Austin you are missing a big piont here. The idea of this phone is not only that it is modular. The materiale used for this phone is all FairTrade, wich means most of the metals like gold, copper and kobolt are from mines where the workers have good working standards and good salary. No kids has worked 12 hours a day just so you could get a stupid smartphone. The point is that its good for the environment and all the materials can be recycled and used in like radios and tv's. You pay for a clean phone.
TheEthan8or what? dude fair trade isn't just for food. fair trade is a label that can be awarded to any goods so long as it's fair for the workers right at the bottom of the chain, like miners, factory workers and yes farmers too
How do you ignore the biggest selling point of the phone, the reason it's called Fairphone, the fact that it's not made with conflict minerals or the workers at factories killing themselves like the iPhone assemblers. It's as much about being an ethical phone as a modular one.
The Idea behind the Fairphone isn't its modularity. Its about building a phone which is build with conflict free recourses and good working conditions while caring about the environment. Thats also the reason why its modular. So you can recycle each part easily on its own and so you don't have to throw away you whole phone when one part is broken. They want you to keep it longer than a "normal" smartphone. It would be great if you clear this up at least on twitter. This video doesn't do the phone justice...
It's unusual that Austin is so badly prepared for a phone review that he didn't even go through the effort to find out exactly WHY it's called "Fair"phone.
I'd settle for specs little bit higher then Samsung s5. and if it has to be quad core then at least min 2.8ghz. rather 3gz. unless it can have octa core than 2.5ghz
*I don't think Austin understands what's the idea behind this phone.* The main idea on this phone was actually to make a *fair produced* and *substainable* phone. That's why it costs so much.
Why would they make the price higher when the phone wasn't even assembled yet? That doesn't make sense, 'cause DIY smartphone should actually cost less because you're just buying the parts but build your own desired phone by yourself.
@Trumpalumpa Oh yeah, because everytime you gonna make a phone call, you gonna think about this fair production???? Dude, get over it, customer doesn't give a f***, they want functionnality!!!!
This is exactly how Google should have implemented Ara. The phone is likely more expensive as their website says they use conflict free minerals (though I don't believe you can truly ever have up to some level). They could have combined this with stock Nexus software and ran likely THE flagship phone if it was implemented correctly.
I don't know what happened with Google, they took this awesome concept and made it about being able to hotswap your components and having them fit all over the phone, instead they could have done it more like this, yeah having the ability to select between a range of different components, and it was a bunch of cool ideas they had, but first and foremost it was about making your average phone a lot more easily repairable, I don't have a problem with turning off my phone to change a component..
Medallish Ok. The idea failed because google wanted to make more money. Think about it if you want a better CPU in a smartphone you have to buy an entirely new phone for 800£, with project ARA instead if you want a faster CPU and you're ok with the rest it would've set you up 80-120£
A bowl of Miso soup I wouldn't say that. There isn't really a need for 1440p and up on such a small screen. Especially since it can kill battery. The quality of the panel matters a lot more
Now Austin, not to be insulting, but the repeated comparison to flagship smartphones and the fact you never even emphasized on why this thing is called "FAIRphone" in the first place make me think you sort of missed the point of this. And no, it's point is NOT to be modular alone...
EVERY phone manufacturer that is part of the EICC (which is like ALL the big ones) have the same kinds of programs like the "Conflict Free Minerals" and Fair labor (NO Child Labor and NO 7 days a week work schedules, amongst other aspects)
If this is true, which I don't think, but if, then you can definitely suppose that this has no effect to the working conditions. On a brandnew iPhone 7 you can almost smell the small childrens blood...
Felix Teupke, Apple does NOT employee a child labor force, the majority of there chinese workers are Males age 18-30, there is a video on RUclips of a guy who got employeed at one and he discusses things.
Finkel - Funk The main point of it is to be a phone. The second point is that it's modular. The effect of their plan is that it's good for the environment and for the people. If a lot of people don't buy this phone then it won't fucking matter and the company goes under then there was no point.
However he forgets why it's called a fairphone. It's priced as such since the parts are gotten outside of conflict areas and is meant to be ethical, which is more expensive because buying materials in conflict areas is much cheaper.
