Bandai Star Wars Battle Droid and STAP

- This Bandai model took a little bit more time than I was expecting, but the same happened with the Biker Scout with Speeder Bike. The Star Wars Battle Droid with STAP kit is a super fun build and the finished product is fantastic, but it's not without it's faults.

Man, going back and watching an old Fwoosh video is definitely an experience.
Right there with ya
that Dory beginning killed me..lol
Heh, couldn't help it. As I was putting it together it looked just like Dory.
The Fwoosh it did look like her lol
Same I'm scared
Robo: “doesn’t like the prequels”
Me: it’s treason then
you got that Real Grade technology carried over from Gunpla bruh. other model kit line from Bandai. Great stuff.
Gunpla is amazing
No, it has the early RG Syndrome
You want to spray a gloss coat before you panel line, to aid the natural flow (capillary action) of the paint along the panel line. It also makes clean-up of excess paint a lot easier. You can then finish with a dull coat, if desired.
I love this kit, but I wish I could buy another one without the STAP
Yeah, they need to do a 2 pack of Battle Droids in a kit.
Or a regular and super battle droid 2-pack
There are no bad ideas here
@@TheFwoosh yea
Every time I see your reviews on one of these kits, there's just some amazing moulding going on in these kits, like 4 colors on a sprue, and now assembled articulating joints on-the-sprue.
These kits are fantastic.
I got this kit for Christmas and boy am I glad for this video to help out with the tricky parts! Thanks Robo!
Glad I could help!
They also use that system of having the limbs pre-assembled in real grade gunpla kits, though usually it's only the inner frame.
Really thought I wouldn't like this model but seeing this kit built I change my mind, keep up the good work.
It's a little bit fiddly but I end up liking it just as much as the Figuarts version.
Fantastic review. Now you have decals mastered, time to paint those kits my friend. Great video. Have fun!
Yup, already started researching different weathering techniques and such. Next step, go!
I just received mine yesterday, at the beginning I was like "Oh crap this feels so fragile"...
But at the end it turned out that I liked even more by comparing it with the SH Battle droid, It is stiffer, not wobbly and its articulations are tighter.
Once again Robo, I have to thank you, a lot of us got into this world of model kits, and couldn't agree more with you, they are the best offer right now. Keep it up with the channel, you are doing and amazing job, and we do appreciate it.
I really appreciate that! I just like to share when I get good toys. Well, every now and then a bad toy, like the Geonosis Battle Droid later tonight, but I'm glad more people have gotten into the model kits. They are awesome and deserve to continue. Now if December doesn't break my wallet.
The Fwoosh OMG, that's true the geonosian battle droid, I'm not gonna miss that review.
And yeah I understand you haha, and by the way, my wallet is gonna break since November with the deathtrooper, scarif stormtrooper MK; SH figuarts episode II obi wab, mafex phasma and boba... geesh this has been a quite expensive year. Although I kinda think we are living in some kind of gold era for Star Wars collectors... so, I'm thankful for having so many options out there hehe... greetings from Mexico buddy take care!
***** It really is a golden age, so many years of wanting six inch Star Wars and now it's coming out left and right! It's awesome.
hello iam korean i wathing your video every days I can not speak English but your videos i like it thank you
subscribe!!!
Wow, thank you, I appreciate that!
For sure! I was thinking same thing that I’d have to bite the bullet on at least 2 figuarts for dynamic poses with the Bandai as background.
i tried pledge surface waxe for the loose ankle joint on my ml wasp and it worked. man I'm getting this stop dried he looks so kool with the binoculars. great video
Thanks! I may try that on the ankles, they definitely need something.
I enjoyed the video and I know you must have enjoyed more in building it. Super.
Man, I want 5 of these! But instead of them being episode 1 STAPs they would be painted to look like the blue and gray ones from The Clone Wars. But I'd have 4 regular battle droids and then one painted up as my mascot for the channel I'm wanting to start up.
Awesome model kit, I need one too...Thanks for the review.
No problem, glad to help.
Yooo i was avoiding this because I thought the droid was a static statue!!!! Rad, totally going to hunt one down
I'm excited af for the Death Trooper kit in Novermber! :D
Same here, that design is growing on me more and more.
