between that guitar tone and the synth bells at least
Little tip when you have loose pads that are still connected smooth them down flat cover with a thin layer of solder mask cure to rock hard then scape back to copper' more easy than replacing pads/traces ....
RMC collaboration, yes
Is it just me or the raps are getting better everytime ? 😂
Excellent video, Steve. Looking all SOLID xD
Got to say this channel is the best on RUclips love everything about this I don't know anything about electronics or microchips etc but just great to see what you do and of course love the English humour solid lol its almost therapeutic
I looked up the data sheet for that chip. Pins 4 and 5 are D- and D+ for Port 4 and pins 10 and pins 11 are D- and D+ for Port 1. I thought for sure you wouldn't get controller one to work. I wonder if maybe controller 1 is hooked up to port 4. Either way, if that's got spots for 4 controllers, I think 2 of them are not going to work.
I'd love to see a video where you explain a little more about what you are using and where you get it from, ie tools, or the wire, what it is, is it just a thread of copper (I assume not) etc etc
Stop it, that photo of Kip!! 😂😂😂
Kip the Kip Hakes.
According to the game splash screen, Parasol Stars is Bubble Bobble III, not II.
I remember playing parasol stars when i was like 4 years old. i could never find any of the gameplay anywhere cus i couldnt remember the name but finally i know it after watching this video xD thank you!
I've been using high heat resistant epoxy to re-adhere loose pads or replacement pads, especially for anchor pads, for a while now and and it works quite splendidly.
Restorer's Delight!
Excellent repair and video Steve!!! 🐺😁
Nice fix again Steve, well done.
I have to keep reminding myself that a lot of the work you do like this is literally under a microscope.
awesome video, great song
Stez is here. Yeah
Ceefax™️ called and they want their music back 🎶
I almost fast-forwarded, but I like this little rap.
Thanks for making me laugh Steve, love the vids!
My dream retro console, one day I will own one 😊
Bizarrely, Gordon the Gopher is a bit controversial nowadays. 😮
Bubble Bobble II IS Rainbow Islands, but the game you chose was Bubble Bobble III, which is Parasol Stars lol
LOL
Bubble Bobble
Rainbow Islands
Parasol Stars.
That's a lot of Jumpers for Summertime 🤣
Nice
Your choice of incidental music suggests you might be a fan of Camel... if so, please come out as there are precious few open Camel fans in the world!
If theres a problem, yo, Steve will solve it, lets chill with dave while he wicks up the solder......
Doo dooo dooo de de doo doo NICE.
Solid work as per usual.
Hope vannilla ice isnt rattling around in the head of whoever reads this, if so I do apologise.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
have you ever played the game about fixing retro consoles called retro gadgets on steam
have you ever considered either gluing down the lifted traces of using some of that soldering mask to secure them better?
Excellent fix. You are a genius
I don't know much how these things work, but the two leg without pad why didn't get any love?
Your soldering skills are improving video after video.
Your rap reminded me of "Cosmo D" from back in the day.
mad skills
Can we please have an album with all the VOS rap?
How much did you have to pay Mick to sing there at the end? Money well spent!
Another quality and entertaining video ty !
I’m here for the music lol
I shouted through the wall at a dog and it shut up. Maybe I'm its master.
Love your content.
For some reason, round my way, the song at rhe end was always, ♪ straight into your porridge ♪. No clue why.
😊I love the song
StezStix Delight
Best rap ever!
The rap is back with a vengeance 😄
Stick to the G funk bruv. You are actually good at it.
I wonder how hot your solder station is since you flux burn so fast away and make solder tin uncontrol !?
Great fix. How did you work out the three you left didn't need wire traces added?
Simply Bread.
What's the UV lamp you are using to cure the solder mask?
nice solid fix and video :)
Is there ever a time when a bit of Simply Red isn't called for?
As always incredible fix!! What's the name of the ending song Stez is covering?? I feel like I remember it from way back in the day
For anyone curious, its Stars by Simply Red!! Great tune
I'm sure I've asked, but my memory is shit 😂. Which flux do you use?
😁 I'm currently on Chipquik SMD291 flux. Good stuff! 👍
@@StezStixFix Great, thank you. The flux I've been using has the consistency of Vaseline. It works but I really don't like using it, I think it's meant for copper plumbing.
Solid work on this one, repairing traces isn’t easy!
Prior Repair. Attempt. Gone. Wrong. Can. l. Fix. It
WHat kind of microscope do you use? I am interested in picking one up.
What's the small grinder you're using at 8:18?
The more you repaire the quicker the better you get at fixing stuff did you ever fix emulation box and stuff
Hey Steve… how about finding a spot too install a 5v regulator on the board?? Could be a permanent fix for these?
with these you may not use a phone charger, well known problem
Hi Steve, not sure if best way to message, question for you, have you ever done a mod on an aAtari 2600 to make it work on current tvs?
Stümpern für fortgeschrittene 😂
Schwierig das in einem Song unterzubringen 🤣
You didn’t say “solid” after straightening the pin 😢😢😢
Hey yout show is really good. Just bought I new. Retro nes. When it powers on the controllers the buttons on scroll the main menu. If this interests you. Let me know. I have a feeling it's a bad board. But it might b different
I actually fixed it thanks to watching ur show. I decided to take it apart and look for obvious clues. Low and behold I saw a bridge of the solder points for controller #1. Alls I did was scraape away the bridge and I really didn't think it would work. Works perfect now. Thanks for your show and my eyes hurt looking that close. No wonder u have a magnifier. Very cool show
You've got bits on your shirt
