    I know the power crystal had a purpose (questioning whether it was needed was me making a funny, don't take it seriously). It's implied it's from Glimmer, which is where the original superportal that Spyro came through was located. What I was referring to was the Professor's implication that the Winter Tundra portal was not working at all, which is of course not true.

      I was thinking about it recently, and I realized the same thing. By not allowing Ripto to return to wherever it was he came from and shutting down the portal afterwards, they effectively let him take over Avalar. Also, it seems to me that Zoe seemed to know about Ripto prior to his arrival, as she's the one (I'm pretty sure) that informs Elora when Hunter enters the coordinates that lead to his arrival

    Just like with Spyro 3, I feel like the orbs should have just been the only collectible in Spyro 2 seeing as the Talismans don't do anything except in so far as opening doors.
    In terms of storytelling, Ripto does not impact the plot unlike Gnasty Gnorc and The Sorceress do because he's never once mentioned outside the hub worlds causing trouble. And as far as we know, Avalar was tearing itself to pieces without him even being there.

    • @MelancholyJoker19
      @MelancholyJoker19 4 года назад +5

      My theory on that is a bit of both Avalar being somewhat hostile towards each other and Ripto making a mess before Spyro came to town.
      Remember he has the scepter up until Spyro came to Glimmer when Zoe attacked him. Based on how he acts, its safe to say he can't do magic without a sceptor. My guess is that maybe some areas where not too hostile but after Ripto came along things got worse and overall became a mess, which is why when Spyro comes around there's shit going on

    • @heartless2147

      @@MelancholyJoker19 Very true in cases like Idol Springs and Colossus, in the manual for Spyro 2 it says Ripto was using magic to bring Tikis to life and summon evil spirits among other things. The evil spirit from the orb challenge has to be the same one mentioned in the manual, it's evil causing all the goats and yaks to become hostile and the Yeti to terrorize the monks. The Tikis only came to life recently, the cutscene shows when they first came to life. Ripto must've brought them to life before heading to Glimmer where he would lose his scepter.
      Aside from those two instances, a lot of the problems in Avalar seem to be from locals taking advantage of all the heat being put on Ripto to do there own plans. The Gear Grinders were always trouble for the Electrolls for example, only thing different now is that they're using smarter tactics like electric gates. Whether that was just them figuring it out or Ripto allying with them to get lightning stones for Gulp's cannons and informing them of those tactics is up in the air. The Sunny Beach/Aquatic Towers situation with the Water Workers and Duck Chef is a similar issue. Are they kidnapping/cooking baby turtles and draining Aquatic Towers for their own plans or did Ripto hire them to build a resort for him out of the locals' homes and serve the aquatic citizens as a meal for when he conquers Avalar? But then there are coincidences like in Mystic Marsh with Snoozle or Robotica Farms/Metropolis. Avalar is the most chaotic world in the trilogy.

    I always figured while Ripto didn't cause the unrest in Avalar, but his being there caused the existing unrest to get alot worse. Like in any time of crisis it often causes existing issues to become magnified because suddenly you're adding struggle on top of more struggle.
    As for the Talismans, since the means to get to the Smmer Forest Autumn Castles required them, I guess what Elora meant was they'd be needed to make sure Ripto had nowhere to run to and become inaccessible. So in that way they were needed to defeat Ripto since without them Spyro couldn't reach Ripto.
    As for the Orbs...Yeah, I could totally buy Elora didn't mention they were used for the Super Portal BECAUSE Spyro was the only means to defeat Ripto. And he hadn't planned on coming to Avalar and wanted to go to the Dragon Shores. Shady, sure, but I can see why she would hide the Orbs use from Spyro, it was do or die basically.
    But yeah I am willing to agree with you development time constraints are why the plot has these issues.

    For the orbs, my theory is that initially they had much more of those than after Gulp's defeat, and that the few they recovered weren't enough, hence needing the power crystal.
    That being said, though, they could have at least shown the difference, having the flashbacked portal equipped with much more orbs. Plus there are still glaring questions about Ripto. What world did he come from? How did he get his initial sceptre? How did he get Crush and Gulp? Why does he hate dragons?

    • @MiharuTheFox
      @MiharuTheFox  4 года назад +3

      I can answer one of those. The manual states he stole that initial scepter, from who or what we don't know, but that's at least something. Many people believe he hates dragons because they picked on him in school, but the manual doesn't say it was dragons who bullied him specifically.

