Glad to see some confident positive passion for this movie. I'm right there with ya! Not perfect but so much to be excited about. I also get the sense that both Sean and Chris probably like this even more than they're letting on, but well aware of the polarizing nature of the fan base, internet culture reaction etc, and are surgically tip-toeing through this discussion to avoid going insane, lol
@@jaredfaidley8391I’m going to be honest. I found his performance so touching I was really moved. I never felt like that for the other synthetics. The only other time I remember feeling this kind of empathy for that type of character was the child robot in AI. He conveyed so much with just a slight furrowed brow and I got invested in he and Rain’s journey. When he got the upgrade and became a more “adult version”, I wasn’t expecting that and loved his new demeanor. Not only did the movie look stunning, but I cared more for these characters than most of the characters in most of the sequels past Alien 3. Loved it and probably going to watch it again on the big screen.
regarding the Romulus myth and how it connects to the movie, i think the Weyland-Yutani corporation sees itself as Romulus. The Engineers (more specifically their creations, the Xenomorphs) are the wolf in the story and W-Y is extracting the life-fluid (suckling at the teat) in the belief that it will nourish them and allow them to realize their vision of a new Roman empire in space.
I think if they had gone the "Alien 3" Bishop route with the Rook character it would have been more effective. Have his undamaged face on an ID badge but have the real face be mangled like Bishops. Two birds with one stone.
Madden had a panic attack on a flight in 1979 and never flew again. Said it's more claustrophobia than anything like turbulence. It's why he never called the Pro Bowl... can't get to Hawaii on a bus.
I have no idea why they chose to bring in Ash when the universe is already establishing that there is an Andy in addition to a Bishop, a David and a Walter etc etc. Just pick somebody real and make it an Android
the girl who gets the face hugger attached to her had just shown the x ray flash light thing on her arm. 26:04 right there with you. Built all that up, I was in it, sold, and then Rook is introduced? Do these filmmakers convince themselves that these effects looks good? Maybe at that point it’s too far and they can’t go back bc that would mean they’d have to design a practical effect and then do reshoots, but c’mon. That was the first domino that fell. Spoilers on this comment: I overall really loved it it had more than enough cool original ideas to set it apart. BUT, I hated the way CGI Ash looked, but more that line. It was too blatant, and more importantly Ripley said it to an Alien Queen, which one could argue have a gender. The alien drones don't really have a gender, as their procreation process is so, in fact alien to ours. "When Rain just screams 'Eff you!'" at the end I thought that was much more cathartic. I also loved the line, "What, leave someone behind?"
28:36 Yes, it’s Ripley’s line, but it also feels very out of character for Andy. Like, maybe he’s pumped up on Andrenaline, being protective, experiencing an echo from his recent re programming, and he’s sort of raging out, but still…it doesn’t work for his character. At least as someone who first experienced it the first time around. Maybe for those who haven’t seen Aliens it works.
The Ian holm reaction was great at first but it was also a perfect time to take a bathroom break. There was a shot where the CGI for him was perfect but the rest was really uncanny. My girlfriend who has never seen an Alien movie and went in blind really got into it once the facehuggers show up. Was locked in for the rest of the movie
I disagree with the assessments of Gorman and Hudson as weak men. They are scared, like anyone would be in that situation, and they rise to the occasion. Hudson especially acquitted himself well at Hadley’s Hope. Despite his early complaining, he: - is the first to (correctly) hypothesize the nature of the alien queen - uses his specialized technical skill to assist the mission throughout the film - heroically rescues Newt in the medical bay - goes down fighting in the ops room Hudson is a hero. People are so afraid to break the mold and not auto lock Alien/Aliens in the top two spots. Honestly, they both hold up well given the time that has passed, but also do not. You show someone 20 years old Romulus or Alien right now, and I think near unanimously they would react more positively to Romulus. Sooner or later, that has to count for something. It doesn’t spoil the legacy of those other films to acknowledge that.
