- The spiral with Ho Scale with 243 cars 9 engines. The 15"radius at the top of the spiral was tough to overcome.
All radius curves from Bachman ez track to make this work.
15" 18" 22" 26" 28" 33 1/4" 35 1/2"
All 9 engines that are used are old fictitious EMD Union Pacific Gp 18's. Sold under the Bachmann name! Still has the little triangle on the bottom of the diesel tank. I would bet these are an upgraded version of the AHM. The AHM version only had two pick ups on each side of each truck. These have all four. Eight wheels of pickup. Plastic gears, Plastic trucks, Plastic frame, But Aluminum WHEELSETS... The Aluminum tarnishes over time and gives it a dull yellow cover. That is fine with me.
These engines are well over 30 years old.. And cheap. Very cheap.
To this day. Still have no problem with any of them. Just keep the wheels clean. And the gears lubed.
Wow, I am starting to get dizzy watching this! It takes some good track work to prevent derailments in this type of arrangement!
With a little variety in the car types I could watch this all day. :)
Wow! Really great! I'd love to see this in a store's windows display round Christmas time.
Some people are just nuts and this is my kind of nuts! Love it, thanks for sharing.
Give this man a cookie for the best model railroading creativity ever
There is something very hypnotic and satisfying about this. Thank you for sharing; this is awesome!
Pretty cool. I don't know how anyone watching could really count how many cars there are, as if it really matters. That was a lot of work. Thanks for sharing.
Nice work :-)
Looks like a giant tape reel
A very original layout, and everything perfectly controlled, no derailments. Congratulations from Madrid, spain
Great!.
27 cars per engine would be nothing special, nothing extraordinary.
But the Genius part is joining them in one train, and building the spiral track to show them running together. Excellent work!
Mr Risner, thank you very much for creating this layout and taking the time to post the video. My autistic nephew was utterly spellbound while watching it. I'm not quite sure how I stumbled on to it, but I am awfully glad that I did. Thanks again for making a little boy smile :)
jan h.....i also stumbled on it . what we need is little extra, close up of items , labels, engines, is this max speed . the secret of staying on track
Okay!, you had your fun. Now put 'em back in the boxes and get them back on the shelves before your boss gets back!
Man you get stuff pros doing huge detailed club layouts like n-track and Amherst belt lines (big model railroad club in Massachusetts) and then there's this, nice job dude.
Love it. "Put them back in the box and now can we watch TV darling?"
Awesomely hipnotic!
The thing I like most, is viewing the differential speeds for each circle as the cars go around.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing. Every once in a while life permits us to do and/or enjoy things like this. It would certainly make an interesting exhibit at a train show.
I just can't believe this is possible without a derailment, Way to live the dream!
Some of the different ways of enjoying your trains for visual effects. This is new for me. Cool!
Nice to see all the locos working together. Very cool video.
141 or 241, it's a totally mezmerizing tail-chaser with no derailments. Fantastic.
I have a feeling like a trip on a marygoround! Thank you. Now I can believe that the long american takes work really with some helpers in it. A fine demonstration about the quality of the Bachmann products! Have fun with your "Tehachape-Loop"!
This could not be done without a very tolerant and understanding wife.
A 'revolutionary' way to fill a winter afternoon - cool!
yes indeed
Love it! This is awesome! How could someone dislike this?
There are folks out there in RUclips land that intentionally dislike everything they view, good or not. It is a game with them. How pathetic is their life.... Sad really...
Agree. They do it to my videos also (sometimes)
It's when they try to click 'thumbsup', but they missed :/
Thank you!
It is like train art. Nice!
This solves the problem of safe working distance between trains = one very long train! - Then let the folk walk from one end to the other to alight at their destination - a vast escalator on rails.
mesmerizing !…
Thaïs for posting.
OK, I'm hypnotized....Now what? Oh yes...! I....loved.....your....video....! Amazing, I've never seen anything like it before. Thank you!
Mind boggling! Very well done! Thanks for sharing.
Now this would be fun to see using a mini security camera on the front loco.
10 Points for the cameraman and an oscar as best 2nd role for the dog.
Is there ever a point in time where all 9 engines line up in the spiral? That would be cool to witness!
LOL! That was awesome! Happy railroading!
The only thing that would have made it cooler if cats were riding on the cars. lol Loved the video!
That's so awesome . Great job, I tell ya my dog would of heard a noise and it would of been destruction of 243 cars and 9 engines all on there side lol
That's Art man,You get dizzy only from looking at it.Again very cool and i guess it took a lot of work just to place the cars.
Someone had a lot of free time (and curved track and hoppers) on their hands! Pretty cool though, thanks for sharing. :)
James that is amazing work. Your are inspiring!
Day One: Your wife doesn't come home
Day Two: You find the letter telling you that she is leaving you...
