I contacted him through Facebook a couple of years before he passed and asked him a few questions about his playing and offered him some great photos from the tribute tour. Surprisingly he answered me. I think because as a guitarist that cut my teeth on this bands first album and some of the questions were related directly towards how he played a couple of the parts. Nice man, it's a shame he had heart problems that eventually took him. I didn't know he actually had a transplant.
Ed was my best friend at Toll Jr. High and Hoover High in Glendale, Ca in the mid 60's. Refusing to cut his hair kept him out of his senior year at Hoover. I was going to be a concert classical guitarist and he said I'd be famous and not talk to him. The opposite happened. RIP my old friend!
Miss you Ed. my good friend got to meet you recently and i was so jeolous. i play and spent a long time learning your song Sweet Home Alabama note for note with all of your incricies and style, it has made me a better guitarist.. God bless you man, you are an inspiration to all and a joy in my life. Thank You Ed King
That first guitar solo on Sweet Home Alabama at that time was killer so well executed & complimented with that Strat sound ripping thru and still is killer today. I personally learned alot from Ed King on guitar R.I.P. Ed King we shall all meet someday ..God Bless !! GP
Thank you Sharon for taking care of Ed ,despite the the surgery Ed looked Happy and healthy, not a week goes by I don't think of Ed and the fact he was a big part of Lynyrd Skynyrd's history , weather some people may like it or not . Growing up a dummy I never knew Ed's story until I saw some of the documentaries .Although it was just a short time that Ed spent with Skynyrd I think he accomplished a lot and made some good / possibly crucial decisions and even better decisions when it came to buying guitars .
You unintentionally documented something very important for guitarplayers at 0:03 - the correct fingering for Sweet Home Alabama's opening riff. Cool stuff.
I was in Nashville back in November last year, and I walked from my hotel ( The Omni ) to Carter Vintage Guitars not that far away, and I knew Ed lived not that far away either. I had him in my mind for some reason, knowing that he bought from that store, and was fantasizing that maybe he would be in there, but no. Anyway Ed, thank you for not only writing SHA, but also a hand in Whisky Rock a Roller. My all time favourite Skynyrd song RIP Ed' God Bless you.
Ed seems to not have lost a step. Great picker & a greater human being. And their critters are adorable. I know how he feels, cos I have my own & Id be lying if were to say I would be loss without mine. lol Its great to see Ed doing so well. Much love to Ed & his family!!!!
Ed King , I have always loved (and worshiped) the SHA lead solo's #1 #2 plus the Saturday Night Special song . the songs have stood the test of time . ranked equal to one of my other heroes EVH . Ed King is a genuine picker that used hardly any distortion . yet shredded the fretboard.. got the true sound of his axe . a true Strat Man . one of those rare players that seems to get more out of the instrument than most can. God bless you I wish I could meet you .
I live in Tennessee, play guitar in a band, grew up listening to LS and I too have two golden doodles! I call them Wack a Doodles, If I don’t exercise them by noon, I have to give them an exorcism by 3 lol.
Glad to see Ed and the family doing well. I never knew about the heart transplant. I should put my copy of Nuthin Fancy in the car seeing how we both live in Nashville. I can dream can't I?
What a nice man, with a joyful, beautiful, loving family, Not to mention, he was THE best musician in Skynyrd. One of the most underrated guitarists of the rock era....Uncredited for a number one song in America in 1967, as acknowledged by his own band members in the Strawberry Alarm Clock. What a diverse talent, but more importantly a really good human being. We are losing too many of them recently. RIP Ed King. You are, and will be, sorely missed.
Best wishes on your further travels into the Cosmic music, Ed. Thank you for your music that you leave with us, and God bless all of Ed's friends and family.
Hi Ed and family. Thank you for sharing on such a heartfelt level your genuine joy, love of music, life and who you are. Your level of humility blows me away in all you say, do and share. I wish you continued good health wellness and prosperity. My walk in life was continuously tainted by false pride, ego and people pleasing...and Oh yes, mood and mind altering everything. All the gyrations I felt necessary to portray myself as someone I wished to be was totally exhausting After a profound awakening related to a near death experience, I started to re-think what life means on so many different levels.. Self acceptance and walking in faith that Jesus has my back, I can finally discover who I am truly meant to be. Thank you...I think you are the best lead guitar player in the (b)and...I mean land. I saw LS in Jersey City's Roosevelt Stadium in August 1975. I was floored at age 18. Not only surviving but thriving. Keep doing what you love. Don't forget to dream...and don't forget to pray. Tommy G.
As the years go by I lock on to a different Skynyrd song every so often. It used to surprise me most of the songs were written by Ed. Not anymore. I've been listening you Whiskey Rock a Roller every day for the past couple of weeks and I'm getting familiar with Nuthin' Fancy again. Check out 1975 Winterland concert . They open with Whiskey Rock a Roller and Freebird has a solo by Ed King that I'd never seen before. RIP "Big Ed" King.
