Derek Jacobi is a wildly respected and famous actor over here who leapt at the chance to do Doctor Who, he said it had always been a dream of his to be on dw and one of the big soaps. Up until S6 there was a show called confidential that showed behind the scenes making ofs for each episode and usually guest actor interviews. Lot of fun for this one. Most of the cast didn't know how Chantho looked so she made a mad run back onto set as she was leaving so everyone would know he face. Simm the actor you see at the end of the episode said yes to DW because his son was obsessed with it and would never have forgave him had he said no. His kid got to watch his regeneration, what you see at the end of this episode.
John Simm - the new Master - had just starred in a hugely successful time travel (kind of) British TV series, Life on Mars. The show's format has been remade both in America and South Korea.
I've gotta say, it's so awesome to watch new viewers of Who react in such a positive and excited way. I grew up watching the show and after a while you forget how exciting it was to experience these episodes and cliffhangers for the first time. It's great to have the experience again second hand
Wish we could have seen more of the legendary Derek Jacobi in Who. His portrayal reminded me of the first Doctor - William Hartnell - from 1963. Sometimes kind,, sometimes forgetful, sometimes grumpy.
Honestly the reveal came out of nowhere. I miss these days where reveals like this were not rumoured months in advance. Derek Jacobi is an incredible actor on stage & screen & was superb in this, he also has further alternative adventures in audio stories with Big Finish as well. John Simm plays The Master now & he is also a fine actor really playing this derangemed iconic character. Think Joker meets Sherlocks Moriarty. Its been said many times as a villain it's more engaging when The Doctor has a foe he can converse with, understand & who knows him the best 👌 The icing on the cake is being from the same planet so there's no better match up.
Although I loved Derek Jacobi's brief turn as the Master, John Simm's Master (the new incarnation of The Master) is my favourite Master. His manic energy matches that of David Tennant's 10th doctor. John Simm has described them as being "two sides of the same coin." This combination of these two characters with these actors is peak Doctor Who. The Doctor and The Master have a long history together including classic Who. It goes back to being childhood friends and therefore is a complex relationship. I've heard described as once they were best friends, now they are worst enemies but have never forgotten their past. BTW Capt Jack Harkness was the first Who character who wasn't heterosexual and the first openly pansexual character on any TV show.
In a sense (according to writer/producer Russell T Davies), it was the Doctor who fired the opening shot in the Time War. The 1975 story Genesis of the Daleks has the Time Lords sending him way back to prevent the original creation of the Daleks. They took that kind of personally.
Oh, the fun begins.... :) THANKS for this!!!! And I need a new word for how happy I am to know you're going to add Ncuti to the mix! Counting down the hours to Saturday night! P.S. To Rekkai @nupefromdaville : *Maybe* it's them returning from 1969 and maybe not. The show is very open-ended because the BBC may want to add stories to the canon. It's what *we* see, not necessarily what happened. Ten and Martha could have had 50 adventures or more that we will never learn about until somebody writes one, more or all in a novel, comic or Big Finish audio adventure :) Real-life wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey :) P.P.S. to both: The "blogging" comment is really smart writing because a) blogging was relatively new at the time (there was even a Black blogging organization forming back then!) and b) the BBC had created and was writing a Martha MySpace blog! So Martha *was* blogging at the time!!!
I am so excited to see how far you guys have made it already with the episodes. I can’t wait to see your reaction to the next one! ❤. Loved your reaction to this one. To me this is also such a memorable episode for my whovian heart ❤
Russell T Davies is a pioneer of queer representation on British TV. He got his big break in the late 90s writing the show Queer As Folk. Jack being how he is was certainly unusual for the time as gay characters had only really started being included in that last decade.
I've binged all the videos and have finally caught up... This has been such an excellent opportunity to review old episodes leading up to the release of the new season! I've been adoring the commentary and humor that you guys bring to the table, it's nice to see an intelligent and adult perspective of a show that I saw as a child.
Had to come back and like all the videos I watched on the plane. Chan-tho is a favorite and an actress who reappears in another character in who spinoff.
