It was the "customer's lucky day" after calling an honorable tech.
Why is it a good thing to install an "el cheapo" made in China capacitor in lieu of installing a USA made capacitor? The US made Amrad cap is the original that lasted 19 years. The cost difference is a $15.
@@JM-ib9kb I agree. Those Chinese capacitors are garbage. The Turbo200s are the best capacitors in my opinion. One size fits all basically and they're made in Florida. Anytime I open up a panel and see one of those in there it's always full of juice even after 10-15 years.
Hi Ted, Rheem did use Amrad capacitors in those old systems. It even has Rheem on the label on that Amrad capacitor that you were holding in this video.
thank you man.. you just saved my bacon. I accidentally unplugged one of the wires loosening the capacitor and I stupidly didn't take a picture. I appreciate you.. high 5 good sir
For some reason I kind of like these and the 10 seer classic. I can't stand taking top and sides off for cleaning but I've seen a few take a beating. Big thanks for getting me in on the E list!
You could also do complete turns with your refrigeration wrench when doing pump downs. Also, changing compressor was a breeze. I wish they brought this design back
This design was the best thing to ever come out of a rheem factory. My dad has 1 like this from '06 and I did it's 1st ever maintenance a few weeks ago just because I wanted to see how well it was working. The result was "better than some new units"
we have a rheem unit from 1993 at our house, looks similar. it has the original plastic cased capacitor and it is still running fine, besides one room which was added on to the house in the 1970s which for some reason has no central air so i have a chrysler window shaker in there.
I ran into a unit like this from 1979 a few weeks ago. It was running better than most new units I see. Customer has never added freon before and it still had an 18° drop
What was the capacitor rating you used for the replacement?......The Amrad has an odd set of numbers... 40/3. Did you use a 40/5 ? Maybe a 40/3 ?.... please advise as I need a replacement for a WAKA-labelled unit with the same specs as your RAKA unit you showed the label for. It seems "R" in RAKA stands for Rheem after they bought out Weatherking....and the "W" stands for Weatherking....but it then seems the unit you're working on is the same as mine.
ahh, the old setup maxchines, more than not I have found the capacitor "cans" rusted through from being exposed tot eh weather and dog/s whizzing. the cases rust outside to in and "fluid" leaks out done....
My compacitor only has tt10000 from aerovox sh1238 plastic gray piece. No label for mfd or vac. I have the same unit. So which compacitor should i buy to replace?
are all those rheem usually 40/3 caps? mine has no label and i bought a 55/5 for it, not yet installed but i was wondering if going higher is better than going lower?? Please advice
@@devoted73arte no but usually going bigger is always better than going too small, i ended yup going 410 and my new unit uses a smaller cap no sure the specs tho
I just paid 225 to have the capacitor swapped on my Rudd, and I told the guy I thought it was the capacitor. That seems like a lot to pay for 15 minutes work. The last capacitor lasted three years (come to think of it they swapped it out three years ago but the unit was still running)... So, are you guys using a voltmeter to test it, or some kind of capacitor tester?. Capacitors I’m familiar with have two terminals, why does this one have four? Which makes me not understand how to make sure it’s discharged before I touch it.. The invoice said; Dual Run Capacitor 40+5 MFD @ 440 Volts.. is this all the info I need to buy one from Amazon?
So there are apparently two capacitors; One for the fan and one for the compressor. But it seems like in this case there should only be three terminals if there is a common.. can someone help me understand so I don’t EF it up somehow, LOL.
I found a video on testing capacitors. So I have to remove all the wires and either use an ohmmeter or an actual capacitor tester (which my multi meter does have).
I have the same AC unit. The old capacitor I'm replacing has 3 poles on H (brown) and C (purple) and 2 poles on FAN (orange). The new capacitor I got only has 1 pole on FAN. What do I do with the second orange FAN wire if there's no second pole on the FAN terminal?? Where do the FAN wires go? One to fan motor and the other to T3 on the contactor? Thank you!
** SOLVED ** The simple fact that you said "two wires on the common terminals is typical with Rheem" (in other words), led me to dig in deeper to the wiring scheme. Apparently, the 2 common wires were incorrectly placed on the FAN terminal instead of the Common terminal. Now it makes sense why the new capacitor only has 1 pole on the FAN terminal. Works fine now. You unintentionally saved me!
Nick Stosz .... that sucks. How old is your system? Mine is 20 yrs old Rheem Classic 10 Seer 2.5Ton. If the compressor went out, I would have to replace everything. Compressors are $500-$1,000 plus installation. Good luck to you. Hope it goes well.
Dont see Units running for 20yrs like this anymore, and new capacitors don't last like the old ones, especially the Baker Chinese ones, I've been stocking and slinging Mars for the past year.
Thats why I don't even give customers an option, they get what I have. I've learned that nobody gives a shit, they just want their equipment fixed and they want it now
that cap was replaced 100% after the original failed form case rust, outside to in and oil leaked out until it failed, someone installed that cap in july 1999...
No, not a replacement from OEM...look closely....the build date of the cap = the build date of the AC unit....AND...the AMRAD label shows BOTH an AMRAD part number AND a Rheem part number.....seems Rheem/Weatherking used AMRAD caps as OEM then.
@@TheWilferch yeah, it seems I commented on the wrong video and I'm sure not going back four years to figure out which/who's video the comment was for. lol it was meant for way older units with the gray painted steel capacitors, which did rust from outside in before leaking th eoil out and failing.
"Hopefully Brad's not watching and chiding me for a cap-n-go"....is this confirmation that pros simply want to charge more for extra work or simply extra margin?....no wonder folks like buying these caps for $12 - $40 and making it DIY......instead of paying ( like SOME folks on YT channels say) maybe $200-$800 for such service !!!!

19 year Old Rheem still cooling. Won't be long,Ted
My fan runs outside but not cooling and is much quieter than usual. Would that be a capacitor?
It more than likely is. The capacitor on the compressor side is likely dead. If that’s not it, you’ve got a bad problem if the outside fan is spinning
Thwy finally got it figured out, the compressor had a dead spit in it and wouldnt start. New one on the way
