I'm getting the X2 hots. I have a few, 3 hybrid and just got the 5 hybrid. Very first swing I hit a missile 240 and drove the green on a par 4. I've never hit a ball so far and straight. This club rocks, now I need the iron set. Loving them
It's interesting the launch angle, spin and distance of these 7 irons to the newest 7 irons in 2020. Rick do a test between the SB and a current 7 iron.
Another solid video. Thanks! 30 degree loft for a 7-iron is crazy strong for me. My Titleist 680 7i is 36 I think. LOL! Heck, even my 6i is 32 degrees. Things have changed. : ) Keep'em coming!
excellent, unbiased, thorough and objective assessment of both sets of clubs. Well done! How about comparing the Callaway Apex and Apex Pro irons as well. I have heard that these are excellent irons. Cheers!
Great Review!!! 179 yard 7iron within 0.1 of the target line!!! That's more than a really good hit! That's f'ing incredible!!! Wish that swing came with the irons!!! Wow!?!?!?
Here in 2022 like, hmmm which of these two ironsets should I get to upgrade my r7s. Love the weight of the speed blades but I've been a fan of xhot/x2 hot clubs since the drivers came out.
Thank you Rick, As an American I prefer the British Videos such as yours and Mark Crossfields, You do a much more extensive testing and explaining your results as your American counterparts. I shall be taking my PGA PATs in the coming months and will try and use the knowledge learned on these sites as far as explanation goes to my students. Also I am much more of a fan of the LPGA and LET golfers, Ladies use more of their minds and course management to shoot lower rounds where as men attempt to dominate a course thru strength....If you can let me know of some British LPGA or LET ladies doing videos I would be very greatful
I prefer the "X2 Hot Pro" version of the Callaway. I have hit both of these clubs in and I've found that the Taylor Made doesn't quite of the distance but they are very easy to control and tend a little bit more forgiving but the Callaway's do really just explode when you hit them. I hit my current 6 iron about 180 yards carry but when I hit the Taylor Made I was carrying 195-200 but the Callaway's I was carrying 205-215 with a club head speed of about 95-100. I honestly say its all about feel and which club you think you'll be consistent with when choosing between the two because currently they are priced about the same.
your reviews are great any chance you can do taylormade speedblades 8 or 9 iron vs callaway x2hot or taylormade tour mb 8 or 9 since the speedblades pocket aren't on any iron under 8,
Hi Rick I thought the Rocket bladez, yellow beat the speed blade, just, the blue???? How do the Callaway Apex or Apex pro compete in this category. Cheers.
I looked up the specs on my old TaylorMade Burner XD irons (titanium face) and the 7 iron has a 30 degree loft with same shaft length as these. I don't think these new irons would carry any further? Anyone have an opinion?
Hi Rick, Which of the 2 would you recommend and why, youre honest opinion. The only thing that annoys me about TM is that a new model will be out in 3 months so the speed blade will drop in price, bloody TM. Which would suit me i am 20 HCP, cheers.
Hi Love the vids. Keep it up. I play Wilson FG 62 irons. The 30 degree loft is almost the same as my 5 iron (29). Could you review the latest Wilson sets please. Would love to hear A
Taylormade just felt better to me than the X2 Hot. If the two extra yards mattered, I'd loft the SB down half a degree and go with them over the Callaway.
Taylor made although make some decent clubs come out with a new set of clubs every two months that would annoy the hell out me if I just bought a new set
Makes no sense that comment. Manufactures come out with new stuff daily, however you don't buy every new set.X2 HOT are outstanding and i am a single figure golfer. No player wants to hit it shorter.
sk Plenty of players want to hit it shorter. Case in point: Dustin Johnson didn't want a set of Taylormade irons because he was carrying the 4 iron 280...he was mad because it was going the same yardage as his 3 wood. There are plenty of examples of pros, but also anyone that you know who uses blades clearly doesn't really care about yardage. Short(er) and straight is good...you don't have to hit 300 yard drives or an 8 iron 200 yards to be good at golf. Signed, Guy who hits it 300+ yards
Rick, purchased the Speedblade irons, to be honest not impressed! no better than my Nike pro cavity irons, speedblade looked good on trackman but on course they send the ball too high, need a better more penetrating ball fight, any ideas?
Shady business these loft wars. A good test would be to compare an MB, CB, and GI iron with the same loft/length specs. Or two GI irons with the same loft/length specs. Preferably using an Iron Byron. At the moment these comparisons are basically useless. Thanks for the effort though.
So basically you just proved that a stronger lofted club comes out lower and goes farther. You could strengthen the loft on the speedblade half of a degree and you'd probably get your extra 2 yards.
RickShielsPGAGolf Nobody. My point was who cares if a club goes 2 yards farther if it comes off lower? You could have just grabbed a 6 iron and hit it 15 yards further if all you cared about was distance. That being said I liked the video and the information it provided but I think the clubs should be considered equal due to the slight distance advantage being due purely to the loft adjustment. But we wouldn't have known that without your in depth review and ridiculously consistent swing so thanks and keep the videos coming!
Please stop with term "longer" when discussing irons. I'm impressed with driver length, not iron length. The reason you have a full set of irons is for accuracy, not length. If you want a longer iron shot, grab the next lower-lofted one from your bag. Although mentioned, this review should focus on dispersion, accuracy and consistency.
Sean M I think the point of accuracy and consistency is kinda out the door when the 7 iron of these sets is 1 degree stronger than the 6 iron out of my set..
PleaseNegus To be fair, the lofts on these sets need to be stronger to hit the ball lower. In fact, the speedblade irons could still use stronger lofts. When I went to demo the speedblades a while back, the 6 iron went a mile, but had the initial launch angle of some sort of wedge. It was hitting so high on the simulator screen that it would not read 90% of my shots. I didn't have this problem with any other club.
+Sean M It's hard for me to agree MORE, i'm getting older now & a good - consistent - accurate, 150 yards from my 7 iron is what i want.. With the rest of my ironS; hybrids; & woods being relied upon for a SOLID GAME