Until the end of the game, the superportal was never used to access the dragon world, only Ripto's world. The Professor said that they'd be better off using the Glimmer portal to catch a dragon. Plot in the original trilogy was more like an excuse to develop solid games than something we should focus on, like in most of the games in the Platform genres, especially in the '90s. We just ask ourselves way too many questions about the story.
    By the way, the Talismans are not more important than orbs, but they were considered as "the essential"; Elora looked quite convinced that was all they needed in order for Spyro to defeat Ripto and then they could have brought enough orbs by themselves, since they had the fairies and most of the people around Avalar on their side, but then they were proven wrong; Ripto showed up, took that Crystal and therefore they needed orbs too and Spyro had to go through more trouble. Yay.

    Ripto was no powerhouse, he was a schemer. He knew Dragons>Rhynocs and his plan was to delay Spyro from reaching him by convincing the citizens to turn on each other. Which is why you see Birds vs. Blubbers, Wizards vs. Cavemen, and Earthshapers vs. everyone.
    After Gulp ate his scepter, Ripto needed a magic artifact strong enough to fight a dragon. That’s because Dragons have natural (amazing) magic ability and Rhynocs rely on other (outer?) sources for magic.

    I still do think Ripto is Spyro's best villain and considering he pretty much became Spyro's Bowser in a sense I do see where Ripto would be good in that sense. Since he's really the only villain who has any sort of beef with Spyro. My problem is that it doesn't get established all that well. Not to mention how distant the narrative tends to be. One thing that I always question was how Elora explained the player's objectives.
    She states you need all 14 Talismen to defeat Ripto and then brushes off Orbs as if its suppose to be a side collectable later. For a first timer you wouldn't know Orbs are important until you get to Winter Tundra when Elora decides to say "Now you need Orbs to encounter Ripto".. That's really poor structure on the sight of the developers. Its also contradicted by flashbacks where you obviously see Elora, Hunter, The Professor and Zoe working the super portal generated by the orbs. So the story gives them more importance the moment you enter Crush's dungeon explaining how Ripto even got to Avalar. Then what is really the point of Tailsmen? They literally play no impact whatsoever. Even Orbs impact the final battle. Speaking of how he got there why didn't they just wait until Ripto went back into the portal to pack his stuff then shut down the portal?
    Also the moment Ripto falls off the edge after your battle with Gulp he's instantly declared as "dead" just a split second after he falls off Elora just says "there's no sign of Ripto" only then to cut to the next scene and he attacks all of them with Bombs right when they all begin preparing the super portal. If you know what you're doing you can pretty much collect all orbs in advance, but for a first timer you'd instantly have to collect orbs the moment the game tells you their importance, which isn't until the final hub world. You don't even need all of them to encounter Ripto.
    As far as story goes Ripto only harasses the main characters, but holds no power over Avalar at all. None of the world's inhabitants are connected to him in anyway. In fact all of their problems are self contained. Its honestly sad how Enter the Dragonfly he actually impacts the story and that game is really bad. lol I still do like Ripto and Spyro 2, as I do think it has the best final battle in the trilogy, but I wouldn't lie and say it was my least favorite other than Spyro 1 original.

    • @heartless2147
      @heartless2147 4 года назад +1

      Ripto brought the Tikis to life in Idol Springs and summoned the evil spirit in Colossus that made the animals hostile and the Yeti terrorize the monks. That was all shown in the manual for Spyro 2, the other zones are pretty much self contained though, I'll give you that. I find it more interesting that we have a world like Avalar in Spyro. Usually everything is normal until a villain messes everything up like Gnasty Gnorc or a villain is terrorizing a normally peaceful place and we have to stop them like the Sorceress. Avalar is that grey area where Ripto is not the main cause of everything wrong in the world. Avalar had bad elements before Ripto showed up and all the heat being focused on him allowed those bad elements to do their own plans. If we had dialogue from the npcs on seeing Ripto talking with the enemies or maybe him involved with the cutscenes, we could've had Ripto confirmed best antagonist by allying himself with the local bad elements to take over Avalar.

