Not sure if anyone will find this useful but, if for some reason when shaving the tape down on the wheel the clip comes out, you can press it back in to place. Don't try to slide it in, you'll just get frustrated. Place some of the clear section of the tape over where the clip goes and then just press it in. That's it.

Just some thoughts:
- the main problem with generic scotch tape is the adhesive used to creep out under it, and make the adjacent layers of tape stick to each other. Not a problem here, because there's no multiple layers of tape, but it still can make a mess if it contaminates the tape transport and heads. It also usually dries out quicker than splicing tape.
- 60 minutes or shorter tapes would probably be better for things like this, because they are much thicker, so more durable.
- 20:13 That "marketing material" is an important component of the cassette, it's the slip sheet. It reduces the friction between the tape rolls/hubs and the cassette shell. By removing them, you also make more "wiggle-room" for the tape and hubs, which might be a good thing in this application, I don't know.
Hey little short cut I thought i'd share with y'all.
When you're doing the annoying part of trying to get the tape in place, you can use some masking tape (put your finger on it multiple time so it gets less sticky).
What i do is, once iv'e got the bottom in place, I use tape to hold it there, and then it's really easy to get the rest in place.
Once I've cut the right size of tape, I put some weight (I used my phone for it) on the bottom part, and link up the two tape pieces with scotch tape without taking it off the "tape box" thingy. So you save a lot of time like this, you don't have to struggle to put it back in.

Absolute brilliant video, I have been wanting to try this for ages now and this has really inspired me. Excellent stuff. When making the 10 second tape though wouldn't be easier to me a note of the tape length for 10 second loops the just always cut the tape to that size first, would save having to fiddle about routing it around the tape in the first place.

Whoa! I never thought of overlapping the two ends of the tape and doing a single cut. I always did two cuts and tried to line them up. Sometimes I get shaky hands and the ends are a little crooked. Makes for good pops, clicks and warbles around the join :P

I just use a tiny drop of super glue to keep the reel part from sliding off.
cheers mate, a lot harder than the usual 5-sec. funny i actually spliced it while it was in position in the case, just taped parts of it down so it didn't unravel.... tricky tricky. I did it on an old cassette and the piece of tape looped really nicely (with a reverb pedal)... love when random bits of tape just work before uve erased em. vid on my channel

All I could think about during that video was either dropping in an LFO to control the speed or adding a CV port to control it. I imagine an LFO and a vactrol would be better, considering you can control the speed of the LFO. Anyway, thanks again 😁

@@User173 absolutely! It's a dream to have full control over wow and flutter. Anything commercial that might include that option is incredibly niche and expensive. I'm sure some version of the "vibrato" on old fender amps, or the univibe could control speed well 🤔✌️

I have to be very precise with the length of my loops. If they're too tight they won't play, if they're too loose they won't play either. The one you made here wouldn't play on any of my devices. I tend to make them a bit loose and see if they play, if they don't I put a layer of self-welding insulation tape on the reel. First of all it makes the reel bigger and the loop tighter, and also it gives the reel more grip to transport the tape. I can repeat this step until it plays. So far I haven't experienced the insulation tape reacting with the magnetic tape in any way.

Super helpful video! However, I ordered the splicing tape mentioned in the video and it did *not* work with my Porta02mkII. The tape at the splice point repeatedly got stuck in the capstans and essentially paused the tape even though the motor continued running and attempting to turn the reel. This issue did not happen with normal Scotch tape!

great video! I'm waiting the arrive of a Sony Varispeed and want to do some guitar/foley/environment loops with it. I have a maybe dumb question... The good thing is that when you do a loop you have a lot of spare tape to do other loops, but where to find the cassette enclosure, other than other cassettes already with the tape already in?
just buy new blank tapes. Discard the rolls of tape or you can buy new case enclosures at various online stores like tapeline.info etc.
Hm, you might know this by now as this video is almost 3 years old now, but I think what would be better for your machine, and more convenient for you, is putting the tape on the cassette tape itself instead of the erase head.
So after a few years of pondering and preparation I finally made my 10 second loops; damn, was I disappointed using original splicing tape. It's stiff as hell and therefore adding to the warble. If you're looking for that, great, but that wasn't my aim. Now I'm curious to know whether the scotch (magic?) tape is 1. less stiff, 2. will hold for a long period of time 3. doesn't react agressively to the cassette tape over time. Anyone with lengthy experience?
OP-1 is expensive, what could I use as an alternative and do you need the pedals? Totally new to this and want to get started. Appreciate any help B-)