I actually met Sir Derek Jacobi last Saturday. He's a genuinely lovely person, but my god, despite only being in the role briefly, he was such a GREAT Master. He has his own audio series set in and around the Time War and he is one of, if not the best incarnation of the character to date. They can be expensive, but if you're interested in some of the expanded media then I can't recommend his "War Master" series enough. Box set 1, "Only the Good", is so dark and truly amazing.
Jack running at the Tardis at the beginning of the episode was the last scene at the end of the finale of season one of Torchwood. Season one of Torchwood takes place after season 2 of Doctor Who, and during Season 3 of Doctor Who. You should probably watch Torchwood. The Master is the Doctor's best friend. They grew up together. They went to the time lord academy together with a Time Lady known as the Rani. They were all rebels and misfits together. Even so the Master is the arch nemesis of the Doctor and tried to kill the Doctor multiple times. The Master had nothing to do with starting the Time War. The Master is a reflection of how Time Lords are. The Doctor acts differently from the rest of the Time Lords. The Time Lords literally control all of creation and existence. They have the power to delete powers from existence
Derek Jacobi. We only got him in one episode but I can’t imagine anyone doing it like he did. Look up and watch everything he’s ever done. He’s one of the best actors out there. A real legend.
Forever a highlight of my life. I replied on a big finish Instagram post featuring Simms and Jacobi, saying, "Derek's Master is just staring at the ones behind the camera like, 'I said Young and Strong! Not naive and wimpy!'" The one word reply I got from Simms. "Ouch."
It was a great choice to have this role played by arguably one of the greatest actors of his generation. The fact that using just his eyes you can see him go from kindly to malevolent evil is a testament to how good he is.
Not sure if anyone told you this, but you guys need to watch season one of Torchwood. It ran at the same time as this season of Doctor Who. It ties in the story of how Jack came back.
The master and the doctor knew eachother at the academy on their home world. They fought in the classic series as enemy's quite a lot over the years especially the third doctor.
You are heading into a seam of really good episodes. The special effects and production values take a jump up and there are some epic storylines on the way. The Master is one of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis’s
Jack unintentionally got long life from Rose when she had taken in the heart of the Tardis. He did not have powers before that. And the Master is an old adversary from the original series. I don’t think it would be too dramatic to say The Master and the Doctor are archenemies. More complicated than that, but no spoilers, you’ll enjoy the ride, I think
7:25 dudes there is a video from the RUclips channel MelodySheep that shows what scientist think the end of the universe will look like based upon current physics. The video is called "TIMELAPSE OF THE FUTURE: A Journey to the End of Time" The time the Doctor and the gang are currently visiting is after what the Melodysheep video refers to as "The Age of Starlight". That's where we are now within the Age of Starlight, which if the physics of the video is correct is a very very very small fraction of time within the life of the universe. Once the last star blinks out it's not the end. The universe just keeps getting older and older, colder and colder and stranger and stranger until it reaches a point where matter as we know can't exist anymore. It's quite mind boggling. Kudos to writers for trying to explore what this could be like.
There's a mini-episode before the Christmas Special. I would really like to see your reactions to that. Also, you should check out Good Omens. David Tennant and Michael Sheen are stellar in it. Your reaction to the Master was great! I watched some Classic Who when I was a teenager and I was so happy they brought the Master back!

@@Legendary3Dgamer THANK YOU!!! I get being excited but they've asked repeatedly to not to speak on anything that comes after the episode they're reacting to. Let them enjoy it the way we all did back in the day.
@@Legendary3Dgamer I don't think this counts as a spoiler when the next episode is literally called "The Sound of Drums", it's barely different to saying "I'm excited for the next episode".
21:15, If the Doctor was Batman/ Bruce Wayne, then the Master would be the Joker. The Master though constantly trying to best the Doctor, he also considers him his only worth adversary. These two's energy can go from being old school chums to hated enemies within a second. There are classic Who episodes where something goes awry and they will start chatting like old colleagues collaborating on a white paper. However, throughout their various regenerations they always find on another and restart their never ending battle of wits.