I’ve rewatched them all and I think Aliens is overrated honestly. I still think Alien holds up better than its sequel and I like Prometheus. Romulus is my number 3

I completely agree with the sentiment expressed here. Aliens is my favorite movie. I was born in '83 and my brother showed it to me when I was like 8. I still get anxiety at the sound of the motion trackers. I thought this was an excellent horror movie and a pretty good Alien movie. It was a bit too far up its own ass with the references. Very pleasantly susprised to see I share the same top 4 as you guys. Posted my franchise ranking video last night and there are a LOT of people up in arms over it lol
Why was he named Rook and not Ash? Feel like I missed something. Also, I might be on an island here, but I thought this movie was badass. Probably top 3 in the franchise for me.
I've always felt that people are too attached to Aliens because it was such a cable classic. I'm not saying it's not great but as far as ranking it's closer to Alien: Romulus. A ranking that also may help people understand this franchise would go like this. 1. Alien the original establishes this wonderful sandbox and sets the tone that this is high-bro sci-fi (AI, Corporate agendas, lived-in world where this type of space activity is routine) with low-brow entertainment (people trapped with a monster). I'd say the perfect balance of both. 2. Prometheus 3. Alien: Covenant I view these as a piece with Ridley building out the world with his brand of intellectual/philosophical underpinnings. These films are also communicating with his other works specifically Blade Runner. At the same time, you get the enjoyment of seeing "competent" scientists get wrecked out of hubris. Deeply misunderstood upon release but the more I've watched them the higher my esteem grows. it is remarkable how much Ridley is showing us his freak but the people were not ready to match it. 4. Aliens 5. Alien:Romulus Rip-roaring action films that are carving out their niche within the world. Both are executed at a high technical level and add their own flair but do not engage as deeply with the headier concepts of those above. 6. Alien 3 7. Alien: Resurrection Failed experiments with interesting directors. Enough there to watch and enjoy aspects of but too flawed to consider with the other five.
I can’t stop thinking about this movie. It’s my cozy movie of 2024. Im sprinting to the theater tomorrow to see it again on the biggest screen possible.
Arkasha Stevenson would absolutely be an incredible choice for another future Alien movie. The First Omen was a huge surprise & effectively brought some well balanced ideas and nuance to the usually tired and bland "religious horror" sub-genre. Not to mention a studio franchise whatever-quel which could've been another stylishly dead & ultimately empty cash grab. I'm in on whatever she's doing next.
her leaving the girl to go back for the android is where this movie goes screeching off the rails. manually climbing down the elevator?? why not just take her to the top then ride back down. why are you even carrying the black goo after the android has been switched back to good? we got the airlock vaccum scene already with the acid boiling through the hull of the ship. the final battle of hybrid engineer/alien baby was ridiculous, they were determined to get the final girl into a spacesuit and have the alien sucked out.
There are 3-4 moments that require some buy-in from viewers to make any logical sense. Also it’s just a bunch of mid 20s orphan miners, I can be sold the idea that they’d just make bad decisions. Only one I didn’t get (SPOILER): when the human mutant alien baby drops into the cargo area, why didn’t she just drop it like she did in the end right then? It even seemed she was aware it was an option
You guys could've continued discussing the alien franchise for another 30 minutes. Great stuff. I think Romulus is #4 for me in the rankings. I enjoyed it more than Covenant.
Man, I was really underwhelmed by Romulus. Felt so rehash-y, bad cgi to bring back dead actors is icky, and none of the characters are remotely as interesting as Fassbender's David or Weaver's Ripley! The whole movie was just kind there. And too damn dark!!
Probably something to do with Romulus murdering Remus to become the first king of Rome., and in the dumb Prometheus lore, humanity and the xenomorphs can be understood as sibling offspring from the black goo
13:04 I love this pod to death, but man oh man can we get an english lesson for our guys here. Insert gif of Willem Dafoe SYMBOLISM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also anyone else notice use of the made up work intentionality? Can we not just say intent(ion)(s))
Oh man, I cannot be paid enough to rewatch Prometheus and Convenant... while they have great gore scenes and fantastic visuals, they both suck in my opinion. I definitely LOVE Alien 3, right behind Aliens.