Handy trick with clear coating, base clear coat with a gloss then in mat. Clear gloss is more durable than the mat so it will be another level or protection, plus gloss takes washes much better. Makes it so you also can tell when the mat is wearing off and you need to do a touch up if ever. I need to pick up some of the model kits soon. Still want a Black Series Battle Droid. We need Droidekas, Super Battle Droids, maybe even those Assassin Droids from the Clone Wars series.
Good tip, that makes sense. And yes, more droids.
happy to see droid model kit turned out so great, for how tiny and thin this plastic is, i'm glad it all fit's together, of course it can be fragile, but looks great.. thanks for vid..m8 ^_~
No problem! Yeah, it makes me a little nervous every now and then, but I haven't had a model break yet. Knock on wood.
it's like a RG gunpla model. Some parts for the inner frame are already together in the runner.
i don't know what to say, I keep on thinking 'I don't need one' but then I watch the videos and I just need to fet one
Just one. It won't hurt anything. One will do ya.
Thanks for showing the neck part. I was like wtf am I supposed to do here xD
I have to admit, THAT'S. SICK!Comparing the Model Kit to the SHF one, which one do you think is better overall?
If you want one ot mess around with and play with constantly, I'd go SHF. I just like how personal the model kits are, the work needed and the level of customization it allows. Both are good though.
made this a couple of days ago, I used a different stand and not the one that came with the model kit, I think it was the tamashii act 4 or 5 one since I didn't like how tight it held the stap and how lose it was.I had to add panel lining and weathering to the figure and stap plus paint metal parts but it looks amazing once you are done and I actually like the extra work it takes for the model kits, it makes them feel more personal. word of warning, be careful if you top coat the droid since he is so thin he is easy to brake and brittle if you apply too much.
Ah, good to know, I'll keep that in mind. It already feels slightly fragile, don't want to push that to the limit.
Thank you very much for this review ! I will buy this news model Kit for my black series. The Sh Figuarts Battle droid is too expensive for a droid figures.
I can agree with that. Sure, the SHF is ready to go right out of the box but the model is cheaper and comes with way more extras. Yeah, a little work, but that's most of the fun with these.
so beautiful
Great review... Like the pose at 16:36 :-))
The hand thinggy that it's ready made/build is a usual stuff bandai made. Kinda a new system they made for RG - Real Grade kits, ready made inner frame for smaller scales. It is scary to do but yeah it looks good on RG kits for the Droid is meh for me.
So that's why it's a bit expensive, Bandai used "System Injection" which was initially used for molding different colored plastic in one tree (1970-80s). It's a bit sturdy but I wouldn't use enamel based panel lining on the Battle Droid.
I'm torn about this kit because it's a bit expensive, although that poseability and STAP makes up for everything.
It still works out cheaper than the S.H. Figuarts Battle droid, which is nice, but the addition of a vehicle here just pushes me over to preferring the model kit if I were to get more. Just a better bang for your buck.
Yah S.H. Figuarts are a lot more expensive specially in my country. I'll probably grab one when it comes, but I'm not modeling it based on the movies...
looks cool, i'd prefer for them to release this in a 2 pack of droids, instead of getting a stap and a droid. Bandai typically does that with smaller robots that are army builders.
Yeah, I'd love to see a repackage of this to make it a 2 pack, we always need more battle droids.
it'd be a smarter decision, since not everyone wants a stap. but oh well.
Fwoosh! Love your channel. I'm a star wars bandai model kit junky (ships and figures). Love all of your model kit reviews (including non star wars kits). I've also done a few Master Grade Gundam. Dude! pick a MG that speaks to you and do a video! MG gundam is such a fun build experience even if you aren't a Gundam fan! Come on man!
Haha, I already spend way too much time and money on the Star Wars kits, and DBZ, and Figuarts, and Black Series, and other toy lines. And you want me to go out and start a new one? ......Maybe. I appreciate the kind words!
