Miguel in the comics is kinda-like Bruce Wayne in terms of personality. By day he is quippy and charismatic. But by night, he lurks in the futuristic-shadows, waiting to take out Alchemax.

THANK YOU, I'm not the only one!
The movie should've used Superior Spider-man instead of Miguel. Otto's whole deal is being so arrogant he can't see that he's wrong about his methods. Otto even invented the dimension watches and tried to lead his own team in the original spiderverse comic. I wrote all this before the end of the video, I didn't know that the character in the comics was being changed now but that's exactly what happened with the MCU too so I'm not surprised. I'd really hate to see Miguel end up just being "Mike from that hit movie" from now on just cause the movies have a wider audience like how Tony Stark became RDJ. I think the only reason Miguel was put in the role and not Otto even though it feels like Otto would be the perfect fit is solely because 2099 is the most recognizable Spider-Man besides Peter and maybe even more than Miles or Ben Reilly depending on what you grew up with. I wasn't into comics when I was younger but I picked up a few classic 2099 comics from Half Price Books after playing dimensions as a kid. That's the version of the character I love and it's so annoying seeing him adapted this way, it's like watching a toddler try to fit a square block in a round hole. Sure it fits for them, but to me it just isn't right.

They even have Miles hypocritically ask Miguel if he's sure he's actually Spider-Man, and now a shit ton of people who only know Miguel from the movie are going right along with it, coming up with every reason they can think of as to why Miguel doesn't deserve to be Spider-Man, from his powers not being a direct copy of Peter's, him getting his powers in a different way, him "not being able to wall crawl" when he literally can, and that he has laser webbing inside of natural webbing (which he actually DOES have unlike Peter, Miles, Gwen and the majority of other Spiders who have to make web shooters and his laser webbing is just like using a web shooter that doesn't have the drawbacks of normal webbing.)

@@nightmarefanatic1819 reminds me of a bit GodzillaMendoza did at the end of his Scarlet Spider and Miles cosplay tutorial. 2099 shows up and they ask who he is. He says, "I'm the half Hispanic guy with the black and red costume and a father with a dark secret who takes your place after you die!" To which the other Spider-men say, "so... Miles?" It's still funny how redundant Miles still is, I appreciate the first Spiderverse movie for giving us a much better take on the character but I rly wish 2 had extended that courtesy to the other characters. I was thinking the other day about the Stan Lee quote everyone uses about "anybody could be behind the mask" and honestly I think (and could be wrong) Stan wasn't making some grand statement about whether anybody could be Spider-Man, but just talking about how the costume on the cover could appeal to anyone... Maybe I'm wrong but idc, I picked up Ultimate Spider-Man to read about Peter Parker. I kept reading after he died because Miles was an interesting concept as a character, but poorly executed. And now adays I'm reading the new USM but I haven't touched a Miles book and keep looking over and seeing him with new gimmicks like his own rip-off clone saga and now a lightning sword... But back to Miguel, yeah any time the more mainstream media takes a lesser known character and makes it mainstream the original character is gone. The source material is changed to reflect the new shit for better or worse, I was genuinely surprised reading some older comics and seeing the older Tony Stark before the MCU. I hope Miguel isn't hit too hard but I saw he was forming a Spider-society in the comics after the movie came out so yeah, I'm staying away from that.

That's an old story actually. Every time some guy decides to make his own character out of already existing character and this go popular, comic writers decide (sometimes) to adapt this into comics. Same was with the Joker, like after Dark Knight he turned into agent of chaos, and then, after 2019 movie clown once again became victim of society (at least in some stories).
Same happens right now with Miguel. Hopefully, someone woud change his character back.

AtSV completely mischaracterized EVERY Spider-Man that wasn't Miles. Ben Reilly was a parody of something the real Ben never was in the comics, as one example. On top of everything though, this movie basically claims that EVERY, SINGLE SPIDER-MAN that appeared in this film - whether it was beloved SPECIFIC iterations like Spectacular Spider-Man or Unlimited, or even CHARACTERS FROM THE PREVIOUS FILM - are now morally bankrupt enough to just stand by and let several people die "for the good of the multiverse", including a kid's - Miles' - own father.
This movie single-handedly retconned an infinite number of iterations on the same hero to suddenly be members of an inter-dimensional Death Cult. I REFUSE to believe that *Spectacular Spider-Man* especially, one of the Spider-Men that more than anyone believed in his responsibility to do what's right, would be the one to tell a kid they "just have to accept it."
And why? Why was the film written like this? To prop up Miles as objectively correct (which he is), by altering everyone else to be cartoonishly evil. AtSV's Miguel is the way that he is, ONLY because the writers wanted to make him into a strawman representing Miles haters; *they admitted as much in interviews!!!* Why did they feel the need to in the first place, when the first film had already made a perfect refinement of Miles into an extremely likeable character? This behavior is incredibly immature and disrespectful. Fuck this film and anyone who defends this horseshit.

