Therefore, if I understand Hagens correctly, the debt we rack up today will have to be repaid by greater energy consumption at some future point. But in a world where our collective dependence on depleting fossil fuel reserves remains at around 95%, there is some doubt that we will in fact have sufficient energy to generate the productive processess which should equate to the debt (regarded as a GDP correlate). In short, we are almost certainly loading that debt burden on to the shoulders of our children and grandchildren and therefore, as Hagens argues, within the next decade or two a "great simplification" (or 'de-complexification) will have to occur.

So it's over, in the past their was also high debt but the debt was compensated, by a strongly growing workforce and fast growing efficiency in production and ressource use, today workforce is shrinking and efficiency if it grows, it grows much more slowly as in the past. Also the overall RoI in Ressource extraction, is going down, you need to move ever more material to extract ressources, more rock in ore/coal extraction, drill deeper or in the ocean oil and gas. So everything is going more expensive and choking the economy. Also production decrease from climatechange and water overuse, in agriculture and in the wood industry. You will loose everything...
