Quick: name the best surfer to ever come out of Venice Beach, California. If you said, "Venice has never produced good surfers," you're wrong. Despite having, uh, variable, wave conditions, Venice's unique culture makes it a cradle for creative talent, whether in surfing, skating, or various types of art. In this episode, we get to know legendary surfer Rick Massie and learn about what it's like to take on the WQS without sponsors. We also check in with the next generation in the form of up and coming grom, Noah Hill. Venice might not be known for its waves, but it's still an amazing place to be a surfer.

Ricky gave me ride to Huntington Beach one day over 20 years ago. Me and Diego from Venezuela. If you see this thanks bro, I don’t think we gave you any gas money. Neither Diego or I had a car at the time and didn’t get to get out of Venice much, heading down to Huntington for half a day meant a lot to us. It looks like you’re still driving that same black truck.

And he bought another house in 1970 on Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz (Steamer Lane) for 30 grand, converted the garage into a guesthouse where he can live and rents the house out at about 5 grand a month. So he spends the winter in Southern Cal in Ocean Park (he converted the attic into a nice dwelling) and the summer in Santa Cruz taking in about 15 grand a month rent . While he was converting both houses he lived in his car - a volkswagon van. And then he has another million or so in investments bringing in income. The guy is a genius. Started with nothing. A surf bum from the old 1950's Malibu days. Dora named him "The Masochist". Great guy.

I lived in East Venice (the nicer area of Venice). While at Venice High (‘64-‘67) everything by the beach was in disrepair. We would go down to what is now, the Marina Peninsula, to drink beer on the beach. Oil wells, in backyards and polluted canals. A real dump. We felt sorry for the people who lived there.
In the early ‘70’s these poor folks sold their little bungalows for 40k. They thought they made a killing.

I left LA 4 years ago. Lived there 44 years. Used to always surf Venice Break Water, Malibu Points, Zuma, Santa Monica, but my Pops got a house in Newport, so ended up surfing down there through most of my 20s. LA and Southern CA is pretty much destroyed as far as I'm concerned. The State is so corrupt and most the people are falling for the latest communist push of authoritarianism. I can't see myself ever going back which is sad, but at least I'm free and not a slave anymore.

  • @pops9190

We grew up surfing Venice with our wildman boat building waterman father, sailing and diving etc... We lived ON THE beach - at the pier since 1954, not back in the hood somewhere as these Johnny-come-lately bullshitters do.. Actually, only a few of us grew up On The Beach in Venice, and fewer still even surfed. .... and these folks ain't them. They weren't even around then.
    What a joke.
They have NO idea what Venice was in the '50s '60s and into the '70s. Nor do they know what it means to run out your front door and within 3 minutes be diving in to go bodysurfing, bellyboarding, skimboarding, diving off the pier into the tops of 10' breakers in the middle of the night in the summer - never.
They did not "live" at the beach, or hear the surf breaking every night. There were only 6 us from the Pavillion to the pier that Lived In The Water, Summer Winter Spring and Fall that did. We know who we are. You Missed that boat.
We were the ONLY ones that sailed and did any diving. My old man's Malibu Outrigger #66 the "Juryrigger" can be seen in the Endless Summer - Malibu scene, flying a hull in 1st point lineup through all the longboarders with me and my little brother perched out on the ama 8 feet up in the air.. Any of you know what a Malibu Outrigger is? of course not.
The incredible '50s & '60s sailing voyages into Baja and the Sea of Cortez, Mainland Mex and Central America and beyond into the South Seas etc..... aboard our vessel the "Crusader", all before the F'up stomp that took place down there in Central America.
Unfortunately, Venice BEACH - not somewhere east of the beach, has changed from a great place to grow up when Marine Del Rey was not even there, to the nightmare it is today.
The houses have been leased out for years for stupid money, nice to be elsewhere in fantastic places.
Ya just don't know what you don't know
Venice locals; or was it Royalty! ...... good god what a mindset - maybe even a prison - dream on

Of all the places in the South Bay to surf, Venice is one of the worst. Among the things you'll find in the water there are hypodermic needles, dirty diapers, dead animals, and raw sewage. Among the things you won't find in the water there are friendly people, barreling waves, or good surfers.