Now I know it's my birthday! I am so excited you are at this point in the show, Utopia throws a lot of stuff at us, calls back to a bunch of previous episodes, and leaves us on one hell of a cliffhanger. Starting with "Human Nature", Season 3 is absolute 🔥 The storytelling and acting is some of the best stuff Doctor Who has to offer. So, I definitely understand Rekkai being frustrated with Martha giving everything away with her reaction to the watch, but I think the blame for that needs to go to the Doctor. Since Martha first met him, she's wanted to get to know him better, to learn about him, his world, and his people. Back in "Gridlock", she asked if they could visit his home planet, with the same sort of energy that Rose had when she asked to go see her father; there isn't any particular time or place that Martha wanted to visit, no personal journey where she tries to make the universe bend to her desires (not to say that Rose was trying to break time in "Father's Day", but rather that learning the Tardis was a time machine was what changed her mind from staying to going, because of the unique possibilities that presented to her), all Martha wants is to get to know the Doctor better, because of her crush on him. And the Doctor does share a little bit about hus planet at the end of that episode...but not likely much more than that. After all, when the Face of Boe tells him "You are not alone" and Martha questions what that means, the Doctor dismisses the notion that there could be other Time Lords around. Likely he didn't tell her about individual Time Lords from his past, or even if he did, he probably focused on the positive rather than the negative, as one is wont to do for those who are gone (such as Jackie painting a more flattering picture of Pete for Rose than was reality). So for Martha, seeing a watch that could mean another disguised Time Lord, she sees the possibility of the Doctor no longer being alone. She doesn't know that this one could end of being a nemesis, someone who shouldn't be made aware of the watch. And at least to her credit, she doesn't just tell him to open it then and there, she does have enough caution to try to pretend it's nothing, to tell the Doctor first. But the possibility that she, Martha, will be able to give this to the Doctor, so to speak, to be the one to tell him, "See? You're reall not as alone as you think you are!" makes it difficult for her to play it casual in that scene, because she is hoping against hope, and she's trying not to jump to conclusions until she's certain, but trying to suppress expectations means that energy will get released somehow. So although in hindsight, when we learn it's The Master, it's clear this is the kind of Time Lord who should have remained dormant, it can be frustrating that Martha got the ball rolling, I can understand why she wasn't able to maintain a poker face in that moment. I think if the Doctor had shared more, had told her the bad of the Time Lords along with the good, she would have been more prepared to be cautious, but because he doesn't share, she was working off the limited information she had, foremost being the solitude and loneliness of the Doctor. You don't go around saying "I'm the last of my people" if you're not missing the sense of belonging that comes from being one of many, of having a home and community of people like yourself. Speaking of the watch, I think it is something that every Time Lord gets, or at least would use in this particular instance. The fact that it's a watch, which means it helps one keep time, makes it a fitting vessal to keep a Time Lord as well. At least, that's my guess on why a watch specifically, although I wonder if other timepieces would also work. The fact that the pocketwatch can be opened or shut likely makes it a better fit, design wise, than say an hourglass or wristwatch. Oh, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned before, but showrunner Russell T. Davies also created the series Queer as Folk before he worked on Doctor Who, so there was a conscious choice to include LGBT+ elements when they could, especially with the inclusion of Captain Jack. When they first met him in season 1, the Doctor points out that he's from the 51st century, where attitudes are drastically different from the 21st century. "So many people, so little time." Although I guess Jack has literally all the time in the universe now! There's a lot more to say about this episode and the show in general. Just gonna leave off that I was so looking forward to your reaction to the YANA reveal and I am so glad you included it here!! The first time I saw this episode, I felt the same way, actual chills that this was something foreshadowed at the beginning of the season. Such a good payoff to that mystery! Looking forward to the next one!
As it's his first appearance in this show, I would HIGHLY recommend Life On Mars starring John Simm. It's been mentioned a few times but it's a fantastic programme - it gives a very good look at 1970s Britain (Manchester in particular) whilst being a brilliantly gripping police drama and yet STILL mixing in themes of sci-fi, mental health, challenging norms of the time, the whole shbang! I've always said it's (rather ironically) a show WAY before its time.
The Master is the third big villain from the classic series, along with the Daleks and Cybermen. He is basically the evil opposite of the Doctor. They are both renegade Time Lords who ran away from Gallifrey. The Doctor has adventures, saves people and fixes things while the Master seeks power and sows chaos. Professor Yana/The Master is played by British acting legend Sir Derek Jacobi. He mostly does TV and theatre so may be not so well known in the US. The instant change in demeanour when he reverts to the Master is impressive. Jack basically became immortal when Rose revived him in "The Parting of the Ways". He will revive and heal whenever something fatal happens to him and he now ages very slowly. Buckle up for the series finale!
