    I knew Blue Velvet wouldn't be too long before Criterion upgraded it, it's a popular title. I never bought the BluRay specifically because I was holding out for the 4k. Bound & Victims Of Sin are exciting announcements. Victims Of Sin especially which has never been easy to come by to see certainly not in good quality & English subtitles for it aren't easy to find either, I imagine that will be a new discovery for a lot of people & it deserves some light shining on it because it's a fantastic film with a beautiful story & very moving final third.

    I was expecting that one of David Lynch's criterion bluray releases was going to be getting a 4K upgrade in July. I own all of them and out of all of them, Blue Velvet probably needs 4K the least, relatively - it looks outstanding. But I'm still excited to grab the upgrade.
    This is the nature of the game. Anyone collecting just has to weigh likelihoods when a bluray doesn't have a 4K yet. It's been like 5yrs+ since the Blue Velvet bluray came out

    I literally just got the Blue Velvet Blu-ray imported. Yh I'm not gonna upgrade this because the 4k will look only marginally better and the blu-ray looks great anyway. This is the main problem with being in the UK as basically I have to be careful what I order and import because once I have a release from another country like the US then it's not like I can take it to CEX get somethin and then be able to upgrade it, I am just stuck with it and without going through the trouble of setting up an ebay account and trying to offload it then I can't get any money back from it and I am stuck with keeping it in my collection taking up space, so I can't really justify upgrading stuff that I import really.
    I am much more likely to upgrade something to 4k if the previous release i have is a UK release so I can just take it to CEX. It is super annoying. I wish that consumers in the UK weren't so stupid that CEX wouldn't do a Imported section. Cos how nice it would be for collectors to be able to buy and sell used US blurays, but despite how thoroughly explained to some people that would inevitably just lead to more issues than it is worth as general consumers will just buy them and then they wont work on their players. It is funny because occasionally I do see some US releases in some random CEX shops, even region a locked ones, im not really sure how that happened. Is weird that even imported stuff from Europe so its still region b CEX wont bother with either.
    But yh basically importing is a risk and I am stuck with what I get. Like I got the original Child's Play trilogy 4k a year ago from Shout Factory and then I have got the Arrow 4k set recently because getting the whole set was actually cheaper than getting the other 4 imported it turns out, but now I am just stuck with Childs Play 2 & 3 4ks that I just have but can't do anything with. And theres a couple of others that I got as well like the Psycho 4 Blu-ray that got replaced by the Arrow 4k boxset that I have on a shelf here that I can't get rid of.

    On Criterion's Twitter they shared what looks to be screencaps from their Fear and Loathing 4k. There's an orange tint going on in the color grade which I'm thinking is revisionist to how the film is supposed to look. I'm happy keeping with my Arrow release until more comes out on that.

    I’m very happy that Blue Velvet is getting a UHD upgrade. The Blu-ray has video encoding issues in several key scenes with macroblocking in the shadows. It’s an opportunity for Criterion to fix this on the 4K disc, although NexSpec/Pixelogic or whoever does their encodes don’t have a great track record, especially with some recent titles. Having just purchased the blu-ray of Blue Velvet about a month ago....I laughed when I received the Criterion email announcing the June 2024 4K releases. I'll probably trade-in my blu-ray copy to a local shop at some point but I'm in no rush to pick up the 4K (which is still 3 months out, so that may change).
    Question for you: Have you done any coverage or analysis of 4K players? I've been using my PS5 but the pass-through of the single HDMI out really affects the sound quality. I think I'm going to look into a proper 4K player but wasn't sure where to begin. As always, thanks for your input and the time you put into these videos. Cheers!

    • @ShanghaiRooster
      @ShanghaiRooster 3 месяца назад

      If you look at it from a point of view that they're upgrading films first where they already have a 4K master ready (same as Arrow really) then it makes sense, even if it's frustrating for fans of certain films not to see those getting the treatment. Making a 4K master is far more costly than one for regular blu-ray, so they'd also have to consider whether the cost is financially viable for a film that might only have a small fanbase.

      The original 35mm camera negative was scanned in 4K resolution at Company 3, Burbank. The film was restored in 4K resolution and colour graded in HDR/Dolby Vision by LSP Medien, Uelzen. The Blue Velvet upgrade is very welcome because for some reason criterion decided to put the film and all the specials on one disc… which is insane and completely unnecessary…
    there is so much stuff on this… several hours in HD so the bitrates are lower than necessary to reproduce the grain structure proerly. The 50minutes of deleted scenes had higher bittates on the old mgm blu ray and it shows…
    So now with the new 4k at least the film will be properly encoded. With the proper bitrate it deserves…

    I have to say that's a rather negative spin on blue velvet.i have the blu ray and the 4k remaster was spectacular. To the point that it beats out alot of actual 4ks I own.i have absolutely no problem with them using thar remaster.i own alot of 4ks that use the same remaster as previously released blu rays and are night and day on a dedicated 4k disc because the film now has room to breathe and the hdr/ dolby vision as,we know can add so much more depth to the image ,even more so in alot of cases than resolution. So if encode and bit rate are good.blue velvet will look spectacular of that I have no doubt. As does mulholland drive and lost highway

    • @ElliotCoen
      @ElliotCoen  3 месяца назад

      Not that negative of a spin really. You're absolutely right - the blu-ray IS spectacular. The UHD will provide room for improvement but it cannot be that big. 99% of people that own the current Criterion blu-ray will see no reason to upgrade, I can guarantee. This is not like a dated HD master being upgraded with a new 4K restoration, like Criterion's Branded to Kill 4K, which was a night and day difference in quality.