After 2nd viewing, but before 3rd viewing 🤣 : Nostalgia 100%, mood and environment 100%, facehugger action 100%, xenomorph action 80%, Prometheus black goo and hybrid alien 5% 😢 not needed... 80% of this movie was freaking fantastic and I was smiling ear to ear, until black goo and stupid engineer looking hybrid monster... Similar to the one we got at the end of alien Resurrection,... All in all a great movie though and I can't wait to see it for a 3rd time 🍿🫶👽 Aliens 1986 Alien 1979 Alien 3 Alien Romulus AVP part 1 Prometheus (Alien covenant, AVP part 2, and alien Resurrection.. Ummmm....👎LOL)
How about a CGI of David aka Fassbender? That wouldn't work either. Ash in this movie is like an evil throwback to Obi Wan at the end of Return of the Jedi. Not necessarily a flattering comp. Hopefully they paid Ian Holmes' estate for the rights, and the compensation was appropriate.
I feel like Ridley Scott had more influence over the third act of Romulus. That held the film back from being an A to A+. For me it’s B to B+. Which in my opinion is better than the last four Alien films, excluding the AvP movies. From what I’ve heard about the Madden movie, it’s about EA coming to Madden about the development of the video game. It could be set in the late 80’s and 90’s. Maybe flashbacks to his coaching career.
how stupid illogical and emotional every character acts was beyond annoying. WHY DIDNT YOU OPEN THE DOOR?!?!?! cause if i had we would all be dead....he had just proven he knows exactly how far away something can be to close the door perfectly.
Romulus is a damn good movie but feels a lot-like many sequels-remix greatly hits of the greater ones Thats where all the Alien films are individually fantastic as their own thing. Romulus is relying a lot of its predecessors until the last 15-20 mins where it felt like the movie said F it, lets get nuts
Funny cuz for me, the last 15-20 min was the part that reminded me the most of the predecessors. Just not Alien/Aliens, so maybe the creators thought they’d get away with it
At the moment I'm just way more negative on Romulus than these guys, I still had a fun time at the movies but this was too insulting to the audience. Absolutely a "Force Awakens" vibe. The Romulus ship is actually quite boring and empty. I was happy with about 50% of this and it should have been great if it pushed forward instead of looking back.
Nah, it's just the Jurassic World of the Alien franchise, a 'member berry fest of previous better Alien films and the bad ones too all making folks feel good while watching but then 24 hours later it is a very pretty looking but missed opportunity disappointment, which we already got with Ridley's two Prequels.
@@rigsby1454 Have you seen it? If the answer is yes, then you shouldn't have a problem. If the answer is no, then go see it and rewatch the movies after Aliens
This is just a well made Alien movie with superfun sequences and with a bold ending, the fan service was the worst part but to me it's way better than covenant
Bold is a bold word. The ending was the same as Resurrection with elements of Prometheus. I didn’t find it that shocking because I’d seen it all before
Garbage is extreme. It’s not that bad. It’s entertaining for what it is. Just not the 10/10 that you’re seeing in some social media reviews. I’d give it 5 or 6 out of 10
Alien 3 is way better than this new trash. Alien 3 is the 3rd best alien movie. Alien 3 is probably finchers 3rd best movie. Better than any Netflix trash, better than the awful movies the game and panic room. More enjoyable and rewatchable than seven, fight club, and Zodiac. The only clear cut better movies are gone girl and social network. Alien 3 is underrated. Up there with the lost world as under rated disrespected sequels
@@dylan3377 I don't think so. Most people I don't think have seen zodiac. I own it, I think I've watched it twice... I guess I don't understand why it's considered good. I think people have been told it's good and so they go along with the flow and agree it's good. But if you gave somebody these two movies who has never seen either one I think they like alien 3 more. Has a beginning, middle, and conclusion. With good performance by rock (the black dude with glasses who was on the 90s fox tv show, rock lol), I personally think they did a good job with the relationship between the doctor and Ripley, the story is pretty sci Fi and original with a woman being trapped in a male prison with no weapons. Just an awesome fucking movie. Kinda like people think of dark city to the matrix. But I've never seen dark city so I wouldn't know. If all movies were as good as alien 3 we'd have a lot of good movies.
I'll watch/listen to just about any Big Picture episode that doesn't have Amanda on it. I find her so insufferable, I cannot stand listening to The Big Picture podcast anymore. Which, in turn, adds to my disdain towards her because I know how good of a podcast it could be if she weren't on it... I believe Sean knows this to be true but is somehow stuck with her.