That one dude who posts stuff, virtually EVERY major phone maker (and most devices these days) is a member of the EICC and part of there thing is the Conflict Free Minerals and most have other programs regarding labor in the factories that make the devices including things like NO Child Labor, abiding by the labor laws of the country the plants are in, no excessive overtime and other things, this company is simply trying to sell you on something that ALL companies are doing now, kinda like those Shell gas station commercials where they talk about the fuel detergents and stuff they "add" to the gas, those fuel detergents are federally mandated to be in ALL gas and has been that way for decades but they advertise it like they are the only ones doing it, educate yourself so you don't fall victim to companies that try to overcharge you because they are being more "green/friendly/organic" or any other line a company tries to sell you to get you to chose them over another based on how they do business.

I love this idea. Cell phones need to be modular. I have a dream that one day we can build our own smart phones, just as we can build our own computers.
thing is,pc users are usually more interested in doing stuff like that, candy crush/clash of clan users on the other hand aren't really interested on making their own phones.
Some people like pre-built items much better but considering the fact that the average consumer demands a yearly upgrade over their last flagship changing certain modules of the device to ones beneficiaries can really help. Also the fact that these parts are more eco-friendly it can really help with the environment and recycling.
The best thing is not the fact that it's modular but that it uses materials that has been gathered fairly, and it doesn't hurt the environment as much as other phones!!!
thats because people expect MODERN flagship performance at this price point, why would they "upgrade" to a modular phone that is a DOWNGRADE from there current device in terms of specs?
I would only consider a modular smartphone if parts weren't proprietary. The Fairphone 2 is great if you break something, but do you really think they'll update anything once the Fairphone 3 is announced? Standardized sockets/form factors would allow true future proofing at a competitive price and open up a world of possibilities to third party developers. You might even see people building their own phones like they do PC's, although sizing would be trickier.
Austin, its meant to be more of a fairly made phone hence the name. Not to be able to take it apart. The materials are obtained in "fair" ways and the labor of putting the phone together is avoided. Just my thoughts though
@@tomspcalt159 yeah £750 is definitely cheap, the pixel 3 or something comes with a amoled that 1080, pretty standard stuff, and my pixels camera is on par, first gen pixel
Yes, but don't. It'll be like the iPhone 7 (which is actually suprisingly decent other than that. rather use a 3G[S] running iOS 4.1 just because headphone jack , but it works for anything. except for listening to your music. or watching youtube. or using headphones to mute the alarm because you do not feel like unlocking it. or anything else ever made for the headphone jack, like some selfy sticks. ok its dumb lol)
I've got my Fairphone 2 five days ago. It's a really solid phone and just a charm to use. Everything works and feels snappy. The only thing that is bad is the camera, but I expected that and it doesn't bother me. Still, it would be cool to have an option for an improved camera later. The battery seems to outlive the Nexus 5x from my girlfriend. All in all it's a really competitive phone even without the whole fair and modular aspect. Nevertheless the mindset behind the Fairphone 2 is a huge selling point. Everything in this phone (hardware and software) is as progressive as it can get when it comes to long term thinking. We need a commercial strategy for fairer and more sustainable electronics. Fairphone totally delivered with the second iteration. Huge Letdowns: -The Price -Cheap backcover -Too big for many people -Overrated longevity (next snapdragon is out, android M announced, 5G in the working) -Bad camera/camera chip
TheBlinkstyKrab thought this was funny, but the iPhone 7 screen is decent. it's probably the one not bad thing about the phone. even though it lacks resolution and the crispness of the s8 screen, it is ridiculously color accurate for an LCD. not the best, but definitely not bad. though I'm only referring to the 1080p plus model. the 750p is a joke
Same, I don't have problems with apple users mostly unless they act like iSheep. I honest have to admit I kinda like the 7plus but the regular model is just embarrassing I mean come on, a 750p display with a super low PPI.
Skeleton 11223 Yeah but you are paying over $700 for a "flagship" you want it to have everything up to date. If you dont need a serious phone get a mid range phone.
Money Bags It is still kind of an exaggeration. What is that resolution useful for? It's an LCD; it doesn't have the diamond matrix that an amoled has, so it is actually quite close to a 1080p amoled in terms of sharpness. Plus, it's just 4.7 inch. 1080p would be mostly for bragging rights. You can't notice the difference at arm's length, just when you look very close. It's also common knowledge that iPhones aren't the type of phones you buy if you want the best raw specs on the planet.
