Miguel in the comics is kinda-like Bruce Wayne in terms of personality. By day he is quippy and charismatic. But by night, he lurks in the futuristic-shadows, waiting to take out Alchemax.
I mean miguel in into the Spider-verse post credit scene seemed comic accurate, but as we all know he broke the canon and watched his family and entire universe die because of him, that kind of trauma could've changed him completely
We already have a Miguel that went through this scenario and he didn't turn into a tyrant who assaults and banishes anyone who doesn't fall in line with his opinions.
Honestly what I hate most about spiderverse 2099 is that he's still a really good charicter, he just so happens to be nothing like his comic counterpart
Which is wild since the movie tries to tell us that he IS the Miguel from the comics. Honestly, I like him as well, but if he had been switched out for someone like Superior Spider-Man nobody would be like "damn, that seems more like Miguel O'Hara, that should have been him."
I personally wasn't going in expecting spiderverse to be 1:1 comic accurate or anything when pretty much none of the characters are, they just kinda fit the story that's being told.
I liked the movie version, but it doesn't really represent the original idea of that character. For example, they changed A LOT about Miles, but his core stayed the same, and the changes they made only improved upon the original concept, "thesis" if you want. However Miguel didn't get the same treatment
Same can be said to the live action Spider-Men ,but nahhh Spider verse fans always claimed their movies version are better adaption ,because the movie has comicbook style animation or something.
@@Fenyx950 Fair. He wasn't that bad in it though, they let him remain serious and heroic as far as I remember (Assuming he wasn't changed after the spiderverse arc)

I'm okay with Miguel and other characters being different in adaptations, but as soon as they are changed to be like the "popular one" then it becomes a problem
And this is the problem with these animations. People now consider Noir to be Nicolas Cage and won't accept anything else. I'm dead serious, this is the time we live on.
Why is it a problem? Characters change, and just because one was made earlier doesn't mean subsequent versions have to be like it. You can have preferences for sure but calling it a problem is a bit silly.
@@gwit4051 I was mainly talking about when the characters in the comics become like the ones on screen, where their personalities don't match up. Marvel does this all the time and it's known as "Brand Cohesion". It often results in character assassinations and incoherent stories. Imagine if a character suddenly changed their entire personality and perspective for no reason other than the movie version of the character is like this so therefore comic must follow suit.
I did not realize how perfect Otto would have been for Miguel's role. A genius control freak who wants to do the right thing by any means necessary and is insecure about how much of a real Spider-Man he is. He could have been a great foil go Miles.
I agree, and if they still want Miguel to the antagonist he could be second in command of spider society. Hell, superior could have lie to Miguel about the cannon need to stay in tack right after he lost his family since his mind be fragile at that moment. Also miles can make everyone including Miguel about everything superior have told them.
Well, to be fair, the movie version of Miguel witnessed the death of his family and a whole universe. That level of trauma can completely change a man's personality. Perhaps the reason he seems so different from his comic counterpart is because of the different experiences they've had. Perhaps Miguel WAS more like his comic version BEFORE all his dead family & incursion shenanigans.
in the comics Miguel literally loses his wife and goes to his ex and you're telling me that witnessing the death of a child and wife that aren't his is what changes him
@@Fenyx950 Well movie Miguel lost his family TWICE. Not only that, but also watched an entire UNIVERSE die and that's a whole other level of traumatic. And they were his in his mind, kinda like how Wanda tried to take the alternate version of her kids in MOM.
thats not what im saying im saying i agree with you because in the movie he had videos with his children before he lost them and he seemed happy, but I do believe all the trauma messed with his mind and he now he's changed for the worst@@Fenyx950
@@BLAKPIXEL98in the OG comics Miguel witnessed the destruction of Nueva York when it was flooded to hell and he still didn’t do nearly as many stuff as movie Miguel did. I mean, he was still distraught but he got better and accepted it. OG comics Miguel and movie Miguel are just two different people.
I would genuinely love a 1:1 comic adaptation of 2099 Spider-Man. I really do enjoy the version we got in ATSV, but yeah he's obviously not the same Miguel we knew in the comics.
I would love that too! My ideal is an animated adaptation that remembers that animation isn't just for kids. It doesn't even have to be Spider-Verse levels of innovative. ATSV was already skirting the line between PG & PG-13, take the leap of faith Sony!
