This documentary clearly shows the difficulty for we Africans to overcome the weight of tradition to get us out of our actual condition. If we add to this the jealousy between us due to poverty you will understand that what this man has done is clearly phenomenal considering the limited means, hunger and water scarcity. "A falling tree makes more noise than a forest that grows." Do not under estimate the seed of good because it is still planted in the most fertile land. This is a man of great faith and we should all learn from him.

An inspiration - Yacouba shows that individuals can make a difference if they marry a powerful idea with belief, consistent action and infinite patience.

He is so cool in person. Defying unhelpful criticism by just carrying on doing what he believed would help his barren land. He has proven to many others that nothing can stop you from achieving your dream.

There is a lot of ancient knowledge that is simply ignored by the modern world. I wish that prisoners in western countries were used as a labour force to reforest our deserts. This man Yacouba has helped to change the world to be a better place. Someone rich should donate some money to let him buy back a piece of the desert, I heard he needs $20000.

Does anybody know if this man's work is being supported? It appears that at the time this film/video was made that he was receiving minimal support. I wonder what miniscule fraction of the cost of an F-22 it would cost to support him, his family, and his work? Perhaps the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation would consider helping him.

+Brooks Anderson I agree totally - The problem is that most of the foreign aid does not go to efforts like this, or have the interest for that matter - they only focus on patching up a wound so too speak and not give people the knowledge on how to survive on their own. Focus should be on teaching people like Yacouba does - "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man how to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime"

    • @brooksanderson2599

Fredrik Wickberg Yes. By the time governments act, the Sahel, North Africa, and much of the middle East will fall into chaos It's happening now. Just look at the refugee flood into Southern Europe. The effective way would be an NGO, or quicker yet, individuals like the Gates to sponsor him and his son. Talk about getting your money's worth.

We all have the ability to do something about the fix we are in in this world. We need to plant in the built deserts of towns & cities all over the world & plant the deserts. We DO have the power to do something about global warming. If ordinary people world wide get together in their own area. We do not need governments to do this. It just needs one or two persons to convene a meeting of other locals.
There should not be any unemployed people at this time. All should be working to do something about global warming. There should be work for all doing this.
In the U.K people recieving unemployment benefits are required to apply for a lot of jobs. This does nothing to reduce unemployment. It just means more & more people are applying for the same limited number of jobs. This is devastating the mental health of claiments. Repeated rejections eat away at the mind & badly affect physical health.
We could turn this situation around. Halve the number of job applications people are required to make & instead require them to spend at least one day a week working to combat global warming. People would feel much better about themselves & this would reduce health problems, substance abuse & crime. Roles could range from advising people about how to make their household more environmentally friendly to digging up an area of concrete & planting trees & fruit bushes.
This could be a win-win situation. We do not have to sit here like a load of rabbits stuck in headlights.
Planting in towns would not only help to create resilience against flooding & calm winds, it would improve air quality, improve mental health, reduce crime, baffle noise from roads & make them more attractive also suitable areas no matter how small could be put to food production. Giving people small allotments, rather than the old fashioned big ones would enable people to have a place out doors where they could get exercise.

the challenge now is to maintain peoples awareness about how important the forest even single tree, because the forest everything and everyone is back to the abandoned land, that's cause people cut trees for home and others. In indonesia, there is mbah sadiman who create 100 hectare forest 11000 trees start from 1996 until now. Just like Yacouba, peoples said that Sadiman is crazy. Now days, they drink water and eat food from him.

Believe it or not, making films cannot be done for free, and independently produced docs rarely make a profit. We are not the evil money - grabbers your post implies.