Zack Conflict Free you say? I’m pretty sure everything used to make this phones was picked up in some country at war in Africa and then smuggled into some other neighboring African country with no active wars, where it can be sold “legally”. “Conflict Free” is just some shady marketing stunt used by companies to look less exploitative and more “friendly”
Jonas Bartkowski And you have to take some company’s word for it. Yep, no shady business going on here It’s a for-profit society, of course it’s gonna try to do stuff the most cost-effective way. Which in this case means buying prime materials from countries in conflict by smuggling them into allegedly “peaceful countries”. That’s actually a lot cheaper than recycling. To sum up, I don’t buy into Intel’s “Conflict Free” bullshit, so I don’t believe the guys that made this phone either.
Upgrade the RAM to 3 or 4, upgrade to a 4K recording camera. Is there a sim and SD or dual sim or a combo of the 3, break the screen from 720p to 1080p or 1440, bigger cell battery for extended life. the combinations! Its like a digital Lego set!
I actually like the idea. What it would take me to buy one: -I'd like to have multible parts to chose from (e.g. a 1080p display and a 4k display or a basic camera vs. a high end camera) -I'd like the company to release new core modules every now and then, with newer specs -I'd like the phone to be as thin as possible while still having all it's properties -a price that doesn't make me feel bad, although i understand why it costs that much
It looks like an LCD panel too. As they make more parts, you might be able to, say, swap the 8MP main camera for a 50MP one, or a 120Hz OLED display, or a larger battery.
Cool but this only works if the continue making new modules. This smells more like a dead product. Just because you can swap modules, doesn't mean you ever will be able to.
Here 2019 there is a new camera module with 12 MP for 45€. It will only work and continue if people support it. It will be my next phone for sure, do you want to give it a try? Having a slim phone is so 2014. In 2019 you need to care for the future. ;)
I think that the most important thing about this phone is that it does not use minerals extracted from conflict zones and nobody has been exploited during his building. For that is expensive. The profit for sale is 9 €. Anyway thank you for show us the modular part!
I would probably buy this if it were available in the US on the Verizon network. I do think having great support and lots of upgrade options would make this a truly killer phone. Adding in water resistance would be a great bonus as well!
I use the fairphone 2. And I had the Fairphone 1 before that (I broke that one). And It does everything I need it to do, even if it hasn't got the most amazing specs you'll see. I do think, that it is a bit on the expensive side though :( Anyway, feel free to ask me questions if you want to know anything about it!
But of course, a big bit of what you are paying is because a large ammount of the materials are sourced from conflict free mines and they have a big emphacies on fair payments for the workers
When I got it, it had Android 5.1, a few moths ago they released a Update to Android 6, so it isn't the newest available version, but there are regular updates for security patches and other fixes
Long story short, I was out of power and thought why not put the battery of my digicam into the back of the phone... I realised to late that it was 7.4 instead of 3.7 Volts, so that's compleatly my fault... No Smartphone is protected against such overvoltage
I love his Tokidoki Hatsune Miku shirt! As for this phone, I don't see a place in the market for a phone like this. Phones are cheap enough these days, if you need to swap something out, usually you'll want to just buy a new one for all the other upgrades anyway.
You have missed a big point which is not only been modular, but also respectful with the environment and that supports certain conflict regions in africa
Modular smartphones are only useful if the platform cannot possibly improve (i.e., the frame), which it likely would. This would inevitably mean the modules you bought have reached obsolescence and can no longer be used in favor of a superior, newer line of modules.
I think a good compromise would be a normal smartphone you could disassemble AND reassemble without a ridiculous risk of completely screwing it up and get parts for.
A modular smartphone is a great idea... I think it would be beneficial to have a motherboard and a shell that come together, then the parts can be labeled based on size ranges so if you have a slimmer motherboard/shell then you know what range will fit... On the site you could then choose what motherboard you want (base price) then add things to the purchase like cameras and other parts, and the shell could even allow other attachments here too. Just makes sense to me.
good idea. I would buy it a piece at a time then put it together. also if they come out with updated modules then I don't mind not being on the bleeding edge. haveing better battery life and internal processing would be the two big things for most people I imagine, maybe redesign the front and rear facing camera modules so you could in effect interchange them so you could have two high-end cameras or two low-end ones or just swap the high quality to the front if that is what you use more. Modularity means very little without options. so the more customization you can bring to the table the more likely people will pay for it. From an engineering and design perspective that is a nightmare, but it is what will make it good.

