It wasn’t an explosion. It was an ignition. An explosion would have caused extensive damage to the shop & tool boxes, etc.

@@kezark31 you said EFI carb, like that's a thing. EFI stands for electronic fuel injection. A carburator doesn't have any electronics, except for maybe an electric choke. There are EFI conversion kits but a traditional carburetor doesn't have an electronic fuel control system.

I had a aerosol can of injection cleaner fall and bust the valve off. It flew around like it was possessed, afterwards a haze of the fluid just drifted down on the car, thankfully it didn't find an ignition source or that could have been bad. Speedy recovery to these guys, hang in there.

Had this happen to me once. I happened to be wearing something that was rated for not melting to your skin. Sometimes government standards mean something. Saved my butt. It happens so fast you don't even realize it. Somehow I managed to get my open shirt (fire-resistant material) around my face as the entire engine compartment went up in flames. I was able to fall back out of the flames but the shirt was so hot it was now burning my skin. I was fine, minus some minor burns and hair loss. Whole front of my truck burned in that incident. Mine was caused by OIL mist. The dipstick tube had come loose during this initial break in. I didn't notice. Hot header pipes the oil mist ignited with great vigor.

How could they not have noticed the puddling of gas on the ground, there’s like a gallon’s worth in the video and that’s after it burned up. And even if it was a fuel leak onto the ground, how would a backfire from the carb set those vapors off and then not notice the copious smell of raw fuel on their feet. Seems to me like they were choosing not to address the smell or sight of the fuel leak. A backfire is a pretty common occurrence when getting an engine going; especially if the timing or A/F might be off

It’s not liquid gasoline that’s so dangerous in a scenario like this it’s gasoline vapors that are explosive and if it had been leaking in a spot that they weren’t aware of and warm enough for the gas to evap quickly that’s how you get a giant explosion and then sustained burning. Also the type of fuel has an effect on how fast it can evaporate as much as warmer air temperatures affect it so higher octane fuels evap quicker