Ed King was not only a Word Class Guitar player and Songwriter + Ed was a good man - Hope to meet you somewhere on the road , up in the Mountains of Heaven - Guitars blazing - RIP Brother TV
Ed..lve allways wanted to meet star in person n you sir ld travel million miles to shake your hand n chat..you n the band make me feel happy inside sir..l only wish you n family my deepest respect n gratitude for your feel on the strings that allways left me in awe..comin from drummer..thankyou soo much.
Ed wrote the bridge & solo for Incense & Peppermints and never got copyright credit, thankfully he hit it big with Sweet Home Alabama, what a truly sweet man, raaawk on Ed.
True . After he wrote the music the record company took it from him and gave the music to someone to write the lyrics for it. He never got credit for it
I got the chance to meet and hang out with him, his wife and Ollie and Petey. Listened to him play guitar for over an hour. He answered all my questions and autographed everything I asked him to. He is a very humble man. His wife is one of the sweetest people you would ever meet. Those doodles are wild and fun. Ollie is just a kind spirit and Petey is awesome too. Maybe you will meet him one day. I'll never forget it...that's for sure.
He used to have a website and used to respond to fans. People always asked him about being in Skynyrd. He used to like to fish and I posted send us some pictures of your next fishing trip. He did.
I'm in my early 50s and never really was into LS. Sure, I knew SHA, Freebird, and Gimme Three Steps, but that's about it. I also vaguely knew about a plane crash. That was about it. Then I came across the documentary on them (If I leave Here Tomorrow) this fall and it spurred my interest in the band. I've done quite a bit of research and listening and I must say I'm impressed with the whole kit 'n kaboodle. How it relates to this YT video is this: I didn't know anyone in the band at all, and the parts of the documentary that included Ed intrigued me and I assumed he was still around, so I checked out a bunch of vids here and that's how I found out he was no longer with us. It kind of stung a little bit to realize that the movie was three years old and he had died right after it was made. Thank you, Ed, for everything. You did well.
meet Ed in the late seventys at m and m music in Vineland NJ and the late eightys day ather a show at the Philadelphia Spectrum in Dennisvillie New Jersey
He lived nearby on the outskirts of Belleplain(Cedar Bridge Road) and earleir in Cape May Court House(my hometown). He came to Cape May the night he left Skynyrd in 1975. Red Eye, his prized 1959 Les Paul was stolen from the Belleplain property at gunpoint. A family freind, Jay “Chip” Gaskill was good freinds with Ed and had bought 3 guitars from Ed including the famed Black 59 Stratocaster you see in all the old live footage, under the condition he sold it back to Ed when he was done with it which he didn’t. Ed also taught In Wildwood Crest and Somers Point. His Family owned King Nummy Trail campground on Route 47. Ed moved out in the early 90s
You know it's nice to see these guyses lives after fame but the thing I always wanted to know was the ins-and-outs of the music of why they chose this guitar or why they chose this amp how they got a certain sound in a certain song how they adjusted the tone of their guitars and amps and things like that things musicians think of.
Rest in peace Ed 🙏❤🙏 Awesome musician, You wrote the Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern Anthem, and You were from Southern California !! You PROVED yourself to us Southern boys !!!!! You hit it perfectly when it counted, EVERY TIME ❤ Congratulations !! You are NOT forgotten BROTHER !!! Love from New Orleans !!
Ed, It looks like you are enjoying life a LOT more than MONEY POCKETS ROSSINGTON, All my best to you , i hope your health will improve, The Real Skynyrd Fans Do Not want you to leave us , Cheers Brother, Cousin Figel
lucky for Ed his guitar tech wasnt able to change his strings before a concert in Houston. Ed broke a couple of strings during Free Bird, which got Ronnie really pissed. After a huge argument between them, Ed packed his stuff and left the band. Probably the best decision he ever made in his life.
wingnutt4200 most are up for sale at Carter Vintage guitar in Nashville. A few are being given to family freinds or are still in the house awaiting their future
Actually, dogs have clean mouths, and there are old stories that it's a good thing to have a dog lick a wound because the dog's saliva will help supress infection. I know, many people are just disgusted about the idea of the thing, but it's mostly harmless.
This guy Ed King is the greatest - great guitar player and really warm personality! Wish I knew him personally.
Nazmo King he seriously comes across as genuine and a big heart 📢🔊🎺🎸

R.I.P. Ed! I sure miss your sense of humor.
I've always loved Ed Kings guitar work but anyone who lets a dog kiss them in the mouth is not all there in the head.
Actually, dogs have clean mouths, and there are old stories that it's a good thing to have a dog lick a wound because the dog's saliva will help supress infection. I know, many people are just disgusted about the idea of the thing, but it's mostly harmless.
Keep Ollie away from the damn fire!
