CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jackson (Barry Pepper) once again displays his sniper skills, until a tank takes aim at his bell tower.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944.

One of the many things that i feel is a great part of this scene is that you actually see him miss a couple of shots... gives you the feeling that he is still human and is not perfect.
yeah, he hits that perfect midpoint, extreme competent, without sacrificing believability, makes the hits feel more impressive because they're not a guarantee.
I saw this at the cinema when it came out and I remember thinking the same thing - the director wasn't scared to leave in messy details that someone else would have cut out. It's like the long pause when they're flushing the Germans out of the bunker near the beginning. Another director wouldn't have bothered.
Besides,he is fighting a desperate fight here against the germans so is normal to miss.
That's why it's amongst the top 5 if not the BEST war film ever made
@@Kay-18-i7n I think it's the best just because of how many veterans have praised it as realistic
The greatest thing about Jackson is that the first thing he does when he sees danger is not to save himself but to warn his friend.

He warned his friend because he knew he was doomed.

If you guys are wondering why he kept on missing in the end, I found this on reddit: "In Saving Private Ryan [1998], Jackson uses two scopes (Ureti 8x scope on the left, M73B 2.5x scope on the right) and swaps between them regularly. This results in his Ureti 8x being 'unzeroed', which causes It to be inaccurate, resulting in Jackson missing a lot of his shots later on."
Ah that makes sense.
Why would he use two scopes? Why would he use a scope that becomes inaccurate?
@@hexagonalawareness3584 Differences in zoom, 8x brings the target a lot closer that 2.5x, but 2.5x is better for closer ranged targets since the 8x would be fuzzy at close ranges

@King Krogo Yeah it would be if he was there by choice. But seeing as most were drafted to go fight over there, he probably didn't want to kill them, but had to in order to protect the ones he loves and his fellow soldiers.

Just watched this movie today, one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. Jackson was my favorite character. So unfortunate he had to go out that way.
Mind when shot the German sniper through the scope, a thing of beauty
From 1:52 to 1:57 you can see in his face expressions a mix of rage and inner thoughts that he won't see his family never again.
He clearly knows that he's not coming back home but still fighting and trying his best.
Props to Barry Pepper for simulating the recoil of his 03 Springfield. Blanks definitely do not give that much kick, so he had to purposefully do that. Made it much more realistic and believable.
What if they weren’t blanks 😂
Plot twist:they weren't blanks
@@familygroves34 😂
They were probably real bullets and he just was shooting them at a wall or something. Then they added the scope view for the movie
Left handed shooter - using left thumb over technique on a standard sniper issue Springfield-authentic technique - best I’ve seen on a screen.
I still consider him to be one of the greatest snipers in movie history
Gaming Moments
Nope, the second. The first one is Vasily (Enemy at the gates)
Wtf a random american sniper that kills a couple of germans at close calls is now better than Chris Kyle and Vasili Zaitsev and many more that I am forgeting.
Arrows are love Chris Kyle is a confirmed liar, therefore you don't know what to believe regarding his tales.

The craziest part about this scene is that dude realized that he didn’t have have enough time to get out in less than a second and instead tried to warn his fellow brother who may have had enough time to survive, true hero.
That’s what it’s all about!
No, the craziest part is that he knew he would be done for, if he kept firing, once the tank rolled up - and made the choice to keep picking off enemies to help save his unit from the enemy infantry rush.
The last shout he made just further proved how committed he was to his unit.
His heroic act wasn't the final shout he made, it was his decision to pick off enemy infantry that were advancing on his unit, sacrificing himself to the Tank spotter who would quickly find him, and order the deployment of a High Explosive shell right at him.
That part pissed me off more than tom hanks death. That dude was a kick ass sniper man.

I love this scene so much. Jackson is scared absolutely shitless, hence his recital of bible verses to feel closer to God, but he’s not cowering whatsoever, he’s doing his job like a well oiled machine. Great character, I was seriously bummed when he died.
Well said, it really humanises the characters in the film. They’re fighting for their lives, but their training allows them to complete their mission, at the cost of their lives though.
Doesn’t he always recite the bible before taking a shot?
@@mooseking7545 Yes, everytime.

This is probably one of the most realistic depictions of a real Christian in film.
Trying to survive on a brutal battlefield calling on God in every fight, knowing someday - you'll see him soon.