Great question. The truth is we do this because the headroom on cassette and 4 tracks is lower and it gives a sort of compression/ and soft clipping that makes your sounds a little warmer and more.... compressed. There is a quality to tape that is lovely, plus you get that wow and flutter that so many guitar pedals try to mimic.

Hello, I just bought a second hand Tascam Porta II, I'm struggling with a similar problem, and I don't know If I'm doing something wrong or is the Cassette. When I press the Play Bottom, after a few seconds It stops, and It's like the tape doesn't corretly fit in the cassette recorder. I tried different tapes, but no one is a virgin one and they are all pre-recorded. I don't have a virgin one right now, can this be the problem? Also, when there is no tape in, If i press Play It doesn't stop. Thank you!

Thanks so much for this, I've been meaning to get into creating loops and I think this is the one tutorial for me. However, I do have a few questions... 1) I plan to run the loops on a Tascam 414, which according to the manual recommends Type II tapes, so chrome I believe. Are these Maxells Type I or II? And would it matter for the well-being of my machine? 2) How do you know what the back side and up side of the tape is? And I believe you put the magnetic side pointing upwards? 3) The 414 plays back at 2x the speed of a normal cassette deck. Does that mean that the loop time will also be 2x shorter? So 2.5 secs instead of 5, and 5 seconds instead of 10? 4) Last question... I've seen people cover up the erase head on the cassette itself instead of on the deck. Is there a difference? Sorry for all the questions, but I would love to know this before I start splicing.
Hey Roman. I'm glad you found my tutorial useful. you are going to have a lot of fun. 1) you can use type II or I, it'll be fine. 2) the tape will naturally curl the direction it's supposed to be installed since it was spooled around a wheel. so just install it the way it wants to bend. 3.) Yes the 414 will play back faster. 4) as long as the erase head does not touch the tape, it should be protected from erasing, so yes, I don't see a reason why you couldn't do that, however the head presses in to the cassette, so I don't know if it will work if you cover the cassette as it might prevent the head from pressing forward in to the cassette.
You make this look so easy! I’m goin nuts once I cut the tape. I can’t figure how to keep it from curling so I can get to the right length then cut it again.

Yeah - I finally figured out how to properly handle the tape. I completed my first loop but didn’t have enough slack for it to spin. I’ll get it eventually. I thought I was going crazy. Thanks for the the wonderful tutorial!

you can try it! I don't have any familiarity with it, so yeah. Just try it. tapes are cheap. you never know and maybe you find a better solution?
Hi, I made a tape loop today and all worked fine...don't know how long I let the loop play but when I took out the tape, the magnetic layer was completely gone and the whole tape was clear, except the spot where the scotch tape was...
did I make a mistake or is it because of wear and playing the loop too long?

wow, I've never heard of that before. How long did you let it run? What tape machine are you using? how old is the tape that you made a loop of? some old tapes just fall apart. but it would required your tape to be backwards and the pinch roller to be actively removing the magnetic tape.
This tutorial is fantastic thank you so much. I’ve been running into an issue with a gap in sound at the splice head, and have tried everything I can think of (45 degree cuts, taping over erase head, etc). I’m using the same tape as you are in the video (except it’s 60 min), and have made at least 10 seemingly clean loops which all have the same cut out at the splice head. Wondering if you have any thoughts?
I'm assuming that you covered the erase head with masking tape? if so, how long is the silence gap? If you've covered the right head, then you should only get a minor blip when it starts over. if you have a second long gap, then you haven't covered the erase head properly.
Yes I have covered the erase head and the gap is just a blip but it is still pretty distracting. I have tried a few different types of tape / 4 tracks with differing luck, but still a noticeable blip with everything so far.
@@alaska5290 ah yeah, that's something you have to finesse to get right. That's generally a problem with the signal jumping across the 0v crossing and causing a pop/ blip. Plus the splice will cause a little blip as well. Most people actually enjoy this and work with it. If you check out Blankfor_ms on youtube, he's actually just done a recent video about how to use the blip to your advantage. you should check it out if you have not. (ruclips.net/video/t9WlEsx3-og/видео.html) but I basically use reverb, delay, etc. Those effects will smooth that blip out nicely.

maybe try the pause button first, then click stop. that's generally how I do it.

