Walmart Has Ruined This Suburban St. Louis City
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 авг 2024
- Fenton, Missouri has some deep history, however it was ruined by no other corporation than Walmart. Back in the day, there used to be some ancient burial mounds on the site of where a Walmart Supercenter sits today. Otherwise, Fenton is a nice suburb to call home in the St. Louis area. The schools are top notch, the community is safe and homes are valuable.

I moved to Saint Louis in 1985, and it was a wonderful, safe, and growing city with low crime, and lots of benefits.*
*Today, ALL of Saint Louis is corrupt, unsafe even if you are packing a machine gun and finally, is permanently ruined.*
I did my high school senior project about this walmart! they built it over native american burial mounds and attempted to cover up all of the remains. the site was vandalized heavy and eventually just bulldozed over destroying tons of artifacts and human remains that still remain underneath
How awful to bulldoze a burial ground. Builders of these times have no respect for anything. Walmart - never liked them - even have a cheapo name.
Riverfront times covered that story way back in the day. I don't and will not shop there because of it.
@@jacobsander6595 I remember when they put the Walmart in where the old great stool used to be that's where the first Walmart used to be Was An Old Town
@@jeffcreech7010 Riverfront Times didn't even know that Indian mounds were there I remember riding my motorcycle on that property back in the 60s when it was woods and Fields and nobody even knew it that there was an old burial around here
Average big box store ruining the walkability of cities be like:
I've solved the walk ability issue by employing the use of electric bike.. side baskets..I'm disabled and love the option
@@MBT06 and now the big box stores are being closed by the internet with people shopping online
So you might've missed something about this story. G.J. Grewe is a dude who has done a lot of development in the St. Louis area. G.J. Grewe Commercial Real Estate company is the one who chose to bulldoze the Native American burial grounds, and put a Walmart there. I live right outside of Fenton (Murphy), and I can tell you for a fact the trailer parks are not as bad as you think they are. They are actually nice and a lot of the people that live there are in a trasition into a real place to settle down. Now the people that go to Walmart in Fenton (although there's literally one six minutes down the road) they are the ones that ruin that part of Fenton. Fenton is a very family-friendly place to live, 20 minutes to St. Louis, 20 minutes to Festus. This Fenton Walmart no joke is the reason I will not step foot in any Walmart.
Thanks for the info.
Walmart has ruined America.
Thanks! Longest stripmall in the world is in Chesterfield Valley lots of Mt Dew go get some
Aww how nice of you to give me some Mountain Dew money 🥹
Haha you’re the best, thanks Dana 🙂
I lived in Fenton when I was a kid... The Meramec River tends to flood out a lot of Old Town. There use to be trailer parks up where Gravois Bluffs is and they brought in tons and tons of fill to build up not the Walmart side but the other side of the highway. Where Walmart was, nothing but woods and it would have been nice to develop to a park. Walmart opened in Fenton in 1985 - it used to be on Gravois around the corner in a building that was a Gold's Gym last, but like in many places they wanted to replace a normal sized store with a behemoth Supercenter - a concept that originated not too far from here in Washington, MO origially. There is a very neat historic hotel at 10:08. You are on the edge there of tons of trailer parks for sure, some of them pretty old and ratty and probably full of methheads. I am 45 and the older part of Fenton has changed little since i was a kid. The Gravois Bluffs really have been the only major development there besides lots of housing on the outskirts. I am surprised Fenton has not been proactive to annex those unincorporated areas of St Louis County at least. Northern Jefferson County isn't so bad outside of some of the crummy trailer parks, lots of nice suburban homes and not much crime. Further south you go, worse it gets.
I have a friend out here in Oregon who originally is from Fenton. Dude loves his Steak and Shake.
I can see flooding being an issue there for sure. Interesting back story and info you have on not just Walmart but the area. Thanks for the comment.
Wal mart wouldn’t be there if people didn’t go there, the Chrysler plants were taken down so fast because Fenton wasn’t happy about the closing and decided to tax the plant and everything in them, they were gutted and torn down very quickly by Chrysler.
To me they should beaf-up Old Town Fenton with some new apartments and condos as well as some nice restaurants and fun places for shopping 🛍 to give it a more urban vibe and culture just like Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Maplewood, Richmond Heights, University City, abd Clayton.
Do at least something with it anyway lol
@Chris Harden Right or just get rid of it if you have no interest in it at all.
I'm not sure that most people who live in Fenton want a culture similar to Kirkwood, Webster Groves, etc. Bringing in a high number of rental properties would likely increase the crime rate in the area...by looking at the statistics that the video shared, Fenton seems like a nice, safe, upper-middle class place to live. Why risk losing that?
@@americasevilgenius Well they should atleast clean up Old Town Fenton and add some fun stuff to it.
Old Town Fenton can't really beefed up because it floods nearly every year.
Walmart ruins every city
All big bix retailers do. We don't need monopolies, but that's capitalism for you. It's going to happen eventually.
I deliver truckloads of product to the Lowe’s store. There is a nice view of everything below, from atop the bluff near the loading docks.
That Super Walmart is so going to be haunted.
LOL Chris Methison sad but so true i love these and please keep them coming my hat off to you 🙂
Ive always thought Fenton had potential on Old Gravois. They could build a more pedestrian friendly business zone with apartments and more homes there right next to old town Fenton.