I don't think Across was a bad adaptation I think being so stressed out has brought him out of character there is a deleted scene of him interacting with Gwen, Ben, and Jess and it seems more in line
This is the same adaptation movie universe, who made King Pin 10 ft tall and look like a damn giant boulder, also the reason why he is so serious is because he thinks that he caused the destruction of an entire reality and the death of the girl he treated like a daughter, so it is reasonable why the guy has lost it and he does have humerous moments
THANK YOU, I'm not the only one! The movie should've used Superior Spider-man instead of Miguel. Otto's whole deal is being so arrogant he can't see that he's wrong about his methods. Otto even invented the dimension watches and tried to lead his own team in the original spiderverse comic. I wrote all this before the end of the video, I didn't know that the character in the comics was being changed now but that's exactly what happened with the MCU too so I'm not surprised. I'd really hate to see Miguel end up just being "Mike from that hit movie" from now on just cause the movies have a wider audience like how Tony Stark became RDJ. I think the only reason Miguel was put in the role and not Otto even though it feels like Otto would be the perfect fit is solely because 2099 is the most recognizable Spider-Man besides Peter and maybe even more than Miles or Ben Reilly depending on what you grew up with. I wasn't into comics when I was younger but I picked up a few classic 2099 comics from Half Price Books after playing dimensions as a kid. That's the version of the character I love and it's so annoying seeing him adapted this way, it's like watching a toddler try to fit a square block in a round hole. Sure it fits for them, but to me it just isn't right.
@@Bana_Frog I honestly feel like, because they admit the story was influenced by how some people don't like Miles, they specifically used Miguel as he's the original successor to the Spider-Man mantle because they wanted to make some stupid point about Miles's worthiness to be Spider-Man or something. They even have Miles hypocritically ask Miguel if he's sure he's actually Spider-Man, and now a shit ton of people who only know Miguel from the movie are going right along with it, coming up with every reason they can think of as to why Miguel doesn't deserve to be Spider-Man, from his powers not being a direct copy of Peter's, him getting his powers in a different way, him "not being able to wall crawl" when he literally can, and that he has laser webbing inside of natural webbing (which he actually DOES have unlike Peter, Miles, Gwen and the majority of other Spiders who have to make web shooters and his laser webbing is just like using a web shooter that doesn't have the drawbacks of normal webbing.)
@@nightmarefanatic1819 reminds me of a bit GodzillaMendoza did at the end of his Scarlet Spider and Miles cosplay tutorial. 2099 shows up and they ask who he is. He says, "I'm the half Hispanic guy with the black and red costume and a father with a dark secret who takes your place after you die!" To which the other Spider-men say, "so... Miles?" It's still funny how redundant Miles still is, I appreciate the first Spiderverse movie for giving us a much better take on the character but I rly wish 2 had extended that courtesy to the other characters. I was thinking the other day about the Stan Lee quote everyone uses about "anybody could be behind the mask" and honestly I think (and could be wrong) Stan wasn't making some grand statement about whether anybody could be Spider-Man, but just talking about how the costume on the cover could appeal to anyone... Maybe I'm wrong but idc, I picked up Ultimate Spider-Man to read about Peter Parker. I kept reading after he died because Miles was an interesting concept as a character, but poorly executed. And now adays I'm reading the new USM but I haven't touched a Miles book and keep looking over and seeing him with new gimmicks like his own rip-off clone saga and now a lightning sword... But back to Miguel, yeah any time the more mainstream media takes a lesser known character and makes it mainstream the original character is gone. The source material is changed to reflect the new shit for better or worse, I was genuinely surprised reading some older comics and seeing the older Tony Stark before the MCU. I hope Miguel isn't hit too hard but I saw he was forming a Spider-society in the comics after the movie came out so yeah, I'm staying away from that.
