Lyrics:
Now in Vienna there's ten pretty women
There's a shoulder where Death comes to cry
There's a lobby with nine hundred windows
There's a tree where the doves go to die
There's a piece that was torn from the morning
And it hangs in the Gallery of Frost
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take this waltz with the clamp on it's jaws
Oh I want you, I want you, I want you
On a chair with a dead magazine
In the cave at the tip of the lily
In some hallway where love's never been
On a bed where the moon has been sweating
In a cry filled with footsteps and sand
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take its broken waist in your hand
This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz
With it's very own breath of brandy and Death
Dragging it's tail in the sea
There's a concert hall in Vienna
Where your mouth had a thousand reviews
There's a bar where the boys have stopped talking
They've been sentenced to death by the blues
Ah, but who is it climbs to your picture
With a garland of freshly cut tears?
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take this waltz it's been dying for years
There's an attic where children are playing
Where I've got to lie down with you soon
In a dream of Hungarian lanterns
In the mist of some sweet afternoon
And I'll see what you've chained to your sorrow
All your sheep and your lilies of snow
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay
Take this waltz, take this waltz
With its "I'll never forget you, you know!"
This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz ...
With its very own breath of brandy and death
Dragging its tail in the sea
And I'll dance with you in Vienna
I'll be wearing a river's disguise
The hyacinth wild on my shoulder
My mouth on the dew of your thighs
And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook
With the photographs there, and the moss
And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty
My cheap violin and my cross
And you'll carry me down on your dancing
To the pools that you lift on your wrist
Oh my love, Oh my love
Take this waltz, take this waltz
It's yours now. It's all that there is
{Instrumental}

My mom introduced me to this music years ago and she is 80 and recently diagnosed with Alzheimers. I would always dance kind of silly to make her laugh and its different now. She barely recalls the song and Mr. Cohen's voice was the one thing that I never thought she would forget. The last verse is for my dearest love, my Momma, Dorothy McCown. Take this waltz, take this waltz It's yours now, it's all that there is....
THANK YOU
Astonishing song😮
Thank you for uploading the lyrics.
Ahh, the magic of Lorca! Every word makes one dreamy...
Beautiful adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s poem « Little Viennese Waltz » by Leonard Cohen, God bless these men’s souls.
Muy bonita adaptación. Me gusta mucho Leonardo Cohen. Gracias.

That bit at the end where Jennifer Warnes joins him - STUNNING!
Literally my single most favourite line in any song, ever. If I had a daughter I'd name her Hyacinth Wilde
1990 driving from UK to the South of France to busk with my string trio. This album on tape in the car endlessly. Great memories ❤
Me ,too ❤❤❤❤
And we have the brilliant Spanish poet and playwright Gabriel Garcia Lorca to thank for the lyrics! Gorgeous violin part, whoever played that, and Jennifer Warnes, stunning!
His name is FEDERICO García Lorca. (1898-1936).
Always loved this tune and these lyrics. But for all my adoration, I simply cannot WAIT until Jennifer Warnes comes in with that second harmony. Sweet Jesus... a voice to die for. Recommend listening to her lead in Hair in 69, she would be around 22 at the time. That's one minute you won't be sorry spending on listening to vocals. God given talent.
There's a lot of beautiful songs about my home city, but this one without a doubt is my favourite.

This is a marvelous composition from Canada's master poet and songwriter. May Leonard Cohen rest in peace. ✌️🇨🇦

Well put
This song has always been so moving to me, even before i knew what the lyrics meant when i was a child.
I remember we had a CD (think we still do) of his music from this album. I would play it and dance in the living room with my mother or sisters with the lights dimmed. We played this one to relax a lot.
At the same time, this song is more about appriciating the moment than nostalgia.
Rest in Peace dear Mr. Leonard Cohen, your music has been gospel to many
Best lyric to a popular song ever ? Got to be close, I can't think of too many others that come close.
Always one of my favorites! Thank you Leonard ...a perfect melody to start my day with sunshine🌞🙂 Such fond memories!!!💖
A true master of language wonderful songs RIP
God i am so thankful for Leonard Cohen's perfect voice
This is my favorite Leonard Cohen song. It is reminiscent of Kurt Weill, a composer whose songs I have sung and loved.

Twoje zdrowie! ✌️
superb, sends me into a dream
Legend . RIP .

This song makes me want to name my daughter Hyacinth Wilde, just like Leonard named his own daughter Lorna (after the writer of the poem that inspired this song.)

Так вот, в Вене есть десять прекрасных женщин;
Там плечо, на которое Смерть приходит плакать;
И дерево, куда голуби прилетают, чтобы умереть;
Где тысячи людей обсуждают твои губы;
Потому что блюз приговорил их к смерти;
Возьми этот вальс;
Я буду танцевать с тобой в Вене;
Я буду выглядеть как река;
И мой рот в росе твоих бедер;
О любовь моя - возьми этот вальс;

About the lyrics, folks : is that really "to the pools that you lift on your wrist" ? Not "the pulse" ? I mean, I'm not a native English speaker, so it's just my guess...
Who came here after reading they both die at the end?

We danced on the beach in California
Surfed in the moonlit rain trust me when I say this??
we weren't waltzing in the sand. Noo I did NOT "DO IT"
Waiting for my honeymoon "rolls eyes"
Wrote my number in the sand
Time washed it away.
Staggered to to my plane
One kiss and I was TRULY blitzed
He actually kept my surfboard for me
I wonder where it is today.