    • @DJCosmicLatte
      @DJCosmicLatte 4 года назад

      Well, what it boils down to is classic cartoon logic. Villains gonna villain, and their motives and methods don't really have to make sense in the big picture because your average child player (and even adult players who don't think too hard about it) are focused on the action in the moment. This guy is bad, this is how to beat him, let's go. Rinse and repeat.

    At this point Miharu should make a collab video with Lore of the Dragon on the Avalar situation. They could go into canon, headcanon and remake the story of Spyro 2 into something more cohesive. I'd be down for that, I still think Ripto gets so little credit on his villainy. Yes he didn't actively cause chaos in Avalar that much aside from Idol Springs, Colossus and destroying the bridge, but whose to say he didn't ally with the local bad elements of Avalar to help his conquest? How did Gulp get that Lightning Cannon aside from being fueled by Lightning Stones that the Gear Grinders were stealing and made by those same Gear Grinders? That's multiple videos at the least.

    My honest guess was that after Gulp ate the Sceptor, Elora thought once Spyro defeat Crush and Gulp, Ripto would be gone for good, or at least useless without it.
    Makes sense with how the preemptively celebrate Ritpo's demise after Gulp is defeated. So with that in mind the Talismans were used to defeat Ripto, but not directly as she made it seem... Only issue is that Elora was predicting this by what happened and not by thinking of a backup idea. This also ties why Ripto doesn't seem to do anything in Spyro 2 until the end. He doesn't have his source of power.
    Even though the orbs were for getting Spyro home, she wanted Spyro to focus on Ripto and defeating him rather than trying to get home. Makes sense, even if its misleading on her end. As for the Power Crystal, remember how they went to Glimmer to get Spyro? The Professor said something along the lines of it being a better zone to warp a dragon. The crystal was use to make it possible for Spyro to go back home from Winter Tundra rather than Glimmer.

    Here's probably the biggest thing that doesn't make sense about Spyro 2. Dragon Shores. 1st it's run by Gnorcs who were supposed to be the
    dragons arch-enemy at the time. 2nd the ommision fee not only asks for an absurd amount of Gems (That kind of which would make
    Money Bags flush in jealously) it asks for a mass collection of orbs which means if Spyro never went to Avalar his adventure
    would've stopped right than and there. Also that means the Gnorcs know about Avalar!
    This is probably because of it's current connection to Avalar but I find it mighty strange that Dragon Shores despite being
    in the Dragon Realms nearly has zero elements from the previous Spyro game.
    Than the coaster! The Coaster an monsterous legal nightmare! Not only are the carts equipped with cannons later, and the
    other carts go in the direct opposing side to Spyro, but they chose to leave the Turtle Baby's out on the tracks
    to be run over! There's also the question of how the creepy scary french chef who's in the dunking station is somehow
    also in the Tunnel of Love of which Spyro can Somehow end up in the same cart as.
    (Sure ERSB. Censor the Buddist statues but leave Dragon-Pedo-Chef in!)
    Lastly I know this is petty but I find it unuasly cruel and evil that the last target's in that shooting mini-game are Baby
    Lizards. So we're okay with saving other Baby Reptiles but Lizards just deserve to die for some reason?
    The place was so amoral I"m shocked it wasn't all a trap set up by Gnasty Gnorc himself.

He did but a few dragons would take gnasty homeworld and named it the dragon kingdoms. They then took azmaron and sealed him in a statue with special relics. Gnasty gnirc would use this technology later on. So after spyro 3 you and friends are at dragon shore, agent zero tells spyro since he's a secret agent he is to be sent on a new mission. This begins the next chapter. In the epilogue you see gnasty and ripto conspiring a new plan. So they kidnap the professor to undo the statue and free azmaron. Azmaron notices ripto due to him being from a level called riptoc village. So he kicks him out. Gnasty would be used as the fourth homeworld boss. So your mission in like every game collect the relics to find the professor and seal azmaron once and for all.

    Speaking of not going to get his luggage, why didn't they turn off portal once Ripto sent Crush through the portal?

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 4 года назад +1

      ........Because Crush never actually went through the portal. If you re-watch the cutscene, you can clearly see Ripto berating Crush for NOT going through the portal, calling him an idiot when he doesn't.