That's an old story actually. Every time some guy decides to make his own character out of already existing character and this go popular, comic writers decide (sometimes) to adapt this into comics. Same was with the Joker, like after Dark Knight he turned into agent of chaos, and then, after 2019 movie clown once again became victim of society (at least in some stories). Same happens right now with Miguel. Hopefully, someone woud change his character back. Still, I really dig his original run. Later comics were kinda meh for me
AtSV completely mischaracterized EVERY Spider-Man that wasn't Miles. Ben Reilly was a parody of something the real Ben never was in the comics, as one example. On top of everything though, this movie basically claims that EVERY, SINGLE SPIDER-MAN that appeared in this film - whether it was beloved SPECIFIC iterations like Spectacular Spider-Man or Unlimited, or even CHARACTERS FROM THE PREVIOUS FILM - are now morally bankrupt enough to just stand by and let several people die "for the good of the multiverse", including a kid's - Miles' - own father. This movie single-handedly retconned an infinite number of iterations on the same hero to suddenly be members of an inter-dimensional Death Cult. I REFUSE to believe that *Spectacular Spider-Man* especially, one of the Spider-Men that more than anyone believed in his responsibility to do what's right, would be the one to tell a kid they "just have to accept it." And why? Why was the film written like this? To prop up Miles as objectively correct (which he is), by altering everyone else to be cartoonishly evil. AtSV's Miguel is the way that he is, ONLY because the writers wanted to make him into a strawman representing Miles haters; *they admitted as much in interviews!!!* Why did they feel the need to in the first place, when the first film had already made a perfect refinement of Miles into an extremely likeable character? This behavior is incredibly immature and disrespectful. Fuck this film and anyone who defends this horseshit.
@@reubenax they should've tried to figure out a way to save his universe anyway, because they're all motherfucking Spider-Man, THE hero defined by how selfless he is, and just like Miles they would never accept that there's nothing that could be done to save lives. Besides, you and I both know that canon events are bullshit. The second movie is gonna come out and reveal the extremely-obvious plot twist that "oh no, universes were being destroyed by something else entirely!1!!" and it was all just a big misunderstanding, because the big stubborn old man 2099 was being a big stubborn old man who didn't want to accept new ideas :(( It's all just contrived BS to prop up Miles as the good guy by morphing [literally everyone else] into an idiot, or a stubborn self-righteous jerk.
@@fanb1536 As far as they were aware, they only had one option: apprehend Miles. They saw canon events destroy universes with their own eyes. Not only that, they were explicitly shown to have tried to save universes in similar cases. The problem is, they can't(not with their current technology at least), which the movie straight up says in regards to the indian universe. So when, to their knowledge, canon events cannot safely be broken, why shouldn't they discourage Miles?
@@reubenax Because Spider-Man would still continue trying. They barely understand jack about canon events and absolutely would try to save people regardless, trying different ideas. Spider-Man is not a "sacrifice one for the greater good of all" type of hero whatsoever, he is borderline selfish in how much blame he places on his own shoulders.
@@fanb1536 They don't "barely understand". They have an extensive list of canon events because of how many they've witnessed and how much research they've done. Should PS4 Spider-Man have saved Aunt May or New York? It's the same dilemma here.
I remember a lot of people saying 2099 was actually going to be Miguel’s brother Gabriel O’Hara and I feel like that may have worked better from a character perspective since his version of 2099 is less well known and has less expectations around it
I remember collecting Spider-Man 2099 comics during the 90’s. Miguel O’Hara is my second favorite Spider-Man after Peter Parker. Technically Miguel O’Hara’s costume is a recycled Day of The Dead costume. I agree with what you said in this video, I tried explaining to people about what Miguel is really like from the comics but they don’t seem to care. It just disappoints me when people don’t like looking at the original source material.
I wholeheartedly agree. Most of the people watching the film for the first time don't even understand these characters come from comics. I remember when Black Panther came out and idiots genuinely thought he was the creation of Ryan Coogler (director and co-writer) Normies only consume what's on the screen and don't care for anything that came prior.
@@PapaBear77 I was always inspired to read the original source material whenever I watched cartoons, video games, tv shows or movies based on certain particular superheroes. I was always curious on what got them started and stuff like that. I grew up during the 90’s and I saw a lot of Superhero media when growing up and I was inspired to read the original comics.
My biggest complaint and honestly the one thing that makes me not enjoy the movie is the fact that they tried so hard to make him a villain, no not an antagonist, a straight up villain, remember how everyone looks at him when Gwen says "I thought we were the good guys" girl everything happening right now is completely 100% your fault! For new generations of spiderman fans they will know him as a bad spiderman (don't get me wrong, Miguel is not a good spiderman, that's what makes him special and different from Parker) but people will start to know him as a bad guy... I hope I'm wrong, he's definitely my favorite superhero
This is what I hate about adaptations like this because now the adaptation is more popular than the original story and the original story in the comics are now going to change to fit the adaptation
I agree with your takes nearly entirely but to be fair, Miguel was acting in the way he did because of the trauma of destroying and entire universe plus his daughter. The fact that he was the epicenter for billions of lives being lost is a sickening thought and I think he was only so awful to miles to demoralize him or to stop him from facing that same guilt he did. While I prefer edge of time Miguel a lot more I think Spiderverse Miguel was great too on the opposite end.