Another HUGE issue is it supports only 3 of the countless lte bands (3,7,20). Also in 2019, there are only replacement pieces and no further models
Still better than my phone
I love this idea. Cell phones need to be modular. I have a dream that one day we can build our own smart phones, just as we can build our own computers.
Joshua K I have a dream...
Joshua K you can build your own smart phones the hard part is giving it an os i gave my phone the wrong os now i cant root it.
thing is,pc users are usually more interested in doing stuff like that, candy crush/clash of clan users on the other hand aren't really interested on making their own phones.
Some people like pre-built items much better but considering the fact that the average consumer demands a yearly upgrade over their last flagship changing certain modules of the device to ones beneficiaries can really help. Also the fact that these parts are more eco-friendly it can really help with the environment and recycling.
zarif I played mobile games and i love pc and programming
*♪Do you want to build a smartphone?♫*
no cause im too lazy
Darkfire Blast no
I believe I can build a phone.... I believe I will break the phone...
Darkfire Blast *cringe*
Is this a wierd Frozen reference?
The best thing is not the fact that it's modular but that it uses materials that has been gathered fairly, and it doesn't hurt the environment as much as other phones!!!
Thanks great explanation about how to build this phone.
Now you probably would have made the phone ryt ? Did you ?
Can you build Austin Evans? ;) :)
his dad too

Bubbles you clearly don't know shit
Aus Daes CLEARLY ;;;;;;)
Less than half the people who were begging for a modular phone will buy this.
No one buys it.
thats because people expect MODERN flagship performance at this price point, why would they "upgrade" to a modular phone that is a DOWNGRADE from there current device in terms of specs?
Modular phones are Apple's worst nightmare.
Just my thoughts though
but what if u upgrade all of the parts, is it still the same phone or a new phone?
Same phone? Sort-of somewhat similar, right?
Really though, probably will be considered by most new, but by some same because BIOS and device-locking.

I'm sorry did I see 1080p, when was the XR designed?
a mystery the XR was designed to be cheap. If you expected top of the line specs then you were wrong to begin with
@@tomspcalt159 yeah £750 is definitely cheap, the pixel 3 or something comes with a amoled that 1080, pretty standard stuff, and my pixels camera is on par, first gen pixel
@@fewik8567 cheap to produce not the selling price 😂
I wanted to review this phone; however, not because of the modularity but because of the ethics behind it
So.....Can you remove the headphone jack
Yes, but don't. It'll be like the iPhone 7 (which is actually suprisingly decent other than that. rather use a 3G[S] running iOS 4.1 just because headphone jack , but it works for anything. except for listening to your music. or watching youtube. or using headphones to mute the alarm because you do not feel like unlocking it. or anything else ever made for the headphone jack, like some selfy sticks. ok its dumb lol)
Andre Joseph iPhone is shit now
no headphone jack
John J1101 the iphone 6 had a headphone jack
Huge Letdowns:
-The Price
-Cheap backcover
-Too big for many people
-Overrated longevity (next snapdragon is out, android M announced, 5G in the working)
-Bad camera/camera chip
Don't they sell a better camera for the phone?
its alright but nothing groundbreaking
no they probably sell a better camera when all the other phones will have 20MP they will upgrade to 13MP.
WTF- What's This Friday If this phone becomes popular then maybe they'll sell better upgrades.
The 5x bootlooped didn't it
The screen still shines over the iPhone 7.
It's also common knowledge that iPhones aren't the type of phones you buy if you want the best raw specs on the planet.
the resolution might be crap but the screen it self is a brilliant panel probably the best LCD panel out there.
Watching Austin Evans help me get smarter technology wise
Austin you fucked up dude, admit it. Pretty much ignored it main selling point - as other comments have pointed out.
Ethical one
This might be the next step to gaming cellphones
Zack Conflict Free you say? I’m pretty sure everything used to make this phones was picked up in some country at war in Africa and then smuggled into some other neighboring African country with no active wars, where it can be sold “legally”. “Conflict Free” is just some shady marketing stunt used by companies to look less exploitative and more “friendly”
Jose Berenguel Noguera The whole point of this phone is basically that it's not.