I was really bummed when they killed the young sniper dude. He was cool
RIP Pvt Jackson
I know right, he made me want to be a sniper :(
Me too he made me wanna be a badass
A sniper at the radar tower that didn't climb a tree and take a shot?
he died a hero
Most powerful part of this scene is Jackson reciting “Psalms 144”.
I first thought it was Psalm 18 which is very close so I just assumed he was saying it wrong or as close as he could remember. Then I read 144 and it's word for word. My question is, why was he then not delivered from his enemy? I assume no real significance to the fact that he's reciting a Psalm most of which were said or sung to demonstrate faith and to help protect the faithful. Clearly this one didn't work for Jackson, lol. I'd be curious to hear what Spielberg would say about that line.
the sniper moment was so badass that even the war itself was silenced just so we could watch him.
for u to get some jackson's POV? you are focus on the enemy , and u been in a fight like 10 mins or so , the gunshot sounds has become white noise , thats my way of this scene
Pretty cool observation actually. I like to take it as if Jackson was so in the zone that every other sound was blocked out of his senses.

I had an elderly neighbor over for dinner around the time this was out on rental. The topic of the movie came up, and I warned him about the opening scene and how brutal it was. He told me, "I don't need to watch it, I lived it." Man...it hit me like a gut punch. I can't imagine experiencing that...
It seems like a lot of people had an elderly neighbor who said the same quote...who knew?!

I knew a guy who was a Vietnam vet. I asked him if he'd seen Platoon. He said no and he wouldn't. If he was inaccurate, why bother and if it was, he didn't need to re experience it.
Jackson missing the shots at the end was a telling point that he knew he was close to death. Him and Parker put up a huge fight in the bell tower, but I feel like they knew they were trapped up there and started to panic with the numbers of German soldiers, just shooting off rounds in the open and not using his act of being hidden anymore. Scary scene

@@lemmonox it's near impossible because the barrel of the tank is perfectly straight, so to hit the shell , IT NEEDS TO BE PERFECTLY ALIGNED WITH YOUR GUN, OR ELSE IT WILL MISS THE SHELL
Besides im pretty sure shooting a bullet at the shell will not have it explode.
That split second of horror Miller feels at knowing Jackson is gone is harrowing. He forced to put it out of his mind seconds later to keep fighting but that split second is so, so powerful. It's a combination of shocked helplessness and dreadful certainty.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. Jackson never gave Miller any problems and seemed to never question his decisions like some of the other soldiers. When he saw that explosion he knew that his most stable, loyal, and fearsome soldier was no longer in play. Miller had an endearing love for him and that brief look of shock says it all.
@@nikeflight17 Well said.
It was sad for captain miller to have seen one of his best soldiers die 😢
I was in awe when I realized that once the .30 cal machine gun ran dry, Jackson IMMEDIATELY filled in and engaged the enemy with his Springfield. The bravery of doing this - filling in for a suppressing fire-intended, automatic weapon with a bolt action rifle, is incredibly brave. It took me many times of watching this movie to grasp that personally.
I guess there is a psychological aspect to suppressing fire too right? Like if Jackson shoots two soldiers with his rifle that he might have halted an entire platoon from advancing.
Blessed be the Lord my strength, which teaches my hands to war, and my fingers to fight.
My goodness and my fortress... my high tower and my Deliverer.

Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. Snipers cardinal rule: "Never fire more than 3 shots from a single position!" That's why he got killed because tank crew was able to figure out his location.
@Kar Lead that prayer says a lot about exactly that.
His duty was to shoot as many enemies as he could not of thinking how to escape. All of them knew that it was likely to be their last stand.

The camera work of this film was literally ahead of its time. It looks it could be a new film and not from 1998.
They took a lot of inspiration from the combat scenes in Dr. Strange Love, if you get a chance, check it out, the camera work on the MG firing down on troops is very very similar to the bunker shots in Saving Private Ryan. And the combat footage at the base has a lot of shaky cam handheld shots.
@@NeoDragonKnight perfectly said. Spielberg was inspired by war documentary footage and from Kubrick’s camera work during Burpelson Air Force Base attack scenes from
Dr Strangelove. He told Stanley during one of their lengthy conversations.

So glad someone mentioned this! I'm right handed but am left eye dominant. I learned to shoot the same way.
Interestingly a lot of people use offhand rifles, although this is a bad example. A lefty would use a right handed rifle so he can keep his finger on the trigger and load with the right. Similarly rights use left handed rifles. You also get to keep looking down the sights if done properly

@The Senate Wade was badass to but we didn’t see him much
I think he's the smartest and the most educated in the squad (with the exception of captain Muller, of course). The speech he makes about their mission being "a misallocation of resources" is very eloquent and extremely convincing. That's why captain Muller uses it as an example to tease Reiben, who's always nagging but in a far less inspired and more tedious manner. Besides, it's common knowledge that more educated somebody is the better and the more effective soldier he makes.
I like how he is more life educated than academically.
I believe the Captain was more educated academically because he's said he was a teacher before.
I don’t think Jackson was educated in the normal sense. If you recall when they’re looking through dog tags for Ryan he doesn’t read well and thought Rienne was their guy. My guess he got most of his education from Church and had a very good memory of the sermons.
@@Bulls520
In the initial script of the film it's stated that Pvt. Jackson is from West Fork, Tennessee, and that his father is a preacher. Makes total sense. As for the misreading, it's probable he was also dyslexic.
Jackson is intelligent, but not necessarily educated. It's possible to be a very intelligent person with very little education. And someone can be very educated but have low intelligence. It's very possible for someone like Reiben to have more education than someone like Jackson. But having more education doesn't necessarily mean you have better critical thinking and deduction skills. This is why people shouldn't be too swayed because of someones degree. Yes getting a degree requires a level of intelligence and work ethic. (And clearly they are qualified to discuss things in their field) But it doesn't automatically mean they have good discernment about other topics.