Well, less a suggestion that you start collecting Gundam and more a recommendation that at least once you experience the engineering masterpiece that is a MG gundam, it will blow your mind. If you are impressed with what Bandai does with their Star Wars figures you'll be blown away when you build a Gundam. I myself am not a Gundam guy, don't watch the movies and shows, but after building a bunch of Star Wars I just had to try a Gundam and really enjoyed it.
Charles Boyd Hmm, I may do that, but if I like something I have the tendency to jump all in. I've looked through Gundam before and it's so hard to pick one. I'm a fan of the bulkier, less humanoid robots so surely there is something out there.
I feel like there is very little overall variation in the various Gundam so it isn't enough to suck me in (and i couldn't get into the shows). I found myself drawn to the mass produced grunt mobile suits and did a MG Jesta and MG Geara Doga. The only other gundam that appeals to me enough to buy right now is an older one called the Deathscythe Hell.
Charles Boyd Heh, even I recognize Deathscythe Hell, at least the name. Yup, you may have me convinced. After this next onslaught of imports and models.
I will never be able to get the fish face out of my mind now when seeing those speeders, lol thanks for that.......
Haha, it's Dory!
Indeed. Oh boy, what have you done to my brain.....xD
the opening reminded me of my time back in nam
Great review of what I hoped would be an awesome kit. Am assuming they 3D print the parts these days in order to build the joints in situ/on sprue? I'll still end up getting one, but it's good to know of some of the potential flaws first :)
I really have no clue how they produce the joints already together on the sprue, it's kind of crazy to think about. But I would really call that a flaw, more of a cheat, haha. The only big flaw is the loose ankles but I think that can be fixed.
Honestly Droids don’t Really need a lot of paint. At its current form in the video its very accurate. Yeah it could use some damage or dirt, but they weren’t very textured in the film.
I was going to pass on this kit, but after your review and when the price goes down . I'll get a couple, also after seeing how the arms and legs come assumed it gives me hope that maybe Bandai is planning down the road for maybe some Super Battle Droids, IG-88 and K2-SO and maybe even a Driodekas. And if the translate App I have is correct there is a HUGH model show this weekend in Japan and it said Bandai should be reveling more model kits from all their lines... Let's hope Star Wars is one of them!!!
Yeah, with only the Death Trooper announced I want to see more. Troopers and droids, any and all.
just finished painting mine, wish I could show it somehow
take the parts that are loose off and put some glue on let dry and then put it back together it will thicken it a little making it tighter.
So simple that I never thought of that. Thanks!
I'd love to army build these droids, but I'm not so interested in buying half a dozen STAPs. I wish they would do a droid 2-pack in addition to the STAP kit.
I think they did that in Geonosis colors but it was exclusive and hard to get.
You mentioned having trouble storing the blaster on the backpack. Have you tried turning the gun around so the grip is facing away from the droid?
It's the same. It looks like the slot is supposed to be tight on the trigger and that holds it on but it's just not tight on mine.
Is it compatible with the sh figuarts battle droid
Now they have done the Battle Droid, I wonder if they will make the Super Battle Droid and Droideka, I would buy that in a heartbeat if they did.
Oh man, perfect world those would be next. Especially the Droideka, a model kit would knock it out of the park.
Can I put HG gunpla(Gundam model)on STAP?
Where did you manage to get this set from?
I have an overseas contact who gets them for me from Amazon.jp.
Good to know cuz I do plan on buying a few. I just wish they were the same price as the geonosis color droids. That’s ridiculous, you’d think they’d be more cuz of 3po’s head and that. Heck I’d like to have multiples of both types if I was loaded. Have you ever found a way to buy directly from Bandai?
Are you finding the Geonosis 2 pack for a good price somewhere? I want to say it was an exclusive. And the figures are still on lockdown from being sold direct. They can sell the ships everywhere now, but not the figures. I was told it's a Disney thing when I asked them at Celebration.
Are the Bandai droids the same size as the sh figuarts droids?
Pretty close. Admittedly I never take it off the STAP but it's so close you can't tell any difference.
If you have an iPhone, google has a translation app that lets you take pictures and gets translated
I have an Android that has that app but I've never felt froggy enough to pull it out and use it on any of these, haha.