Honestly, I agree with Spider-verse Miguel. I get it's an adaptation, and they say he's an "antagonist" but he's written to be a complete jerk. I get in the comics he's more unhinged according to his creators, but he still has a soft side. He's cynical, has a temper, but still believes in doing the right thing, he just had a crappy life that's all. But eventually, he loosens up a little and remembers he's a hero.
No he wouldn't. Miguel in the comics has experienced extreme bereavement and it made him into a scarier person, but he turned his rage on those responsible for the deaths of his loved ones. He did NOT become an authoritarian asshole who cannot handle being defied.
Tbh most adaptations outside the comics hes not portrayed accurately. Only one that truly got it was Edge of Time. Miguel is extremely selfish and goal oriented. Saving people werent on his top priority, it was always his mission first. It took years of character development for him to mellow out and learn his behavior as spiderman was unacceptable. The edge of time scene where miguel refuses to help save mary jane and it results in a major argument with peter is accurate to him the most
I read the 90s run over and over again. I enjoy Across The Spider-Verse (not as much as everyone else) but their 2099 just felt off. The whole story with his daughter was interesting but just nothing like the comics. They got the design right, most of the powers, and the perfect actor.
Basically the story went like this Superior is traveling across the multiverse to switch bodies with another spider-person to ignore his cannon event of Peter Parker getting his body back and one of those spider-people was gonna be my interpretation of Miles
And originally before across the spider-verse was about to come out The spider-society was suppose to protect Miles from superior instead of well the other way around
Miguel works perfectly well as an alternate ending version of himself, where he takes over Alchemax, starts defending the multiverse but becomes too absorbed in his work and can't handle the immense responsibility. It's definitely how Miguel would act if put in a situation like that. The issue is that this is the most popular iteration of Miguel, so a lot of people now see him as a corrupt time cop.
The thing that sucks is that in the comics Miguel is basically a vigilante who fights against the corrupt, authoritarian powers that have a stranglehold over the city, and now he IS the corrupt authoritarian power. God damnit, the more I think about this move the more it pisses me off.
@@BigKeit That also changes to shades of brown! Just like his eyes change from green, to red to brown and sometimes even blue! No seriously, why did the colorists in the original run have such a hard time with consistency? It also happened to him in Exiles where he spends most of his stint with brown hair, only for the last few issues to depict him with black hair.
@@nightmarefanatic1819 honestly probably just a lack of paying attention to the model sheet, 90s comics had a lot of just kinda do whatever you want lmao
@@BigKeit Which would have been a possibility had there not been instances of Miguel's hair being teo different colors in two different panels ON THE SAME PAGE.
Can anyone think that the backstory of Spiderverse 2099 where his version was killed and he replaced himself with himself was kinda nothing like the OG spider man 2099
I agree when I watched the teaser trailer for across the spider verse, and when I saw Miguel, I honestly thought he was trying to save miles from the other universe and bring them back to his so he can recruit him to be part of the spider society
Definitely the worst Miguel adaption. I don’t mind his design at all. It’s just his characterization that was just wrong. He’d never actually act the way he does in Spider-Verse. It sucks because that’s the most popular adaptation.
Weirdly this Miguel's powers seem to be tech based aside from his strength and speed. When Miles shorts out 2099's suit he has trouble wall crawling and his webs dont work correctly.
When i read the 2099 comics for the first time, i read Miguel's normal voice as his voice in edge of time, and his spidey persona voice as his shattered dimensions voice
I think Miguel’s ATSV adaptation isn’t a miss necessarily. As some other people said, this version of Miguel is a completely different take because it fits that story. And that’s ok. He’s a very misguided hero. That’s why he’s a douchebag. I think BTSV will definitely be more accurate to the comics version because we’ll see Miguel learn to become the person he is in the comics. The point of the movie is that he THINKS he’s the keeper of canon. He’s so unbelievably lost in his ways that he ends up being like Superior. As for the comics, they always do this. They did it with Miles and Gwen. The writers don’t understand why the Spider-Verse versions and why replicating it in the comics doesn’t work. They’re completely different characters. Movie Miles and Gwen are NOT the same as comics Miles and Gwen. And that’s fine. But Marvel doesn’t understand that. So they think people will just buy more 2099 comics or Miles and Gwen comics if they align the comics with the movies. Why do you think Civil War II exists?
yeah, as much as it was cool to see Miguel in the movie, making him the antagonist was just wrong. They also did Ben Reily dirty by making him a cry baby and essentially a confused lost child. All that to highlight Miles...