Day Three: You make a spiral HO layout with 243 cars and 9 loco's running around the living room with you chanting FREEDOM!...
lmao
That is likely the case. The Mrs., presumably -- or at least her wedding-ringed-hand, is visible sitting there calmly considering her options at 3:15.
Roafl
Imagine this in real life. A train station where the train is always there for you. Need to go place? Just hop on until you have reached your destination :D
That is really something. Very neat to watch
Guess setting out a bad order is out of the question.........well done sir
Perfect addition for under the Christmas tree.
I love the way he has a firm hand on the dog . . . .
The car symmetry when he brings the camera to the ground is intoxicating.
I like the illusion that the inner cars are travelling faster
That's awesome. It IS hard to look away!
Amazingly cool. Can't wait to share with friends.
That is wicked cool looking, well done
I notice the person on the couch hanging onto the dog, just in case lol
Interesting that all the engines are UP, but most of the rolling stock is NS. Great job getting that running so smoothly.
i'm actually impressed, i would have thought something would have stringlined at some point especially having the helpers dotted in throughout.
I'm retired, but it reminds me of my 66 mile drive to work.
wow...now that is bizarre...very neat.
Amazing ! Excellent !!
This is freaking amazing.
James you're the man I applaud this video!
WOW . . . The free time you must have. I hope all cars have different #'s. Cool.
Not much free time I am always busy to much on my mind at once so little time to do it!!!
James you should contact Bachmann, they might want to link this clip to their website to show just what EZ Track can do.
Absolutely amazing!!!
This nearly has a hypnotic effect on the viewer.
That's some crazy shit. Nice job.
Hypnotic and fun. Shame you'll have to move it.
the best part of the video is when the train passes by.
Thank you
That's too cool! The only thing that could top that is to make the spiral cone shape.
Reminds me of an "ant spiral" where the ants roam around in circles for hours at a time.
Excellent, its interesting to see the speed difference between each circle......
+paul paul same speed, it's just a visual illusion.
Yes.. I suppose that's what I meant....
You must of got a pretty good deal on NS bethgon hoppers.
tarmac2001 yes in 1998
+James Risner Oh, hey...an answer to my own question. :D
+James Risner Off topic: Do you use the old "Hook and Horn" connectors or Kadee?
It seems that everyone likes Kadee, but every used car I buy has H&H, like it's the standard.
(I'm a three month newbie.)
+mahnarch seeing this type of layout, most likely H&H. since it comes with each car, and kadee's are like a few bucks a car depending qty your buying.
i dig it. if no one has ever done a large scale art installation with this idea, i would contribute to a crowdfund if james risner wanted to go for it!
Thanks
Love the description. this guy is awesome
Dude... The levels of freetime... Wow
Someone had alot of time on their hands!!!...lol...Really cool, reminds me of a 1930's rendition of the future...
It does take a lot of my time!
I have to admit it...I'm impressed.
This is what you call having too much time on your hands... and yet I sat here and watched the whole video knowing I already knew what the ending was going to be like.. hmmm. :-)
I'm hypnotized. Cars bad....cars bad....say no to cars, and roads. Trains good.....trains good.....say yes to EMD, and GE.
Awesomeness!!! Now I wanna see them go the other way. Lol
it can happen
Reminds of me an 8-track cassette. Remember those?
Great job !! Thanks for sharing. ..
It's like one of those optical illusions!!!
Not only didn't do it, would have never even thought of it! :-)
Bizarre but fascinating! A case of “tangentiaferrophobia” (the fear of straight tracks) LOL!
A Ride On the O Scale Ironbound RR
That. Is. So. Freaking. AWESOME!!!!!!!
Made me smile, well done
This is a great experiment in mathematics and all the subfields.
It's pretty trippy watching the different radial speeds even though it's one continuous train moving at the same linear speed. I'm going to go try getting undizzy now.... :-)
The perfect definition of madness
holy shit, how does that even work without the cars getting derailed? epic!
Time and patience
Flanges on the wheels stop them coming off the line!
Virginity level: Over 9000
AWESOME!!!!! Keep up the good work.
and i cant even get a figure 8 to work without the cars pulling over onto their sides!
Sheldon's Cooper is hospitalized for happinness overload
Just wait, someone is going to put this in a "Most satisfying video compilation". I'm tellin' you, it's going to happen.
Distributed power at its finest.
EXCELLENT ! What a great ides. I don't understand the concern about the amount of track, one would have that and more in a regular layout most likely. Loaded would be cool though, or a looooooooooong circus train. Good work, man, keep it up.
My best friend from high school is working on a large realistic HO scale train with his dad. He put in a hooker on a street corner and guy who just wrecked his car staggering on a sidewalk. His dad like it and left them in.
Unnatural combo Man ...
COOL Idea and looks magic !
Thank you
Great video.
Add more cars so that that the front engine is also pushing the end of its train!