Dory was brilliant LOL
How durable is this figure? How rough can you be with it before it will break or fall apart? Talking durability, is the SH figuarts one or this one more durable
They are both slightly fragile because of the Battle Droid design itself. Thin limbs and small joints. I haven't had a problem with either but if you're planning on getting crazy I'd go for the Figuarts.
thank you!
What's the panel lining you mentioned? Is it something you buy or just customize yourself?
16:37: lol!
Tamiya makes a liquid with a brush in the cap, you just tap it on a panel and it runs down the trenches to fill in the lines. I haven't actually tried it yet but it looks amazing. It's called Panel Liner.
Bandai also has Gundam panel lining markers that use a fine tip and come in a variation of colors. If you accidently mess up on a panel line you can use a cotton swab to clean it up or give it a more faded effect. Was thinking about getting into the star wars kits since I've been building Gunpla for a couple of years now, also have a couple of the new black series figures :)
Your issue with the ankles being loose on the battle droid is a common issue with Bandai when they make prebuilt frames on the runners. The early Real Grade line (at least the early ones from RX-78-2 Gundam to Destiny Gundam) suffered horrendously from this issue because the inner frame for Real Grades were all prebuilt on the runner with ball joints and articulation, but overtime as you keep moving the arms and legs, those prebuilt joints eventually wear overtime and get loose. We in the Gunpla community tend to call this the "early Real Grade syndrome" to differentiate between the older and newer Real Grades. Newer Real Grade now have you build the inner frame like the 1/100 Master Grades, but that means in return the articulation of the inner frame is sturdy and durable.
this figure seems more accurate of my 1/6 scale Battle Droid sideshow
You should build Gunpla (also Bandai). I think you'd enjoy the Real and Master Gradea
Can he hold a black series storm trooper blaster
Yeah, the hand can open and close to hold it. It's a little tough, but doable.
send link pls
No they’re insanely prices on the Bandai. I have found the geonosis droid figuarts are decently priced though, at least less then they counterparts
which brand paint has worked best so far?
I use mostly acrylics like Testors Model Master and Vallejo Model Color.
ok because I was wondering about the Tamiya stuff, I always have used Vallejo meh on the model masters but I need a few bottles of Tamiya to see..
leigh husker I have used Tamiya in the past and I still do when it comes to metallics and clears. The standard paint drys a little rubbery and I've had it actually peel off in flakes before. That was a long time ago, before I used sealers and such.
Oh, they're using 'Real Grade' style pre-assembled joints..
Not sure I like that - might cause issues when trying to paint it.
dude you live in vb? I live in fort smith! I'm deciding on getting this guy. I've never gotten any of these models so this would be my first.
Yeah, I'm kind of out in the sticks, but I have to head your way to find anything worthwhile, haha. The models are worth it, love them, but they do need some extra work to fit in with the rest of the collection.
The Fwoosh agreed with the paint and weathering. Hey BTW you look familiar do you know Nathan Baxter? I remember meeting him and a guy that looks like you at toys r us on rogue Friday.
Another fun model to assemble. This one however is nowhere near as sturdy as grevious, no wonder why you leave them poses on the stap. The thumbs suck for holding things. One kept popping out so I just glued the darn thing. They look good though. Thanks for another great review and talking me into purchasing ( really twisting my arm😜).
Yeah, for my ground troops I use the SHF Battle Droids, they are still fiddly but less so than the STAP driver. And haha, you know you love them, no matter how much I talk them up.
Hey robo you played Fallen Order yet? It’s a great game
what is panel lining?
It's a solution that can be dabbed on a sculpted line and it fills it with whatever color you want. It just seeps and fills.
oh cool, thanks for replying
fudoushin.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/img_2522.jpg
Not the best model kit but still very impressive
Yeah, I don't see myself army building this but it fills that need.
I know you don't use glue but what kinda glue could you use for this
Should I use glue
You don't really have to use glue, but either super glue or model glue would work fine here. I've used gel superglue on bits like C-3PO's bolts and a couple of other tiny things.
So, it has pre-built inner frame like the inner frame from RG Gundam from Bandai. Maybe I'll skip this kit. Thanks for the review. :)
Is this 6" scale?