Nic Cage as Madden?! Nah! Al Davis like the commenter below said! Maybe Matt McCoughnney circa 2010 for Kenny Stabler, I have know idea who could play John Madden?! He was such a larger than life character and a big dude!
Alien Romulus was solid. Not amazing nor awful, just solid. Entertaining 'member berry movie. I really think this movie is the Alien version of the Jurassic World release summer 2015, EVERYBODY LOVED it when watching it, all it's fan service, repeat beats, then when seeing it again it's flaws stick out even more...and more, until it kind of sucks and becomes more of a missed opportunity. Also I LOATHE the J-World movies, ALL OF THEM. It looked great, sound design was great, most of the cast was forgettable except for Andy & Rain (Cailee Spaeny of Pacific Rim 2, Devs, Priscilla, Civil War)...Romulus movie was just wayyy too 'member berry for me, and not nearly as gory as I thought it would be from Fede (The First Omen & Immaculate & Prometheus still had superior birth/creature scenes)... Recreating previous Alien film shots, scenes & dialogue/moments and situations from the best Alien films (and even the not so good Alien films) was a weird choice...this is the style of many meh Legacy prequel/sequel entries from the past 15 years that does not really do it's own thing, but plays out familiar beats of a well known IP (Evil Dead 2013, Robocop 2014 etc) instead of something like 2022's really good "Prey" which did it's own thing in the Predator-verse. Some still do it very well, Miller & Denis did this with the VERY NICHE MM: Fury Road & Blade Runner 2049 films (and I loved Miller's Furiosa: MM Saga even though nobody supported it at the cinemas this summer). I was hoping this would be as good as 2022's "Prey" in regards to a new entry of a franchise well worn, but it falls short of that by to many ON THE NOSE Alien & Aliens callbacks and Ridley/Lindelof "black goo script magic" for bad scripts returning into Fede's film. Great trailer, but sorry Fede, the actual film didn't live up to the hype I had for the 7th Alien entry (I'm not including the AvP movies).

Rip-roaring action films that are carving out their niche within the world. Both are executed at a high technical level and add their own flair but do not engage as deeply with the headier concepts of those above.
6. Alien 3
7. Alien: Resurrection
Failed experiments with interesting directors. Enough there to watch and enjoy aspects of but too flawed to consider with the other five.
That fuckin motorized chair would stink so bad! 😂

Really loved the Fede interview in this. Thank you Fede
If the engineers aren’t in the movie then I’m not seeing it
Romulus is the bomb-ulus. So are my internet podcast husbands.
@@brentulstad3275 Yes indeed, The First Omen was refreshingly awesome. Arkasha gang
I liked the movie when the movie wasn't reminding me of better movies
her leaving the girl to go back for the android is where this movie goes screeching off the rails. manually climbing down the elevator?? why not just take her to the top then ride back down. why are you even carrying the black goo after the android has been switched back to good? we got the airlock vaccum scene already with the acid boiling through the hull of the ship. the final battle of hybrid engineer/alien baby was ridiculous, they were determined to get the final girl into a spacesuit and have the alien sucked out.
CR pushing Scorch Trials supremacy >>
Aliens is the best
Alien is the best
@@Gypsywastelandno
Probably something to do with Romulus murdering Remus to become the first king of Rome., and in the dumb Prometheus lore, humanity and the xenomorphs can be understood as sibling offspring from the black goo
This movie is a blast. Effects reminded me of the movie gravity! This is the best horror thriller of the year no doubt!
The Madden movie is about the creation of the video game Madden will probably be in it last than 15 mins
Alien 3 is better than Prometheus. Prometheus is more flawed than 3, and that's saying something
13:04 I love this pod to death, but man oh man can we get an english lesson for our guys here. Insert gif of Willem Dafoe SYMBOLISM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also anyone else notice use of the made up work intentionality? Can we not just say intent(ion)(s))
symbology?
Oh man, I cannot be paid enough to rewatch Prometheus and Convenant... while they have great gore scenes and fantastic visuals, they both suck in my opinion. I definitely LOVE Alien 3, right behind Aliens.