I absolutely love Fenton! Granted, my wife and I are rather reclusive, so we don't really care too much about "walk around" areas and the like, but we do love the convenience of having all the different stores in the area for basically anything and everything you could possibly need. There aren't huge amounts of people, which is great for my little family! Although there aren't "many" mom & pop places, some do still exist. One of which is a bar-type place that serves very good food and has exceptional service! I recommend Fenton Bar and Grill for people in the area looking for a locally owned, family-oriented place with great food and wings!
A Walmart ad popped up at the end.
Lol
Some great scenery. A new buc-ee's competitor spin off at the old Chrysler plant location? A friend of mine from college worked for a brokerage firm and Chesterfield area. And now has his own business.
Burial mounds don't make money, but Wal Marts do. Goes to show that money rules everything around us.
Two car garage???? 1:28 Around here, where we live, it's three or four car garages are the norm.
Best way to ruin a nice downtown, let a Walmart Supercenter in.
On Winter Bluff Dr, there seems to be only 2 house designs/floor plans.
My takeaway: Don't let Walmart in your town or city.
Haha
@@ChrisHarden Were somewhat thinking of moving to Coeur d'Alene Idaho, best thing ----- "No Walmart's allowed."
Again, I loved your video!❤
Awesome to see a place near my hometown appear on your channel! I grew up in High Ridge just across the Meramec in a neighborhood similar to the one you drove through. I would make trips to Fenton with my high school friends since there's nothing to do in JeffCo 😂 I'm off at college now but it's nice to see my old stomping ground
St. Louis is beautiful . Been to Cahokia mounds also amazing and the view from the top of the city is great. I never knew about Fenton mounds. So sad, really is.
Thank you.
It is so surreal seeing footage of my hometown that i grew up and still live in, pointing at everything saying “ive been there!!!!” Giggled to myself the entire time watching this
Great work as always.
Thanks!
Great overview! Thanks..
Thanks for the kind words!
Unfortunately, that meth production belt stretches all the way down 55 and 44. We have a problem in Springfield but Lebanon has it worse. Fenton doesn't seem to have the homeless problem like here. BTW, I caught the first fish of my life in the Meramec in Fenton, or maybe Valley Park.
Old Town Fenton is disappointing, but the problem is because there just isn't much there. Unlike St. Charles or Kimmswick, there are just a handful of old buildings, so anything that would "pop" up would be new construction, which lacks the history, charm and appeal of say, Washington MO, Clarksville or Hannible. But yeah, it could be a heck of a lot better.
I have an old map from the 1800’s for Jefferson county they are hiding all kinds of mounds they are hiding. I live here, and it is disgusting that the mounds are being hidden.
Where are some more of them at ?
C'mon, Fenton, bring in some microbreweries and gentrify the whole area. Masses of hipsters are counting on you!!!
I remember going to 6 Flags in '75 and there were tons of unsold cars at the Mopar plant, the "sales bank". Was a recession.
I currently live in Fenton and have been off and on for years. I had no idea that we had mounds, as well. Also, Old Towne Fenton floods a lot. The last very large flood was in 2015.
It wouldn't make much sense to develop it. We are having heavy storms as I write, and I bet Old Towne is on the verge of flooding. Plus, no one knows the history of the area. At least, this is the first I've heard of it, and I've done some asking around, and haven't heard anyone who has any knowledge of the history.
Will you do a video on fenton and linden in michigan?
Cool
📻🙂
Anything on University City [ St.Louis County]❓❓
It’s very interesting.
Interesting history, …..
And , the Loop.❗️
I lived in Fenton and my son has. Has a very nice home. I never heard of the Fenton Mounds. Thanks.
You forgot to mention the flood zones. The road that you started on which is soccer Park road all those houses to your right are in a flood zone and have flooded so many times I couldn't even tell you. And speaking of flooding the subdivision that you drive down at the end of your video at the very back of that subdivision is also a flood zone.
Which state or town and old grade school that one in
Interesting video i noticed that very few people were parked in the street
Yup. Not much of a reason to go visit.
What did they find in the mounds when the Walmart was being constructed?
There are stories that say that construction crews found human bones but thought that they were tree roots so they used root cutters.
It’s comical people like visiting old towns but then say they need to update it. Which is it? You like the older town feel or a newer town feel?
Good question… not sure. 🤔
@@ChrisHarden I hear you. I prefer the older town feel. To me, it’s disappointing when I see older building and/or nature being cut down and concreted over 😕
St. Louis destroyed many native mounds long before Wal Mart existed. This has been a feature of American manifest destiny not a "one off". We still do this. A mound was destroyed south of Princeton, Illinois recently to build a warehouse. Next to Warnecke Forrest Preserve.
Had you done just a little bit of research, you would have found that in late 2015 and spring 2017, Old Town Fenton experience massive flooding that was up to the second floor on many buildings, hence the lack of investment and why the shopping areas were moved up onto what is now Gravois Bluffs after the flooding of 1993.
Just a bit of math says grewe threw it up just after y2k and 2015 cones 15 years after.
@@hardrays Read! He started developing Gravois Bluffs after the flooding in 1993. Do your own math.
Glad I'm not the only one who calls Jefferson County Metherson County! 😂
Cranklin County
They used to have a nice grocery store in Old Town that I would do when I was a kid
When I grow up I wanna live in Fenton (Fen - tun) for real ! !! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Oh dang. Should’ve said something beforehand. Lol
Who lives in/owns that big house on the hill?

Are we going to talk about ‘cookie cutter designs’? Really. There’s SO MUCH diversity in housing options in a city. They look the same outside and inside
@1:26 I WANT a house with an attached garage. If you don't like you can always go live in Russia. Or Cuba. Or Venezuela...China...