When I was a kid I always thought he was just a upgraded suit of spider man and use to be my favorite spider man before Kaine but he still my second favorite spider man suit
Now even if they wanted to go with a time traveling Miguel (all new all different) he spent the ENTIRE RUN MESSING WITH NEXUS EVENTS! His entire point is that time isn’t concrete and that everyone deserves a second chance. This movie has no idea who they are adapting
Imagine if post credis spiderverse Miguel isn't the same as across the spiderverse Miguel and we end up with miles meeting a comic accurate version of of Miguel who then aids him against his spiderverse counterpart
Honestly the adaption of Miguel was probably my only personal complaint as a comic book fan. Had the film just replaced antagonist Miguel with Superior Spider-Man than I personally would’ve been fine with it. If anything it probably would make a lot more sense if it was Superior Spider-Man rather than Miguel. Because a lot of what Miguel does in the movie makes a lot more sense for Otto Octavius to of done. Chasing Miles is exactly in character for Otto to do, Miguel would’ve been hesitant at first but still would’ve at least tried to help Miles. In fact Otto gathering a group of spider people to take down a common threat is exactly what happens in the first spider verse comics by Dan Slott and he is also a secondary antagonist in that story event too. So why poorly adapt Miguel by turning him into an antagonist when Superior Spider-Man is right there and can do all the things that movie Miguel does without being out of character. Now part of me dislikes ATSV because it makes people think that Miguel is an antagonist when really most of the stuff movie Miguel does is all crap that comics Miguel would be heavily against. People say that because he lost his world as an excuse and a justification; but in the comics Miguel saw Nueva York flooded and destroyed and while he was devastated, he didn’t become a mountain of resolve ready to strike anyone down or chase people who disagreed with him. He was still a hero, something that ATSV either failed to show or just didn’t want to show. Edit: Just finished the video. Wow, turns out people who actually read the source material think alike.
why would anyone follow superior spider man though? brainwashing hundreds of spiders doesn't really make sense, and why would he alienate miles of all people, bro doesn't even know him.
I feel you on Spider-verse Miguel, but I think the drastic mischaracterization of him in the films makes him much more compelling and gives him room to grow. I trust the Spider-verse writers to know what they want out of their version of Spider-Man 2099 and it gets me excited to see where his character will ultimately become in the conclusion
i feel like this is a different 2099. he has had a cannon event that was completely different from the comics that definitely changed his way of viewing things
Look, I don't care if Spiderman 2099 wasn't 'comic accurate ' in ATSV he's still a great character at the end of the day. Plus, it's completely understandable why he would act the way he does. He witnessed entire worlds and people die, including his family.
You guys are so damn stupid your guys don't even understand about his character you all just a pest that are fans of across the spider verse that don't read any comics ever since the 90s
Good update though: Peter David is back with Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 which is a direct continuation of the original comics (excluding the last couple of issues that David didn't write) so there's hope for comics Miguel after all! I hope it sells well so Marvel will permanently return the reins to David and we get the continuation he planned.
this is not one of those times. They could've used Superior Spider-Man (as pointed out in the video), or created an entirely new Spider-Man to be the villain. There was no reason to turn Miguel into a villain other than 'he looks cool and menacing'.
In the comics it's now new Miguel from rewritten 2099. The original 928 Mig chilling on the tropic island on 616 with wife and son (and ATSV suit is Miguel's son's suit, Gabriel O'Hara jr.) and wait the new 2099 to come and teach new himself to be Spider-Man. P.S. Everyone go buy and read new Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 from Peter David. It's straight continue of 2099 Spidey Volume 1
The problem is that that movie is only a part 1 so maybe all of this will be explored in part 2 I will keep my opinion reserved until the second movie comes out and caps off the story
Dude i can only imagine if Superior Spiderman had the role of Miguel in the Spiderverse Heck im afraid good old bad Otto may not apear in the movies And no, someone whit his costume in the bloody background dosent count
12:18 While understandable, thats probably Peter's most selfish moment. Hes willing to risk sacrificing the future for his own happiness, whichbis odd givem how in most Spiderman stories he prioritizes being Spiderman and helping others above his own family and friends.