Yes it is.
6 inch scale right?
Yup, fits right alongside Black Series and Figuarts.
Ooo, have you tried the Figuarts battle droid on the STAP?
The feet don't have the rectangle peg holes like the model droid so the only way it holds on is by the hands and those aren't very strong. You can get it on there but it's very unstable.
Good to know. Have you tried Anakin or Obi Wan (BS) on there, am thinking of potential photography opportunities recreating some of the scenes from Clone Wars, may need a little blu-tack on the feet :)
G Money That's where your big problem will be, keeping the feet on the pegs. The Black Series figures aren't quite as limber as the Figuarts so it's a little more struggle but it can be done.
Cool, I'll probably go for it then. Was in two minds after the review as has got two figuarts battle droids already (Geonosis on the way too), but after watching a few episodes of clone wars, the idea of getting Obi or Anakin on one is too good to pass up :) Thanks!
Where do you order your model kits from? I'm just tired of eBay raise up the price on everything Japan.
It's happening everywhere, not just eBay. The yen is rising and there was recently a jump in shipping overseas. I get my kits from a contact in Hong Kong which is slightly better but it's still gotten more expensive.
Should I buy this?
I like it. You may not want to have the Battle Droid separate much, but I like having the STAP back-up my couple of SHF Droids.
Thanks
This thing is kind of a bummer for me. I don't really want the STAP. I just need one battle droid for my display but I have to shell out the extra dough for the STAP.
get the figuarts. it's around 34 bucks or so on Mandarake
Like dodgeball said, you can get the Figuarts Battle Droid. But really, the prices are nearly the same, and even if you don't want the STAP it feels like you're getting more bang for your buck.
more proof that Bandai rules!!
8:07 - plz elaborate on the “creative cutting”! Ha!
I just chopped off the parts I didn't want, haha.
I meant assembled
If only it came with two droids.
Sup Fwoosh
Nothin. Chillin.
The Fwoosh :3
Which it was a clone wars stap
You could paint it if you really wanted it to be one.
This guys voice has changed so much imo
Hello I am Jurassic Man 1993s friend and it told me about you so hallo!!!!!
Hello!
Hallo
The prebuilt joints is a carryover from the Bandai Real Grade Gundam line. Highly recommended if you like robotic designs, even if you’re not a Gundam fan. Might get you into Gundam if you’re not. I’d recommend the Wing Zero Custom Real Grade. Really nice kit, and the design is gorgeous.
STAP sounds like a disease. "Damn I had a really bad STAP infection last week".
Heh, the wife is a nurse so I knew where you were going with that before reading the whole thing.
god dayum, I havent even build my clone trooper.
Heh, I try to get these as early as possible, I hate waiting.
these are basically like Lego but much complicated
Basically.
that's how Bandai markets their model kits.
This is more like a RG Gundam kit level instead of HG level.
I wonder why these kits cost so much. Maybe Disney is making Bandai sell these Star Wars kits for a lot more than they should cost. Bandai real grade kits for gundam are extremely articulated and have many more parts than these Star Wars kits and these real grade kits only cost $30. These Star Wars kits have about a quarter of the sprus of a gundam and cost more.
Only the ones with vehicles cost more. This cost $32, the standard figure kits usually cost under $20 unless they are shiny like C-3PO and Phasma, who are a little over $20. Well, before overseas shipping, which has gotten insane lately. And yeah, Star Wars licensing is probably a bit expensive, but that's on top of Bandai not being able to legally sell these outside the Asian markets. So many rules...
I wish there weren't so many regulations. The bandai kits are truly great.
"I'm not a big fan of the prequels"
Me: You're starting to sound like a separatist
Why is it 40 dollars, well I guess I will never army build :(
Because it comes with the STAP vehicle. The Biker Scout with Speeder Bike runs the same price. But yeah, tough to army build, but the only other option is the Figuarts, which is about the same price without the vehicle.
focus seems all over the place on this video :(
Yeah, I'm still fighting with my new camera. Robo doesn't like tech changes. The old camera worked with minimal effort, this new one takes a lot of tweaking.
no worries man, still enjoyed the video as ususal