17:31, there have been Classic and NuWho episodes in which the Doctor meets future incarnations of himself. Some of them are good and some of them are very bad.
Not sure if someone else has already commented this, but you get to see the Doctor's hand in a Torchwood episode and then they had a kinda crossover episode.
Capn Jack absorbed a force from the tardis after Rose Tyler stole it making him almost near time lord immortal and somehow time traveler . He cannot die but will age at an undisclosed rate of aeons and not years. But y'all already saw the death of Bo so y'all should know. I still want to know what that crystal planet/train thing was all about.
The way I see it, Blink is an incredible bit of standalone Television that also just happens to be a Doctor Who episode. It's quality is undeniable but it being so far removed from both The Doctor and companion is what keeps it from being one of my fave episodes. I actually like both the Human Nature / Family of Blood 2 parter and Utopia more than Blink. So funnily enough for me Blink is the weaker episode sandwiched between 2 stronger episodes lol
What's his power? Glad you asked. When Rose was the Bad Wolf entity, she did more that resurrect Jack. She used that same Time Lord power to make Jack a fixed point in time immortal. He must always remain in the same exact condition he was in when Rose resurrected him. If you watched Torchwood Children of Earth then it would be even more apparent

15:22 Since Rose brought him back to life. Jack basically has a healing abilities. Kind of like Wolverine. Hope this makes sense! 🙏🏽💪
Sudden immortality must be a tough thing to...face.
John Simm - the new Master - had just starred in a hugely successful time travel (kind of) British TV series, Life on Mars. The show's format has been remade both in America and South Korea.
Life on Mars is such a great show!! Would be amazing as a reaction series from these guys!
Life on Mars is a wonderful show and my favourite. I'd love to see their reactions to the original British show. (The US one was crap.) .
@@purrceys7959 The South Korean one is worth a watch, though.
@@MJE-riffs yes, I've heard the South Korean version is good. Unfortunately I've never seen a copy of it with subtitles as I don't understand Korean.
19:34 Meet the Master! The Doctor's arch enemy. Pretty much like Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty! 🙏🏽💪
Our Yin and Yang

Finally you met Him.

2:19 lol loved watching your joy for seeing Jack again
18:22 such a cool reveal
Enjoyed your reaction to the episode and the Master’s appearance
HERE COME THE DRUMS!!!!!
you guys are in for a treat now oooohh!!!
Lol I've always called my own OCD the 'Sound of Drums'!
1:00 hearing you call it simply 'who' is great
Honestly the reveal came out of nowhere.
I'd forgotten just how exciting the back end of Season Three was. Love that you're loving it!
Ten and Martha could have had 50 adventures or more that we will never learn about until somebody writes one, more or all in a novel, comic or Big Finish audio adventure :) Real-life wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey :)
P.P.S. to both: The "blogging" comment is really smart writing because a) blogging was relatively new at the time (there was even a Black blogging organization forming back then!) and b) the BBC had created and was writing a Martha MySpace blog! So Martha *was* blogging at the time!!!
Absolutely! i love that about this too. There are so many things that can be thrown in at any point and not completely damage the timeline.
Let the insanity begin!!!!
@@Syntell Sorry, too busy watching your #XMen97 ep9 video to adequately respond to this :)

Oh snaps! The shenanigans are about to begin! 🙏🏽💪
You got that right
And we're here for ALL OF IT!!!!
I glad you have caught up with the character of the Master.
lol. I’m so glad you know Sho’nuff! You made me actually lol.
Had to come back and like all the videos I watched on the plane. Chan-tho is a favorite and an actress who reappears in another character in who spinoff.
Please don't forget the mini-episode Time Crash, that takes place immediately after the end of this season!
Two straight episodes where the Doctor loses the TARDIS. Careless.
Chills. Mission accomplished! I love this episode! I wish we had more with Derek Jacobi. His few minutes as the Master were Masterful.