Jonas Bartkowski And you have to take some company’s word for it. Yep, no shady business going on here
It’s a for-profit society, of course it’s gonna try to do stuff the most cost-effective way.
I was hoping it was the Google Ara...

Nathan Hello same
Upgrade the RAM to 3 or 4, upgrade to a 4K recording camera. Is there a sim and SD or dual sim or a combo of the 3, break the screen from 720p to 1080p or 1440, bigger cell battery for extended life. the combinations! Its like a digital Lego set!
juggawest sd 801 only support 3gb ram max.
Zack from JerryRigEverything is thinking,
How should i tear this phone down, too bad Austin did it already
DAMN YOU **untears your down**
I actually like the idea. What it would take me to buy one:
-I'd like to have multible parts to chose from (e.g. a 1080p display and a 4k display or a basic camera vs. a high end camera)
-I'd like the company to release new core modules every now and then, with newer specs
-I'd like the phone to be as thin as possible while still having all it's properties
-a price that doesn't make me feel bad, although i understand why it costs that much
It looks like an LCD panel too.
As they make more parts, you might be able to, say, swap the 8MP main camera for a 50MP one, or a 120Hz OLED display, or a larger battery.
lets build smarthpone with core i7 gtx 1080ti ram 32gb
*Austin Evans Vs Unbox Therapy : 10 Years Later*
they (smartphone company) actually can build 'smartphone module' like pc desktop ,,, but they dont ,,, why ? i think you know the answer bro

Hey guys, this is exhAUSTINg.
In 2019 you need to care for the future. ;)
like my first nokia that i personalized 20 times in a day haha
I think that the most important thing about this phone is that it does not use minerals extracted from conflict zones and nobody has been exploited during his building. For that is expensive. The profit for sale is 9 €. Anyway thank you for show us the modular part!
The Fairphone is built in China, same place as most phones. _'Fair'_ is a loose term.
They thoroughly check their supply chain.
Rip Project Ara
He said $100 is not expensive, dude $100 is a Nepalese's monthly salary ..
Usama Khan nigga got ripped off pizza where I live cost like $6 for a whole as pizza 😂
I would probably buy this if it were available in the US on the Verizon network. I do think having great support and lots of upgrade options would make this a truly killer phone. Adding in water resistance would be a great bonus as well!
Modular smartphones should be the future. Similar to Computers
Wait can the ram or CPU be upgraded
Telepathic Diancie 007 no
Yes.
nope
You can upgrade the entire SOC (ram+CPU+GPU)
Maybe?
I use the fairphone 2. And I had the Fairphone 1 before that (I broke that one). And It does everything I need it to do, even if it hasn't got the most amazing specs you'll see. I do think, that it is a bit on the expensive side though :( Anyway, feel free to ask me questions if you want to know anything about it!
But of course, a big bit of what you are paying is because a large ammount of the materials are sourced from conflict free mines and they have a big emphacies on fair payments for the workers
how about the OS version? is it stuck with one generation or you they update regularly for example at least nougat now?
When I got it, it had Android 5.1, a few moths ago they released a Update to Android 6, so it isn't the newest available version, but there are regular updates for security patches and other fixes
why/how did the fairphone 1 break? that's kind of counter productive of what it is meant to right?
Long story short, I was out of power and thought why not put the battery of my digicam into the back of the phone... I realised to late that it was 7.4 instead of 3.7 Volts, so that's compleatly my fault... No Smartphone is protected against such overvoltage
Phonebloks anyone?
Yes!
I love his Tokidoki Hatsune Miku shirt! As for this phone, I don't see a place in the market for a phone like this. Phones are cheap enough these days, if you need to swap something out, usually you'll want to just buy a new one for all the other upgrades anyway.
Years 200x: building computers. Year 2017: building phones.

actually yes lol
@TheCook_Cola :c
You have missed a big point which is not only been modular, but also respectful with the environment and that supports certain conflict regions in africa
It's literally better than my old iPhone 6. That's all I need to decide on this phone. It's powerful and it attracts me.

As much as I like the idea of building my own phone. I fear having my drop to the ground and falling to pieces like lego.
This phone is a GREAT project!
The cameras GREAT! It's not bad at all
SICK CAMERA ANGLES AUSTIN
here, take my like.
I'm sure that both people who buy this will be very happy with it.