    That's what always confused me about this game is that she always says there's 14 talismans but actually there's 22 but none of which where used to beat ripto, always confused me

  • @shawn_7413
    @shawn_7413 4 года назад

    Well technically the talismans were the most important thing Spyro needed at the beginning of the adventure. Without them he couldn't even get to the point where they would need orbs. Plus orbs were basically useless story-wise until the final battle. Orb requirements to proceed through the game were insanely low. That kinda shows they didnt really have much of an affect on the world unlike eggs in Spyro 3.
    No one expected Ripto to be such a coward that he locked himself in the castle. So orbs were only needed to send Spyro home which they werent concerned over until he defeated Ripto.

      @shawn_7413 4 года назад

      I still wish we got more story tho. Like why were worlds fighting with each other and what was Riptos plan besides being a house squatter? Like the majority of enemies Ripto had no part of making they just already existed in Avalar. Which did he create besides tikis? They didnt seem to join Ripto either. It seems like the only worlds Ripto really caused havoc in were the homeworlds.

    See, even though I still think Reignited Spyro 2 is better than the original, there were definitely some missed opportunities to alter and fix the story a little. I mean yeah its a remaster but if they can get away with redesigning pretty much 80 of the dragons in the first one, a little story update wouldn't really be that drastic. I guess my theory is, Elora wanted Ripto out of the picture first before getting to the orbs to help Spyro get back or something but eh. Great vid Miharu!

  • @TheOneTrueTMan

    I do think there's perhaps a bit of purpose to gathering the talismans. Since the talismans are basically symbols for their worlds, having them in one place represents Avalar becoming harmonious again, and maybe that's the only way to defeat the Big Bad.
    With Spyro 2, I think most of the effort went into the conflicts of the portal worlds themselves. The main narrative was always just cheesy set dressing, mostly, even if the characters are fun. Funnily enough, Spyro 3 took the opposite approach, with a more developed main story and less important subplots in the portal worlds. I kinda prefer Spyro 2's worldbuilding to be honest, but both have their advantages and disadvantages.

    It’s so strange cuz Ripto is iconic yet this game’s plot is beyond jarring. I probably still love Spyro 2 the most out of the trilogy due to all the oozing charm and fun level design, but it sure has its glaring flaws especially when pitted against the design of Spyro 1, even if it were more simplistic then!

  • @Xehanort107
    @Xehanort107 4 года назад

    Surprising there's no comment about Elora's sly comment right before you fight Ripto. She blatantly questions Spyro's loyalty as to whether or not Spyro is willing to fight Ripto, sounding like you have the choice of betraying them and abandoning them all to slavery in Riptonia.
    I mean, I know Spyro is kinda fussy about not having a vacation, but he seemed more than willing to tussle with Ripto. So why the question of loyalty right there at the gate to the final boss? It just feels... like a missed opportunity.

    • @MiharuTheFox
      @MiharuTheFox  4 года назад +1

      That never sounded like a question of loyalty to me, it sounds more like she's nervous that Spyro might not make it out alive. And her saying "Right? Right?" was most likely just a joke based on how Spyro can't respond to in-game dialogue. It's not like she asked "Are you sure you wanna do this?"

    This right here shows more examples why
    Spyro needs New Games With Effort and New terms of Quality
    Again They should add in Spyro’s Free Flight Ability anytime any level without Limitations and in New Upgrade able qualities
    In Spyro’s New game
    Yeah yeah flying isn’t platforming
    But Hello Spyro is a Dragon he has Wings he should actually use them
    Toys For Bob have Creative Developers
    They could Research and Invent a purpose for Spyro to keep his Unlimited Fly Time
    I’m simply speaking on behalf of Spyro Fans that prefers keeps Jis Free Flight Ability
    Though still taking time to convince Toys For Bob’s Developers ? And how they contact them ?

    When do Spyro games ever make sense? They're 3D Platformers about a dragon saving different worlds from gnorcs, rhynocs, magic crafters, beast makers, evil sorcerers and so many other evil doers. I never take 3d Platformers very seriously due to them mostly being targeted for a younger audience and the fact that their designed more about gameplay and fun rather than a complex story like Red dead redemption 2 which is a fun game too. Let's just enjoy Spyro for his platforming fun and not his story.

      @@SinisterServal In my opinion, both storytelling and gameplay are important, but the latter still needs to be front and center if they want it to do well. Having said that, it's always been the main reason why I liked the game so much; it's just plain fun! There's also a lot that makes me crack up, so that's a bonus, too.