Honestly now I feel like people reading other versions of 2099 are gonna be disappointed. I’m kinda sad because they completely changed his character and now they prob wanna rewrite him to be like ATSV. Edge of time Spidey is my fav just cuz it’s what I knew first personally tho and with how he’s pretty different from source I guess there’s room for movement
I don't think this is going to happen at all in the next Spiderverse film, but I would love to see the antagonistic ATSV Miguel have to face the Miguel from Earth-96943, and try and fail to justify his actions with the Spider Society
Though spiderman 2099's mischaracterization is bothersome, it seems the general flanderization of alt spiderman is a big issue for these films. Still, I don't think superior spiderman would be a good narrative in miguels place. Because I highly doubt Otto has what it takes to establish the spider society. Miguel actually has the trappings of a great leader, even welding thors hammer and preparing to help society get to a new age in his og run. Otto's too erratic, and untrustworthy right off the bat for any moral spider hero (he did manage to end up in a team in the spiderverse comic bit those were all like evil adjacent spidermen.) to take actually trusting him, and his ego might dissuade him from everything to get help.
10:53 I feel like this is dark knight returns Miguel. He’s so broken and beaten down by what he’s experienced that he gave into his more cynical and animalistic nature. He lost “what it means to be Spider-Man.” It’s like assassin spider-man. He’s abandoned past values after being pushed over the limit. Give it time. He may come back to adopt the classic Spider-Man values in Beyond.
That's the problem when you write a character to be a mouthpiece against the haters of your precious protagonist instead of actually writing writing the character as he is. Superior def would have been a better choice. Maybe a team-up of Superior and Billy Braddock Spider-Man UK with them being at odds with each other. Put Karn in there somehow. Just don't assassinate Miguel to dunk on people that don't like Miles.
My question is why didn't they simply have Gabrial be this movies spin 2099? They already made him as big and menacing as Gabrial is in the comics unlike Miguel who's more lingy and cut built. Even the spider symbol is a bit different, but they still chose to name him Miguel
Funny how they keep going on about “Canon Events” without respecting the source canon. Feels shallow, like they hastily flipped through a spider-verse catalog and asked “who looks cool and slightly menacing?” Without actually delving into the character themselves. Like why is Ben Reilly so edgy and broody like Lego Batman? And WTF did they do to Spectacular Spider-Man?! He of all Spider-Men would be against this “Canon Event” bull. Especially when they go Josh Keaton to voice him again.
Looking cool is what it ever was. SM99 is NOT Spider-Man or even "a" Spider-Man. He's just named "Spider-Man" for corporate reasons, like Shazam is NOT named Captain Marvel, for corporate reasons. Or She-Hulk, or Spider-Woman. The big kicker is that "corporate reaosns" heavily implies the sheep-like consumers who get ATTACHED only on the stepping stone of ripping off some fan favorite IP. VEnom is in that same categor and easily COULD ahve the random marketing name of "Spider-Man", when really he's JUST a hoe-in character. With the exact same appeal as Spawn.
The reason Ben is edgy like that is that it’s a parody of 90s comics. It would have however made more sense if it was Kaine as he is more edgier than Ben.
naturally, one of the most unique variants Spider-People, well-known for not having experienced any of the "canon-event" that Peter has, is the one that preaches about them
3:09 correction, the drug Raptur is actually just so incredibly addicting that it’s impossible to leave it. And Alcamax is the only supplier so there forcing him to keep working for them just to get more
na i actually thinking choosing miguel (instead of someone like superior) was a wise choice, hes far more tragic since he started out a good guy while superior was pretty malicious from the start. plus miguel's power set and stories already differ from the status quo which counteracts his argument against miles who's much closer to it which is super interesting imo
I'm so happy I wasn't the only one who thought this. Like yeah the jokes and memes were all funny and such but we all know that this is not THE 2099 spider man. Heck the ultimate spider man tv show got this more right then the movies and that show got so so much wrong.
Yeah after watching the whole video i agree spiderverse 2099 isn't the real 2099 spiderman and having supirior spiderman would have acutally been so sick and so much better i still like that verison of miguel that just isn't the main him to be honest.