After 2nd viewing, but before 3rd viewing 🤣 :
Nostalgia 100%, mood and environment 100%, facehugger action 100%, xenomorph action 80%, Prometheus black goo and hybrid alien 5% 😢 not needed... 80% of this movie was freaking fantastic and I was smiling ear to ear, until black goo and stupid engineer looking hybrid monster... Similar to the one we got at the end of alien Resurrection,... All in all a great movie though and I can't wait to see it for a 3rd time 🍿🫶👽
Aliens 1986
Alien 1979
Alien 3
Alien Romulus
AVP part 1
Prometheus
(Alien covenant, AVP part 2, and alien Resurrection..
Gulliermo del Toro
how stupid illogical and emotional every character acts was beyond annoying. WHY DIDNT YOU OPEN THE DOOR?!?!?! cause if i had we would all be dead....he had just proven he knows exactly how far away something can be to close the door perfectly.
AVP is awesome. Better story and great visuals on a budget
No Amanda Dobbins! Good podcast

People are allowed to not like her if that’s their choice.
Amanda is the best
Romulus is a damn good movie but feels a lot-like many sequels-remix greatly hits of the greater ones
Thats where all the Alien films are individually fantastic as their own thing. Romulus is relying a lot of its predecessors until the last 15-20 mins where it felt like the movie said F it, lets get nuts
Funny cuz for me, the last 15-20 min was the part that reminded me the most of the predecessors. Just not Alien/Aliens, so maybe the creators thought they’d get away with it
I couldn't like Prometheus no matter what, after being lied to by Scott about what the god damn movie was.
Romulus is easily the 3rd best Alien movie.
I respect the take but not sure I’m ready to agree.
F v c k No
Bottom 3 for me. Yeesh.
Completely riskless baby filmmaking. Alien is a franchise with balls, this is completely producer dictated.
Nicholas Cage is the worst casting choice for the most beloved sportscaster in history. Worst choice I can think of. 😢
Aliens, Alien, Romulus, Prometheus, Aliens 3, Covenant, Resurrection....that's my order and I'm sticking to it.
Covenant is better than Prometheus
I can respect that.
@seanbs No. Covenant is full of the dumbest characters ever put into an Alien film that doesn't also involve the Predator.
LOL this shit third? fucking hell
@@rigsby1454 Have you seen it? If the answer is yes, then you shouldn't have a problem. If the answer is no, then go see it and rewatch the movies after Aliens
Everything that Ridley re-touched is total BS imho. He was long gone, but his huge ego never sleeps.
Needed subtitles for the cockney actors
They might as well have been speaking Latin! Jeez it was rough.
LMAO Alien 3 Special Edition is LEAGUES better than weak ass Prometheus
You guys never finished your Alien ranking! 🙄🙄🙄🙄
This is just a well made Alien movie with superfun sequences and with a bold ending, the fan service was the worst part but to me it's way better than covenant
Bold is a bold word. The ending was the same as Resurrection with elements of Prometheus. I didn’t find it that shocking because I’d seen it all before
Memberberry force awakens ass movie
Prometheus not tier 1 is unforgivable
Nah, all the pretty visuals and aped Ancient Alien/Chariots of The Gods Lindelof script doctoring make Prometheus booty ass crap!
Saw it last night. It's garbage.
Couldn't agree more.....I fastforwarded most of it. It was that bad.
@@delegance1086yeah I fastforwarded too…. luckily my theater granted me the master remote control. It was awesome
Garbage is extreme. It’s not that bad. It’s entertaining for what it is. Just not the 10/10 that you’re seeing in some social media reviews. I’d give it 5 or 6 out of 10

This comment section is the reason I hate the online film discourse space. Just a bunch of cynical, hyperbolic tskes.
Alien 3 over Zodiac would take a billion dollar PR campaign to convince most people
@@dylan3377 I don't think so.
I don't like Zodiac either, but Alien 3 is just too much of a mess, despite having a ton of interesting stuff.
Alien 3 is an absolute masterpiece and I remember even thinking that in 1992 at theatres .
Thought the casting was awful....low budget.....not very well done. Extremely lackluster
It was 80m budget we must of saw a different movie the two leads were fantastic especially Cailee will agree the rest of the cast was meh though