Now you guys are getting into the head and storytelling of St Russell T Davies. The man is a genius and now he's back for Ncuti. How cool is this???
there's a doctor who spinoff, torchwood, series 1 of which takes place before this.
Derek Jacobi. We only got him in one episode but I can’t imagine anyone doing it like he did. Look up and watch everything he’s ever done. He’s one of the best actors out there. A real legend.
Derek Jacobi gets to play the Master for about 5 minutes, and in that time becomes my favorite version to ever do it.
Forever a highlight of my life.
I replied on a big finish Instagram post featuring Simms and Jacobi, saying, "Derek's Master is just staring at the ones behind the camera like, 'I said Young and Strong! Not naive and wimpy!'"
The one word reply I got from Simms.
"Ouch."
Love his version so far.
Same! Ever since I watched him in "I Claudius" way back in the late 70's I've considered him one of the best actors from the UK.
he has played the Master a lot more, but only in the audios.... and he is just as good in them
It was a great choice to have this role played by arguably one of the greatest actors of his generation.
The fact that using just his eyes you can see him go from kindly to malevolent evil is a testament to how good he is.
Not sure if anyone told you this, but you guys need to watch season one of Torchwood. It ran at the same time as this season of Doctor Who. It ties in the story of how Jack came back.
Utopia has got to be one of my favourite episodes, in fact I only watched it 2 days ago 😍🇬🇧… I also get goosebumps every time I watch it 😍
The master and the doctor knew eachother at the academy on their home world. They fought in the classic series as enemy's quite a lot over the years especially the third doctor.
You'll definitely like the next few episodes, I can guarantee.
This is my favourite episode of New Who
Sir Derek Jacobi - Professor Yana - has played the Master in a series of spin-off audios, dealing with what he got up to during the fabled Time War.
the last few eps of this series are so good i love them so much
My popcorn is ready. Is yours?
Derek Jacobi!!!!! I have loved him since I, Claudius!
And The Master!
And Jack!
You are heading into a seam of really good episodes. The special effects and production values take a jump up and there are some epic storylines on the way. The Master is one of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis’s
Four amazing episodes in a row
Six in a row, after 42 is all goog
Boom BANGER Boom BANGER Boom BANGER!!!!!
There are Whovians and then there are Whovians who know who The Master is!!!! Lol

Basically jacks power comes from rose who brought him back to life but couldn’t control it so she brought him back forever
Syntell: I caught the Sho-Nuff reference. Wish you guys would bring commentary to The Last Dragon. Rekkai: I saw Time Cop back in the day.
35:04 Christopher Lambert was a different kind of Time Lord.
Yeah, Highlander confused with the 9th, gotta love it
Jack unintentionally got long life from Rose when she had taken in the heart of the Tardis.
The video is called "TIMELAPSE OF THE FUTURE: A Journey to the End of Time"
The time the Doctor and the gang are currently visiting is after what the Melodysheep video refers to as "The Age of Starlight".
13:59 “it’s called ADHD” - oh shit, I never thought of that before 😂😂😂😂. The perception filter was powerful but now I can see. I’ve been a time lord all along…
All I can say is “HERE COME THE DRUMS” 😁😁😁

@@Legendary3Dgamer I don't think this counts as a spoiler when the next episode is literally called "The Sound of Drums", it's barely different to saying "I'm excited for the next episode".
You are my super child my super child
For Jack this is after S1 of Torchwood
The Face of Boe to The Doctor in Gridlock: "You are not alone."
18:24 This was incredible! 🙏🏽💪
Goosebumps was for real
Jack is my oldest niece's favorite Doctor Who character. You can always count on Jack hitting on everything and everyone with two legs.
Derek Jacobi - such a great actor. So much like the first Doctor from 1963.
Captain Jack is one of my Fav characters!
I love how this ties to the Family of Blood episode.
"Utopia" is how cliffhangers should be done.
When watching the intro theme song pay attention to the beat
Been waiting for this one
17:31, there have been Classic and NuWho episodes in which the Doctor meets future incarnations of himself. Some of them are good and some of them are very bad.
I liked The Last Dragon reference you threw into this reaction 🤣😁
This finale is for me, the best in new who... the master reveal and the fob watch blind sided me! I was stunned for a day or two.... outstanding....
Children Of Earth is a work of genius.