To be fair in Spider-Verse Miguel believes that Miles is going to ruin the multiverse and cause an unknown amount of universes to die because of what he sees as recklessness and going against what he sees as multiversal rules. Miguel is doing what he sees as right and he was doing so for an unknown amount of time and already destroyed a universe where he had the perfect life and wants to prevent the same mistake from happening which is why he is such an asshole. He doesn't one to be but is because of stress at keeping the multiverse intact and how much he suffered. You can see this with how he was explaining it to Miles calmly before Miles started to get more aggressive so Miguel gets more agressive and lets his anger out on Miles and then Gwen.
I really hope S.D/E.O.T Spider-Man 2099 will appear in Beyond the Spider-Verse. And knock Movie Spider-Man 2099's block off. Restoring Migel to how the comics use to be. Am I the only one who wants to see that happen?
Really well made video :) Though personally I think it missed the mark a bit, I think how ATSV adapted him was fine, not only has he suffered a lot but it's also fine that he's different after all it's not a 1-1 super accurate adaption. no hate though
I don't think Spider-Man Edge of Time sold all that well but I do wish it was on PC so I could at least play it. Also the Miguel rewriting makes me think of what they did to Brainiac in Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, alongside making him OP enough to brainwash the league but weak enough to lose to the Suicide Squad, his motivations and method of conquering were both incredibly inaccurate to what most people know him for. I think writers that may have a tertiary comic knowledge just choose adjacent characters for the sake of notoriety instead of sourcing a more proper less known pick or just going original.
Miguel in the comics is kinda-like Bruce Wayne in terms of personality. By day he is quippy and charismatic. But by night, he lurks in the futuristic-shadows, waiting to take out Alchemax.
I think (even though 2099 came first) he's like an older version of terry from batman beyond if you get what i mean

I mean miguel in into the Spider-verse post credit scene seemed comic accurate, but as we all know he broke the canon and watched his family and entire universe die because of him, that kind of trauma could've changed him completely
I find that to be understandable and still love the character
We already have a Miguel that went through this scenario and he didn't turn into a tyrant who assaults and banishes anyone who doesn't fall in line with his opinions.
Entirely possible but still makes no sense as to why they’d even adapt his character at all if they decide to change him entirely.

Well I’d say Gwen is pretty 1:1 and Peter B is pretty accurate in terms of trait wise
Same can be said to the live action Spider-Men ,but nahhh Spider verse fans always claimed their movies version are better adaption ,because the movie has comicbook style animation or something.

I REFUSE to believe that *Spectacular Spider-Man* especially, one of the Spider-Men that more than anyone believed in his responsibility to do what's right, would be the one to tell a kid they "just have to accept it."
And why? Why was the film written like this? To prop up Miles as objectively correct (which he is), by altering everyone else to be cartoonishly evil. AtSV's Miguel is the way that he is, ONLY because the writers wanted to make him into a strawman representing Miles haters; *they admitted as much in interviews!!!* Why did they feel the need to in the first place, when the first film had already made a perfect refinement of Miles into an extremely likeable character? This behavior is incredibly immature and disrespectful. Fuck this film and anyone who defends this horseshit.
So they should've encouraged Miles to get his universe destroyed? 😂😂
@@reubenax they should've tried to figure out a way to save his universe anyway, because they're all motherfucking Spider-Man, THE hero defined by how selfless he is, and just like Miles they would never accept that there's nothing that could be done to save lives.

The second movie is gonna come out and reveal the extremely-obvious plot twist that "oh no, universes were being destroyed by something else entirely!1!!" and it was all just a big misunderstanding, because the big stubborn old man 2099 was being a big stubborn old man who didn't want to accept new ideas :((

So when, to their knowledge, canon events cannot safely be broken, why shouldn't they discourage Miles?
@@reubenax Because Spider-Man would still continue trying. They barely understand jack about canon events and absolutely would try to save people regardless, trying different ideas.
I remember when Black Panther came out and idiots genuinely thought he was the creation of Ryan Coogler (director and co-writer)
Normies only consume what's on the screen and don't care for anything that came prior.

I was always inspired to read the original source material whenever I watched cartoons, video games, tv shows or movies based on certain particular superheroes.