Fun fact: Jackson wasn’t a sniper. He was a designated marksman. They’re an integral (organic) part of a fire team/unit. Snipers are typically SpecOps operators who work solo or with a secondary colleague; a spotter if you will.
@Aquisha Ayen FRANCISCO which part?
@Aquisha Ayen FRANCISCO
Designated marksmen are used to supplement a squad by providing accurate fire on the enemy from distances out to a max distance of 1,800-1,950’ away. Usually there’s a need for repeated shots. Because of that, the DM is usually equipped with a scoped semi-automatic rifle called a designated marksman rifle (DMR). Similar to snipers, DMs are trained in scouting and precise shooting, but unlike the more specialized "true" sniper (who often operate independently), they operate as an intrinsic part of an infantry fireteam and are tasked to lay down accurate support fire at valuable targets as per tactical necessity, thus extending the reach of the fireteam.
He's a sniper ffs
@@Erwin_Von_Heidenheim I'll dumb it down for ya. Both DM and snipers are sharpshooters. But the former operates as a part of a squad alongside other infantry soldiers while the latter only operates alone or with another sniper (in such case, the other sniper is given a role called 'spotter'.) Role of a sniper usually is to eliminate high profile targets or to suppress enemy movement by pushing them into covers. But DM are given more diverse roles as they are often forced to roll with the punches in rapidly changing situation in battlefield.

this was the most tragic scene in the whole movie. No, really, think about it.
He lost his nerve for the first time in his career, missed his target, and was then killed in action.

