Fantastic job. Newt really sells it with how she moves when she is wearing it. Metropolis is one of my favourite films.
The 100th anniversary of the release of METROPOLIS is just 7 years away, and I hope that there will be some special screenings of this SF masterpiece so that fans of this piece of cinematic history will get to experience seeing this film on a big screen. Please keep this in mind over the next few years, as I would expect that this outfit will be very much in demand for appearances leading up to the anniversary. Great job!
I like her Robocop quote at the end
I wasn't aware of the Metropolis Robot at all, but Newt is adorable. Congrats on the quality cosplay.
A friend was obsessed with the film Metropolis and Machinemensch-Maria. He bought the remainder of the original props, costumes, and film posters in Germany (which were in deplorable condition), and then made replicas and miniatures of Maria. He's now deceased and I often wonder what happened to the all of it.
If only more of the materials survived and too bad no one has ever made decent statues, toys or busts based on the movie.
I hope someone with the time can track that down. I know a lot of fans would love to see all that cool stuff
I declare here and now that Newt is the cutest woman on the planet~!! My God she is completely out of this world~!! So unbelievably beautiful~!! It must be hard for her to be living in a world like ours. Loved the video as I am a huge fan of the Movie~!! Thanks.
Really well done piece of work on Robot Maria. I don't doubt that you get comments like "it's C3PiO", as the lineage is pretty direct between Metropolis and Star Wars, but I know you must feel pretty good when you're correctly identified. Congratulations.
Great job on the back, totally authentic style
A very nice build and amazing cosplay.
Excellent job on the costume!
The Metropolis robot was always a pretty creepy design and seeing it come to life in a modern setting is just as creepy as it was in the film.
On the other hand, Newt is adorable. :)
Awesome job. Totally badass.
That costume Rocks, Well done Newt
Fascinating! Than you for sharing!
Great Costume. I would definitely freak out, if I would see Maria from Metropolis walking around :)
The girl was so cute
Wow, I love the costume, great job!
Absolutely stunning build. I am considering making Maria for my wife, and your work is inspiring.
Would love to see yours when it's done. Thanks and good luck with your build. Hope our video helps.
A really well executed costume! I read somewhere the original prop costume was made out of a laminated wood or fiber, kind of like Masonite. A backstage photo shows the Maria actress with the mask off, being cooled with a handheld blower that looks like a hairdryer I had in the 80s. Thanks for this video!
The original robot costume was actually made using a very early version of Plastic Wood.
I still to this day find futura creepy, but something about his design grabs my attention with such force i don't think i would be able to describe.
*it's fascinating.*
(great costume tho)
Late to the party, having just you guys thanks to recent Iconicon.
Checked a few videos and some great builds/costumes.
This costume in particular is amazing. Good skills 👏
Brilliant.
excellent
Is Rebekkah and Angel ? Crazy cool costume - Hollywood quality there .
Nicely done! I Make medieval armor for use at Renn Faires (for myself only) and it can get very hot. I hope this is a bit cooler to wear!
To wear that suit has to be amazing!!
Looks 👍 A bit hard to move around In though.
That is great project and fantastic build. The rest of my long harbored thoughts are unsuitable for public dissemination.
Agreed
Damn the girl is super cute/ pretty 😍😍😍😍
someone is very lucky to have a gorgeous robot with a Adorable girl inside !
How well can you see in it
Hi it's me Sarah, the one that you saw down stairs and your costumes are alsome and I have Subscribe to you
That empty stare is positively creepy.
I really get the problem of not being correctly identified at cons.
I wore a custom Mandalorian character for years, and got called all kinds of names by people trying to guess who I am.
Most obscure were Darth Vader and Red Power Ranger. While holding an enormous shotgun prop.
C-3PO at least makes sense for Maria, due to the direct inspiration Ralph McQuarrie took. Dot Matrix, eh... kinda.
It doesn't get weird until somebody calls your robot Iron Man, I think.
I thought the song on Benny Hill was called, "Yakety Sax" by Boots Randolph.
Now she just needs some glowing hula hoops☺️
Just closing my eyes and listening to the voice of Reb... I mean, Newt, feels she's like, 6 years old :/
One of the inspirations of Blade Runner.
really incredible. also, you guys live on the Death Star?
That's one of our backdrops we display at local conventions. We try to give as much eye candy in our videos as possible. Its more interesting than someone's bedroom wall.
@@SimpleTricksNonsense a likely story. you probably just live on the Death star.
Lovely work of an iconic character! I see both silver and gold versions in the video. I guess you settled for gold? Has gold been confirmed as the actual color?
As I understand filming back in the 1920s, while the result is monochrome, the film was often tinted to fit the mood of the scene; the scenes of the robot were mostly tinted in blue, with yellow for the scene when it's burned.
Also, film stock was available in different sensitivities, so that in many photos of the first half of the 20th century, red or yellow can record as a dark shade (Boris Karloff's makeup as the Frankenstein monster was pale green to photograph like dead skin), so a gold robot on the set would photograph like a gun-metal dark grey / steel effect on film.
Amazing costume! Can Newt get out of it on her own if she needs to or does she need help?
Once the hands and arms are off she can do most everything else.
@@SimpleTricksNonsense So can she get the hands and arms off on her own or is she stuck without help? I mean it is a really stunning costume, but in case of an emergency is she SOL without someone there to at lease detach the hands?
@@knightwolfpro4494 Its one of those costumes that requires a wrangler or handler. We have a few of them.
Most impressive. Electro-Babylonian robo-chick for the win.
Puts my StarScream to shame.