Very nice tutorial! I was able to make both versions of the loop tapes first try! BUT: when I cover the leftside head of my Tascam Porta 07 with masking tape I can no longer record anything. Any idea why?
I'm not familiar with the Tascam Porta 07 and I just tried to find an online manual but it doesn't appear to be available without purchasing one. My guess is the the head you are covering is not the erase head? or it's some combo of erase and record? I'd have to find a manual to see exactly what's different about that one.
@@User173 Thank you for your answer and your efforts. I also tried to find a manual...to no avail. Tried again, this time I was lucky. It says: 4-channel record/play head (permalloy), 4-channel erase head (ferrite). And they look exactly like the ones on your Porta 02. I don't understand it...
This is a great tutorial. Despite my many attempts with scotch tape, I have yet to make a functioning loop. I see that you're using what looks to be a 3.8mm splice tape reel. I can't find this for sale anywhere, only 1/4" for Open Reel. What do splice tape do you recommend I get for this project? I'm making progress but it's super frustrating having failed for the 10th time
hmm, I bought mine on amazon. I guess it's not sold anymore? well, I promise the scotch tape will work, but what problem are you specifically having with scotch tape? Is it just breaking? if so, the tape may be too tight. also, some scotch tape is different and made to not rip or tear what they stick to, make sure it's not that kind.
@@User173 I eventually found and ordered some splicing tape, though it's not the blue tape you use and we'll see how that works. The scotch I was using didn't hold very well, and the tension seemed to pull the splice. I've thought about trying to splice it using an 8mm film archival tape splice technique - but that would cover both sides of the mag, creating a clipping sound on playback. I've gotten the tension to at least begin playing the tape, but it doesn't keep working. Thanks for your input and amazing video! I'm looking forward to contributing to the loop scene, hopefully soon!
@@NoahChubb Glad you found some! Some other words of warning are that for some reason, the tapes work best in tascams. the fostex x12 that I have is excellent, but it will suddenly get stuck at the splice point and stop playing. I've not been able to figure out why. I've cleaned the capistan, the pinch roller was replaced, still, every one of my fostex x12's do it. Hope you'll be using a tascam :D

hey great video!! so useful!! i have a small but annoying problem - whenever i open a tape up (bc im reusing second hand ones) and i have to kind of prise it open a bit even after taking the screws out and the metal bit with the pressure pad on it always bursts right out and i cannot work out how to put it back, it just doesn't seem to slot in properly and as a result nothing plays back after i record stuff onto the loop, helppppp
I'm not sure I understand completely. But it sounds like it pops open after prying it open and then you lose track of where the tape goes? If you watch my video and pause it at the right times, you can have a good look at how it goes together. that should help. Just make sure the tape isn't backwards, because it won't play or record on the opposite side. Let me know if you get it worked out!
@@User173 no i mean i've put the tape itself in fine, its just the little metal bit with the felt pressure pad that pops out and i cant put it back!
@@nuschb274 Oh that happens to me all the time. haha. you just have to place it so that it can act as a spring. there should be two little grooves where it fits into. it's sort of difficult to place, but once you have it in there, then carefully put the lid back on and tighten. make sure that the tape runs in front of that little felt piece.

