@@ExtractionsAndIre Damn. That's west-coast emo lyrics, right there. Good luck with the bird whispering, if anyone can do it, an Aussie could. With the assistance of some fumes.
It doesn't happen often that I laugh out loud to a science video but this one made me giggle multiple times. "Pre-tarred" and the "66% bird yield"... just amazing accidental comedy. Good luck with the next couple steps, there were many suggestions for the UV step on the first video (one wild suggestion by myself) so I hope it goes better this time.
It probably is the same bird. Small songbirds typically only take a few weeks at most from hatching to fledging, and if food is abundant they will immediately lay a second clutch of eggs (and often a third --> fifth or more if things are going well). I'm not knowledgeable on Australian birds in particular, but that looks and sounds like a grey shrike thrush, and that brooding pattern fits them as well.
I would definitely say a yield improvement could come from not concentrating your mixture in the Dean Stark before neutralisation. Concentrating a ketal in an acidic mixture at heat is most likely the killer. In future I would do the neutralisation and workup and then remove your toluene. More annoying but hopefully would help! Love the birbs
I wonder if the yield could be improved further in this step by pulling a vacuum here to reduce the bp of the toluene. Maybe a vacuum dean-stark too? All this would probably be... interesting without a cold trap tho
I can't believe how entertaining all of these videos have been since I started watching. The first video I saw was the fractional distillation of gasoline. Loved the fulminate and azide stuff, the maccas made fuego (feat.Grimmace). I think your entire catalogue has been pretty entertaining and interesting.
Found a study on ResearchGate called "Do Insectivorous Birds use Volatile Organic Compounds from Plants as Olfactory Foraging Cues?" that suggest birbs might be attracted to essential oils. Pretty sure Benzene is an essential oil... though its presence might have something to do with the 67% birb yield...

Not 100% sure, but it might be a Grey Shrikethrush. Those guys will come back and nest up to three times a year, and will likely come back next year. You have friends for life now. I'm sure the fumes will only make their bloodline stronger.
Love the video! This is easily my favorite series on this channel. I have a few notes that might improve your yields (I say this as a former fragrance process chemist who exclusively purified things via vacuum distillation for years). 1. For the ketonic decarboxylation step, I would pretreat the sand. (Simply wash with 0.1 M HCl (x1), tap water (until the water is no longer strongly acidic), and last with distilled water. Then let the sand dry overnight) The sand likely has come metal impurities that could carry through to the ketalization step (and contributing the all the tar). 2. For the ketalization step, insulating the Dean-Stark apparatus can help shorten the reaction time (especially if the material can degrade with prolonged exposure to acid). You can also neutralize the crude reaction mixture with saturated K carb instead of bicarb since you will use less volume. This should be done prior to the removal of the volatiles (since I am going to guess that the product is not very stable around hot acid once the ethylene glycol is no longer present). 3. When setting up your vacuum distillation, you should run a "dry pull" of the system to ensure there are no leaks in the vacuum. In my experience, leaks in a distillation setup are the main reason for diminished yields. Also since you are only using ice water for your trap, you should probably do 2 traps to help preserve the shelf life of your pump (I may or may not speak from experience). I look forward to your next upload! :)

Wow, your different sized 1L flasks brought back memories from high school. There are different ways of defining the volume of un-demarcated lab equipment and two of of those systems were used by the authorized suppliers for my high school lab. Haha yeah? how is it gangsta?
Isn’t that the impaling bird? 😅
REMEMBER CUBANE, IT‘S BACK🎉
In substituted form
I mean - it's no bemzene, but it's good that it's back
Cubene.
Magnificent off-white chemistry
32:54 😂🤣 That joke was everything, thank you
21:56 I FEEL ACKNOWLEDGED! Love your stuff. Half of the time i have a little idea on what is happening... The other half - not a clue. But hey! I like you! You teach and entertain. Keep up the good work
5:08 is that uranium nitrate????
Yeah I noticed it too
Why even try it in the paper?
Would do a great video
I remember learning about ketal protecting groups in ochem it’s great to see that knowledge put into actual practice in a non rigorous setting
"T" is for technical grade bits that does stuff together
"A" is for Aussies and me
"R" is for reagents that come from the Bunnings
Down here with the chemistry.
Gotta say, seeing the birds nest has been really fun! I always watch the robins that nest in my garden every year. For me, that's my project space. Thanks for sharing yours with us!
I can't wait to see what type of tar he's going to make this time! 😄
"That is the biggest 1 L flask I've ever seen" could already be the quote of 2025
a lot of birds lay one brood and then another right after to increase the chances of at least some of the babies making it to adulthood. Very rarely will a bird use another birds nest.
I feel as though you saying "Yeh, yep, come through, persist despite the horrors!" With such positivity at 25:03 could be the sole thing that keeps me alive in the coming year! Thanks for the motivation :D
Edit: also felt I should acknowledge what an absolute banger of a soundtrack you chose for this video! It matches the shed vibe so well
As one of the limited chemistry viewers, thanks for making chemistry fun again
21:57 hello, I have no clue about chemistry, I just love watching you do it!
Chemistry and bird sounds goes hard 12:52
I hope that you keep making your great vids for a very long time. Some of the most entertaining and original stuff on this digital magic roundabout even though I only understand a fraction of it. Awesome.
NOOO RUclips WHY DID YOU HIDE THIS FROM ME I NEED TO WATCH CUBANE.
25:03 "You have to persist, despite the horrors". Words to live by... (and Tom creates a new class of views who are here for the _philosophy_ and _wisdom_ !) 😉
I looked it up and the average bird yield is 55.3%. Your yield is actually pretty good (assuming there were 3 eggs)
Remember kids:
When you think you can sing with the birds, it means you should've been using a fume hood.
The bird yield HAHAHA that's so dark fuckin hell
21:57 I took a couple chemistry classes in school. Always found it fascinating. I remember close to nothing. I remember some really basic stuff so I can follow along for like 1% of the time. The rest, im just enjoying cool science stuff. I appreciate the work you do and for sharing it with us.