Next can you do Brigitte Helm's dance scene? One my favorite scenes of the movie.
We are from Reva University, Bangalore, India. We are building a humanoid robot. We needed outer body design for our robot. After all the research we are really happy to come across your website. We liked the designs very much. We would love to hear from you. Will be waiting for the reply.
Please reply as soon as possible
Not sure we can help. This is only a costume made from plastic. If you're interested in this design then watch the original film Metropolis and research the original design. Its a beautiful, eerie design.

17:05 -- Huh... well, if the robot suit ever suffers a "wardrove malfunction" in the middle of a convention, then Newt can claim she was really Irma Vep^-in-disguise the entire time.
^ Feuillade's "Les vampires'"
Is it easy for you to talk while wearing the suit?
Not really. Newt speaks softly to begin with so to hear anything her handler (me) has to get right up against the mouth slit to hear anything.
Oh, I understand.
Where can i find this clip 6:26
It is from The Man in the Iron Mask. The good version from 1939 not the Leo version from the 90's.
Don't call me Rebecca!!! Snotty kid
It's a reference to Aliens
Do we know that the original costume was gold-colored? In my imagination, the character was a steel gray to emphasize its mechanical nature.
We don't. Originally we painted it a steel but that was dull. One of the original posters of the time had it gold. At the same time we wondered if the steel color was based on a collective memory thanks to the film being in black and white. Add to all that another fan made version was done in a steel color. Soooo... we stuck with gold to mimic the poster and differentiate ours from the other fan made one.
I have read that it was sprayed with a shellac containing copper and iron powders so it would have been a very shiny metallic golden bronze color. Warmer hues also tend to register better on black and white film, creating more nuances and depth in colour, so it is very likely that it was not silver.
The only color posters show the robot as gold colored. I suppose it could have been meant to be bronze but differently a yellow metal.
you say there might be no back to the costume well if you look at the film again you can see the back briefly
Can you share a time stamp that scene? We're interested to know what it looked like in 1927. Many renditions since have taken liberties and even the "official" recreation is different from all other renditions. Now the bigger thing will be to see if the average convention goer even knows what they're looking at character-wise.
Karsten Jackson-Lange: The only shot of the back was from the shoulders up. We never see a full back shot in the film.
And it was in complete shadow, so no details can be seen@@rebekahcox639

The way the shoulders and upper arms are fixed must be very restrictive and add to any claustrophobia
The original prop was lost in a house fire... not during filming
Interesting, most sources state that it was destroyed during filming. Were did you hear about it being burned in a house fire?
@Newt watched a documentary on television over 10 years ago stating that. I've been unable to find that doc again.
how do you go to the bathroom dressed in it?
😂
LOL I just make sure to go beforehand and I normally only wear it for an hour or two at a time so it's not a problem.

Too bad the cost of replicating that costume for those who want a full size model kit they can build and display is prohibitive. I'm sure someone will do that eventually.
Sideshow Toys has made several life sized statues. I think they're one of the few businesses truly equipped to take on a project like that.
Fantastic work!⭐⭐⭐ I have a photo with you from DragonCon. Nice to finally know who the team was.
.
Thanks so much!
@@SimpleTricksNonsense You're very welcome.
Can everyone stop simping for Newt lmao I just came here to see the robot
Different strokes for different folks~!!😁
Rickarama Trama nah man we just have too many simps here Lmao don’t justify it
I would love to put padlocks on all the joints. wonder what she does if she needs to pee ?