Hi, there should be track selection controls on your 424, make sure you are switching which track you are recording to.
Dude! Im going insane trying to get ONE to work. I've seriously done over 10 and not one is good. I tried for 3 hours today and couldn't even get one that would even keep moving. The best ones I've made wil play for a few seconds and just stop.
One of them broke my Sony TC WE405 dual tape deck! Both sides!!
I even ordered a splicing kit! It might be these cheap tapes I got, I dunno. I screw it shut and its got the wrong side out because the tape looks identical on both sides. But mostly I cant get the damn length right. How does Amulets just make these all day long???? Theres gotta be some major shit I'm overlooking.
where do you get the tapes you're using? The ones that have no external markings. I see a lot of people using these, but only new tapes I can find are ONN brand from Walmart.
I went online at Amazon and purchased maxell 90 min cassettes. then I just remove the filler packaging.

You discarded the plastic on the inside, do you put it back?
That's a great question, thanks for asking. I would advise keeping the plastic just in case. I discard mine normally, but I have a few on hand because sometimes, depending on how you run the tape loop, it can slip over the wheel and get messed up. I find that in this case (usually with the ten second versions) that the plastic insert helps prevent that. does this make sense?

Any idea how folk are making 30+ second looptapes?
I have 30 second and two minute ones from Tapeline but they look the same as the basic 5 sec ones. I know something must be going on but I just don't know what ):
not unless you buy a special case. Open up one of your tape loops from tapeline and I assure you they are molded differently so that they can wind around themselves several times. It's not possible as a DIY unless you buy their special cases for winding longer infinite loops.
Thanks for the great tutorial! I have done what you have instructed and I have run into a problem. I hope you or some else can help me over come this issue. I have a Tascam Porta-Studio 464 as well as an old standard stereo cassette player. When I pop the loop tape into the standard cassette player it runs at the regular speed. But when I pop it into the Tascam and press play it runs really fast. Like fast forward fast! I've tried re-looping several different times and I always get the same issue. I suspect the Tascam is not liking something. Does it only work on the Tascam Porta02 Mkii? Have you or anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a work around? Thanks in advance! The 464 might have a faster motor speed like the 414 does. If you check the online documentation you might find out that it does not run at regular tape speed. but if it's running at FFD fast, that's not right. I'd have to see a video to determine what might be wrong with it. but I suspect it's that the motor is like the 414 and 424 and plays much faster than the porta 02mkii

From what I can hear, regular tapes play at regular speed (same pitch as when played in a standard cassette player) so I think the motor speed is standard (apart from the ability to switch from NORMAL to HIGH speed or using the PITCH dial). @@01mkultra it sounds to me like that particular brand of tascam has some issue with it. I've never experience that. my tape loops work on porta 02mkii, 414, 414 mkii, 424, and on fostex x12, as well as regular tap boom boxes. so I honestly have no idea what could be going on? if you want to send me a video I'd be happy to watch it and see if I can gather anything from it. can you send it to user173000 at gmail?

it's not minutes, it's just seconds. these are 5 and 9 second loops.
the 5 second tape loop is more like a 3second loop, right?
no, it's 5 seconds. depends on the speed of your motor, however. Tascam 414 uses a faster motor than the porta 02, so speed will vary depending on which you're using. also, some 4 tracks have variable resistors inside, like the fostex x12, which can result in faster speed if it's "tuned" up.

@@MrKouk0s ah, yes well there is the difference. The 414 and 414 mk 2 both operate at a higher RPM. if you were to put a standard tape in there, of say billy idol, you'd hear it play at almost double speed. The manual says that their RPM is higher than that of a standard cassette recorder.

@@monkebetao ok, no you are not dumb. Lol. Yes you can change it later. Tape is just magnetically arranged particles and can be rearranged at any time. If you took a magnet to a tape, you'd erase all the info on it by scrambling the particles.

Oh, also I have a bad temper and I get furious after a while! I use cuss words, I yell, I yell cuss words. I swear I'm never touching a tape again. I dont even know what I'm saying! when I'm in a rage state! I think I make cuss words up. I curse people's mothers to get violated in their back side! Horrible language!. Abominations. Blasphemies against God!. I scream the dollar amounts of what it has all cost and I feel ashamed for spending what I have. I'm sickened by these stupid tapes! They were supposed to be a fun hobby, a creative outlet, and a way to explore the world of sound. What analogue hell is this???!!!!