Agreed very interested in buying speedblade but due to age not sure

Hi there would the Taylormade irons be ok for a beginner
thanks so much my friend an i have these clubs an have agued on which is better
been waiting for this, thought you forgot Rick. I thought X2hot would win, Thanx
Did this test include Nike Covert VRS 2.0 forged? I hit the 7 iron 190+...and my SS was 10+ MPH slower at the time.
Be good if u could do a review of the standard apex irons Rick, keep up the good work
Have you made any comparisons between blades and cavity irons Rick?? Distance, control, spin etc...
your reviews are great any chance you can do taylormade speedblades 8 or 9 iron vs callaway x2hot or taylormade tour mb 8 or 9 since the speedblades pocket aren't on any iron under 8,

Did you compare either of these two to the Ping Karsten's?

Any comments on the Taylormade Speedblade HL with the Uniflex shaft?

He hit the SpeedBlade 184yds with 7300 rpm when comparing it against the Nike. Speedblade is much longer than the X2.
What irons do you hit?
Speed step85 shaft ?????
Taylormade just felt better to me than the X2 Hot. If the two extra yards mattered, I'd loft the SB down half a degree and go with them over the Callaway.
If you hit big drives the TM would be better I assume.
Taylor made although make some decent clubs come out with a new set of clubs every two months that would annoy the hell out me if I just bought a new set

U sound stupid AF

William Brown Thats a valid point but how many people would want to bend the lofts?
RickShielsPGAGolf Nobody. My point was who cares if a club goes 2 yards farther if it comes off lower? He hit the taylormade speedblade 184 in another video. From what ive seen from the 2 videos, that speedblade is forgiving, has height and spin.
plus being too long would hit over the green's!!
Just adjust accordingly. Go onto the range or local golf store and hit on the sim for a bit to find your distances.
It's all hype.

"dispersion, accuracy and consistency"? Try Iron Byron testing.
By adding a little forward press (de-lofting the club) anyone can hit any club further,