He's cynical, has a temper, but still believes in doing the right thing, he just had a crappy life that's all. But eventually, he loosens up a little and remembers he's a hero.

Tbh most adaptations outside the comics hes not portrayed accurately. Only one that truly got it was Edge of Time. Miguel is extremely selfish and goal oriented. Saving people werent on his top priority, it was always his mission first. It took years of character development for him to mellow out and learn his behavior as spiderman was unacceptable. The edge of time scene where miguel refuses to help save mary jane and it results in a major argument with peter is accurate to him the most

I think Miguel’s ATSV adaptation isn’t a miss necessarily. As some other people said, this version of Miguel is a completely different take because it fits that story. And that’s ok. He’s a very misguided hero. That’s why he’s a douchebag. I think BTSV will definitely be more accurate to the comics version because we’ll see Miguel learn to become the person he is in the comics. The point of the movie is that he THINKS he’s the keeper of canon. He’s so unbelievably lost in his ways that he ends up being like Superior.
As for the comics, they always do this. They did it with Miles and Gwen. The writers don’t understand why the Spider-Verse versions and why replicating it in the comics doesn’t work. They’re completely different characters. Movie Miles and Gwen are NOT the same as comics Miles and Gwen. And that’s fine. But Marvel doesn’t understand that. So they think people will just buy more 2099 comics or Miles and Gwen comics if they align the comics with the movies.

  • @arachnidcomics6404
    @arachnidcomics6404 8 месяцев назад +4

Honestly the adaption of Miguel was probably my only personal complaint as a comic book fan.
Had the film just replaced antagonist Miguel with Superior Spider-Man than I personally would’ve been fine with it.
If anything it probably would make a lot more sense if it was Superior Spider-Man rather than Miguel. Because a lot of what Miguel does in the movie makes a lot more sense for Otto Octavius to of done. Chasing Miles is exactly in character for Otto to do, Miguel would’ve been hesitant at first but still would’ve at least tried to help Miles.
In fact Otto gathering a group of spider people to take down a common threat is exactly what happens in the first spider verse comics by Dan Slott and he is also a secondary antagonist in that story event too.
So why poorly adapt Miguel by turning him into an antagonist when Superior Spider-Man is right there and can do all the things that movie Miguel does without being out of character.
Now part of me dislikes ATSV because it makes people think that Miguel is an antagonist when really most of the stuff movie Miguel does is all crap that comics Miguel would be heavily against.
People say that because he lost his world as an excuse and a justification; but in the comics Miguel saw Nueva York flooded and destroyed and while he was devastated, he didn’t become a mountain of resolve ready to strike anyone down or chase people who disagreed with him. He was still a hero, something that ATSV either failed to show or just didn’t want to show.
Edit: Just finished the video. Wow, turns out people who actually read the source material think alike.

Still, I don't think superior spiderman would be a good narrative in miguels place. Because I highly doubt Otto has what it takes to establish the spider society.
Miguel actually has the trappings of a great leader, even welding thors hammer and preparing to help society get to a new age in his og run. Otto's too erratic, and untrustworthy right off the bat for any moral spider hero (he did manage to end up in a team in the spiderverse comic bit those were all like evil adjacent spidermen.) to take actually trusting him, and his ego might dissuade him from everything to get help.

To be fair in Spider-Verse Miguel believes that Miles is going to ruin the multiverse and cause an unknown amount of universes to die because of what he sees as recklessness and going against what he sees as multiversal rules. Miguel is doing what he sees as right and he was doing so for an unknown amount of time and already destroyed a universe where he had the perfect life and wants to prevent the same mistake from happening which is why he is such an asshole. He doesn't one to be but is because of stress at keeping the multiverse intact and how much he suffered. You can see this with how he was explaining it to Miles calmly before Miles started to get more aggressive so Miguel gets more agressive and lets his anger out on Miles and then Gwen.

I really hope S.D/E.O.T Spider-Man 2099 will appear in Beyond the Spider-Verse. And knock Movie Spider-Man 2099's block off. Restoring Migel to how the comics use to be.
Am I the only one who wants to see that happen?

Really well made video :) Though personally I think it missed the mark a bit, I think how ATSV adapted him was fine, not only has he suffered a lot but it's also fine that he's different after all it's not a 1-1 super accurate adaption. no hate though

I don't think Spider-Man Edge of Time sold all that well but I do wish it was on PC so I could at least play it. Also the Miguel rewriting makes me think of what they did to Brainiac in Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, alongside making him OP enough to brainwash the league but weak enough to lose to the Suicide Squad, his motivations and method of conquering were both incredibly inaccurate to what most people know him for. I think writers that may have a tertiary comic knowledge just choose adjacent characters for the sake of notoriety instead of sourcing a more proper less known pick or just going original.