After the miss he fired two more shots, we don't know the result of those.
The interesting thing to me is that once he stopped praying, he got killed.
Not only do you not see the result of the last 2 shots, where do you see a loss of nerve? He is viciously fighting the entire time. He didn't panic when he saw the tank, what's he going to do? He's a favorite of mine too. I've read that he had the most awesome childhood, travelling the world with his family by boat.
He didn't die. He just got blown out of Saving Private Ryan into the future where he landed in We Were Soldiers.
you forgot he played russian sniper mitka in painted bird.
No, after this he joined the marine corps in flags of our fathers.
Nah, he’s an immortal Army Ranger and fights with Sgt Foley and Ramirez in MW2.
No no no he got blown into the past and became Lucky Ned Pepper and got killed by a Texas Ranger named Lebeouf.
Actually, I think he got pushed back to the 30s, where he became a prison guard for death row.
Private Jackson was the most badass fighter from them all!!! R.I.P Jackson!
"He doesn't relocate. A sniper who doesn't relocate is unnatural."
-Vasily Zaitsev, "Enemy at the Gates"
He he wasn’t given orders to leave the tower they were defending the bridge when Vasily operated in Stalingrad he was playing cat and mouse with other German snipers
Thank you Bob Lee Swagger
He's holding out a line you idiot.
He's not a sniper but a marksman
Well this is a defensive......so it figures
Best Barry Pepper performance.
*61 wins for me
Seen this movie over 20 times. I will never get bored of this master piece 👌🏼
Me too!
I cried when Jackson went down. I almost didn't finish the movie after that.
this movie was so realistic, to the sounds, characters, guns, and smoke coming off of the bodies, especially the wounds, great movie and steven spielberg did a great job
Something about how this movie conveys war just hits so hard. Like every bullet feels like a jumpscare. And when people get hit - they go down instantly.
Utterly terrifying.
I think it's the sound design (it won an oscar for it's sound if I'm not mistaken)... it's get the sound right -- in detail -- and that makes it immersive.
Spielberg wasn’t bullshitting when he shot this film. Well done and full marks all ‘round 👌
I love the fact that Barry Pepper (the sniper) played with Tom Hanks in this movie. The following year, he was with him again in The Green line.
Barry Pepper is one of those wonderfully talented people who rarely get talked about.
As soon as I saw the tank lock on while I was watching this movie, my heart sank
haha ikr same here.. i was like " NOO-"
Yep pretty much...."he is f**ked"
Capt miller was shocked to see jackson getting nailed in the tower. Miller knew jackson was a key man to signal about enemies positions and to take out potential threats that other ground men can't see.
When Jackson‘s phone rings in the cinema, they pause the movie.
Though it doesn't really show it here. You can see after he's killed that Captain Miller looks up and for a second is heart broken because he knows he lost another one of his men. The biggest burden he holds throughout this whole film is keeping his men alive and each one he loses absolutely crushed him. Especially on this particular mission where he struggles to justify the loss of his guys to save one man.
"I'm out of .30 caliber"
Then whats that belt of brass hanging out the left of your 1919?
CandyHam Either minor bad edit or conserving it for later.
that an Jackson shot 8 times
+CandyHam that was the emptied "clip" it was the belt the bullets were on
+John Dennis You can see the rounds still in the belt...
they were empty casings on the belt
2:01 the international signal of "you're fucked"
😂
It's a little defeating when you realize Tom Hanks has several hand grenades on his person throughout the entire battle and doesn't use any.
He did?
I always got goosebumps when Jackson would recite verses from the Bible when he faced his enemies. He was, and still is my favourite character in the movie.
This scene changed me forever. Him quoting scripture in his tough time is beautiful. I always said to myself I want to become the kind of man who draws strength from the Lord to face the tough situations in life. I am a muslim btw and I love this bible verse.
Mashallah. As from a fellow Muslim it makes me happy to see another Muslim acknowledge the faith of others and the spreading of peace of others. Alhamdulillah. May Allah help us all.
My high tower, my delivery.
Kall Storm yeah me too. I recite ayat ul kursi in tough times
J Phang deliverer*
Velóx "the spreading of peace of others" he says watching a guy snipe people to their deaths.
Jackson was by far.....the most skilled and blessed soldier
in the entire war
Jackson should have known better then to fire that many shots without changing positions. A sniper should never stay in the same spot for too long. Also the bell tower wasn't a good sniping post. Sure it offered good view of the battlefield, but it didn't offer a quick means of escape.
+TheStapleGunKid It also silhouetted him and was very predictable
Indeed, if you pay attention he says earlier in the movie (of the German sniper) "Thats where I'd be"
He saw his team losing men and started to get desperate if you watch his demeanor change in that scene he started just firing shots off, then they caught on... sad part
His duty was to shoot as many enemies as he could not of thinking how to escape. All of them knew that it was likely to be their last stand.
TheStapleGunKid how much do you weigh?
I always figured him missing the shots after reciting his prayers were a sign that his time was up. He did it everytime and never missed.
1:12 "Blessed be the Lord, My strength that teaches my hands to war and my fingers to fight, my goodness, my fortress, my high tower and my deliverer, my shield in he in whom I trust"
Psalms 144:1-2
Just watched this movie today, one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. Jackson was my favorite character. So unfortunate he had to go out that way.
Fun fact: That "tank" that kills Jackson is actually a Swedish Stormartillerivagn M/43 Assault Gun(Sav M/43 for short and based off the 38(t) chassis) converted into a Marder III Ausf H. This exact one was also used in the show Band of Brothers.
thanks!
My absolute favorite character in the movie. Guy was a badass and saved the team in many occasions before
My friend saw this movie in the theater in Germany. He said no one talked leaving after it was over.
He should have done a 360 no scope of the tower
Nitram Anyer MLG detected. But very good!
Nitram Anyer He didn't have commando pro on
He needed to put his controller sensitivity on max
to do that
Cod nerds
What, and give away the fact that he's Alex Mercer?
When the German sniper finally sees the rifle, Jackson shoots him right through his weapon, into his eye. Cool.
Sadly, that shot would of been impossible in reality, due to gravity and wind.
@@vesuvius115 Spoil sport!
@@patchdavis35 Not gonna lie Though, if someone hit a shot like that, I would probably be so impressed, I'd go into shock.
@@vesuvius115 its not about gravity is because they were close it is very difficult because the shooters have to be alined
@@joyaxalpa4229 It very much is because of gravity, they were at a good distance where the bullet would of dropped some, not to mention, its raining so it was probably windy, also, once the bullet hit, it would of broke the scope and stopped moving in total.
Barry Pepper went to the same highschool as me a year or two before i got there. Some of my friends knew him which is why I’m checking out this video. The cool thing I noticed that probably went unnoticed by most is just how well a Canadian is portraying an American.
jackson is a goodlooking man
By far one of the strongest scenes in the entire film.
Dude had a frickin tank zeroing in on his position and he still did what he had to do to.
You don't get men like that anymore.
They don't call 'em the 'Greatest Generation' for nothing.....
I love how he gets more and more stressed, impatient and scared, he starts killing all those germans but then he starts missing and starts shooting faster and faster until he realizes he was gonna die.
Great acting
Jackson was the most badass character in saving private Ryan and he was just so cool and his speeches were amazing