I’m glad that my first introduction to the character was edge of time that game is so nostalgic now
if comic spider-man 2099 went through what spider verse 2099 went through, he would act exactly like him
But he's not tho
No he wouldn't. Miguel in the comics has experienced extreme bereavement and it made him into a scarier person, but he turned his rage on those responsible for the deaths of his loved ones. He did NOT become an authoritarian asshole who cannot handle being defied.
damn now that you pointed out how superior could have been a better role for Across it made me WISH he was the antagonist
They got everything right except his actual character, how does that even happen
He's also in the Ultimate Spider-Man event during the Spiderverse event
FUN FACT: Vulture 2099 did actually appear in the DS version of Shattered Dimensions as the first boss you fight in Miguel's dimension.
You know what’s funny about the superior Spider-Man mention, a discord server I’m in literally did that for spider-verse story RP
It was basically ASTV but Superior spider-man is villain instead of the spot
Basically the story went like this Superior is traveling across the multiverse to switch bodies with another spider-person to ignore his cannon event of Peter Parker getting his body back and one of those spider-people was gonna be my interpretation of Miles
And originally before across the spider-verse was about to come out The spider-society was suppose to protect Miles from superior instead of well the other way around
The movies are definitely changing him moving forward but I don't see it as being bad because I still liked the movie version
The movie pointed you to the villain and that the spot.
I would say that Miguel became even more cynical than he already was, due to time travel stuff.

You forgot the ultimate spider man version of spider man 2099
Peter and Miguel in Edge of Time go together like PB and J
Why do you think Civil War II exists?
exactly
And I hate it
yeah, as much as it was cool to see Miguel in the movie, making him the antagonist was just wrong. They also did Ben Reily dirty by making him a cry baby and essentially a confused lost child. All that to highlight Miles...
When I was a kid I always thought he was just a upgraded suit of spider man and use to be my favorite spider man before Kaine but he still my second favorite spider man suit
You forgot the ultimate spider-man (animated) adaptation.
Now even if they wanted to go with a time traveling Miguel (all new all different) he spent the ENTIRE RUN MESSING WITH NEXUS EVENTS! His entire point is that time isn’t concrete and that everyone deserves a second chance. This movie has no idea who they are adapting
Anyone else here just to see people talk about how Christopher Daniel Barnes is amazing?
Real Miguel should come in Beyond the SpiderVerse and come kick movie him’s ass
Don't even get me started on Ben Reilly
Its even worse with scarlet spider, they made him extremly stereotypical 90s

Honestly shattered dimensions Miguel just sounds like if Bumblebee got spiderman powers lol
LOL
My only problem with Edge of Time is his suit's the wrong colour lol
My question is why didn't they simply have Gabrial be this movies spin 2099? They already made him as big and menacing as Gabrial is in the comics unlike Miguel who's more lingy and cut built. Even the spider symbol is a bit different, but they still chose to name him Miguel
This is very true, i hope his popularity doesn't affect the character going forward
Also you sound like Alan from Invincible
Fandoms are on the mental level of Spinal Tap, just replace the number 11 with a brand name. "This goes up to Spider-Man".
The reason Ben is edgy like that is that it’s a parody of 90s comics. It would have however made more sense if it was Kaine as he is more edgier than Ben.

What the fuck are you even saying? Miguel is the Spiderman of his time. Go read the comic or sit down.
naturally, one of the most unique variants Spider-People, well-known for not having experienced any of the "canon-event" that Peter has, is the one that preaches about them
10:02 Disney XD Ultimate Spiderman 2099 adaption: Am i a joke to you?
From my POV, the Miguel from Spider Verse went down a dark path
IVE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE THE MOVIE CAME OUT!!!!
The best thing that across the spiderverse made is that thing if you save someone life, than you are bad guy.
3:09 correction, the drug Raptur is actually just so incredibly addicting that it’s impossible to leave it. And Alcamax is the only supplier so there forcing him to keep working for them just to get more
2099 needs his own movie. In a live action style with his old look. that shows his start and rise to power.
na i actually thinking choosing miguel (instead of someone like superior) was a wise choice, hes far more tragic since he started out a good guy while superior was pretty malicious from the start. plus miguel's power set and stories already differ from the status quo which counteracts his argument against miles who's much closer to it which is super interesting imo
That is the most stupidest option I ever seen or heard in my life
The universe dieing changed him
2099 Spiderman in the Spiderverse movie made him angry. Maybe cause he lost everything.
There was an iteration in Ultimate Spider-Man. I feel like it was semi accurate.
I will be honest he's hotter in the comics
You know Spider-Verse 2099 is kinda iconic and he's great character but he's nothing like he was in the comics, he was giving me Scarlet Witch vibes 💀
